President’s Report Hello, so many things happening at APS and have been happening all year. The dogs and cats are doing fine though we have lost a few kittens during the kitten season which was most sad and a couple of our dear dogs have passed away also through sickness but all in all our furry babies are doing just fine. Our vets Adele and Jill and vet nurses Denise, Lynn and Stef have done an excellent job of looking after their furry patients. Stef has left APS and I would like us all to wish Stef and her husband Tim all the very best as they wait for the arrival of their baby, best wishes to you all.

Our new vet nurse is Kelly Miller and we welcome her to the APS “family”. The Open Day was a good day, the rain held off. APS member attendance was a little down compared to previous years, we missed you! To those kind people who attended and donated their day to APS by having a stall thank you. These included Caroline Pittard who once again spent hours beautifying adorable woofers. Plus sincere thanks to Woof Works (Allergy Free Healthy Pet Treats), and the Coffee Van was in attendance and donated a percentage of his takings. John Cassell did fascinating animal shapes with his balloons and several other people had stalls and donated to APS – THANK YOU. Our Vet was in attendance to answer a few queries and our Animal Behavourist Eric Crozier was also kept very busy answering questions from concerned pawrents. All in all a good day but we could not have managed it without the effort of our marvellous volunteers at APS – so huge thanks to everyone who was able to help in so many ways.

Christmas for the furries……AND a Craft day/garage sale. APS is holding a craft day on Sunday 7th December 2014, and a mini garage sale, as we thought we would try and do something a little different!

If anyone has some craft

items that you are no longer using perhaps you would consider donating them to APS so a volunteer can make some items for our craft stall? Or perhaps you have some time to make craft items yourself and donate them for us to sell? Another way you can help is to put this date in your diary and come along on the day to give your support and perhaps bring a little Christmas gift for the dogs or cats. Or perhaps you would like to have a craft stall yourself on the day in which case give me a call. More information about this day will be in the next newsletter. We have the Street Appeal on 26th September to look forward to, as well as the APS Dog Walk on the 12th October, the City of Armadale Dogs Day Out at Rushton Park and the APS AGM on October 26th, plus we are attending the Perth Royal Show on 30th September and 1st October and the Pet Expo at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre on 6th/ 7th December, just to name a few. If you can help with the Street Appeal then please register your interest as soon as possible, thank you. We will need as many people as possible out and about with a can raising donations for the furries at APS. Take care dear Members,

Clare 2

The Importance of VACCINATING YOUR PET Vaccinations reduce the risk of diseases, viruses and other illnesses that can be extremely harmful to your pet. They rarely have side effects and are a very simple way to protect your furry friend. Puppies and kittens require their initial vaccinations and then an ongoing vaccination is required once a year to ensure protection. These yearly vaccinations could save your pets life. We often see many cases of severe illness in animals that could have been prevented by a simple vaccination. Don’t wait until it’s too late, book your dog or cat in to your local vet today!

Become a Foster

Carer

Foster carers play such an important role in helping us rescue more animals. Fostering involves caring for a dog/puppy or cat/kitten in your home until they find a forever home. Foster carers are required to bring the animal to the shelter for any vet appointments and to meet potential new owners at a suitable time. Fostering is a very rewarding experience and allows us to rescue more animals. If you would like to become a foster carer, please contact the shelter on 93986616 to enquire or come and visit us at 27 Talbot Road Southern River between 10am and 3pm.

“I have been volunteering with the APS for about a year now. It keeps me motivated to stay because of all the successful stories with all the animals and all the new and exciting experiences. My favourite experience so far at APS would have to be watching the animals get a fresh start at life and becoming healthier. What motivated me to become a volunteer at The Animal Protection Society was that it was a no kill shelter and the friendly people who work and support the animals. I have 2 dogs at home one a Lab x Kelpie (Ebony) and a Purebreed Golden Retriever (Stella). Animal protection Society is a not for profit animal shelter and has a no kill policy. So if you want to have a fun experience and learn new things come and volunteer with APS, you won’t regret it”.

“Fostering one animal might not change the world but it will change the world for that animal”

Sponsor a page in our 2015 calendar We are producing the APS 2015 calendar in the hope it will be available for end of September 2014. What we wish to do is ask for businesses/families to purchase a blank square in the calendar for $50.00 per square. We can put the business/family name and a few other words the business/family wish placed on the square. It is a form of fundraising plus allowing businesses/families to advertise their business or perhaps a family birthday/wedding/anniversary or best wishes for the year or a special occasion…..anything someone wishes to put in a blank square…month choice is the decision of the business/family.

