Bridge Program

UNO has offered English as a Second Language to international students for nearly 35 years.

The bridge program allows most undergraduate students with TOEFL scores of 48 or higher to take university coursework along with English as a Second Language classes. Students meet with ILUNO advisors and UNO faculty to select university courses suitable for their future educational plans.

Intensive Students are in class 21 hours every week. Sessions last eight weeks and are scheduled six times throughout the year.

Advantage Track

Personalized

Last academic year, nearly 400 students from more than 40 countries studied English in ILUNO. They joined more than 1,300 other international students and scholars at UNO, which has a total enrollment of almost 15,000.

New ILUNO students collaborate with program instructors to evaluate their English ability and select language classes at one of six levels – beginning to advanced. Experienced instructors teach reading and vocabulary, grammar and writing, listening, pronunciation, TOEFL preparation, and critical-thinking skills. Instructors are available daily to meet with students to discuss their class work, language skills, and future academic plans.

The Advantage Track is offered to students who want to take undergraduate courses at UNO without taking the TOEFL. Students complete a series of required ILUNO courses and proficiency exams in college-level reading, writing, and verbal communication to adequately prepare them for undergraduate work.

ILUNO students immerse themselves in the local community by volunteering with local nonprofits or making cultural presentations at schools and events throughout the greater Omaha area.

Conditional Admission Many ILUNO students, while lacking English proficiency, are otherwise qualified for undergraduate or graduate coursework. These students may receive conditional admission into academic programs at UNO. They know in advance that they can begin studies in a degree program immediately after completing ILUNO.

When I came to UNO a few months ago, I had no idea that I would have this much fun and also receive such a high level of teaching. I experienced the warmest welcome when my fellow students and I arrived. I just finished my first session in ILUNO, and I am now qualified to fully enroll at the university next semester. The teachers, advisors, and volunteers at ILUNO are really friendly. They have always been helpful, which was the main reason that I adapted to life here so quickly. For instance, they helped me find a place to live on campus, making it very easy to settle in. They also recommended places to visit and shop. They made it easy to cope with this “new” lifestyle, and in fact I’m enjoying it. I am glad that I’m here and I wouldn’t wish to change my decision at all.

Enrolling in the ILUNO program was my first step on the way to completing my studies in the United States. It was a solid one. Indeed, I benefited from the experience of teachers who give students the most important and practical tools to learn the English language. From the first day that I joined the program, I was put into an environment full of people from different places all over the world. We all received a warm welcome and plenty of support from ILUNO instructors and staff and residents of the Omaha community.
