Sam Carel, 4th Year Head Coach [email protected]

Sam Carel enters his fourth season at the helm of the Jefferson College baseball program. After serving one season as an assistant, Carel began the 2006-2007 campaign as the new head coach of the Vikings. Following in the footsteps of his Hall of Fame predecessor, Dave Oster, Carel is the seventh head coach in the rich 44year history of Jeffco baseball. The 2009 season witnessed Carel earning his 100th career victory en route to the program’s third consecutive regular season conference championship and finishing as the runner-up in the Region XVI postseason tournament. Jeffco completed the year with a record of 34-25, won its thirteenth overall Midwest Community College Athletic Conference championship, and appeared in the Region XVI championship game for the third consecutive year. During his three year tenure, Carel’s teams have won three conference titles, a Regional championship, has amassed 30-plus wins each season, and has recorded a .632 winning percentage in the post-season. Carel’s teams have also produced forty-four players who committed with four year institutions, including twenty-four who signed with NCAA Division-I schools. The 2007 season saw Jefferson enjoy its most successful campaign since the school participated in the 2002 World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado. In Carel’s first year the Vikings finished 37-25, won their eleventh MCCAC regular season championship, and entered the Region XVI tournament as the number one seed. After defeating Meramec and Maple Woods (twice), Jeffco would go on to claim their fourth ever regional championship (’82, ’93, ’02, ’07). Jefferson would then move on to host the South Central District Championship Tournament, with a trip to the World Series on the line. After losing the first game to Delgado College (New Orleans), the Vikings would come all the way back through the loser’s bracket and into the if necessary game before dropping in defeat, 6-5. Throughout his three years, Carel and his staff have been involved with eighteen All-Conference players, including fourteen AllMCCAC first team members, as well as the 2007 (Shaeffer Hall) and 2009 (Luke Schlechte) Conference Players-of-the-Year. In addition, his teams have produced thirteen All-Region players (including nine All-Region XVI first team members), three All-District (including one All-South Central District Gold Glove Team member), one All-American (second team), five Academic All-Americans, and two NJCAA All-Star Team members. Carel was also named the 2007 ABCA Region XVI Coach-of-the-Year as well as the 2008 and 2009 MCCAC Coach-of-the-Year. A native of the East Coast, Carel served as a student assistant and manager from 1997-2000 with the Missouri State University baseball program. After a brief stop in Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, he returned to his alma mater in the fall of 2002 as an assistant coach. Carel remained on the staff until January of 2006 as an infield and hitting instructor. During his two stops at MSU, Carel was a part of a program that saw unprecedented success as the Bears became a fixture on the national

stage in NCAA Division I baseball. In 1999, the Bears finished with a mark of 38-19, good enough for 2nd place in the Missouri Valley Conference and 2nd in the NCAA Fayetteville Regional. During the 1999 season, Missouri State led NCAA Division I baseball in total homeruns (144), homeruns per game (2.53), and slugging percentage (.626). The Bears were second in scoring at 10.65 runs per game and fifth in team batting (.345). In 2003, MSU won their second Missouri Valley Conference regular season title in three years. The Bears made history a few weeks later when they defeated the Big 12 Champions, Nebraska Cornhuskers to claim their first ever NCAA Regional Championship. The following week MSU swept a best 2 out of 3 series against the Ohio State Buckeyes to win a Super Regional Championship. That victory sent the Bears into the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska as one of eight remaining teams competing for a shot at the National title. After losing to the eventual National Champions, Rice Owls, MSU was eliminated by the University of Miami. Missouri State finished the 2003 season ranked as the number eight team in the country. Throughout his time at MSU, Carel was involved with 46 players who were drafted and/or later signed professional contracts, including Brett Sinkbeil, the 16th overall player selected in the 2006 amateur draft, and Ross Detweiler, the sixth overall player selected in the 2007 amateur draft. Carel was also involved with seven All-Americans, 22 All-Conference players (including 10 All-MVC first team), and four USA National Team members. Five of those former Bears are current or former major leaguers, including Ryan Howard the 2005 National League Rookie-ofthe-Year and 2006 National League Most Valuable Player. In 2002, he worked as the head coach of the Arlington Wizards 12 and under team that went 51-28, won the NBC 12 and under Texas state championship and finished seventh at the Super Series Baseball of American National Championship Tournament in Gulfport, Mississippi. He was named head coach of the Super Series All-Tournament team. In 2001, he helped guide the Texas Stars 14 and under team to the bronze medal at the AAU National Tournament. Carel worked as the associate head coach with the Missouri Rebels select baseball organization in 2004. That summer he helped guide the Rebels to the 18 and under NBC World Series National Championship. The Rebels dominated the competition in Wichita, scoring over eight runs per game and recording three shut outs which included a one-hitter and a combined no-hitter. In the summer of 2005, Carel was the head coach of the Highland Park Blue Sox Baseball Organization in the Texas Collegiate League (a summer wood bat league). His Blue Sox team finished the year with the most wins in franchise history. That team produced six players that would later be picked up in the Major League baseball amateur draft. Just recently, Carel began work as an associate scout for the Cleveland Indians. Carel earned his Bachelor’s degree in physical education from Missouri State in 1999 and his Master’s degree from MSU in August of 2005. Carel has two sons, Max, 6 and Charlie, 5.

