WHAT IS SMALL BUSINESS SUNDAY? - - - - X
The foundation of our business model is the desire to help small businesses grow through various awareness channels and inbound marketing strategies.
To that end, our Small Business Sunday campaign gives us the
opportunity to show love to amazing local businesses. Every Sunday we
post articles about small businesses and their owners on our SBS blog, social media channels and in our monthly newsletters.
HOW CAN BRANCHES BENEFIT FROM IMPLEMENTING IT? - - - - X
The process we’ve created can be replicated successfully at branch locations nationwide. Branches will be able to connect and build thriving relationships with small businesses in their respective
areas. Additionally, they will have a new source of quality content, along with all of the benefits that such content brings.
“
Small Business Sunday is an absolute game changer! -Ryan Turner
HOW DID SMALL BUSINESS SUNDAY GET ITS START? - - - - X
”
At first, we were no different than your typical salesmen.
“Hi, my name is Mike. I’m with
Social Paragon and would like to talk to you about digital marketing services and what
you’re doing to improve your overall online image. Do you have a sec…” *Click!
It quickly became clear why this was not an effective
approach. Business owners are constantly on the receiving end of
pitches from marketing agencies offering the same services. If we
wanted to get through to them, we needed to do something different. But what?
CHANGING THE PURPOSE OF OUTREACH - - - - X
Instead of contacting them to talk about how great WE are, what if we did the opposite? What if we focused on why THEY’RE great and
explained how excited we are about THEIR business? What’s more,
instead of just hearing their story for ourselves, why not share it with our audience and other small business enthusiasts?
What if our outreach attempts went from typical sales pitches to something more like what you see below?
“Hi [business owner first name], We’re kicking off our Small Business Sunday campaign where we feature local Utah businesses and write up a nice article and give them a shoutout.
I noticed that you guys have been in business for over 50 years and I think that in itself warrants you and your business being one of our features. It’s obvious that you guys are doing something special! Here’s an example of what I’m talking about: Soaplicity | Utah's Small Business Sunday Please let me know if this is something you’d be interested in as it’s on our own dime and costs you nothing but your time. Thanks!” Reaching out in this way would “kill two birds with one stone.” We
would be able to connect and build lasting relationships with small businesses and, at the same time, get more high-quality content for our blog.
WE GAVE IT A TRY! - - - - X
We began researching
businesses that would fit our model and provide us with
interesting, quality content.
The small businesses we chose: -
Operated from an actual storefront location Had at least a few employees in-house
Were not franchises
Had the potential to
become clients in the future
We then reached out to the owners to let them know what we thought made their businesses so special. The response was amazing!
Counting the results from emails, phone calls and walk-ins, we
received an 89% response rate, not just from staff, but from the owners themselves.

I received an 89% response rate from small business owners themselves when pitching our Small Business Sunday campaign. -Mike Ropelato
”
Find and leverage the “purple cow” of each business
HERE’S HOW WE DID IT: - - - - X
Researching small businesses at the start armed us with “icebreakers” that would get us a response. What we found opened the door for us to schedule appointments to meet the business owners.
Sometimes the “icebreaker” was a treasure trove of excellent reviews from satisfied customers. Other times, it was the longevity of the
businesses, many of which had been around for over 50 years! In many more cases, there was an interesting physical aesthetic or a unique product or service that deserved attention.
FINDING THE BUSINESS OWNER’S CONTACT INFO - - - - X After we decided what made a
particular business noteworthy, it
was time to find the owner’s contact information. It was usually located in one of the following places: -
About page of their website
Contact page of their website Footer at the bottom of their website
-
Facebook About section
LinkedIn account of business owner
If not available there, we would fill out the contact form on the
website, explaining that we wanted to feature their business in our
campaign, create a company video and write an article about the owner.
“
Small Business Sunday paired with company video productions is how we will build strong relationships with business owners! -Steven Henderson
”
POWER OF WALK-INS! - - - - X
Sometimes, in lieu of an email, we simply walked into the businesses we were interested in. (This is a good way to create opportunity if written communication isn’t your preference.)
Often times, after explaining the reason for our visit, we were
quickly put in contact with the owner. From there, we talked more about: ● ● ● ●
The showcase video that they get to keep
How and where they can use the video (e.g. on their website, in directories, on social media and so on)
How we use that video to build up our samples
And their very own feature article for Small Business Sunday
SCHEDULING APPOINTMENTS - - - - X
After an owner confirmed interest in being featured, we would decide
on a convenient time to meet (or meet again) to learn more about their business. Afterward, the owner would be sent a link to our
questionnaire so that their responses could be compiled and sent to our writers.
Once the article was completed, it would be posted to the blog, shared on our social media and included in the monthly newsletter. That’s how we did it. How can you do it?
AS A BRANCH OWNER, HOW DO I GET STARTED? - - - - X
Small Business Sunday will be a new campaign in your branch
territory. This gives you a great opportunity to create excitement and buzz as you reach out to
business owners. You can explain
that you’re about to kick off SBS and think their business deserves to be one of the first features.
Initially, you will have to reach out more, so it’s important that
you really appeal to the owners.
As time goes on, though, you’ll begin to receive email requests from inbound leads* on the landing page for your state. The ability to
request to be featured** is really just about perception and is a way to create demand. In reality, we’re just allowing businesses to tell us why they think their business is special and deserves to be
featured. Yet, we don’t guarantee that all businesses will make the cut. That’s why we schedule appointments with each lead to see if they meet our criteria and to learn more about them. Only if they are a good candidate to be featured do you inform them about or send them the questionnaire afterward.
This vetting process helps you to build relationships with the most
qualified leads and potential clients, all while helping you to offer something of value.
*These email leads would look similar to this: **Please Note: Each branch owner in a respective state receives an email notification when the request form is filled out by a lead.
Therefore, if you are one of multiple branches in your state, please allow the nearest branch to reach out and schedule an appointment.
WHAT’S NEXT AFTER THE QUESTIONNAIRE IS FILLED OUT? - - - - X
After you’ve met with the business owner, established that they are a good fit and sent them the questionnaire, please wait until you
receive an email confirmation that they’ve officially filled out the form.
That email would look similar to this: This email confirmation is also received by our writers, who then get started compiling the articles. It is then your responsibility to pay the cost for each article on the payment page. This raises an
important point. The goal is to receive a return on your investment. Therefore, it’s vital that you reach out to the RIGHT businesses.
FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH OUR PLATFORM - - - - X
Once our team has collected payment, written the article and published it on the SBS blog, we will reach out and let you know that you’re free to share it on your Facebook page.
We encourage you to log into our social media platform, which is
connected to your branch Facebook page. Doing so will help you to get familiar with our tools.

