Shabbat

Service Schedule: January

On the High Holy Days I spoke about it, and now it’s time. Beginning this month we have the opportunity to influence the soul of Israel. How so? By voting for the ARZA slate, representing Reform Judaism in the January 2 - 7:30 pm upcoming World Zioinist Congress elections, which begins on January 15, Shabbat with Birthday Blessings 2015 and continues through April 30, 2015.

January 3 - 9:00 am

How does our vote for ARZA (the Association of Reform Zionists of Shabbat Minyan America) in the World Zionist Congress affect Israel’s soul? ARZA supports religious equality, gender equality and peace and security in Israel. A vote for ARZA is a vote for these val- January 9 - 7:30 pm ues. Family Shabbat One reason to vote for ARZA is that through the World Zionist Congress, the Reform movement’s institutions and movement organizations in Israel receive important funding. Over the January 10 - 9:00 am next five years about $20 million will be distributed to the Israel Movement for Progressive Shabbat Minyan Judaism. In addition to funding that our organizations in Israel receive, a second important reason to vote the ARZA slate is that based on our number of representatives from the number of votes, we are able to place key people in the national organizations. One such place where we already stand in a good position is in the Jewish National Fund (JNF), where Menachem Leibovich is the #3 man. This gives us a huge say in how funding from the Israeli government will get used to purchase land in Israel. When Mencahem Leibovich acts, it’s in accordance with the movement and values that helped put him in this position.

January 16 - 7:30 pm Prayer Study Shabbat with Anniversary Blessings and Aufruf of Corey Derdiger and Rebecca Landis January 17 - 9:00 am

Shabbat Minyan

A third benefit we get is political influence. In past elections we’ve formed coalitions with political parties such as Labor and Meretz. With a coalition, we have strength in numbers in January 23 - 7:30 pm the World Zionist Organization, but we also have an influence when these same parties make Ru’ach Shabbat with decisions in the Knesset. Electric Shabbat The World Zionist Congress is comprised of delegates from all over the world from all walks January 24 - 9:00 am of Jewish/Zionist life. The United States has 145 seats, and in the past ARZA has had 56 of Shabbat Minyan those seats. This year our goal is to get 50% of these American seats. The only thing stopping us is apathy. We need to educate ourselves and our Jewish friends and neighbors and get out January 30 - 6:00 pm (note time) the vote.

Erev Shabbat with Kol Simcha In order to vote, you need to be Jewish, 18 years of age and older. First you need to register Choir followed by Potluck ($5 for 18-30 year olds, $10 for those over 30). You can register right before you vote (which Dinner opens January 15) by going to www.ReformJews4Israel.org and following the links for voting. This website also has a lot more information explaining the importance of how and why our January 31 - 9:00 am vote is so important. Shabbat Minyan

A successful election in which ARZA receives a significant majority of votes and therefore February Service Schedule delegates to the World Zionist Congress, is the single most effective way for the Reform on page 2. movement to influence policy and shape the soul of Israel.

L’shalom,

President’s Message By: Sharon Kessler Whether we like it or not, winter is upon us. I hope everyone enjoyed the eight days of Chanukah and celebrated the new year of 2015. During these short days and long nights, there are still many activities at TJM to keep you busy. I look forward to seeing you at a Friday evening Shabbat service or at an adult education class on Sunday morning. There is also our fabulous Book Club that meets the third Wednesday of each month, even throughout the winter. We can look forward to another family bowling event in January. Last year, nearly all our school families attended. Mark your calendar and plan to be at Classic Bowl with us on January 25. Also back by popular demand is our Hamantashen baking. We get together and bake dozens of cookies for our Purim celebration. Join us in the kitchen on February 26. Bakers of all ages are welcome to attend. Of course, in order to provide all the wonderful programs, classes and services at TJM, we need your help. If you have not yet made your donation to the High Holy Day appeal, it is not too late. It is never too late to help us continue to support our temple. The Generation Next fundraiser and the Founders 2020 campaign that we started last year will be combined into one fundraiser for this year. We will need your help to make it a success. You will receive an appeal letter in the mail in the coming weeks. Please be as generous as possible. We look forward to 100% participation from our members in this fundraising campaign. No donation is too small. Temple Judea Mizpah needs all of us to do our share to ensure our continuity and reach our 120th birthday. Happy new year 2015,

Note ♪ from the Cantor By: Cantor Richard Bessman Hi TJM Membership. Sometimes one part of our congregation doesn’t know what great things another part is doing. I would like to share with you a letter that went out to school families from Noel Sucherman and the Education Commission encouraging attendance at our Family Shabbat services: Warm greetings from the Education Commission! Based on feedback from TJM families, last year the Education Commission implemented a one-day Religious School. There have been many advantages to our new format and overall the change has been very positive. In going to this once a week format, however, our children have fewer opportunities to learn and practice the religious aspects of Jewish life and our students have fewer opportunities to spend time together as part of a chavurah or community of friends. To address this missing piece, the Education Commission requests your participation in our Family Services, which are held on the second Friday of every month. Each month the students will work alongside adult buddies as greeters, ushers, oneg servers and service participants. These jobs will rotate each month. We encourage all families to join us for services as often as possible. We know that our Family Services will be even more meaningful as our students enjoy the honor of working together, interacting with other temple members and participating in these services. This is an example of how our Education Commission (along with the Worship Commission) is working hard to make sure that everyone feels welcomed and appreciated. Be sure to say hello to these newer greeters, ushers, oneg servers and service participants. I look forward to seeing you on the first Friday of the month for Shabbat services with birthday blessings, and the second Friday of the month for Family Shabbat services (described above), and the third Friday of the month for Shabbat services with anniversary blessings, and the fourth Friday of the month for Ru’ach Shabbat, and for the sometimes fifth Friday—which often is an early service followed by potluck dinner. Whichever service you attend, I am sure you will find it meaningful. 2015 looks like it will be an exciting year at Temple Judea Mizpah. Have a safe and happy new year, Cantor Bessman _______________________________________________________________________________________

