History of the Ceremony The College of Nursing sponsors an annual Recognition Ceremony in Bozeman the day before graduation in May. It was first held in June 1980 as a public declaration of the College of Nursing’s pride and scholarship. It was instituted to reunite seniors from the upper division campuses and honor them as a total class graduating from the MSU College of Nursing. Graduating seniors receive their nursing pins and diploma covers in a formal academic ceremony. This event is scheduled in proximity to the overall university commencement celebration, thus enabling families and friends of the graduates to attend both ceremonies in one trip. Those honored at Recognition include seniors completing the requirements for the baccalaureate degree during the calendar year of the ceremony. They are "pinned" by their significant others and receive their diploma covers from the president and provost. Master’s degree candidates who are to graduate by August of the current academic year are also honored at the Recognition Ceremony and are hooded by their thesis/professional project chairs. The MSU President and Provost, the College of Nursing administrators, faculty and staff, alumni and honored guests are an integral part of the ceremony. The ceremony features a student speaker who has been selected by his/her peers and a guest speaker who has made a significant contribution to nursing.

Academic Regalia Academic dress (also known as academic regalia) is traditional clothing worn primarily in tertiary academic settings. Contemporarily, it is more commonly seen only at graduation ceremonies, but formerly academic dress was, and to a lesser degree in many ancient universities still is, worn on a daily basis. Today the ensemble generally consists of a gown (also known as a "robe") with a separate hood, and usually a cap (generally either a mortarboard, a tam, or a bonnet). The academic dress found in most universities in the United States is derived from that of the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, which was a development of academic and clerical dress common throughout the medieval universities of Europe, itself a development of the academic robes worn in the medieval Madrasahs of the Middle East. The practice of wearing academic regalia in the United States dates to the Colonial Colleges period, and was heavily influenced by European practices and styles. However, there was not any standardization among the meanings behind the various costumes. In 1893 an Intercollegiate Commission made up of representatives from leading institutions was created to establish an acceptable system of academic dress. The Commission met in 1895 and adopted a code of academic regalia, which prescribed the cut and style and materials of the gowns, as well as determined the colors which were to represent the different fields of learning. In 1932 and 1959 the American Council on Education (ACE) authorized the appointment of committees to determine whether revision and completion of the academic code adopted by the previous conferences and committees was desirable at this time, and, if so, to draft a revised code and present a plan for submitting the code to the consideration of the institutional members of the Council. The committees reviewed the situation and approved adjusted codes for academic costumes at each convening. Under the existing code, bachelors’ gowns are made with pointed sleeves; masters’ gowns are made with long, closed sleeves with an arc near the bottom; doctors’ gowns are made with round, open sleeves. Usually gowns are black, although some American and foreign universities use colors. Bachelors’ and masters’ gowns are untrimmed. Doctors’ gowns are faced down the front with velvet and have three velvet bars across the sleeves. The velvet facing and bars may be black or they may be the color associated with the field of study. The Code calls for the outside shell of the hood to be black in all cases. The doctor’s hood is four feet in length; the master’s hood is three and one half feet long. Hoods are lined with the official colors of the university from which the wearer received the degree. The color of the velvet borders of the hoods, which are three and five inches wide for the master’s and doctoral degrees respectively, identify the fields of study to which the degree pertains. The color associated with nursing is apricot and, of course, the MSU colors are blue and gold.
