The Lord’s Day January 8, 2017

Reflection The problem with life is not that it’s a tragedy, but that it’s a bore.

— H. L. Mencken

Unbelievers may know about spiritual beauty by hearsay — may even be able to make ne speeches about it ... But to the regenerate [born again,] God has given a glance ... and there breaks in upon the soul a heavenly sweetness, such a sense of the amiableness in holiness and an excellency in God and a sweet loveliness in Christ. ... He sees by a new light that was never before let into his mind. — Jonathan Edwards Polly’s heart jumped in her body when she heard it. She felt sure that it was a call, and that anyone who heard that call would want to obey it and (what’s more) would be able to obey it, however many worlds and ages lay between. — C.S. Lewis, The Magician’s Nephew We proclaim to you the eternal life which was with the Father and has appeared to us. — 1 John 1:3 Call to Worship

Isaiah 44:6-8

Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: “I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god. Who is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and set it before me, since I appointed an ancient people. Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen. Fear not, nor be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? And you are my witnesses! Is there a God besides me? There is no Rock; I know not any.” Hymn of Praise #64

All Creatures of Our God and King

St. Francis of Assisi

Invocation (followed by the Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Call to Confession

Revelation 3:3

Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. Prayer of Confession O God, whose will conquers all, there is no comfort in anything apart from enjoying you and being engaged in your service; You are our All in all, and we desire to be pleased with your will. What shall we give you for all your benefits? We long to make some return, but have nothing to offer, and can only rejoice that you do all, that none in heaven or on earth shares your honor. We confess that in our own strength, we can do nothing to glorify your blessed name. We ask that through your power and grace, you would give us humble hearts that cheerfully surrender to your will. We pray this in confidence, because we know you are the author and finisher of our faith, that the whole work of redemption is yours alone through Christ Jesus, that every good work found in us is the effect of your power and grace, and is for your glory and pleasure. We pray for this in the precious name of Jesus. Amen. Adapted from Valley of Vision: God the All Silent Confession Words of Encouragement

Isaiah 40:28-31

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Confession of Faith

From the Heidelberg Catechism

Worship Leader: What is your only comfort in life and in death? All: That I am not my own, but belong – body and soul, in life and in death – to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with His precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven. In fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to Him, Christ, by His Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for Him. Sermon

“The Promise and The Presence”

Joshua 1 Pastor Rick Searle

The Sacrament of The Lord’s Supper Communion, also called The Lord’s Supper or Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all committed followers of Jesus Christ to share in this sacrament: those who are baptized members of a congregation that proclaims the gospel, who are at peace with God and their neighbor, and who seek strength to live in a deeper communion with Jesus. If you are not a Christian, or you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the Church. Closing Hymn #88 Benediction

Fairest Lord Jesus

German Hymn

Joshua 1 1 After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' assistant, 2 “Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel. 3 Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses. 4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun shall be your territory. 5 No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you.6 Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. 7 Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” 10

And Joshua commanded the officers of the people, 11 “Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, for within three days you are to pass over this Jordan to go in to take possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.’” 12

And to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh Joshua said, “Remember the word that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, ‘The LORD your God is providing you a place of rest and will give you this land.’ 14 Your wives, your little ones, and your livestock shall remain in the land that Moses gave you beyond the Jordan, but all the men of valor among you shall pass over armed before your brothers and shall help them, 15 until the LORD gives rest to your brothers as he has to you, and they also take possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving them. Then you shall return to the land of your possession and shall possess it, the land that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise.” 13

16

And they answered Joshua, “All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. 17 Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you. Only may the LORD your God be with you, as he was with Moses! 18 Whoever rebels against your commandment and disobeys your words, whatever you command him, shall be put to death. Only be strong and courageous.”

WHAT WE BELIEVE • We believe the Bible is the written word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit and without error in the original manuscripts. The Bible is the revelation of God’s truth and is infallible and authoritative in all matters of faith and practice • We believe in the Holy Trinity. There is one God, who exists eternally in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. • We believe that all are sinners and totally unable to save themselves from God’s displeasure, except by His mercy. • We believe that salvation is by God alone as He sovereignly chooses those He will save. We believe His choice is based on His grace, not on any human individual merit, or foreseen faith. • We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, who through His perfect life and sacrificial death atoned for the sins of all who will trust in Him, alone, for salvation. • We believe that God is gracious and faithful to His people, not simply as individuals but as families in successive generations according to His Covenant promises. • We believe that the Holy Spirit indwells God’s people and gives them the strength and wisdom to trust Christ and follow Him. • We believe that Jesus will return, bodily and visibly to judge all mankind and to receive His people to Himself. • We believe that all aspects of our lives are to be lived to the glory of God under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

The Vision of Faith Presbyterian Church is To become a fellowship of believers who are experiencing the transforming power of the Gospel And are Instruments of Change in the lives of others