Todah Rabbah to June and Al Gordon and Sharon and David Kessler for their donations enabling us to purchase new siddurim (prayer books) for the Middle School students in

our Religious School. Following discussions with the clergy and the Worship Commission, it was clear that the Gates of Prayer for Young People was too elementary and the Mishkan T'filah was too advanced for these students. The new siddur (prayer book), Mishkan T'filah for Youth, will be a welcome and exciting addition to our Sunday morning worship services, which we will begin using in January. Right now we have only enough siddurim for our religious school students, but it is the hope that with further donations, we will be able to use these prayer books at our monthly Family Shabbat Services. If you are interested in donating new Mishkan T'filah for Youth to our congregation, please contact Rabbi Memis-Foler.

It is our pleasure to invite all of our temple family to join us as we celebrate the simcha of our daughter

Madelaine Joy becoming a Bat Mitzvah on Shabbat Yitro at Shabbat Services Friday, February 6, 2015 7:30 pm Temple Judea Mizpah 8610 Niles Center Road Skokie, Illinois Oneg Shabbat following services Please RSVP to the temple office by January 14, 2015 [email protected] or 847.676.1566

Madelaine Foler will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Shabbat Yitro. Celebrating this milestone with her are her proud parents Rabbi Amy Memis-Foler and Dave Foler and her grandparents Myra & Irving Memis and Judy Foler. Maddy is a 7th grade student at Fairview South School in Skokie. She enjoys theater, singing, reading, volleyball, hanging out with friends, and going to summer camp at OSRUI. For her Bat Mitzvah project, she served dinners at A Just Harvest Soup Kitchen, tutored students at Fairview South School, and is collecting and donating books for Bernie's Book Bank, whose mission it is to significantly increase book ownership among at-risk infants, toddlers and school-age children throughout Chicagoland. One thing Maddy learned from her Jewish education is "how to chant the Torah and Haftarah tropes, which I can use throughout my whole Jewish life."

Religion and Social Action Message By: Helayne Levin George Washington Carver (U.S. agricultural chemist, c. 1860-1943) said: “How far you go in life depends on you being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and the strong. Because someday in life you will have been all of these.” Did you ever look at your life and wonder where it has gone, where you have been and what you have done? Did you know that in some way, every step you take can help another person? Here are some examples. TJM just completed its involvement with the ARK Chanukah Gift Wishes program. 30 of our families purchased gifts for 42 individuals to provide them with a warm and wonderful Chanukah. Madelyn Silverstein asked her family and friends to help us fill our pantry for her Bat Mitzvah project. We delivered an entire car full of food to the Niles Township Food Pantry and filled our own pantry with items to use in serving dinner at A Just Harvest. Did you know that Dora and Joanna Starr-Poulos collected and delivered toiletries to shelters? Did you know that many grocery stores have BOGO sales? Buy One Get One… the opportunity to buy one can of vegetables and get another free. Did you know the pantry or soup kitchen would be happy to take that free can? Did you know that in November we hosted a program on the immigration issues in this country and in Chicago? Did you know that children who flee their country and come here are often released from detention centers in the middle of winter with only the clothes on their backs? Do you know how far your child’s gently used winter coat can go for someone in need? Did you know that every 2 months we choose another tzedakah recipient for the money that is dropped into the box in the temple lobby? Did you know there is a box in the lobby? This next two month cycle the money will go to Doctor’s Without Borders, a group that is intimately involved with treating Ebola all over the world. Many lives are saved with the money we donate. Did you know that American Jewish World Service presented a very touching program on December 11 at University of Illinois Conference Center on the topic of Child Marriage? Did you know that in India, female children are married off as young as 11 years old? Did you know that childbirth in these countries is the number one cause of death to children? Think about that one. As we move forward into 2015, let us live healthy and happy lives. Let our children thrive so some day, they can be thriving older adults. Let us set an example as to what they can do to help others so there is no question in their minds what is possible. Let us remember those we have lost these past few months who believed in giving to others as a way of life, Gil Gavlin, Bert Alport, Bill Plotkin, Howard Friedman, Peter Gershanov and Toby Lipton. And may we have the desire and ability to continue to share our good fortune, no matter how big or how small, with others in need. Just to add a little humor? Here is an African Proverb: “If you think you are too small to make a difference… spend a night with a mosquito.”

The Art Forger

By: Barbara Shapiro In the early morning hours of March 18, 1990, two men dressed as police officers bound and gagged two guards at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts, and stole thirteen works of art worth today over $500 million. Despite thousands of hours of police work and a $5 million reward, the artwork has never been recovered. Claire Roth, a struggling young artist, is about to discover that there's more to this crime than meets the eye.
