SCALANCE – scalable performance

Totally Integrated Automation from Siemens demonstrates in a host of successful applications around the world the extent to which integrated solutions can be created today with shared tools and standardized mechanisms. Selective further development of industrial communication with SIMATIC NET is linked with this at a fundamental level.

A pioneering milestone in this development is SCALANCE, the generation of active network components for establishing integrated networks. These active network components are optimally coordinated with each other. They have been designed for harsh industrial environments and enable integrated, flexible and secure setup of a high-performance network.

Industrial Ethernet switching components The communication network is of the utmost importance for automation solutions. With SIMATIC NET, Siemens offers Industrial Ethernet switching components for structuring networked machines and plants, and for integrating into the overall corporate network. A graded portfolio of switches (SCALANCE X) and communications processors with integral switch enables optimum solutions for all types of switching tasks, and not only in harsh industrial environments.

Industrial Wireless LAN (IWLAN) Thanks to wireless communication with programmable controllers, even greater flexibility is achieved, maintenance work is simplified, and service and standstill times reduced. The IWLAN solution from Siemens Industry makes these advantages available through a coordinated portfolio of WLAN equipment for industrial use, even for fail-safe communication in the context of operator and machine safety. This includes IWLAN access points and client modules (SCALANCE W), wireless interfaces for PROFIBUS and distributed I/O, mobile operator panels, planning software, and extensive accessories.

Industrial Ethernet Security By integrating into the corporate network, the increased wired and wireless networking of industrial plants enables a degree of integration and openness that provides many benefits such as remote access to plant sections over the Internet. However, this also results in certain risks with regard to data security. With its industrial security concept, SIMATIC NET offers a safety solution that is specially designed for industrial automation engineering and that satisfies the specific requirements of this application environment. The security modules (SCALANCE S) and software are easy to handle, and reaction-free integration into existing networking concepts is possible.

Industrial Wireless LAN from Siemens Reliable, rugged, and secure The key to market success lies in the provision and availability of information, no matter when or where you need it. Thanks to the use of mobile devices linked via wireless data networks (e.g. wireless LAN), the efficiency of processes can be significantly improved. The primary benefit of wireless solutions is the simple and flexible availability of mobile or hard to access stations. Mobile communication increases a company's competitiveness, as it helps achieve greater flexibility through the use of wireless communication to automation devices and industrial terminal devices. As a result you can simplify maintenance work, reduce service costs and downtimes and deploy your personnel optimally.

Part of TIA Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) provides a complete range of products and systems for automation in all sectors of industry – from incoming goods through the production process to the delivery of goods, and through all levels, from the field level to production management right up to company management. The tools access a common database. This saves input costs and ensures project-wide consistency.

Possible applications ■

The WLAN IEEE 802.11 standard does not have the necessary specifications for use in an industrial environment. SIMATIC NET made several enhancements to radio products in accordance with the requirements of automation, thus creating the Industrial Wireless LAN (IWLAN).

Automated guided vehicle systems (AGV) and overhead monorail conveyors; prevents wear and offers high flexibility for traffic routing thanks to the wireless transfer of data to the vehicles

Industrial Mobile Communication stands for wireless communication in industry. It is based on international standards, such as IEEE 802.11 at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, and data transfer rates of up to 54 Mbit/s.

Cranes; high flexibility through access to data communication with the moving unit independent of the location

Wireless access to field devices for configuration and testing without costly adaptation of the control cabinet

Communication with moving nodes (e.g. mobile controls and devices), storage and retrieval machines, conveyor systems, conveyor belts, rotating machines, trucks

Wireless linking of communication segments for rapid commissioning or for cost-effective networking, where otherwise the installation of cables would result in considerable costs (e.g. public highways, rivers, lakes, railways)

Water supply and waste-water disposal; monitors and controls water catchment, pumping stations and water treatment plants, for example, via GPRS, mobile phone and the Internet

The integration of wireless communication in industry is opening up a wide range of opportunities previously not available with a wired solution: Demanding applications, such as those with strict real-time requirements, were until recently considered a no-go area for radio technology. The use of radio on dynamic machines saves cabling materials and maintenance costs, automated guided vehicle systems can obtain data without the need for cables and the choice of route is not restricted.

IWLAN applications Harbor plant / Container logistics Task specification

Solution

• A rugged radio system should be installed for outdoor use in a container handling system at the port of Hamburg. With this solution, containers should be loaded and unloaded via IWLAN using automated guided vehicle systems (AGVS). Both the driving area and the lanes between the storage blocks should be inspected reliably and economically, the system should be expandable and be insensitive to interference even as the number of vehicles rises. • The system should be reliable and work together with other networks that are already in place, as the changeover to the new system can only take place step by step. • Solid, expert support should be provided by the manufacturer during implementation and installation.

• For the inspection of the driving area and lanes in-between, 11 SCALANCE W786-1PRO access points are used to operate 54 automated guided vehicle systems (AGV), guaranteeing optimum coverage of the radio area involved. The access points with IP65 degree of protection are resistant to salt spray and designed for operation at temperatures ranging from -40 °C to +70 °C. They therefore ensure reliable operation in the outdoor area of a harbor plant . • The SCALANCE W744-1 client modules with ANT795-6MN antenna are used in the automated guided vehicle systems to ensure compact integration. • The radio network is based on the IEEE 802.11 standard and is therefore reliable and free from interference. The roaming function enables the automated guided vehicle systems to move freely within the radio field. • Coordination with existing networks was already taken into consideration during advance planning, and successfully put into practice. • Under consideration of the existing infrastructure, a new, more powerful antenna was installed on the vehicles, ensuring that the connection is not interrupted when containers of various sizes are used.

Benefits • The radio network's excellent method of operation and IEEE 802.11b (11Mbit/s) radio standard ensure interference-free operation • Savings in costs, as the existing infrastructure (masts and antennas) could be retained • Targeted on-site support during implementation and commissioning • Expandable radio network for further investments in the future

IWLAN and SINAUT applications Water supply Task specification

Solution

• The entire water supply for a community should be monitored and controlled in one integrated system. To this aim, wells and pumping stations for the water catchment must be networked, and water treatment plants, pumping stations and elevated storage reservoirs for the water supply must be integrated in the system. • The entire system should be monitored and controlled from a central waterworks that acts as the control center.

• All process stations are controlled locally by a SIMATIC S7-200. • WLAN is used to connect the well stations and elevated storage reservoirs directly to WinCC or WinCC flexible in the main control center (a line-of-sight connection over an uninhabited area permits longer distances to be covered) • More remote stations can be reached via GPRS. The SINAUT MD720-3 modem is linked to a SIMATIC S7-200 via a serial interface and fitted with a GSM antenna. • The SINAUT MICRO SC program package manages the connection of the S7-200 stations linked via GPRS and is connected to the control and observation system via OPC. • Operating personnel can directly intervene in the process, for example to switch pumps on/off or actuate valves, using control commands and by inputting set points. • The optional "Alarm Control Center Micro Edition" OPC client allows contingency personnel to be informed by text message if parameters are exceeded. If an employee cannot be reached, a different employee is automatically notified, until the system receives a call back from the service personnel.
