From the cows’ raw milk, they make a dozen styles of aged farmhouse cheese, ranging from mild and milky to runny and pungent to sharp and firm, that find their way to the tables of some of the finest New York restaurants, including Gramercy Tavern, Savoy, Telepan, and Picholine. This basket contains three types of Cato Corner Farm’s award-‐winning raw milk cheeses – at least two pounds of cheese total. Donor: Cato Corner Farm, LLC SILENT LOT 102 Two (750ml) bottles of Laurent-‐Perrier Champagne NV Laurent-‐Perrier traces its foundation to 1812 when a former cooper and bottler by the name of Alphonse Pierlot purchased two parcels of land named "Plaisances" and "La Tour Glorieux" in Tours-‐sur-‐Marne, France. Pierlot willed his company to his cellar master, Eugene Laurent, who ran it with his wife, Mathilde Emilie Perrier. After Eugene Laurent died in 1887 his widow, Mathilde, took control and attached her name to the company, changing it to Veuve Laurent-‐Perrier (veuve being the French word for widow). Veuve Mathilde led the company to great success, producing 50,000 cases of Champagne. Through the wars, Laurent-‐ Perrier suffered a number of misfortunes. In 1949 Bernard de Nonancourt became the owner of the company and saw it become one of the largest family-‐owned Champagne houses. The de Nonancourt family still retains majority ownership of the company. Parker rates the NV Laurent-‐Perrier Champagne 90 points but without comment. Don’t you have an occasion to celebrate? Located in the beautiful and austere Port-‐growing region of the Upper Douro valley, its history dates back to the 16th Century. All of the grapes are hand-‐picked, with a careful selection being made. Vesuvio is one of the very few estates in the Douro where all of the wines are made using the traditional treading method in granite lagares, among the largest in the Douro valley, and offered exclusively as a single Quinta Vintage Port. Vesuvio is now ranked as one of the top-‐tier Vintage Port producers. Parker rated it 93 points. You will too! Paul tells us: “Farm life instills in one a deep sense of respect for family, a love of land and the joys of collaborative effort. Our CrossBarn wines are a reflection of these ideals and of our commitment to sustainable vineyard practices and gentle winemaking techniques. The "cross barn" was nestled in the middle of our one hundred fifty year old family farm in upstate New York. A favorite haunt for my siblings and me, it took on a life of its own and remains in our memories as a place of great mystery and adventure.” Not surprisingly, the juice is good. Both Parker and Tanzer rated the 2010 with 91 points. Parker: “A delicious offering, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon CrossBarn is a beautiful wine with plenty of vintage character. Dark cherries, plums, new leather and licorice jump from the glass in this racy Cabernet Sauvignon. Freshly cut flowers and violets add complexity on the juicy, vinous finish. In 2010, the blend includes 15% Cabernet Franc, 4% Syrah and 2% Merlot.” Sounds mighty tasty. You KNOW Paul Hobbs makes great Cabernets. Donor: D&V Distributing
SILENT LOT 106 Two (750ml) bottles of Chehalem 2008 Pinot Noir Ridgecrest Vineyard, Ribbon Ridge Chehalem traces its history back to vineyard operations started by Harry Peterson-‐Nedry in 1980 at Ridgecrest Vineyards, the pioneering wine operation on Ribbon Ridge, northwest of Newberg, Oregon. Bill and Cathy Stoller joined Harry in the winery in 1993 and subsequently began Stoller Vineyards—a densely planted, 125 acres on Stoller family farmlands at the southern tip of the Dundee Hills. Chehalem’s first release was the 1990 Ridgecrest Pinot Noir. Stephen Tanzer rated the 2008 Ridgecrest Vineyard with 92 points: “Vivid red. Black raspberry and cherry-‐cola aromas are complicated by notes of smoky herbs, rose and vanilla. Pliant and appealingly sweet on entry, gaining structure and chewiness with air and offering lively cherry and dark berry flavors. Silky tannins add shape to the juicy, penetrating finish.” A small group of KMA patrons who happen to be stalwart Volunteer fans went to Oregon to have the privilege of watching their favorites get their head handed to them by the Ducks. The following day we all headed down to Dundee and Chehalem was one of the first wineries we hit. And yes, we did bring back some Ridgecrest Vineyard Pinot Noir. You should try this, you’ll like it. Donor: D&V Distributing SILENT LOT 107 One Magnum (1.5L) Ridge Vineyards 2008 Geyserville Proprietary Red Wine The history of Ridge Vineyards begins in 1885, when Osea Perrone, a doctor who became a prominent member of San Francisco's Italian community, bought 180 acres near the top of Monte Bello Ridge. He terraced the slopes and planted vineyards; using native limestone, he constructed the Monte Bello Winery, producing the first vintage under that name in 1892. This unique cellar, built into the mountainside on three levels, is Ridge's production facility. Ridge has made the Geyserville as a single-‐site zinfandel in every year since 1966. The grapes are grown in three adjoining vineyards on a defined stretch of gravelly soil. The 2008 vintage is comprised of 72% Zinfandel, 20% Carignane, 6% Petit Sirah, and 2% Mataro. Parker tasted this vintage from a barrel sample before bottling and awarded a rating of 92 – 94 points. “The 2008 Geyserville Proprietary Red (72% Zinfandel, 20% Carignan, and the rest Petite Sirah, Mataro, and Mourvedre; 14.8% alcohol) exhibits a dense ruby/purple color along with lots of glycerin, blue and black fruits, pepper, and incense.” This is a classic Zinfandel blend from Sonoma County. All Ridge wines have exceptional quality and win numerous awards. Here is a great large format bottle waiting for your next dinner party or that special occasion. Donor: Ridge Vineyards SILENT LOT 108 Two (750ml) bottles of Trefethen Family Vineyard wine in a special wood box. One each: 2011 Estate Chardonnay and 2010 Estate Merlot When the Trefethen family moved to Napa in the late 1960s, there were fewer than 20 operational wineries in Napa Valley and many of its vineyards were on life support. The family’s collective vision has proven to be prescient and rewarding. Now well into the fifth decade, Trefethen continues to consistently produce rewarding wines that are well-‐respected. Wine Enthusiast liked the 2011 Estate Chardonnay: “A fine Chardonnay, front-‐loaded with tropical fruit, Asian pear, and green apple flavors, with rich honey and vanilla from charred oak barrels. With a crunch of acidity, it’s Trefethen’s best Chardonnay in years.” Parker on the Merlot: “I enjoyed Trefethan’s 2010 Merlot Estate, a blend of 87% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Malbec. This dark ruby-‐colored, tightly knit Merlot exhibits attractive sweet and sour cherry notes intermixed with notions of spice box and earth in its compact, juicy, medium-‐bodied personality. It is well-‐balanced and pleasant.” It’s what you would expect from Trefethen. During this period he also created the highly acclaimed Switchback Ridge, Hourglass, Paloma, School House, and Engel Family wines. Foley is a master of red wine, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petite Sirah. In his review of this 92 point wine, Parker stated: “The 2010 Merlot reveals lots of cocoa, chocolate, Asian plum sauce and black cherry liqueur notes in its dense, ripe, full-‐bodied, silky,
hedonistic personality. It is hard to argue with this voluptuous, seductive California Merlot. Foley is one of the more interesting winemakers in Napa Valley. I first met Robert Foley years ago when he was making the wines at Pride Vineyards, and his wines never lack intensity, always delivering high quality as well as abundant fruit.” High praise from America’s best known wine critic. The movie “Sideways” was years ago. It did more to wreck the reputation for great Merlot than anyone can imagine. Get over it! This is great red wine from a master. It belongs on your table. Donor: Robert Foley Vineyards SILENT LOT 111 One magnum (1.5L) of Switchback Ridge 2011 Merlot Switchback Ridge produces handcrafted estate wines sourced from the Peterson Family Ranch in Calistoga. In August of this year, they will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Petersons purchasing the Napa property. Kelly Peterson Holmes is the great-‐ granddaughter and Proprietor; and, the great Robert Foley is winemaker. You know Robert Foley knows how to make world class Cab, but did you know that he makes outstanding Merlot, too? As winemaker at Pride Mountain for all of those years, he turned out some the best Merlot coming out of Napa Valley! The 2011 vintage hasn’t been rated; however, let’s consider some statistics. Parker has rated 9 vintages with an average of 91 points and only one below 90. Wine Spectator has rated 11 vintages with an average of 91.5 points, and only one lower than 90. The 2009 Merlot was the Spectator’s Number 29 Wine of the Year in 2012. Bob Foley only makes great wine, and this is no exception. You should try it. Donor: Dottie & Glenn Irwin SILENT LOT 112 One (750ml) bottle of Sandeman 1977 Vintage Port This Port house was founded by Scotsman George Sandeman in 1790, who established offices in London and Oporto, with the intention of importing Port, and also Sherry. The Sandeman family ran the business into the late 20th century, and remain involved in the business to this day, led by another George Sandeman, the seventh generation to take charge. In recent years, however, there have been new owners. From 1980 onwards it was been part of the Seagram group, but in 2002 it was taken over by Sogrape. As recently as 2008, this 35 year old vintage port scored a rating of 91 points from James Suckling of Wine Spectator. “Dark ruby-‐garnet. Very floral on the nose, with loads of berry character and hints of custard pie. Full-‐bodied and medium-‐sweet, with a wonderful mouthfeel. Smooth and caressing, with lots of fruit. Complex finish of strawberry, coffee and custard. A real beauty.” It is at its peak and waiting for you! Donor: Dr. and Mrs. William Tyler, Jr. SILENT LOT 113 One (750ml) bottle of Fonseca 1985 Vintage Port Fonseca Guimaraens, often simply called Fonseca, is one of the largest Port wine houses in Portugal. Manuel Pedro Guimarães established the company in 1822 when he acquired control of the Fonseca and Montiero Company from the Fonseca Family by purchase of the majority of Fonseca owned shares. A condition of the sale of Fonseca's shares was that the name Fonseca remain as the brand name. David Guimarães, the great-‐great-‐great grandson of the founder Manuel Pedro, has been the head winemaker since 1994, and oversees the winemaking and blending for all four Taylor Fladgate Port houses: Taylor Fladgate, Fonseca Guimaraens, Croft, and Delaforce. The Fonseca 1985 Vintage Port received 93 points from Parker in February 2013. “The 1985 Fonseca is still youthful in appearance with hardly any aging on the rim. The nose offers kirsch, sloes and Christmas cake. With time, there are subtle notes of dried fig and dates beginning to emerge and add to the complexity. The palate is medium-‐bodied and beautifully balanced on the supple, rounded entry. It is not quite as complex as the aromatics, with dates and dried fig, the finish mellow and refined. It is very elegant for a Fonseca, weighty but supremely well focused. This is a fabulous Fonseca that is ready to drink now, but will age for another 30 or 40 years.” We don’t know about you, but it wouldn’t last very long in our cellar, particularly not 30 years. Donor: Dr. and Mrs. William Tyler, Jr. SILENT LOT 114 A three year vertical (2007-‐2009) of Bell Wine Cellars Petite Sirah, Massa Ranch in 750ml bottles Situated off the beaten path, just south of Yountville, California, is an exquisite pale stone winery, shrouded by oak, bordered to the south by Hopper Slough, surrounded by vineyard and cloaked in quiet. After looking for twenty years, winemaker Anthony Bell found the perfect place to produce the wines he had long dreamed of -‐ limited production, hand crafted wines that showcase the concept of "terroir." In 1998, Bell Wine Cellars opened its doors to the public to share the beauty of the place, and the wine. The Petite Sirah is grown on a neighboring ranch to Bell. There is nothing petite about Petite Sirah. This black grape, grown throughout the warmer regions of California, produces teeth-‐staining, brawny wines with dark berry and plum fruit, a grind of spice (usually black pepper) and sturdy tannins. Once considered a rustic wine, California Petite Sirah has become softer and more polished in
