Service for the Lord’s Day

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP CHIMES GREETING The Lord be with you. And also with you. PRELUDE

Soli Deo Gloria

†CALL TO WORSHIP Surprising God, in these summer months, open our eyes to your presence throughout all creation. Help us to recognize your image in every person we meet. Let us relinquish our fears about the cost of discipleship. Let us experience the joy of costly grace. Come, let us worship God! †HYMN

†PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious God, who meets us in the storm. The thunder cracks within the bones. At times we are shaken, act in haste, and are driven to despair. Sometimes we cannot see the ones who can help us, the hand of One who heals. Forgive us, Merciful God. Let the echoes of your command sink into our bones, “Peace, be still.” Chart out our course once again to places and people yet unknown. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. (Silent Prayer) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. †DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS Friends, believe the good news. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. †R

†AFFIRMATION OF FAITH adapted from A Declaration of Faith We hold that what God says to us and does for us centers in Jesus Christ our living Lord as he is remembered, known, and expected. In Christ, God’s Word of acceptance takes flesh: by grace through faith we are set right with God, adopted as children of God, not because of anything we have done, but because of what Christ has done. In Christ, God’s Word of demand is lived out: to love God and neighbor as he did is what God requires of us. The Spirit adds no different Word from God, but leads us deeper into the truth of God uttered in Jesus Christ. From the depths of this truth, we aspire to live holy and joyful lives to the glory of God. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. OFFERING OFFERTORY

HYMN 463

How Firm a Foundation

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in God’s excellent Word! What more can be said than to you God hath said, to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled? “Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, for I am thy God, and will still give thee aid; I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.” “When through the deep waters I call thee to go, the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow; for I will be near thee, thy troubles to bless, and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.” “When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, my grace, all sufficient, shall by thy supply; the flame shall not hurt thee; I only design thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.” “The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose, I will not, I will not desert to its foes; that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I’ll never, no, never, no, never forsake.” HYMN 159

O Sing a Song of Bethlehem O sing a song of Bethlehem, of shepherds watching there, and of the news that came to them from angels in the air. The light that shone on Bethlehem fills all the world today. Of Jesus’ birth and peace on earth the angels sing alway. O sing a song of Nazareth, of sunny days of joy; O sing of fragrant flowers’ breath, and of the sinless boy. For now the flowers of Nazareth in every heart may grow. Now spreads the fame of his dear name on all the winds that blow. O sing a song of Galilee, of lake and woods and hill, of him who walked upon the sea and bade its waves be still. For though, like waves on Galilee, dark seas of trouble roll, When faith has heard the Master’s word, falls peace upon the soul. O sing a song of Calvary, its glory and dismay, of him who hung upon a tree, and took our sins away. For he who died on Calvary is risen from the grave, and Christ, our Lord, by heaven adored, is mighty now to save.
