Book Morsels By Etta Donnell Once you get past the reprehensible, crass parts in the novel Here I Am you will uncover a work of genius … albeit one that runs a li le off the rails. S ll, and even with all its flaws, the much an cipated novel is a powerful magnet for fans of wunderkind, author Jonathan Safran Foer. His followers eagerly an cipated another rollicking spoof such as in Everything is Illuminated or, a hear elt story that evoked pathos and empathy for nine year old Oskar Schell searching for his father missing in 9/11 in Foer’s second novel, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close . Readers waited ten years to read Foer’s new work ex‐ pec ng the same intensity of language, whimsy, playful puns and enlightenment. Foer delivers, but only in part. Here I Am follows two thema c strands both occurring within a four week period. The one is the dissolu on of a marriage. The other the (almost) disassembling of Israel. The tle of the novel is taken from the biblical Genesis. Abraham hears the voice of his son, Isaac, whom he is about to kill and answers “hineni”, here I am, assuring Isaac of parental protec on. But G‐d also beckons. Abraham faithfully responds “hineni” here I am, affirming his faith willing to sacrifice his only son. These polar responses are difficult to reconcile. Foer grapples with a simi‐ lar dilemma in the characters of Julia and Jacob Bloch, their three sons, several members of the “mishpacha” 5
and Argus the family dog. Jacob, a TV writer sees that his family disinte‐ gra ng before his eyes. His wife has discovered a secret phone with salacious messages that Jacob has sent to one of his coworkers. His son Sam wants nothing to do with the synagogue nor his bar mitzvah which his parents force him to have although neither Jacob nor Julia are prac cing Jews. Sam lives in ‘Other World ‘an electronic game into which he escapes. Everyone seems to be disconnected, struggling to solidify an ambigu‐ ous iden ty: grandfather Irv a, loudmouthed ran ng discontent, great grandfather Isaac, de‐ ba ng whether to kill himself or move to Israel and Argus the incon nent family dog who badly needs to “be put down.” The one thing that binds the family is the nostalgia of “home.” But what is home? And where? When cousin Tamir and his son arrive from Israel, for a visit to the USA Jacob begins to recognize the dis nc on between the values of the American Jews and the Israeli Jews, the primal differences between home and homeland. Where does Jacob’s allegiance lie? When a sudden earthquake hits Israel Jacob is compelled to choose. Here I Am is certainly not “vintage” Foer. It is more terse, more sober. Here I Am, however is Foer’s original voice, its discord, clam‐ or and apathy, perhaps reflected in the divergent voices of Jewish America’s “next genera on.”