recent years, as winemakers have learned to tame the tannins and astringency with various techniques in the vineyard and cellar. The vertical is unrated. However, if you like roasted or grilled meats or fowl, here’s your wine. Annie grew up in the northeast, but she knew she wanted to be in the wine business. She has worked for some legendary names over the years, including John Kongsgaard, Cathy Corison, and David Abreu. All three have their own eponymous wineries that turn out superior wine. Annie and Andy started Favia in 2003. James Laube of Wine Spectator loves the Syrah Quarzo. He started rating it with the 2005 vintage which he rated 91, and all of the rest have been rated higher. This 2007 snagged a 95 point review from Mr. Laube: “Immense and expressive, offering broad, expansive layers of wild berry and blackberry, fresh, loamy earth, pepper, spice and nutmeg, with a rich mouthfeel that lets the berry fruit fan out and gain nuance and complexity.” If you like Syrah, California style, this is your lot. Today, they are turning out Sauvignon Blanc, Rose, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, and a Meritage. All receive respectable ratings. Of course, there is one more wine and that’s the one we have here. The 2009 late harvest was rated 92 points by Wine Enthusiast: “This is tremendously sweet and rich with apricot and orange liqueur, honey and vanilla bean flavors. It slams into the sweet tooth with power, but is balanced by crisp acidity and control.” A perfect pairing with cheeses, nuts, fresh or dried fruits as well as foie gras. Heck, forget everything but the fois gras. Donor: Robert and Janet Jones, and Blair House Fine Jewelry and Antiques SILENT LOT 117 One (750ml) bottle of Château Suduiraut 1970 Sauternes Premier Cru Classé Château Suduiraut, formerly Cru du Roy and Château de Suduiraut, is a sweet white wine ranked as Premier Cru Classé (French, “First Growth”) in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855 for the Sauternes and Barsac appellations. Belonging to the Sauternes appellation in Gironde, the winery is located in Preignac in the region of Graves, adjacent to fabled Château d'Yquem. The most recent review that we can find for this wine dates back to 2005 when John Kapon, whose family business is the world’s largest fine wine auctioneer, rated it in Paris. He awarded 93 points: “The 1970 had a classic, mature Sauternes nose with wax, nut, almond, dried orange and baked honey aromas, with the wax most prevalent if anything was, closely followed by the nuts. The palate was nice and quite balanced with more mineral and citrus flavors than I expected. It still had long acidity and very good, mature flavors. It still had excellent sweetness on the palate and opened up into apricot and rock flavors.” Sauternes can last for a long time. This one is at its peak and looking for a fois gras party to crash. Donor: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Heller SILENT LOT 118 Two (750ml) bottles of Markham Merlot plus a tour and tasting for four persons at the winery Bordeaux immigrant Jean Laurent came to California in 1852 to seek gold, but instead founded one of the first wineries in Napa Valley. Bruce Markham arrived in Napa Valley almost 100 years later and purchased vineyards in Yountville, Oak Knoll and Calistoga and the old Laurent winery, which was operating as a cooperative at the time. In 1978, he founded Markham Vineyards. We are not sure which vintage this bottle will be, but the past vintages of Markham Merlot have rated in the low 90’s by Wine Spectator. Winemaker notes tell us to expect “Black pepper and tobacco aromas that swirl around the cherry cola core. Roasted nut and caramel oak flavors compliment the beautiful rich cherry fruit.” Your wine will presented at the winery during the tour and tasting. Donor: Markham Vineyards SILENT LOT 119 Three (750ml) bottles of Twomey Cellars 2008 Merlot Napa Valley Each year we remind you that Twomey Cellars and Silver Oak Cellars are sister companies. All of the Cabernet Sauvignon is made under the Silver Oak brand and the other varietals, including Merlot and Pinot Noir, are produced under the Twomey brand. Wine Enthusiast rated the 2008 Merlot with 91 points: “Made with a drop of Cabernet Franc, this Merlot is rich, smooth and bone dry. With modest alcohol, it brims with flavors of black and red currant, licorice, anise and white pepper, as well as a subtle touch of sweet, smoky new oak. The grapes come from the cool Soda Canyon area of Napa Valley, at the base of Atlas Peak.” Twomey and
Silver Oak have been loyal supporters of L’Amour du Vin for many years. They always furnish great wines for either dinner parties or independent lots. Here are three excellent bottles of Merlot from a great producer. Donor: Twomey Cellars, Jeff Flood, Southeast Representative SILENT LOT 120 One magnum (1.5L) Patrick Piuze 2008 Chablis Mont de Milieu Premier Cru Quebecois Patrick Piuze has followed a repeatedly traveled path, having struck out on his own after working as cellarmaster for Brocard (and before that he worked for Olivier Leflaive, followed by Verget). All of these storied names in Burgundy. He founded his own winery in 2008. He mainly purchases grapes and provides a varied wine range from Chablis. He now produces a variety of labels including 6 Grand Crus and 11 Premier Crus. The Mont de Milieu rated 91 points from Parker’s The Wine Advocate and 92 points from Wine Spectator. It is clear that this is a dry wine, and as with all Chablis, it is 100% Chardonnay. WS: “Lemon, apple and mineral aromas and flavors are the main course, with a vibrant structure keeping them defined. There's density, but it needs to be reconciled with the acidity. Fine length.” As with all good French Bugundy blanc wines, this will age. It is great now, but it will last easily until the turn of the decade. This is excellent Chablis. Donor: Drs. Kimbro Maguire & Penny Lynch SILENT LOT 121 One magnum [1.5L] Barnett Vineyards 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, Spring Mountain District Fiona and Hal Barnett created this vineyard and winery in 1983 with the intent of producing small amounts of hand crafted Cabernet Sauvignon wines from their estate. Since the first vintage of Barnett Vineyards, Spring Mountain has proven to deserve its own AVA and become known as a unique mesoclimate, producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlots. The vineyards are located at the top of Spring Mountain, at elevation 2,000ft, and planted on steep terraces that follow the contour of the land. The 2011 vintage in Napa Valley was challenging for just about everyone’s Cabernet with Robert Parker rating the vintage 78 points overall and irregular. However, Parker rated this particular wine with 88 points and describing an earthiness with dark berry fruit. If Parker thinks this wine is 10 points above the vintage average for California Cabernet, then you know it is a good wine. Perfect for those grilling favorites. Donor: Barnett Vineyards SILENT LOT 122 Two (750ml) bottles of Château Prieuré –Lichine 2000 Margaux Grand Cru Classé Thanks to a land donation from the Lords of Blanquefort, the priory of Saint-‐Didier de Cantenac was founded in the Romanesque era by the Saint-‐Augustin canons regular of the abbey of Vertheuil around the year 1000. During the Anglo-‐Gascon period of Guyenne (1154-‐1453), the abbey was a major stopping-‐off point in the Médoc for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. It also owned the greatest wine estates of the Médoc. In 1444, the wines produced at the Prieuré de Cantenac were at the top of the wine hierarchy of that era and were taxed by the King at the same rate as the wines of Hermitage and Clos de Vougeot, according to the Hull customs records of 1444. During the French Revolution, this church property was not subject to requisition thanks to the activism of its priest. It was only during the period of the First Empire that the Priory of Cantenac and its lands were sold to a dynasty of Bordeaux city-‐dwellers. Because of its very ancient monastic and medieval roots, Château Prieuré-‐ Lichine is an exception within the Great Classified Growths of 1855, the rest of whom originally belonged to either the nobility (the oldest estates) or the bourgeoisie (the most recent ones). The Château received a designation as a Quatrièmes Cru (fourth growth). Parker rated the 2000 with 90 points and Wine Spectator gave 91. James Suckling (WS): “A solid young red, with big, velvety tannins and lots of ripe fruit, tobacco and chocolate character. Long, fresh finish. One of the best Prieuré-‐Lichine in a long, long time.” Nothing bad came out of Bordeaux from the 2000 vintage. Donor: Robert and Janet Jones SILENT LOT 123 Two (750ml) bottles of Domaine Serene Chardonnay. One each:2008 Chardonnay Dijon Clones Cote Sud Vineyard and 2010 Chardonnay Dijon Clones Clos du Soleil Vineyard Domaine Serene has been producing stellar Burgundian-‐style wines in Oregon since the 1990 vintage. In 1999, Robert Parker named Domaine Serene as an “Outstanding producer of Oregon Pinot Noir” in his Wine Buyer’s Guide. In 2004, Domaine Serene shocked the wine community by besting the most prestigious winery in the world, Domaine de la Romanee Conti, in a blind tasting of 3 wines from each producer in vintages 1998, 1999, and 2000. Domaine Serene placed first, second, and third with the 1998 and 1999 vintages, and first and second with the 2000 vintage. It seems like a replay of the 1974 Judgement of Paris, but this time the focus was Burgundy, not Bordeaux. Harvey Steiman, Wine Spectator’s Oregon wine critic and an expert on Burgundy, rated both these wines with 93 points. Regarding the 370 case Chardonnay: “Supple and graceful, glowing with pear, lime, cream and clove flavors that expand beautifully on the long, vivid finish. This has both stuffing and elegance, with the balance to last.” His