Pat and his wife, Kasey, reside in St. Peters where she works for the St. Charles City Police Department.

Dave Oster, Assistant Coach – Infield Coach Oster is no stranger to the Jefferson College Baseball program. For 29 years Dave Oster has been a member of the Jefferson College Baseball program. Oster was a middle infielder on the 1968 and 1969 teams. He holds the honor of being the very first scholarship player in Jeffco baseball history. Upon graduating from Jefferson, Oster attended New Mexico Highland University where he was a pre-season All-American his senior year. Oster returned to Jefferson in January of 1980 as the sixth head coach in the program’s history. Shortly thereafter Oster would begin to mold the Vikings into one of the more prominent programs in the nation. During the Oster era, Jeffco celebrated unprecedented success that included 12 conference titles, 3 regional championships, and a birth to the 2002 Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado. Oster had 41 of his players sign professional contracts, including five who made it to the Major Leagues. These included Mike Henneman, who played with the Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros, and Texas Rangers. Other big-leaguers included Donnie Wall with the San Diego Padres, Cliff Politte with the Chicago White Sox, Mark Buehrle with the White Sox, and Steve Bieser with the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals. Also during that time, Oster was inducted into the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame and the National Junior College Hall of Fame. Zac played collegiately at Jefferson College, where he was a two-year starter at catcher and served as the Vikings team captain for the 2006 season. BASEBALL HALL OF FAME It is with great honor that the Jefferson College baseball program welcomes Terry Cochran, Cliff Politte and Kevin Lucas into its 2009 Hall of Fame inductions class. Terry Cochran, a native of St. Louis, graduated from Hancock High School before enrolling at Jefferson College in the fall of 1980. As a teammate of fellow Jeffco Baseball Hall of Fame member, Mike Henneman, Cochran was an integral squad member for two successful seasons under Hall of Fame coach Dave Oster. Cochran started at second base, hit third in the lineup, and had a career batting average of over .330. In 1982, Cochran was named Team Captain and was selected to the MCCAC AllConference team as he lead the Vikings to a 34-17 record and Jefferson’s first ever baseball Regional Championship. Cochran transferred to Southern Illinois UniversityEdwardsville and his success continued there when in 1983, he was an NCAA All-Region selection and led his team to the NCAA Division II College World Series. In recognition of his outstanding play, Cochran was selected to the NCAA World Series AllTournament Team. In 1984, Cochran was chosen as the Scholar-Athlete of SIUE and the Most Valuable Player of the baseball team, and after graduating from SIUE, became a successful fixture as a St. Louis area educator. He has served as the assistant baseball coach at SIUE and Washington University and later served on the baseball and basketball coaching staffs at Mehlville High School, Oakville High School, and Vianney High School. Currently, Cochran is serving as the Director of Admissions at Vianney High School and resides in St. Louis with his wife Janet and five sons Ty, Tommy, Tony, Tanner and TJ. St. Louis native, and Vianney High School graduate, Cliff Politte began his career at Jefferson in the fall of 1994 after spending a year on the Memphis State University baseball team. Politte excelled as both a pitcher and centerfielder for the Vikings and his stellar 1995 season earned him NJCAA First Team All-American honors. The highlight of Politte’s season came in a doubleheader against St. Louis Community College-Meramec. Politte struck out 11 batters en route to pitching his first career no-hitter in the first game of the rivalry. He also went three for three at the plate, with three RBI’s. In the 2nd game Politte again went three for three while driving in three, and also pitched late to pick up the save as the Vikings earned a doubleheader sweep. Following the 1995 Jefferson season, Politte was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Upon posting a record of 15-2 with a 2.50 ERA, with the Cardinals A and AA affiliates, Politte was named the 1997 Cardinals’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year. Politte would later “get the call” and made his debut in the Major Leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1988. Politte would go on to have a successful Major 2006 Dave Oster League pitching career as he also played for the Philadelphia Phillies, Toronto Blue Jays, and Chicago White Sox. While with the White Sox, Politte 2007 Harold Oetting pitched in three games of the 2005 Major League Baseball World Series and 2008 Mike Henneman helped the White Sox win the World Series championship in a four game sweep over the Houston Astros. Politte’s professional baseball career ended 2009 Terry Cochran in 2009, after undergoing total hip replacement surgery. Currently, Politte Cliff Politte owns Politte Lawn Care, LLC, a lawn care business that serves the greater St. Louis area and resides in St. Louis with his wife, Jenni and three sons, Drew, Kevin Lucas Michael and Jack.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