Happy Home Tails… Kit was brought into APS a couple of months ago. His owner had gone into a nursing home and the neighbours did not want to look after him anymore. He is an older boy, about 14. One of our kind carers took pity on him and took him home. You can see he has settled in really well and has made friends with the duckling. We are told they are never left unsupervised but that Kit doesn't even mind when the duckling nibbles his tail, paws and ears.

One year old today! My goodness, how far she has come, in only 10 short months! So thankful to everyone at APS, without you, wouldn't have this happy face to brighten my life every day. Gorgeous Ivy came to APS in a terrible state after being left unwanted in the pound at only 8 weeks of age. Isabel became her foster carer and nursed her back to health and decided to adopt her! What a happy ending!

This is Chester (formerly Evan), adopted from APS nearly two years ago. He is my special boy, very timid around strangers (his default setting is "run and hide"), but he loves his mama! He is so sweet and cuddly, and absolutely loves tummy pats. He has a very special place in my heart. He's also a doting big brother to my two other boys (both rescues also). I'm forever grateful to APS for bringing us together

Bella was left tied up out the front of the shelter. Jodie adopted Bella and has done a magnificent job in rebuilding her confidence. I adopted Bella about two years ago thanks to everyone at APS for giving her a second chance. Bella now thinks the meaning of animal cruelty is being made to stay home and not come in the car with me. She looks very happy now!

Hi APS, just over 1 year ago we adopted Gary (he was originally called Baloo) from APS. He is doing so well. He is loved so much in our household, lives with 2 other kitties, enjoys rolling in the dirt and laying in the sun. He stays on our bed every night cuddled up. He is the sweetest thing. Thank you!

NEW VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED If you have ever thought about volunteering, now is the time! If you have some spare time, any day of the week we welcome you with open arms. Please note that volunteers must be over 16 years of age. No amount of time is too big or too small, so if you'd like to come along to lend a hand, either casually or on a regular basis, we'd really appreciate your assistance in a range of tasks. These may include, cleaning the catteries or kennels, walking the dogs, gardening, washing, playing with the dogs or cats and feeding the animals. If you would like to become a volunteer please email [email protected] and book in for an induction. The Animal Protection Society of WA Inc. relies on our hardworking volunteers to continue rescuing and rehoming dogs and cats. We can assure that you will be rewarded with endless hugs, licks, sniffs, purrs, meows and slobbery kisses.

Upcoming Events Garage Sale – Sunday 31st August Another one of our wonderful garage sales will be held from 9am-1pm. Come down to the shelter to grab a bargain on many different items. Busy Bee – Sunday 14th September We are having a busy bee from 9am-12pm if anyone is available to come and help. This is a time for volunteers to sort, clean and tidy up around the shelter. Hope to see you there! Street Appeal – Friday 26th September We are looking for interested volunteers who want to spend some time on Friday collecting money from various locations, usually in the Perth CBD. If you are interested please email info@ animalprotectionsociety.westnet.com.au or ring the shelter on 93986616 to register or find out more information. Dog Walk – Sunday 12th October A great day was had by all who attended last year. Get your walking shoes ready and bring your dogs along to Piney Lakes Reserve in Winthrop for an enjoyable morning. AGM – Sunday 26th October Save the date for our 2014 AGM. Stay tuned for more information in the next newsletter. Craft/Garage Sale – Sunday 7th December Several of The Animal Protection Society volunteers will be making art and craft items and selling them at this event. There will also be people demonstrating how to do various types of craft. If anyone has any craft items they would like to donate for us to sell on this day we would appreciate it very much. It will also be Christmas for the dogs and cats if anyone would like to bring Christmas presents in for the furries? Stay tuned for more information in the next newsletter. 7

What a success! 2014 Open Day Our most recent Open Day once again brought many successful adoptions and much needed funds. There were cupcakes, coffees, pet supplies, plants, dog treats, toys, also a dog wash, free veterinarian advice and dog behaviourist tips a garage sale and many more great stalls. These Open Day’s give The Animal Protection Society of WA an opportunity to open our doors to the public to fundraise and allow people to see and understand what we do. Each and every year we are delighted with the diversity of the people that come in to make a donation, browse the stalls, visit the animals, hold a stall, volunteer or just have a chat. A sincere thank you to all of the stallholders and volunteers who contributed to the success of the day. Thank you to all that attended and to those who gave generously to assist with the care of our animals.