review of the Evenstad Reserve is also flattering. Purchase this lot and find out why the wine world was rocked again by New World winemaking. These are great wines. Donor: A Friend of the KMA SILENT LOT 124 A three year vertical (2004 – 2006) of Martinelli Vineyard Pinot Noir Bondi Home Ranch “Water Trough” Vineyard in 750ml format Steve and Laurie Natelson have been supporters and donors to L’Amour du Vin for many years. It will come as no surprise to people who follow the auction that the Natelsons are fans of Martinelli, LdV’s featured vintner in 2010. This year, they have donated four different verticals of Martinelli wines – all of them single vineyard and special. The first vertical is of Pinot Noir from the Bondi Home Ranch Vineyard. Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar) rated the three bottles in this vertical 90, 93, and 92+ respectively. Robert Parker: “The Martinellis, one of the most significant vineyard owners in Sonoma, have a history going back well over one hundred years of developing impressive terroirs from which they fashion top-‐flight wines. The wines are always full-‐ bodied, expressive offerings that never cheat the consumer on flavor intensity or personality. If you are looking for a shy, restrained, wimpish wine, this is not the place for you.” OK, now! All of you full flavor Pinot hounds out there, this is your lot. Donor: Dr. Steve Natelson SILENT LOT 125 A three year vertical (2004 – 2006) of Martinelli Vineyard Pinot Noir Lolita Ranch Vineyard in 750ml format This is the second of the four Natelson-‐donated Martinelli verticals. This vertical is of Pinot Noir from the Lolita Ranch Vineyard. None of the pundits rated all three of these bottles. However, Parker and Tanzer did rate the 2005 vintage and both awarded 92 points. Taner: “Very expressive, precise aromas of spicy raspberry, redcurrant and wild strawberry. Fleshy and deep in red berry flavor, with gentle acid lift and an expansive, almost liqueur-‐like intensity on the finish. This really gains power with air but retains freshness and precision. Whatever tannins are here are completely absorbed by the lush fruit.” Another great Pinot vertical to go with your next outdoor grilling party. Donor: Dr. Steve Natelson SILENT LOT 126 One magnum (1.5) Château Rieussec 2005 Sauternes Grand Cru Classé Calling all Magret Ducks! Heck, get the Moullards and the geese, too. You are going to need a ton of fois gras to soak up this bottle. Parker and the Spectator have only rated two vintages higher that the 2005 for Château Rieussec and they both gave it a 96. Granted that Château d’Yquem is the gold standard (pardon the pun) when it comes to Sauternes. But Rieussec is just about everyone’s second choice. And, Yquem only scored one measly additional point over the Rieussec in this vintage. Based on how they score them, it’s a rounding error. Let’s be serious. James Suckling, writing for the Spectator, declares: “Shows enticing aromas of toffee, cream, dried apricot and caramel. Full-‐bodied, very sweet and thick, with honey and caramel flavors. Long and rich, oozing with sweet, ripe fruit, this is like liquid candy.” So, let’s start fattening the duck and goose livers and collecting the cheese. Winemaker notes: “A full-‐bodied Chardonnay, this wine delights with aromas of apple, a hint of graham cracker, floral notes, and honey, perfectly balanced by flavors of lemon and pear on the entry and lingering, creamy marshmallow', toasted oak notes. This versatile Chardonnay pairs perfectly with seafood, white meats, and dishes with cream sauces. Winemaker notes: “Sweet aromas of ripe raspberry and rich dark cherry. Notice wonderful Pinot character of fresh tea leaves and bergamot orange interact with aromas of fresh soil, forest floor, and mushrooms. Spicy expressions of cardamom, allspice, and fennel are just some of the many highlights that come and go as you experience the wine.” Can you resist the call to visit the Art Gallery and consume the Liquid Art? One each: Woodward Canyon 1998 Artist Series #7, Barnett Vineyards 2002 Spring Mountain District, Pine Ridge 2002 Oakville Here are three interesting Cabernet Sauvignons from Napa Valley. We start with the Woodward Canyon Artist Series #7. Some people think the bottles are too pretty to drink, but the wine is pretty good, too. Wine Enthusiast rated it 93 points. It’s a great review: “An intense, deeply extracted wine with a powerful bouquet of blackberry jam, red-‐fruit preserves, and plenty of new oak. This wine screams “Drink me!” from the first sniff. It’s an 18-‐wheeler running down a steep grade. It explodes on the palate with a cloudburst of fruit, chocolate, smoke and oak, descending via soft, smooth tannins into a ripe, seductive.” Whoa, Nellie! The Wine Enthusiast also rated the Barnett. WE bestowed 91 points on this effort calling it a “textbook Napa Cab.” Remember, the Spring Mountain District is the home of Pride, Keenan, and Vineyard 7 & 8, among others, so we know the soil is good. Finally, Wine Spectator rated the Pine Ridge 2002 Oakville with 93 points. James Laube: “An impressive display of rich, ripe, loamy currant and pretty, toasty oak. Hints of tobacco, cedar, cigar box and sage fold in to give it a complex range of flavors.” This is mighty nice Cabernet donated by a mighty nice friend of L’Amour du Vin. Donor: Russ and Florence Johnston SILENT LOT 130 Two (750ml) bottles of Bordeaux. One each: Château Chalon-‐Segur 1996 St. Estephe Grand Cru Classé and Château Bellegrave 1998 Pomerol Long-‐time friend and supporter of L’Amour du Vin, Russ Johnston, has given the museum two fine bottles of Bordeaux. The Calon-‐ Segur is a left bank Bordeaux that was ranked as a Troisièmes Cru (third growth) in the Classification of 1855. It is comprised of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Parker rated it with a 92 and Tanzer gave it a 93. Parrker: “Kudos to Calon-‐Segur, as both the 1995 and 1996 wines have a strong buy recommendation from me.” The Bellegrave is a right bank wine from the Pomerol region. By appellation rules, it must contain 100% Merlot. Wine Spectator rated it with 92 points, calling it the sleeper of the vintage and “clearly outstanding.” Both 1996 and 1998 were good vintages for Bordeaux. Here are two Grand Dames ready to dance with you. Over the years, Cakebread has garnered a lot of positive press regarding their Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays. None of the crtics has rated the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, but Parker has rated recent vintages of this wine in the low 90s. We do know that the wine is comprised of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Sirah. Tasting notes speak of black cherry, blackcurrant and blackberry flavors with a long, elegant finish with hints of chocolate. Less well-‐known, perhaps, are the top-‐notch cookbooks produced by members of the Cakebread family. Every September during harvest season, the Cakebread family invites five up-‐and-‐coming chefs and a host of local farmers to their winery for a weekend of tasting, talking, cooking, and sharing. In The Cakebread Cellars American Harvest Cookbook, Jack, Dolores, and culinary director Brian Streeter present 100 recipes and wine pairings developed by workshop chefs and the winery in honor of the twenty-‐fifth anniversary of this groundbreaking annual event. SILENT LOT 132 Two (750ml) bottles of good Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. One each: Lewis Cellars 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve and Tor Kenward Family Vineyards 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Cimarossa Vineyard In 1992 Debbie and Randy Lewis established a small family winery in Napa Valley. Total production is approximately 9,000 cases annually of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Lewis sources fruit from Calistoga, St. Helena, Rutherford and Oak Knoll for their red varietals – and we know that a lot of great Cabernet comes from those appellations. James Laube, Wine Spectator, rated the 2005 Reserve with 93 points: “Firm, rich and chewy, this is tight, concentrated and focused, with a layered, complex mix of loamy currant, cedary oak, sage and wild berry, gaining depth and length on the finish, where the flavors are deep and persistent.” Tor Kenward was a 27 year senior executive in the wine business at Beringer. He retired in 2001 to form his own eponymous winery focusing on single vineyard Chardonnays and Cabernets. Little wonder he has been so successful. Ratings for his 2006 Cimarossa Vineyards Cabernet are very consistent – 93 points from Parker and Tanzer and 92 points from James Laube at Wine Spectator. Tanzer: “Bright ruby. Aromas of blackberry, chocolate, licorice, mint and flowers. Densely packed but juicy, with terrific intensity to the dark fruit and floral flavors. At once sweet and serious cabernet. Finishes chewy and long, with sweet, building tannins.” Life is a Cabernet, oh Chum, Come to the Cabernet! Donor: A Friend of the KMA SILENT LOT 133 One (750ml) bottle of Château de Pommard 1989 Pommard Côte de Beaune Built in the Regency style in 1726 by Vivant Micault, Secretary to King Louis XV, the Château Vivant Micault replaced a feudal château that had been mistreated by history. Nothing remains today of Pommard's feudal château. Dating back to the Early Middle Ages, it was completely destroyed after falling on hard times. Yet, prior to this Dark Age, legend has it that Henry IV came to the Château to taste the wines of Pommard on his travels through Burgundy's lands. Enchanted by this incredible mansion rising up from a sea of vines, the present owner of the Château de Pommard, Maurice Giraud, had the place completely restored between 2004 and 2007. No review of this vintage was available; but with history like this, how can the wine be anything but great? Donor: Tom and Melanie Wood SILENT LOT 134 Two (750ml) bottles of Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve. One each: 1975 and 1977 vintages In 1900, when Georges de Latour’s wife, Fernande, first laid eyes on the land that would become the original Rutherford vineyard, she named it “beau lieu,” or “beautiful place.” Shortly thereafter, de Latour sold his thriving cream of tartar business, bought the four-‐acre ranch and founded Beaulieu Vineyard with the vision of making Napa Valley wines that would rival those of his native France. In 1938, he traveled to France and returned with André Tchelistcheff, famed viticulturist and enologist. Tchelistcheff introduced cold fermentation for white wines, malolactic fermentation for reds and aging red wines in small, French oak barrels. He also tasted the de Latour family’s private wine-‐what they called “Private Reserve”-‐from the 1936 vintage. This Cabernet Sauvignon-‐based wine was so distinctive that Tchelistcheff insisted it be bottled and sold as the winery’s flagship offering. The result was the inaugural release of Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1977 vintage was tasted a few years ago by James Suckling of Wine Spectator. He awarded it 90 points (higher than the original rating): “Chunky, well structured and better than expected. Excellent dark red color, with aromas of plum, cassis and berry and hints of wet earth.Full-‐bodied, with chewy tannins and a long, long finish. Still tight; needs time.” It has been a few years, and they should be ready now. SILENT AUCTION LOTS LOTS CLOSING AT 7:25 PM SILENT LOT 201 One double magnum (3L) of Egelhoff 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Bob Egelhoff is the winemaker at his eponymous winery. Bob is also winemaker at other projects throughout Napa Valley, including Amizetta, Axios, Staglin, Chappellet, Pahlmeyer, and the famed David Arthur Vineyards. That’s an impressive resume. There are no ratings on this wine, but he gets super ratings for David Arthur and his other gigs. We do know that the fruit is from the Sacrashe Vineyard and Glendale Vineyard in the hills surrounding Lake Hennessey and it’s 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker notes: “Expansively aromatic, black cherry, spice, dust and hints of violet and cinnamon are found in the bouquet. Upon tasting, the texture is very approachable with soft mountain tannins and a long creamy finish.” Friends, the fruit comes from the same area that produces Colgin, Arthur, and Chappellet. This wine has to be huge! And, it comes in a amazing 3L bottle. This lot was donated in honor of L’Amour du Vin’s great friend and supporter – the late Dr. David Lee. Donor: Karen and Neil Aldoroty-‐55 Degrees SILENT LOT 202 California Dreamin’ – three (750ml) bottles of excellent 2009 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. One Each: Caymus – Special Selection; Blankiet Estate Proprietary Red Wine Paradise