After a dominate career at Festus High School that saw Kevin Lucas earn All-State honors in his junior and senior years, Lucas began his career at Jefferson in the fall of 1995. The former two-time KTJJ Radio High School Player of the Year in 1994 and 1995, immediately became a dominate player at shortstop for the Vikings. In his first year at Jefferson, Lucas hit .360 with six homeruns along with 22 stolen bases. He was named the 1996 Jeffco Baseball Offensive Most Valuable Player and was an All-Region XVI first team selection. Lucas would follow that effort with another successful campaign in his second year. In 1997, he hit .399 with four homeruns and 28 stolen bases en route to being named to the All-Conference, All-Region, and All-American teams. Lucas was also named the 1997 Jeffco Baseball Most Valuable Player. Following his two year stint at Jefferson College, Lucas would go on to attend Oklahoma State University. Success continued at OSU where he was a two-time All Big 12 selection and led his team to the NCAA Division I College World Series in 1999. Following a remarkable career at OSU, that in two years saw Lucas compile 171 hits, 14 homeruns, and 42 stolen bases, Lucas would be granted the opportunity to play Minor League Baseball in the Kansas City Royals organization. Lucas, who has a ten-month old daughter, Claire, is currently a teacher and assistant baseball and softball coach at Hillsboro High School.

2010 TEAM OUTLOOK The 2010 season will look to build upon the success of the 2009 campaign which included a third consecutive conference championship (13th overall), Region XVI runner-up finish, and a 34-25 record. The team will be led by the following returning sophomores: Catchers— Trey Sorrells (32 starts) and Jim Gilkerson (28 starts); Outfielders—Jake Lucé (.359 avg., 14 doubles), Jordan May (.314 avg, 9 doubles), and Preston Aldridge (10 doubles, 4 homeruns); Infielders—Jordan Coons (.349 avg, 14 doubles, 5 homeruns; 2-1 on the mound with 2.16 ERA), and Garrett Yates (5 doubles, 4 homeruns); Pitchers—Matt Stites (7-3, 3.95 ERA, 73 strikeouts), Ryan Wheat (5-2, 4.02 ERA), Cory Kyle (3-2, 4.24 ERA), Kyle Marler (2-2, 3.21 ERA), and James Hudelson (16 appearances, 3.22 ERA). Stites, Sorrells, and red-shirt sophomore, Seth Swafford, were named captains for the 2010 season as voted on by the team. With a squad that has 12 new faces, there are many question marks entering the season. After splitting the 2009 catching duties last season, Sorrells (McKinney North, TX) and Gilkerson (Rogersville) will return to captain the infield. Freshmen Craig Jones (Malden) and Chad Boyher (Mehlville) will also look to assist with the catching duties. Coons (Jefferson City) and freshman transfer CJ Rose (Ft. Zumwalt South) will split time at third base and on the pitching mound. Colton Davis (Weatherford, TX), JT Lovelace (Festus), Yates (McKinney North, TX), as well as freshmen Drew Stanton (Oakville) and Casey Goss (SpringfieldGlendale) will all look to see time up the middle. At first base, the infield will be rounded out by Yates, Rose, and freshman Dalton Friend (Rolla). The 2010 Vikings’ outfield will be anchored by three returning sophomores. Lucé (Allen, TX), Aldridge (Francis Howell), and May (Vianney) all played significant roles in last year’s postseason tournament. Left-handed hitting freshman Drew Levi (Oakville) will see significant time between the outfield and time as the designated hitter. The outfield will be rounded out by Jones and freshman Jake Bax (Fatima). By far the most experienced group returning to the fold is the 2010 Vikings’ pitching staff. Sophomores Stites (Festus), Kyle (Stoutland), Wheat (Springfield-Glendale), Coons (Jefferson City), Marler (Potosi), Ethan Jaeger (Eureka), and Hudelson (Columbia-Hickman), along with red-shirt sophomores Swafford (Hillsboro) and Aaron Kleekamp (Francis Borgia), look to anchor and lead a veteran pitching staff. The pitching corp will be rounded out by redshirt freshman Rose (Creighton University transfer), along with freshmen Bax, Friend, Logan Holthaus (Winona), Landon Jarrett (Mansfield), Chris Lenhoff (Hillsboro), and Justin Sprenger (Washington). The 2010 season will include trips to Texas, Oklahoma, and Illinois. The Vikings, who were preseason ranked 17, will open the 2010 season on the road for their first eight games which include top ranked Howard College (4 games) and 12th ranked Seminole State (3 games).

Viking Alum Mark Buehrle Pitches Perfect Game

F

ollowing his noteworthy appearance in the recent MLB All-Star Game in St. Louis, Mark Buehrle, a pitcher for the Jefferson College Vikings in 1998-1999, pitched the 18th perfect game in major league history on July 23 for the Chicago White Sox. Buehrle needed only 116 pitches to dispatch of 27 straight Tampa Bay Rays batters en route to his gem, defeating the Rays 5-0. After the game, Buehrle received a phone call from President Barack Obama. This was the first perfect game for Buehrle, but not his first no-hitter in the majors. He no-hit the Texas Rangers on April 18, 2007. Buehrle went 8-0 for the Vikings in 1998. He returned in 1999 and was named a third-team All-American after going 8-4 for Dave Oster's Jeffco squad. He was a 38th round pick by the White Sox in 1998. Prior to that he pitched for another Vikings baseball team, the Francis Howell North Vikings.