*Please Note: Branch owners in the same state should feel free to

maximize everyone’s reach, create more value for the featured business and potentially nudge others who don’t currently see the benefit in being featured.
Once the article is posted, let the business owner know that their article is now live for them to see and share with their audience. Make sure to attach the link to their article in the email. Here’s an example:
“Hi [business owner first name], Your Small Business Sunday feature is now live on our site and has been posted on our social channels! Our entire team loved hearing about your story and enjoyed putting this piece together.
Feel free to check out your article below and share it with your audience. It's always nice to see somebody other than yourself praising your business, right?:)
Soaplicity | Utah's Small Business Sunday We hope you enjoy the article, Thank you!
GROW YOUR FACEBOOK FOLLOWING! - - - - X
Once you’ve familiarized yourself with the social
media platform, you’ll be able to start posting
articles regularly to grow
your local following. This is the main purpose of the Facebook pages for each
branch. You will already have a few marketing blogs to
choose articles from in your “My Feeds” section.
We’ve also set up a prompt for likes on your SBS
features. When an owner completes the questionnaire, they are sent a
link to this thank you page with YOUR facebook link behind the image.
HOW DOES SBS BENEFIT SOCIAL PARAGON AS A WHOLE? - - - - X
We discussed the benefits for individual branches earlier, but what about the benefits of SBS on a larger scale? This campaign
singlehandedly covers the entire inbound methodology. SBS covers
blogging. Sharing the articles covers social media and linking to the businesses through the business information section covers SEO.
Additionally, some businesses order videos, which are then added to articles. The articles then help us to build email lists and
newsletters, both of which ultimately drive people back to our site.
The strategy works this way:
We write and post an article about a small business, which the
business then shares. When they do so, their followers are seeing
Social Paragon. This gives us more exposure than if we were simply sharing the articles with only OUR followers. Further, when their followers click on the article, they’re directed back to OUR blog. That means that we capture all of the traffic when the businesses share their featured articles. Additionally, when these businesses are featured or recognized, they
often mention it on their websites, along with a link to the article. This means inbound links for us.
“READ MORE” - http://blog.socialparagon.com/sbs/utah/soaplicity
In a nutshell, these articles increase our Facebook following by
connecting us with small businesses AND their customers. They increase traffic to our site. Also, the high-quality of the feature articles
means that these businesses don’t hesitate to look to us in the future for their marketing needs. That’s what we want, right?
EXPANDING SMALL BUSINESS SUNDAY - - - - X
The benefits of this campaign are not positive results that we HOPE to achieve. They are positive results that we HAVE achieved! That is why we are so enthusiastic about getting other branches involved. We want them to experience the same success we’ve experienced with Small Business Sunday...and then some!
It is our hope that branch owners in other states will be just as enthusiastic about this campaign.
We believe that this comprehensive guide will provide a solid
foundation for getting started. Yet, we realize that you may still have questions. If so, feel free to contact Mike Ropelato at
[email protected].
We wish you all the best and offer you our full support as you go about putting this campaign in place. Sincerely, The Social Paragon Team