Hills Vineyard; and Merus Cabernet Sauvignon The story of Charles Wagner and Caymus is recited elsewhere in these notes. The 2009 Special Selection received 93 points from James Laube, Wine Spectator (it was not rated by either Parker or Tanzer). “Temptingly rich and layered, with complex mocha, plum and wild berry fruit that's spicy and aromatic. Full-‐bodied.” Likewise, the Blankiet story is related under the description lot donated by the winery. Parker gave the 2009 Paradise Hills Cabernet 95 points: “The 2009 Paradise Hills Vineyard (81.8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16.7% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that achieved 14.9% alcohol) exhibits a beautiful perfume of scorched earth, chocolate, espresso beans, creme de cassis, plums and Asian spices. Full-‐bodied and deep.” Merus – Latin, 1. Pure, unmixed; 2. Complete, absolute, undiluted – particularly of wine. Merus only makes one wine – its Cabernet Sauvignon. Merus began as the quintessential “garage wine,” made by Merus founders Erika J. Gottl and Mark Herold in the two-‐car garage behind their home in the town of Napa. The wine won international renown starting with its first vintage in 1998, but the garage imposed serious limitations. When William Foley brought Merus into his Foley Family Wines group at the end of 2007, he bought one of Napa’s “Ghost Wineries” and made it into the modern facility that houses Merus today. The winemaker is David Lattin whose resume includes Acacia Winery, Storybook Mountain, and Kuleto Estate. The consulting winemaker is our friend David Ramey. Ratings by the critics are consistent: Laube (WS) and Tanzer – 93 points; Anotonio Galloni, Wine Advocate – 92 points. Laube: “Intense and concentrated, with a rich array of dark berry built around currant, blackberry, mineral, cedar and spice. Most impressive on the finish, where the flavors push through in style.” California Dreamin’ … This lot was donated in honor of L’Amour du Vin’s great friend and supporter – the late Dr. David Lee. Donor: Friends of David Lee SILENT LOT 203 One magnum (1.5L) Blankiet Estate 2006 Proprietary Red Wine Napa Valley PLUS a tour and tasting for four wine lovers at Blankiet Estate A year or two ago, the late Dr. David Lee first donated a bottle of Blankiet Estate as a part of an auction lot. While it is safe to say that most auction-‐goers are not familiar with Blankiet Estate, that is certainly a shame. In his own generous and sharing manner, David was introducing us to an incredible emerging cult winery from Napa Valley that warrants our attention. Unfortunately, it is only available from the winery, itself. Robert Parker has been essential to the success of Blankiet Estate – or more accurately, to building the acclaim around the astounding wines that Claude Blankiet produces. Parker rated the 2006 with 95+ points, and Stephen Tanzer was close behind with 95 points. Parker: “The gorgeous 2006 Proprietary Red Wine (a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot) exhibits aromas of melted chocolate, espresso roast, mocha, blackberries, and black cherries along with a full-‐bodied, intense mouthfeel, sweet tannins, and a note of scorched earth/burning embers, which brings to mind a rich vintage from the northern Graves area of Bordeaux. This stunning 2006 is already revealing secondary nuances as well as significant complexity. “ He goes on to say: “The wine’s style tends to be similar to a top-‐flight Graves from Bordeaux, only richer because of the thicker, juicier, darker, Napa Valley fruit.” Translation: “OMG! This juice really rocks!” Now, picture yourself at the beautiful estate in the Paradise Hills having a phenomenal tour and then you get to sit down and taste through a flight of this top-‐ notch wine! The last time Parker gave the Blankiet Proprietary Red a bottle rating below 95 points was – NEVER! And you are going to taste through this! – But only if you buy it! What are you waiting for? SILENT LOT 204 One double magnum (3L) of Meteor Vineyard 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Perseid Located almost due east of Napa on the far side of the Silverado Trail, the Coombsville appellation is home to many great wineries. Meteor started as a dream 35 years ago when Barry Schuler, a college student with an emerging passion for wine, first visited Napa Valley. After roaming the valley and tasting, he was struck by the burning desire to someday live in Napa, grow grapes and make wine that could take its place among the World’s greats. Barry and his wife Tracy bought the property that is now Meteor Vineyard in 1998. By the time the vineyard was ready for it’s first harvest, prestigious names such as Etude, Vineyard 29, Arietta, Favia and Lail Vineyards were clamoring to work in the vineyard. In 2003 the Schulers decided to produce a very small quantity of 100% Meteor Vineyard wine, to discover what a singular expression of the vineyard would be. The results were so impressive that they decided to make Barry’s 35 year old dream come true; and in 2004, the first Meteor vintage was born. Parker rated the 2007 Perseid with 93 points: “The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Perseid (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) exhibits abundant aromas of crushed rock, charcoal, creme de cassis and subtle smoke in a ripe, full-‐bodied, exuberant style with terrific intensity, texture and concentration. There is not a hard edge to be found in this pure, dramatic Cabernet.” One last note – Meteor normally doesn’t donate bottles of wine to auctions – only perhaps a tour and tasting. So, the bottle is indeed a very special tribute to L’Amour du Vin. This lot was donated in honor of L’Amour du Vin’s great friend and supporter – the late Dr. David Lee and his dedication to the KMA. Donor: Barry and Tracy Schuler, Meteor Vineyard SILENT LOT 205 One (750ml) bottle and a signed magnum (1.5L) of BRAND 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley in custom cedar boxes; PLUS a private tour and tasting for four guests at BRAND Napa Valley In unique terroir above the cloud line on top of famed Pritchard Hill in Napa Valley are the vineyards of BRAND. In two distinctive elevations twelve acres of vines are planted in the red volcanic soils surrounded by massive boulders. The BRAND estate shares the profile of the Oakville appellation with the additional benefit of higher elevation and hillsides. BRAND’s neighbors in the high rent district in which they reside are Colgin, David Arthur, and Ovid. BRAND’s total varietal selection consists of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Cabernet Franc, 17% Petit Verdot and 5% Malbec. At this time Cabernet Sauvignon is the single varietal used to produce BRAND Cabernet Sauvignon. BRAND’s winemaker is the incomparable Philippe Melka who, in addition to his own great eponymous winery, applies his craft and skill at some of the best wineries in Napa Valley, including Vineyard 29, Quintessa, Seavey, and Farichild Family Vineyards. He has worked at such renowned wineries as Châeau Hau Brion, Lail Vineyards, and Dominus – to name a few. The BRAND 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon was rated 91 points by James Laube, Wine Spectator, who is extremely picky about his Cabernets. The magnum bottle is signed by Philippe Melka in memory of Dr. David Lee. You and three other people will explore the cave, library and the winey, including a tasting of this fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon that winemaker Melka has so lovingly produced. It’s hard to find dirt any better than this in Napa, and the view of Lake Hennessey is spectacular. If you love good Cabernet, you should buy this lot and find out what the hype it all about. Donor: Brand Napa Valley SILENT LOT 301 One magnum (1.5L) of Paul Hobbs 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley Paul Hobbs Winery was the Featured Vintner at L’Amour du Vin in 2007. Those who attended will remember his elegant Chardonnays and monolithic Cabernets. You might also remember that he makes a pretty good Pinot Noir, too. The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley takes us back to his original roots. However, the 2011 vintage in Napa was fraught with peril. Parker rated the overall vintage 78 points for Cabernet Sauvignon and noted that it was irregular. With that as a backdrop, the 88 point rating he bestowed on Hobbs’ 2011 effort is an excellent rating. Parker: “The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa displays a denser saturated ruby/purple color as well as a pure, spicy bouquet with lots of black currants, medium body and an abrupt, gritty finish. This excellent Cabernet should be drunk in its first 7-‐8 years of life.” Paul Hobbs makes nothing but great wine. This magnum is no exception. Donor: Paul Hobbs Winery SILENT LOT 302 A three year vertical (2003 – 2005) of Martinelli Vineyards Zinfandel Giuseppe and Louisa Vineyard in 750ml format This is the third of the four Natelson-‐donated Martinelli verticals. This vertical is of Zinfandel from the Giuseppi and Louisa Vineyard. Back in the 1880s, Giuseppe Martinelli and Louisa Vellutini eloped from their small village in the Tuscany region of Italy, making their way to California looking for land to farm and start a winery. Giuseppe had been a winemaker in Italy and with his viticulture knowledge he was hired to plant a vineyard for a farmer in Forestville. Within two years he earned enough money, and
borrowed some from a local wood cutter, to purchase land of his own. One of the first varietals, Guiseppe and Louisa planted was Zinfandel. Almost a century later, their grandson, Lee Martinelli, Sr., planted a vineyard and named it after the founders. Parker rated the three bottles in this vertical 90, 93, and 94, respectively. “Of course, the Martinellis made their reputation with their extraordinary Zinfandels, and the newest of the cuvees is the Zinfandel Giuseppe & Luisa. The 2005 is a blockbuster, with deep ruby/purple color and a big, sweet nose of ripe figs, strawberry and cherry jam, mincemeat, and peppery spices. It is full-‐bodied, heady, and opulent.” He closes with: “Kudos to the Martinelli family, one of the great old winemaking families of Northern California.” We have found that good Zinfandels pair well with spicy food, not to mention anything poultry or red meat that has been roasted or grilled. We even pair it with fish, depending on the preparation. If you like good Zin, you should be all over this lot! Donor: Dr. Steve Natelson SILENT LOT 303 "A Taste of ROAR." Four (750ml) bottles of ROAR 2011 Santa Lucia Highlands wine. One each: Rosella's Vineyard Pinot Noir; Sierra Mar Vineyard Pinot Noir; Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir; and, Rosella's Vineyard Chardonnay Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fans of the Santa Lucia Highlands area will recognize single vineyard wines from Rosella’s Vineyard. Top wineries have sourced this fruit for their own single vineyard labels over the years, including Kosta Browne, Copain, Arcadian, Morgan, and Siduri – just to name a few. ROAR is owned by Gary and Rosella Franscioni – the namesakes for two famed vineyards. Parker, himself, has stated: “Ever since a ROAR Pinot Noir blew away a number of great grand cru Burgundies in a blind tasting I hosted at the Culinary Institute in Napa for over 100 winemakers and consumers, I have taken a special interest in following the wines from this producer. They go from strength to strength, and no doubt this is the best Chardonnay and the finest Pinot Noirs Gary Franscioni and his wife Rosella have yet produced.” It’s hard to get a better recommendation than that! Incidentally, he rated these bottles 93+, 92, 93, and 90 points, respectively. WS rated