Available for adoption… ADOPT ME

Tammy Female Staffy Mix D.O.B: 18/07/2012 When Tammy first arrived at APS she was exceedingly timid and wary. It took a while for her to come around and realise that life can be enjoyable, she soon gained confidence with the volunteers and soon became a favourite girl. She is very adept at jumping high within her kennel so she would need secure fencing to keep her safe. She should not be homed where there are very young children or, if they visit, she would need to be supervised.

A thank you and huge appreciation for his most generous and kind donation to John Deykin. This fantastic donation will help enormously, enabling The Animal Protection Society of WA to go on caring for the dogs and cats. Thank you John for your support of APS over the years and may you enjoy your retirement. A huge thank you to the Quality of Life Foundation for their most generous donation of $5,000.00 greatly appreciated. And thank you to Bechtel of Western Australia for their generous donation of $2,500. Brilliant. Thank you to the students, parents and staff of Wesley College who organised a blessing of the animals ceremony and sausage sizzle fundraiser for APS, in addition to holding a curry night and pizza night for a gold coin donation. An extraordinary effort raising $2,298.69. Thank you also to Murdoch University College of Veterinary Medicine Class of 2004 reunion for their donation of $387.50. And to P & N Bank for $224.05 raised from a morning tea. Thank you to Downer EDI as they raised $142.00 from the sale of hot cross buns. Thank you also to Jan Cicerello, Joe Raccuia, Dr. Nick Smith, Arthur Finley, Vicky Fregon, Valerie Avent and so many other members and friends of APS for their wonderful donations and continued support. Grill’d Carousel for their $300.00 donation David Russell of Kelmscott Canvas, Blinds and Sails for his donation of two sails for our outside dog runs. So many different ways of raising funds for APS but they all have one goal.....to make life easier for the abandoned cats and dogs at APS - and it certainly helps. We have had children come in to the shelter to generously donate their pocket money, aged pensioners have donated, and people with families....we are grateful to all of you who have donated and on behalf of the dogs and cats and volunteers at The Animal Protection Society of WA, we THANK YOU ONE AND ALL. We are filled with amazement at your kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity.

Farewell Mister and Matilda It is with much sadness that we had to say goodbye to our oldest feline resident in late June. Mister had lived at APS for many years. He was well known and well loved by all the carers, volunteers and visitors to APS. Mister was also well loved by the other cats. There always seemed to be a cat cuddled up with him. He will be missed and will take his place in our Feline Memorial Garden. Rest in Peace Mister. On a much happier note another of our feline icons, Matilda, finally found her forever home. From all accounts she has settled in really well and gets on well with the other cats and dogs in the home. June certainly was a big month for our long termers.

Mister If you would like to assist The Animal Protection Society of WA in raising funds, come and grab a box of fundraising chocolates. This is a simple way to raise money, especially if your colleagues like chocolate! 9

PETstock Dog Adoption Day What a fabulous time we had at the April PETstock Adoption Day. We are fortunate enough to have these adoption days regularly at PETstock Cannington. The team there support both the dogs and cats in our care and are continually donating much needed goods. These adoption days give volunteers the opportunity to spread the word about rescue and The Animal Protection Society of WA Inc. PETstock do not sell dogs or cats and are valued advocators of adoption. We also have the opportunity to raise much needed funds by holding a sausage sizzle, selling merchandise and selling delicious cupcakes. Teresa at Teresa’s Delightful Cupcakes continues to donate an amazing range of cupcakes each adoption day. The dogs also get a day out which is always enjoyed as they are spoilt with new collars, leads, toys, treats and cuddles. Butch, Freda, Ralph, Smudge, Leon and Jenkins were the lucky ones this time and spent the day at PETstock. Since this adoption day all of these beautiful dogs have been adopted except for one gorgeous boy, Butch. He is still waiting patiently for his forever home.

Ralph waiting for his sausage sizzle

Thank you once again to our group of dedicated volunteers who without hesitation give up their weekend to spoil these dogs and help find them forever homes.
