WELCOME TO BETHANY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

“Enter this Church not as a stranger, but as a guest of God. May the blessings of God rest upon you, both in your coming in and your going out.” We are delighted to have you in worship. We ask that you please sign the Fellowship Pad at the end of the pew. For your convenience, we have a warm and loving nursery adjacent to the sanctuary, complete with an available paging system. We also have a Cry Room at the back of the Sanctuary (near the usher’s table) on the pulpit side with windows and a speaker so that you can see and hear the service. If you have any questions or need literature regarding the life of Bethany Presbyterian Church, please visit the Welcome Center, located next to the sanctuary. “Please remember to turn off cell phones before the beginning of worship.”

Holy and Heavenly Father: By your grace, You have invited us to follow You with every part of our lives; we have often chosen our own way. Mercifully, You have given us Your commands which lead to abundant and full life; we have often chosen disobedience that leads to apathy and ruin. You have given us the community of Your church for support and accountability; we have often chosen to hide behind fake smiles and laughter. 2

The Service of Ordination & Installation AFFIRMATION OF GIFTS There are different gifts, but it is the same Spirit who gives them. There are different ways of serving God, but it is the same Lord who is served. God works through different people in different ways, but it is the same God who achieves his purpose through them all. Each one is given a gift by the Spirit, to use it for the common good. Together we are the body of Christ, and individually members of him. Within our common ministry, some members are chosen for particular work, including the calling into Ordination as Elder or Deacon. In this service of ordination and installation we recognize these special ministries, remembering that our Lord Jesus said: Whoever among you wants to be great must become the servant of all, and whoever wants to be first among you, must be the slave of all. PRESENTATION OF THE OFFICERS Mr. Moderator, speaking for the people of the church, I bring the following persons to be ordained and installed as Elders: Joe Brickner, John (JR) Evans, Terry Kohlmyer, Lou Nowasielski, Mike Segeleon. I bring the following persons to be ordained and installed as Deacons: Melanie Bedner, Thomas Hayes, Judy Vietmeier. I bring the following persons to be installed as Elders: Ruth Doyle, Eric Gregory, Lorrie Just. I bring the following Deacons to be installed: Nikki O’Brien, Thomas Willhite, Dan Wolfe. QUESTIONS TO THE OFFICERS Do you trust in Jesus Christ your Savior, acknowledge him Lord of all and Head of the Church, and through him believe in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

8

Do you accept the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be, by the Holy Spirit, the unique and authoritative witness to Jesus Christ in the Church universal, and God’s Word to you? Do you sincerely receive and adopt the essential tenets of the Reformed faith as expressed in the confessions of our Church as authentic and reliable expositions of what Scripture leads us to believe and do, and will you be instructed and led by those confessions as you lead the people of God? Will you fulfill your office in obedience to Jesus Christ, under the authority of Scripture and be continually guided by our confessions? Will you be governed by our Church’s polity, and will you abide by its discipline? Will you be a friend among your colleagues in ministry, working with them, subject to the ordering of God’s Word and Spirit? Will you in your own life seek to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, love your neighbors, and work for the reconciliation of the world? Do you promise to further the peace, unity, and purity of the Church? Will you seek to serve the people with energy, intelligence, imagination and love? (For Elder) Will you be a faithful elder, watching over the people, providing for their worship, nurture, and service? Will you share in government and discipline, serving in governing bodies of the Church? In your ministry will you try to show the love and justice of Jesus Christ? (For Deacon) Will you be a faithful deacon, teaching charity, urging concern, and directing the people’s help to the friendless and those in need? In your ministry will you try to show the love and justice of Jesus Christ?

QUESTIONS TO THE CONGREGATION Do we, the members of the church, accept these persons as elders and deacons chosen by God through the voice of this congregation to lead us in the way of Jesus Christ? Do we agree to encourage them, to respect their decisions, and to follow as they guide us, serving Jesus Christ, who alone is Head of the Church? PRAYER Let us pray: Almighty God: in every age You have chosen servants to speak Your word and lead Your people. We thank You for these men and women whom You have called to serve You. Give them special gifts to do their special work: and fill them with the Holy Spirit, so they may have the same mind that was in Christ Jesus and be faithful disciples as long as they shall live. CONGREGATION God of grace, who called us to a common ministry as ambassadors of Christ, trusting us with the message of grace and peace: give us courage and discipline to follow where Your servants rightly lead us, that together we may declare Your wonderful deeds and show Your love to the world. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord of all. CHARGE TO THE ELDERS/DEACONS You are now elders/deacons in the church and for this congregation. Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Amen. BLESSING TO THE ELDERS AND DEACONS God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us. Glory to God in the church! Glory to God in the Messiah, in Jesus! Glory down all the generations! Glory through all millennia! Oh, yes! Ephesians 3:20-21 The Message 10

Through Your Son, You have shown and taught us what it means to truly love; we have often chosen to live safely and selfishly. Lord, forgive us our lives of sin and may we receive your grace as we confess in silence…