them 93, 93, 94, 91. Consistent results from a great producer. If Michael Browne wants it for Kosta Browne and with ratings like that, you have to try it! Donor: Melissa J. Burleson SILENT LOT 304 Twelve (375ml) bottles of Heitz Ink Grade Port NV Most of us have known Heitz Cellars and their wines for years. And they have been really good years, too. The winery celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2011. The first single-‐vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley was produced there from Martha’s Vineyard. As devotees of leisurely dining, the Heitz family have given all of us a reason to linger since the introduction of their Ink Grade Port. Inspired by his travels in Portugal, David Heitz planted eleven ancient Portuguese varietals in the early 1990s that are flourishing at their Napa Valley home. In 1994, Heitz Cellars introduced Ink Grade Port. Comprised of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Sauzao, Tinta Cao, Tinta Bairrada, Tinta Madeira, Tinta Amarela and Bastardo, the current blend was release in Fall of 2011. Winemaker notes: “The lush, fruity character of this wine is produced with a harmonious blend of eight classic Portuguese varieties from the 2005, 2006 and 2007 vintages. Dark berry flavors laced with notes of honey cross the palate with the smoothness of velvet. You will not want to wait for dessert! Heitz Ink Grade Port is also terrific paired with your favorite cheese or by itself as an aperitif.” It sounds like very yummy juice, indeed! Donor: Heitz Wine Cellars SILENT LOT 305 Two (750ml) bottles of Silver Oak 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon. One each: Alexander Valley and Napa Valley, each in a wood box with two logo glasses The story of Silver Oak Cellars has been told in notes for L’Amour du Vin over the years many times. It bears repeating that Silver Oak was one of the very early cult Cabernet Sauvignon wines – a reputation that has hardly diminished over the years. Silver Oak Cellars only produces Cabernet Sauvignon; it comes in two appellations – Alexander Valley and Napa Valley. In recent years, the Napa Valley has enjoyed a slightly stronger reputation but both are always very good. The Alexander Valley is comprised of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon; the Napa Valley is a blend comprised of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. Unfortunately, neither of the 2009s have been rated. What we do know is that they will be bold, full-‐bodied wines with long silky finishes. Each bottle comes in a wood gift box with two stemmed logo glasses that are perfect for drinking Silver Oak wine. You will find that Silver Oak is a huge steakhouse favorite – for good reason. Find out why, if you don’t already know. Donor: Silver Oak Cellars SILENT LOT 306 Two magnums (1.5L) of Switchback Ridge Petite Sirah. One each: 2010 and 2011 The story of Switchback Ridge is told elsewhere in these notes. Of the three varietals produced by Switchback Ridge, perhaps the Petite Sirah is the most special. It contains some vines that are nearing 100 years in age and a high percentage are older than 75 years. Winemaker Robert Foley has enticed some absolutely amazing juice out of these vines. Parker did not rate either of these
bottles but he has rated 9 vintages with an average score of 95+ with only three bottles rated below a 95 and none below 91. Wine Spectator has rated the 2010 Petite Sirah 94 points: “Wonderfully expressive, with a ripe and juicy mix of blackberry, huckleberry and blueberry flavors, a mouthful of rustic tannins and notes of spice, black tea and cigar box. Balanced and dense, with tannins that firm up on the finish.” The 2011 hasn’t been rated but the results aren’t going to be different. The 2010 can be drunk now (a good 90 minutes to breath is recommended) but it will keep at least halfway through the next decade. Buy this wine; it is a huge treat! The earliest evidence of the firm’s activity as a Port shipper dates from 1588, coincidentally the year of the first ever recorded shipments of Port wine. The company was originally known as Phayre & Bradley after its founding partners and took its present name in 1736 when it was joined by John Croft, a member of an old and distinguished family of Yorkshire wine merchants. In 1911 the House of Croft was acquired by the Gilbeys, the distinguished English wine trade family. It is now owned and run by descendants of two old Port wine families, the Yeatmans and Fladgates. James Suckling, writing for Wine Spectator awarded the 1963 Croft Vintage Port 91 points: “Has great elegance and harmony, and should continue to improve for many years. Medium ruby-‐red, with very fresh plum aromas, medium-‐bodied, with very delicate fresh fruit flavors, lively acidity and a delicate finish.” Mighty nice description – and he had tasted it in 1989 after it was 25 years old! This is located in the countryside outside of Florence on the road to the Mugello Valley to the north of the city. Obviously the history of Antinori is much too long to recite here. Let’s just say that Antinori has been make exceptional wines for about 830 years! The whole IGT concept in Italy was created because of some of the wines that Antinori produced that didn’t match the requirements for the local DOC and later DOCG wines. The original offender, for which we all are eternally gratefull, was Antinori’s Tignanello, but Solaia doesn’t conform either – and that is not a bad thing! Parker’s The Wine Advocate rated it 94 – twice; Stephen Tanzer – 95; and Wine Spectator – 97 points. Can you say rock star? Solaia is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese, and 5% Cabernet Franc. Something along the idea of a Bordeaux blend but the Sangiovese is much different from the classical Merlot. The Cabernets give it structure and elegance, but the Sangiovese gives it soul! It is a brooding monster waiting spring its attack on you. If you know anything about Antinori and Solaia, we will see you at the bidding sheet. Les Forts de Latour was labeled in 1966, and continues to maintain the strong brand image to this day. Parker, Wine Spectator and Tanzer all rated the wine with 90 points. Parker: “Latour's second wine, Forts de Latour, is now one of the two or three finest second wines of Bordeaux. The terrific, dark ruby/purple-‐colored 1995 possesses a sweet, jammy black fruit-‐scented nose intertwined with smoky minerals, earth, and spicy oak. The wine is surprisingly thick and rich in the mouth, with its glycerin and concentration of fruit largely concealing the moderate tannin.” The wine is now at its peak maturity and is ready to rock and roll. This is great juice from the same vineyards that produce the fabled Grand Vin. Donor: Dee and Jimmy Haslam SILENT LOT 313 Three (750ml) bottles of Silver Oak Cellars 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley The story of Silver Oak is told elsewhere in these notes. Originally available in a single label, Silver Oak began producing the Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley some years ago. Silver Oak was already one of the first cult wines that became synonymous with steakhouse. The advent of the Napa Valley label just made it further entrenched. In most years, the Napa Valley offering receives superior ratings to the Alexander Valley offering. For the 2008 vintage, Wine Enthusiast awarded each of them 91 points. Regarding the Napa Valley: “It’s easy to see why Silver Oak remains so popular with the restaurant crowd. It’s made in a more restrained style than many other Napa Cabs. There’s plenty of berry and currant fruit as well as oak, but it’s accompanied by tobacco and herbs that give the wine an earthiness. What the wine lacks in dazzle it more than makes up for in elegance and subtlety.” Crank up the grill, there is serious steak wine in the house! Donor: Silver Oak Cellars, Jeff Flood, Southeast Representative SILENT LOT 314 One (750ml) bottle of Opus One 1999 Proprietary Red Wine Opus One is a joint partnership founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. The first vintage was 1979. In 1981 a single case of the joint venture wine sold for $24,000 at the first Napa Valley Wine Auction – the highest price ever paid for a California wine. From that time forward, Opus One has enjoyed a rich heritage. James Laube, WS, rated this wine with 93 points: “An exquisite, complex, stylish wine, wearing a cloak of earthy, leathery tannins around flavors of mineral, currant, earth and blackberry. Gains intensity and shows its depth and concentration on the finish, which is long and detailed.” Most people we know respond to inquiries about Opus One with the comment “Open One.” Here is your opportunity to do just that. Donor: Geoff and Pat Wolpert SILENT LOT 315 Six (750ml) bottles of Pride Mountain Vineyards Merlot. Three each: 2006 and 2007 The history of Pride Mountain Vineyards and L’Amour du Vin is told elsewhere in these notes. While Pride Mountain is best known for the tremendous Cabernet Sauvignons and the Clarets they produce, they are also a stellar producer of Merlot. Both of these vintages were produced during the transition between storied Robert Foley and Sally Johnston. Wine Spectator scored the 2006 with 89 points and the 2007 with 94 points. In fact, the 2007 was Wine Spectator’s Number 34 Ranked Wine of the Year in the Top Hundred Ranking for 2010. “Lush and rich, yet impeccably structured, with bold red currant and toasty mocha aromas and layered
flavors of ripe plum, loamy earth and spice, finishing with big but ripe tannins.” This is the same wine that Parker once called “liquid Viagra.” What the heck, it can’t hurt!” Donor: James Mason SILENT LOT 316 Two magnums (1.5L) of Patz & Hall wines. One each: 2010 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard Carneros and 2010 Pinot Noir Carneros For at least the past twenty years, Patz & Hall has been one of California’s finest negociant firms, accessing top quality fruit and vinifying and bottling their wines with minimal intervention. It makes highly-‐regarded Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. Stephen Tanzer rated the 2010 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard with 93 points. “Vibrant aromas of lemon zest and minerals with a touch of dusty brown spices. A delicately floral, spicy 2010 with a tart lemon flavor and a lovely impression of salty mineral extract. Very tactile, dry and uncompromising Chardonnay. This very suave, refined wine finishes with a strong stony quality and a light touch.” The 2010 Pinot Noir Carneros received 95 outstanding points from James Laube, Wine Spectator. Further, the wine was selected as the Number 31 wine in Spectators Top Hundred Wines of 2013. “Combines deliciously ripe dark berry fruit with a graceful texture and deft balance, featuring juicy wild berry and blackberry at the core. Floral, spice and anise touches linger on the finish.” Patz & Hall tell us that this is the end of their inventory on these two wonderful wines. Patz & Hall wines are consistently top quality and well received. Here are two great examples of the wines they produce. Donor: Patz & Hall Winery SILENT LOT 317 Two magnums (1.5L) of Switchback Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon. One each: 2010 and 2011 The story of Switchback Ridge is told elsewhere in these notes. If you have been reading along, you know the winemaker is Robert Foley and you should know that he makes remarkable Cabernets. He has been proving it over the years, first at Pride Mountain and in his own eponymous winery. Parker did not rate either of these bottles but he has rated 9 vintages with an average score of 93+ with only one bottle rated below a 92 and it was a 90+. Wine Spectator’s James Laube has rated the 2010 Petite Sirah 91 