them. She is looking forward to conducting the grant at ETSU. Flo is excited to be a part of ETSU College of Nursing and is looking forward to learning about the tricity area. She is also excited to be close to the Great Smoky Mountains and Asheville, NC. Prior to her move to Nebraska, she wanted to go to Asheville and the Biltmore but never had the chance. It is now close to the top of her “to do” list. Flo has varied interests and is looking forward to developing routines which involve walking Henry, swimming laps and getting involved with the Jonesborough community.

The College of Nursing also wishes to welcome Dr. Helene Holbrook to the Graduate Program. Helene began her nursing education at Maria College in Albany, NY where she earned an AAS in nursing. From there she earned a certificate from Albany Medical College in the Family Nursing Practitioner Certificate Program in 1976. Then in 2004 she earned a BSN from University of Phoenix, Phoenix, AZ; a MSN from Samuel Merritt College, Oakland, CA in 2006; and a DNP from University of San Francisco, San Francisco, CA in 2010. Helene has a wide variety of nursing practice. She served as a Family Nursing Practitioner for the Contra Costa County Family Health Center, which supported a Family Practice residency teaching facility for the University of California, Davis. The NPs were primary providers in pediatrics, women’s health (OB and GYN) and assessment and management of chronic disease. Prevention and education were promoted

with interpreters in many languages and respectful of many cultural norms. She also practiced at Kaiser San Francisco, where she focused on primary care. She had a patient load of 2000 with responsibility for their health care and education. She shared responsibility for this outpatient population with a team of two other Nurse Practitioners, ten Internists, a Physical Therapist, a Diabetes Educator, a Behaviorist, and a Chronic Care Conditions Manager. In 2006-2007 she served as an Family Nursing Practitioner and was the sole primary care provider for a native Yupik Eskimo village in bush Alaska. She was responsible for managing chronic disease, OB, adult care, pediatrics, and trauma. She was the sole provider of health care in a small sub-Regional Health Center in St.

Mary's Alaska. There, she did everything from treating lacerations and setting fractures, to managing trauma patients and

stabilizing MI and Strokes until AeroMed-Evac arrived with paramedics. Helene also worked in the Dermatology Department in San Francisco where her responsibilities extended to minor procedures, biopsy of suspicious lesions, and management of chronic skin conditions. Her most recent experience is with Santa Teresa and San Francisco Kaiser Permanente Emergency/Minor Injury Department and the Minor Injury Center and ED Fast Track After Hours Medicine Clinic where her responsibilities included injury assessment and treatment, suturing, fractures, x-ray review, I&D of abscesses, general medical/surgical evaluation and treatment of family practice complaints, vaginal discharge, STD screening, pediatrics illness, adult and pediatric asthma, abdominal pain, joint pain, back pain, headache evaluation and treatment. Helene has submitted several articles for review including: “Ethical Dilemmas in Nursing Practice” to The Clinician in the Classroom; “The DNP experience of seeking guidance and experience as a novice interested in a faculty position”: published in the January 2010 Advances for Nurse Practitioners; and “Do Nurse Practitioners Practice as We Preach? Use of Open-ended Questions in Patient Centered History Taking.” On a personal note, Helen was born and raised in upstate New York, and from 1976 until now, lived in San Francisco, CA . She enjoys riding horses, gardening, and kayaking. She also owns Aussie dogs. Helene’s 23year-old daughter, Delaney is a graduate of Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC and is currently in graduate studies to become a high school teacher and wishes to secure a position in the