points: “Deftly balanced, with an enticing mix of light, mocha-‐laced oak and a core of dark berry. Supple-‐textured, featuring notes of dusty earth, cedar and crushed rock, this ends with a long, sustained finish.” The 2011 hasn’t been rated. This year at L’Amour du Vin seems to be a great year for Cabernet Sauvignon – and Switchback Ridge deserves its place in the pantheon of great Cabs available for you here tonight. Donor: Dottie & Glenn Irwin SILENT LOT 318 One magnum (1.5L) of Revana Family Vineyard 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley In 1997, while visiting the Napa Valley, Dr. Revana discovered a small parcel of prime vineyard land in St. Helena. Dr. Madaiah Revana immediately sensed the property’s potential. The area was already known for producing some of the world’s most sought after Cabernet Sauvignon. Studies of the soil composition confirmed that it was an ideal location for premium Bordeaux varieties. In 1998, Dr. Revana hired acclaimed vineyard manager Jim Barbour to plant and maintain the 9-‐acre estate vineyard. Renowned winemaker Heidi Barrett – Screaming Eagle among many others – has been responsible for crafting the exceptional wines of the Revana Estate vineyard since its first vintage in 2001. Today winemaker Thomas Brown continues the tradition of making world-‐ class Cabernet Sauvignon in the Revana style. The 2005 Cabernet received a rating of 92+ from Parker: “Deep plum/purple in color with a sweet nose of burning embers, charcoal, black currants, and some subtle smoked herbs, the wine displays terrific aromatic complexity and a full-‐bodied, nicely layered palate impression, with integrated acidity, tannin, alcohol, and wood.” Dr. Revana is a renowned heart surgeon from Houston. He believes that Cabernet Sauvignon is good for your health – he told us so. Follow the Doctor’s advice. Donor: A Friend of the KMA SILENT LOT 319 A three year vertical (2004 – 2006) of Martinelli Vineyards Zinfandel Jackass Vineyard in 750ml format This is the fourth of the Natelson-‐donated Martinelli verticals. This vertical is of Zinfandel from the Jackass Vineyard. A brief thumbnail history of Giuseppe and Louisa Martinelli’s story is outlined elsewhere in these notes. To add a little more to the story, Jackass Vineyard was planted in the late 1800s in the splendid Russian River Valley. It was the first vineyard planted by Guiseppe and Louisa. This eight acre vineyard thrives on a steep rolling hillside which surrounds the west side of the Jackass Hill Vineyard. The old head pruned vines are farmed much the same way as they were over a century ago; without the use of trellising, irrigation, or pesticides. This south easterly exposure remains the steepest non-‐terraced vineyard in Sonoma County. Parker rated the three bottles in this vertical 93, 95, and 94, respectively. In speaking about this wine, Parker stated: “Martinelli’s Zinfandel is a rich, high-‐octane wine of considerable intensity, fragrance, and richness. This is an amazing wine – dense, full-‐bodied, idiosyncratic, and individualistic. It is an amazing wine and a provocative example of the heights Zinfandel can reach but so rarely
does.” You get the idea. Hundred year old vines produce very concentrated juice. Alcohol contents of this trio are near or above 17%. It simply doesn’t get better than this! Donor: Dr. Steve Natelson SILENT LOT 320 Three (750ml) bottle vertical of Silver Oak Cellers Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley. One each: 1991, 1992 and 1995 vintages The stories of Silver Oak Cellars and of the differences between the Napa Valley and the Alexander Valley offerings are told elsewhere in these notes. So, let’s focus on this vertical of the Napa Valley offering. Parker ratings for this vertical are outstanding – 95, 94, and 95 points respectively. That’s the Silver Oak that built the massive reputation the wine enjoys across the steakhouse landscape in this country. A gazillion consultants can’t be wrong. They and their clients have dined on meat, potatoes and Silver Oak for three decades – and here is the proof. This is a Parker rhetorical discussion of what makes Silver Oak great: “Silver Oak's Cabernet Sauvignons are among the most popular wines of California. I have heard mindboggling stories about the huge throng of people, ranging from lawyers in three-‐piece suits, to show girls and Hell's Angels on motorcycles, that shows up at the winery on the day Silver Oak releases its newest vintage. What a testament to the immensely popular style of these wines! 65% of the production is sold within California and 60% of the total production goes directly to restaurants. I have often pondered why Silver Oak's Cabernets are so popular. Certainly Justin Meyer has always believed in harvesting very ripe, physiologically mature fruit. Moreover, he has never spared any expense in utilizing a high percentage of new oak. For example, the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is aged for thirty months in 100% new oak and the Alexander Valley wine is aged for thirty months in 50% new oak and 50% used barrels. It seems to me the reason for the success of these wines is that Meyer has always recognized (1) that wine is a beverage of pleasure, (2) that the wine's texture is of considerable significance, and (3) that excessive acidification of his Cabernets would compromise their character as well as hedonistic value. This philosophy has ensured a voluptuous, rich, chewy style of Cabernet, without the shrill, tart, high acid, compact, lean, unpleasant character of many other California Cabernets. Justin Meyer's winemaking decisions have resulted in lavishly rich, exotic, crowd-‐pleasing Cabernets that can drink fabulously well young but have the cunning ability to age well.” Donor: Jim and Cate Biggs SILENT LOT 321 Six (750ml) bottles of Châteauneuf du Pape. One each: Domaine de la Mordoree 1999 Cuvée La Reine des Bois; Domaine de la Vieille Julienne 1998 Vieilles Vignes; Domaine de Panisse 2000 Noble Revelation; Ogier Caves des Papes 1998 Les Closiers; Domaine Bois de Boursan 2000 Cuvée des Felix; and, Vignobles Jean Royer 2001 Where to start? You should know that Châteauneuf du Pape comes from the southern Rhone Valley in the area surrounding the village of the same name not far from Avignon. The name means “New House of the Pope” and dates back to 1308, when Clement V had the seat of power of the Catholic Church moved to southern France. Red wines from this area are blends primarily of GSM – Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre but there are a total of 18 different grapes allowed in the appellation wines. Almost 90% of the land grows one of the 3 mainstay grapes with Grenache having the large dominance with 72%. Ratings on these bottles indicate a mighty tasty mix. Respectively, they are: 95 WS; 96 RP and WS; 95 RP; 91 WS; 96 RP; and an 88-‐90 barrel tasting RP. So, that makes the Parker average about 94 for the ones he rated and the Spectator average 94 for the 3 they rated. That is great Châteauneuf du Pape. Some suggest that the best food pairing with CdP are lamb, beef, pork, game, and most fowl – particularly when roasted or grilled. To give you a hint, one review of the Vieille Julienne stated: “Like a bowl of mousse chocolat, here's one for the hedonists. Ultrathick, velvety, rich and ripe, layered with cigar box, mocha, coffee, chocolate and roasted nut notes and the cleanest, loveliest raspberry, black cherry and currant. An amazing achievement, even in this magical vintage.” Frankly, they are all that way. If you like red wine, you almost certainly will like this lot. No, it’s not Cabernet Sauvignon – it’s much more elegant than that. Donor: Peggy & Jerry Faerber SILENT LOT 322 Two signed magnums (1.5L) of Spottswoode Estate wine. One each: 2012 Sauvignon Blanc and 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon 30th Anniversary Vintage Surely everyone remembers our featured vintner last year, Mary Novak, and her daughters Beth Novak Milliken and Lindy Novak, and the wonderful Spottswoode wines. The Sauvignon Blanc was sublime, and OH! Cabernets! This year Spottswoode has graciously contributed two magnums of their wonderful wine. Both bottles are signed by Mary and Beth. The 2012 Sauvignon Blanc has only been rated by Wine Spectator which bestowed 90 points: “Offers a nice balance of elegance and power, with crisp lime, grapefruit and apricot flavors, featuring plenty of honeydew melon notes. A clean, crisp, refreshing acidity makes all the flavors fresh and bright.” Likewise, the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon 30th Anniversary Vintage has only been rated once. Robert Parker awarded it 90 points in a vintage that was irratic and unpredictable in Napa Valley. “A surprisingly strong effort, the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits hints of black olives and tapenade as well as copious notes of creme de cassis, licorice and forest floor. Medium to full-‐bodied and atypically concentrated for a 2011, this is another tour de force from Spottswoode that boasts
beautiful fruit and a long finish. Kudos to the Novack family!” Many thanks to the Novaks and Spottswoode for their continuing support of L'Amour du Vin. Here is one thing we all know – No Bad Wine Comes From Spottswoode! These are great wines and they belong in your cellar and on your table. Donor: Spottswoode Estate Vineyard and Winery SILENT LOT 323 One magnum (1.5L) bottle of Leonetti Cellars 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley Leonetti has been turning out stunning Cabernet Sauvignon for years. Parker has been rating their Cabernet Sauvignon since 1989 and only 3 times have the scores been under 90 and all three of those were 89. He hasn’t rated a vintage out of the 90s since the turn of the millennium. His Wine Advocate rated the 2010 a solid 97+ points! “More serious, edgy and structured, the spectacular 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon checks in as a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 4% Carmenere. Layered, pure and complex, with ethereal spice-‐laced black currant and blackberry fruit, singed herbs, coffee and floral notes on the nose, this full-‐bodied, impeccably balanced 2010 has phenomenal purity of fruit, a great mid-‐palate and masses of finely polished, perfectly ripe tannin that coat the palate. Brilliant on all accounts, it will live to see its 25th birthday in fine form. Located in Walla Walla, made by Chris Figgins, and a benchmark estate, Leonetti Cellars produces seriously rich efforts that have a perfect blend of power and finesse, with gorgeously managed tannin, seamless textures and awesome purity. The 2010s here are some of the greatest wines of the vintage.” Any questions? We didn’t think so. Equally important, the winner will bypass the four year waiting list and be placed directly on the coveted Leonetti Cellar mailing list. Once placed on the list, the winning bidder will have access to order up to three cases during Leonetti Cellar’s wine release each spring and partcipate in a vist, tour and tasting at the winery during Leonetti weekend every May. Donor: Leonetti Cellar SILENT LOT 324 One double magnum (3L) of Pride Mountain Vineyards 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley signed by Steve Pride in a custom wooden box Many of you will remember when Steve Pride was here in 2008 as Pride Mountain Vineyards was L’Amour du Vin’s Featured Winery. Pride has been a stalwart supporter of our event and we are extremely grateful for all they have done. The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded 93+ points for Parker’s The Wine Advocate and 91+ from Stephen Tanzer. WA: “The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is brighter, fresher and more vibrant than the 2009. Black cherries, mocha, violets, licorice and graphite all jump from the glass. The 2010 is quite typical of the vintage in its verve, cut, focus and minerality. This is a terrific showing.” Pride Mountain has turned out amazing red wines for years. Their Cabernets and Cabernet Blends are consistently among the finest Napa Valley has to offer. You know you want it. Donor: Glass Bazaar SILENT LOT 326 Two magnums (1.5L) of Vineyard 7 & 8 Estate wine. One each: 2010 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and 2011 Estate Chardonnay Let us take you back to the 2011 L’Amour du Vin. Do you remember the fabulous food of Linton Hopkins? How about the incredible wines from Morlet Family Vineyards and Vineyard 7 & 8? It was certainly one of the best experiences we have had together. Well, the wines at Vineyard 7 & 8 are still made by the incomparable Luc Morlet and assistant winemaker Wes Steffans and they are still among the best Spring Mountain and Napa have to offer. Wine Spectator’s James Laube rated the 2011 Estate Chardonnay with 92 points: “Offers a range of flavors, with creamy vanilla, green apple, pear and smoky oak notes, imparting a butterscotch element.” Laube isn’t easy to please so this is a tribute to the finesse that Luc and Wesley have brought to this wine. Robert Parker rated the 2011 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon with 95 magnificent points: “The gorgeous 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate from Spring Mountain displays an opaque purple color along with an intense nose of black currants, licorice and flowers. This rich, full-‐bodied, well-‐balanced Cabernet possesses sweet tannin, adequate acidity for uplift and well-‐integrated wood and alcohol. Especially appealing is the wine’s multilayered texture and long finish. Quite simply, it is the finest wine I have yet tasted from Vineyard 7 & 8.” Now that’s a mouthful! We had the privilege of sitting next to Wes Steffans at a wine dinner in Atlanta in March 2013. Wes feels that the wines are getting even better each year and that the best is yet to come! These wines had not been released at that point, but now we know what he meant! Thanks to our great friend Wes for providing these lovely wines! Donor: Vineyard 7&8
SILENT LOT 327 One magnum (1.5L) of Gandona Vineyards 2011 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley plus a tour and tasting for four persons at the winery Growing up in Portugal, Manuel Pires spent summers on his grandfather’s Quinta in the famed wine region of Douro. There, he made a promise to one day live life working the land. In 2006, Manuel and his wife, Cristina, purchased an estate on Pritchard Hill and began development of what would become Gandona Estate. Together with winemaker, Philippe Melka, and viticulturalist, Jim Barbour, they dedicate themselves to producing world-‐class wines. If you read all of the notes to this auction, you know that Pritchard Hill is the home of some excellent wineries, including Colgin, David Arthur, and BRAND. Philippe Melka has also been discussed elsewhere in these notes and he is one of the most sought-‐after winemakers and consultants in Napa Valley. The result is yet another great Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2011 Gandona Estate was rated 91 by Parker and 90-‐92 in a barrel tasting by Stephen Tanzer. Parker: also impressive, the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill (300 cases of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon) offers black raspberry, charcoal and black currant fruit intertwined with notions of licorice and barrique smells. Deep, fleshy and medium-‐bodied with copious fruit, it is a rich, fruity 2011 that is evolving quickly.” There is a lot of great Cabernet Sauvignon in this auction, and this is surely one of them. Donor: Manuel and Cristina Pires SILENT LOT 328 Two (750ml) bottles of great Italians wine. One each: Angelo Gaja 2000 Sori San Lorenzo Barbaresco-‐Langhe and Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona 1997 Brunello di Montalcino DOCG In this lot we have two very interesting bottles of Italian red wine. First, the Piccolmini 1997 Brunello di Montalcino DOCG from Tuscany was a blockbuster. Parker rated the bottle 96 points: “The terrific 1997 Brunello di Montalcino boasts a staggering aromatic profile of soy sauce, roasted meats, dried herbs, jammy black and red fruits, and Asian spices. This full-‐bodied, superbly concentrated, layered, multidimensional Brunello is the kind of wine one expects from such a renowned region, but so rarely receives. This beauty should drink well young yet evolve effortlessly for 15+ years.” The review was written in 2001, so the wine is still at peak maturity for another couple of years. It will be a marvelous Burnello. And then, there’s the Gaja! Angelo Gaja makes incredible wines! Parker rated the 2000 Sori San Lorenzo with 95 points, but James Suckling, Wine Spectator topped that with a 97 rating. JS: “Serious dark color, with meaty, earthy aromas that blow off to ultraripe and exotic fruit. Fresh truffles and porcini. Almost Port-‐like in the end. Full-‐bodied, with masses of velvety tannins and a long, long, caressing finish. Solid. This was the first of Gaja's single-‐vineyard Barbarescos to be vinified separately, in 1967.” It doesn’t get any better than this. Donor: A Friend of the KMA SILENT LOT 329 Four (750ml) bottles of Napa Valley Red Wine. One each: Stewart 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Nomad; Inglenook 2009 Rubicon; Inglenook 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Cask; and Rubicon Estate 2008 Rubicon Knoxville Beverage Company has been a staunch supporter of L’Amour du Vin over the years. We really appreciate everything that they do for KMA and L’Amour du Vin. Here are four stellar Cabernet Sauvignon-‐based wines from Napa Valley that Knoxville Beverage has provided this year. The Stewart 2007 Nomad was rated 95 points by Parker who clearly loved the wine: “The sensational 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Nomad is a hussy of a wine, It boasts an opaque purple color as well as a sexy perfume of camphor, barbecue smoke, blackberries, cassis and graphite. Full-‐bodied and concentrated with decent acidity, high but sweet, well-‐integrated tannins and a multidimensional mid-‐palate and finish.” Enough said! In 1975, Francis Ford Coppola purchased part of the historic Inglenook property, intent on restoring the estate’s legacy of creating world-‐class wines equal to those that founder Gustave Niebaum and his grandnephew John Daniel Jr. produced for decades. Rubicon, the estate’s flagship wine since 1978, is produced from the best fruit on the estate and comprised of the historic Gustave Niebaum Cabernet selection, first planted on the property in the 1880s. Coppola has now assembled all of the old Inglenook Estate and changed the name of his winery back to Inglenook – note the difference in names between the 2008 and 2009 Rubicon. Parker’s The Wine Advocate rated the 2009 Rubicon 92 points and the 2009 Cask 90 points. The 2008 Rubicon rated 92 points from James Laube at Wine Spectator. In the glory days, Inglenook was, perhaps, the premier wine in Napa Valley. Coppola has worked hard to bring a return to those standards, and it is clearly working. Calling all Cabernet fans! Start with the fact that 1997 was a legendary vintage in Italy; add to that, a lot containing 3 Barolos, a Vine Nobile di Montepluciano, and 2 IGT wines; and, the result is very impressive collection of Northern Italian wine. In the order listed in the heading, Wine Spectator awarded the following scores: 96, 95, 91, 98, 95, and 96 – for an average score of just over 95 points a bottle! Now, we could talk about each of the bottles, but you surely get the idea. Every one of these bottles is mature and ready to drink. None should be past peak maturity yet. A couple of quotes from the reviews that are indicative of all for this lot. “A fabulous finish that lasts for minutes.” – Frescobali. “Spellbinding. Huge.” – Domencio Clerico. “Full-‐bodied, with gorgeous fruit and wonderfully silky tannins. Complex and flavorful on the finish.” – Grasso. All of the ratings are from a retrospective done in 2007, when the vintage was a decade old. Thanks, Peggy and Jerry for a masterful collection of great Italian reds from a magnificent vintage. A few more years of university led to graduation and eventually a job at Robert Mondavi Winery in 1997 as a temporary harvest worker. Deciding that if he was going to work this hard, it would eventually have to be for himself, so in 1998 he founded Orin Swift Cellars. Since then David’s winery has been turning out some of the most creative and exciting new wines on the market. Wine Spectator normally rates the whites around 89 – 91 points and the reds in the 90 – 93 points. Of these, the 2009 Mercury Head gathered 93 points, the Mannequin 89 points and the Veladora 91 points. This is great party wine – and it should be at your next party! The Remirez de Ganuza Reserva received 93 points from both Parker and Tanzer – it is a Tempranillo blend with 10% Graciano. And finally, the Numanthia – Termanthia is unrated, but don’t let it fool you. It is at least as good as the others. Is made of 100% Tinta del Toro – aka Tempranillo. Your dentist will love you. However, it is the diversity of grape varietals and the abundance of them that really make the Cali wine scene what it is. Zinfandel is the sole of red varietals. Nowhere else in the world will you find the diversity of Zins and the pure celebrations of the wines that comes from this wonderful grape. We could tell you the ratings of the bottles that have ratings in this lot all come in with scores in the 90s. You know about the Martinelli and the Ridge. Nickel & Nickel is more noted for its Cabs, but they make a mean Zinfandel, too. Seghesio consistently makes excellent Zins that are reasonably priced. And, while Williams Selyem is more recognized for their Pinots, they make an elegant Zinfandel, as well. If you like Zinfandel, this diverse lot is tailor-‐made for you. If you aren’t familiar with them, this is a grand opportunity to learn. Donor: Sunspot Restaurant SILENT LOT 335 One magnum (1.5L) of Saint Helena Estate 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon “Sympa” Reserve plus a private tour and tasting with charcuterie for six persons
Nathan Pratt saw the magic on this plot of land when settlers first reached St. Helena in the mid-‐19th century. Luther Burbank saw the potential in this estate and helped Mr. Pratt plant a variety of apple, prune and walnut trees, which became cash crops during prohibition. Today, Saint Helena Winery is one of Napa Valley's premium winery estates quietly nestled in the St. Helena viticultural area. Napa Valley is renowned for incredible Cabernet Sauvignons, and this estate honors that tradition with 12 acres planted to this grape variety. The 2008 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon “Sympa” Reserve is comprised of 99% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Petit Verdot. The Sympa is a weighty, muscular and complex Cabernet Sauvignon with an earthy nose and a palate that reveals a melange of currants, blueberry, baker’s cocoa and cherry. Ends with well-‐defined grippy tannins. This is classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon built in a massive style. It is searching for a huge steak dinner to enhance. In addition, you and five others receive the opportunity to tour this historic estate and sample other wonderful Cabernets paired with charcuterie. It’s an opportunity you can’t pass up. Donor: Saint Helena Winery SILENT LOT 336 Three (750ml) bottles of Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port. One each from the 1963, 1977, and 1985 vintages Taylor, sometimes known as Taylor Fladgate, is one of several Port house owned by two old Port wine families – the Yeatmans and the Fladgates. Robert Parker has made the following statement about Taylor: Parker: “This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. Their tawnys are also among the very best.” Are you interested yet? Wine Spectator gave these three bottles 97, 97, and 93 points respectively. Writing for Wine Spectator, James Suckling referred to the 1977 and said that it would improve for decades to come why wait? The fact is that all three bottles are mature and ready drink. Take Mr. Suckling’s advice! Donor: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Heller SILENT LOT 337 Two (750m) bottles of Boyd Family Vineyards 2011 Limited Edition Serendipity Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina Knoxvillians Randy and Jenny fell in love with Mendoza, Argentina a few years ago. He went down to climb Mount Aconcagua. He later took Jenny back with him and they toured the Mendoza wine country extensively. Ultimately, they purchased a small winery there. They visit Mendoza as often as they can. Randy and Jenny have a wide range of interests – work, music, running, and sports. Wine has become one of the many things that keeps life interesting for them. The Boyds own 5 acres of Malbec and Tempranillo. They make about 1200 bottles of Malbec, 300 bottles of Tempranillo, and 600 bottles of Malbec/Tempranillo blend. He also bought an additional five acres in 2011 and planted Pinot Noir. Obviously the focus is on small case lot production. Malbec traces its origins back to the Bordeaux region of France. Because the vines are at high altitude and the soil is rocky, the vines have to struggle to make the grapes – often a good thing for the wine. Information on the wine is scarce. We believe that only about 20 cases of the wine is made – thus the name. Malbec is more or less the national grape of Argentina. This is a truly unique lot of bottles. Since they come from the Boyd’s private vineyard, they really aren’t for sale except in Knoxville at charity auction events such as L’Amour du Vin. Now is your opportunity to explore the world of the Boyd’s fascinating private wine. If you haven’t been to Vineyard 29, you need to buy this lot and find out what the rave reviews are all about. If you have already been, we know you will be bidding on this one so you can go back. 6Donor: Vineyard 29 SILENT LOT 339 One double magnum (3L) of Caymus 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection This is a special lot from special people. For the past two years, Karen Gilbertson was the Chair of L’Amour du Vin; and, she has been heavily involved again this year. In addition, we have benefited enormously from the donations and the help from Bob and Karen plus the staff at Bob’s Wine & Liquor. We appreciate everything you have done for us! Salut! Caymus is the flagship wine of the Wagner Family of wines. Charles F. Wagner asked his son, Charles J. (Chuck) Wagner to join him in starting a winery in Napa in 1971. The first vintage produced was 1992, and the rest is storied history. The winery remains 100%
family-‐owned, which explains the consistency in quality and style Caymus has demonstrated over the years. Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection became an early cult wine and it remains a sought-‐after trophy each and every vintage. That is especially true when it comes in a large format bottle like this double magnum. Like the wine, consistency with high ratings is also the norm. Parker rated this beauty 98 points: “(It) exhibits an opaque purple color, slightly more toasty oak in the aromatics, and explosive richness on the attack, mid-‐palate and length. Extraordinary purity of fruit, creme de cassis, licorice and incense all emerge from this full-‐bodied, iconic classic. It can be enjoyed now and over the next 25+ years.” We seriously doubt anyone can wait 25 years to tuck into this superb wine! Michelle Wine Estates SILENT LOT 341 Two magnums (1.5L) of 2010 Diamond Creek Sauvignon Napa Valley. Gravelly Meadow and 2010 Red Rock Terrace Diamond Creek was California’s first exclusively Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Vineyard. It was established in 1968 by Al Brounstein, a visionary who defied modern conventions and planted Bordeaux varietals on secluded Diamond Mountain in the Napa Valley, thus creating one of the first California cult wines. Sadly, he died in 2006; however, his wife, Boots, has carried the tradition forward and the wine is still very good. There are three microclimates for Diamond Creek, or if you prefer, vineyards. Robert Parker rated the 2010 Gravelly Meadow 92+ points. But, the Red Rock Terrace was rated 95+ points! Parker wrote the following regarding Diamond Creek in general: “Definitely on the comeback trail, this iconic winery, which is celebrating 40+ years in Napa Valley, has a resume that includes some of the greatest wines made in Napa during its heyday in the 1970s (the 1974, 1976s and 1978s).” The Red Rock Terrace comes from a 7-‐acre plot. Parker predicts that the wine won’t quit evolving to maturity until 2020 and will last until 2050! This is the Diamond Creek we all used to know and love! Buy this lot. Open the bottle at noon and drink it tonight for dinner. We aren’t kidding! Two superb bottles from Diamond Creek. Napa Valley Cabernet the old way – backward and slow – but WOW what a deal! Big bottles of stupendous Cab! Donor: Ashe's Wine and Spirits SILENT LOT 341 One (750ml) bottle of Château Mouton-‐Rothschild 1986 Pauilac Premier Grand Cru Classé Château Mouton-‐Rothschild is a wine estate located in the village of Pauillac 50 km (30 mi) northwest of the city of Bordeaux, France. Its eponymous red wine is regarded as one of the world's greatest clarets. It was the first estate to begin complete château bottling of the harvest. The Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855 was based entirely on recent market prices for a vineyard's wines, with one exception: Château Mouton Rothschild. Despite the market prices for their vineyard's wines equalling that of Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild was excluded from First Great Growth status, an act that Baron Philippe de Rothschild referred to as "the monstrous injustice". It is widely believed that the exception was made because the vineyard had recently been purchased by an Englishman and was no longer in French ownership. In 1973, Mouton was elevated to "first growth" status after decades of intense lobbying by its powerful and influential owner, the only change in the original 1855 classification. The 1990 vintage received 100 points from Robert Parker: “In 1986, Mouton-‐Rothschild produced the most profound wine of a great northern Medoc vintage. The sensational opaque black/ruby color may be even denser than that of the 1982. The wine possesses incredible concentration, full body, fabulous length, and is -‐ well -‐ perfect.” He projected that this wine would reach peak maturity in 2011 and remain there until at least 2095! We assure you, if you purchase this lot, it ain’t gonna last that long! We applaud Lisa and David for their patience on the wine and their willingness to share with their friends. SILENT LOT 343 A twelve (750ml) bottle four year vertical of Pride Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon Napa-‐Sonoma Counties. Three each: (2005 – 2008) The history of Pride Mountain Vineyards and L’Amour du Vin is told elsewhere in these notes. And, we have mentioned that Pride Mountain is best known for the tremendous Cabernet Sauvignons and the Clarets they produce. These vintages were produced during the transition between storied Robert Foley and Sally Johnston. The 2005 was near the beginning of the transition and the 2008 is the first vintage in which Sally had complete control over the production. The Parker ratings are very consistent – 92, 90, 92, and 91 respectively. This wine is known for flavors of chocolate, creme de cassis, espresso and spicy toast. Imagine how you could put this great vertical to work for you. We see grilled filet, strip steak and prime rib in your future, to name just a few. This is a great vertical. One Each: 2005 – 2007 On graduating from college at University of Southern California, Don Stephens moved from Sacramento where he had grown up to San Francisco to attend Hastings Law School. To pay for his education he and some partners started a restaurant on Union Street – a steak house named “The Cooperage.” The attraction of good red wine, and particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, combined with a steak, gave him the long-‐term goal of becoming a vintner and making great wines. Trish, an interior designer and gourmet cook, prides herself on her entertaining, a key element of which, in San Francisco, is wine selection. When she and Don met in 1994 one of their joint interests was to someday create a world-‐class wine. In 1996 Don and Trish found Oz II, their 35-‐acre property on Howell Mountain Road in the Saint Helena area of the Napa Valley, and an opportunity became available to attain their dream. Don and Trish planted the nine-‐acre Moose Valley Vineyard in 1996 and had their first release of their 1999 D.R. Stephens Estate Moose Valley Cabernet Sauvignon in 2002. Needless to say, the wine was extremely well-‐received. Parker rated the vintages in this vertical with 90, 90, and 91 points. It remains one of the staunchly traditional estates in Barolo. For its first half-‐century, Monfortino was made from grapes selected from individual growers in the Monforte d'Alba and Serralunga d'Alba regions. That changed in 1974, when Giacomo's son Giovanni purchased the 35-‐acre Cascina Francia property in Serralunga. Today, Giovanni's son Roberto makes the wines from Cascina Francia in much the same way his father did. Three wines are produced from the vineyard, including this magnificent Barolo Riserva Monfortino. Antonio Galloni, writing for Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate has rated this wine on three different occasions – all with the same result. He awarded the wine 97 points. From July 2005: “The 1982 Monfortino offers a captivating nose of roses, sweet fruit and truffles you could spend an entire day immersed in. The wine explodes onto the palate offering a kaleidoscope of ripe fruit, mineral, menthol and leather flavors on a medium bodied, yet structured frame with superb length and an eternal finish.” From July 2006: “Another stunning Monfortino, the 1982 displays a nose that is surreal in its detail, showing a deep, balsamic quality with slightly more mature tones. It comes across as youthful on the palate, with suggestions of leather, spices, cocoa and sweet dark fruit on a big, structured frame of extraordinary balance.” Finally, the entirey of his May 2008 review: “Conterno's 1982 Barolo Riserva Monfortino was simply beautiful in the way its perfumed aromatics and linear fruit unfolded on the palate with sublime grace.” This wine will remain at peak plateau at least through this decade. You don’t run across many 30+ year old Barolos like this one. It needs to be in your cellar or on your table! Parker rated the 2010 Signature Cabernet Sauvignon 90 points: “(It) is the deepest, richest, fullest wine. It displays lots of creme de cassis, smoke and meaty characteristics in its pure, beautifully textured, long personality. “ He describes it as a 10 to 15 year wine. A visit to Darioush is a unique experience; you need to go! A tour and tasting at the winery is a unique experience. Virtually all of their wines receive ratings in the 90s from Parker and Wine Spectator. You simply will be hard-‐pressed to spend a better afternoon in Napa.
