ROOT CAUSES Today’s Gospel shows John the Baptist clashing with the Jewish religious authorities. We are told that the Pharisees and Sadducees were stepping forward to be baptized by John. These people “did not believe him” (Mt 21:32), but they came forward anyway, boasting of the claim that “Abraham is our father.” John recognized them for what they were, people of privilege Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance,” he told them (Mt 3:8). He did not object to their coming forward; he objected to their lack of concern for real change in society. In his brief discourse to the Pharisees and Sadducees, John described the action that was taking place: “Even now the ax is laid to the root of the tree (Mt 3:10).” Every tree that is not fruitful will be cut down and thrown into the fire. John’s message was about justice, about social change. He challenged the people of Israel to get down to the root causes of problems, to uproot unfruitful trees. The changes that are called for in Advent are fundamental and far-reaching; they are structural. In this new church year, we are challenged to work for a better society, different from the one we now have. The uniqueness of the Christian message does not so much consist in the affirmation of the necessity for structural change, as it does in the insistence on the conversion of people which will in turn bring about this change. We will not have a new continent without new and reformed structures, but, above all, there will be no new continent without new people, who know how to be truly free and responsible according to the light of the Gospel.

As many of you know, I had hernia surgery recently and was out of commission for a few days. Following the surgery, I spent four days at Saint Agnes Home recovering. It was a positive learning experience on many levels. First of all, I learned to take orders. Saint Agnes is a wonderful place and I would recommend it to anyone with an elderly loved one in need of care. (It is run by the Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus. They are a more traditional order of Sister who wear floor-length habits. I was surprised by the number of younger Sisters working there who are in their twenties and thirties.) But when it comes to a person recovering from surgery, they certainly know how to make a person obey. When I got back from the hospital, I was flying high on anesthesia and painkillers. The nurse told me I needed a TB shot, and I told her, no way, I’ve already had one. The Sister in charge of the floor came in and assured me there was no problem, as long as I got the shot. So I got the shot. They also told me that under state law, I had to turn over the pain pills the hospital gave me, but I could have one whenever I needed it. I had already put them away and told them not to worry about it. That didn’t work, and so I turned over the pills. After that, we had no more problems. I will say that to a person, the Sisters, nurses, and aides at Saint Agnes are wonderful people who are kind, respectful, and treat everyone with love. It is a beautiful place and the four days I was there was like a retreat. As I said, I would recommend it to anyone. A second thing I learned during those few short days of recovery is that when we are sick and a little vulnerable, God is very close. Each day I went to the Mass and since my room was near the choir loft, several times I went in and listened to the Sisters while they chanted the Divine Office. Both during those moments of communal worship and when I was alone in my room, I felt God’s presence in a way I don’t always do when I’m busy with all the things that happen in the course of a day. It was a reminder to me of how important it is when we are busy to slow down and ask where God is in the moment, rather than focusing solely on the task at hand. I was also touched by all of the kind people who remembered me in their prayers, who stopped in to visit, or who called. Many people also wished me well before the surgery, or inquired about my health when I returned. While this was a minor surgery, it still felt really good to have such kindness expressed to me at a time when I was tired and a little sore. Finally, I really came to a deeper awareness of all the health problems members of our parish community are facing. We have people in our community facing major surgeries, cancer treatments, or who live with a number of disabilities. Most of them still come to Mass, and they bring with them a very positive attitude. Their smiles are a sign of strength and deep faith. How important they are to our community! Equally important are all of our homebound parishioners. They remain a vital part of our community even though they can no longer come to Mass. I’m really glad we are now “commissioning” our ministers to the homebound at each liturgy with a prayer as they prepare to visit our sick brothers and sisters with the Eucharist. It adds an extra moment to the Mass, but we need that reminder each week that our community includes our sick and elderly members. So if I had any advice to give anyone else facing a surgery or illness, it would be simple. Slow down, allow others to take care of you for a few days, do what the doctors and nurses tell you, and don’t forget to allow God to be present to you in the process. And don’t forget to pray for the sick once you are healthy…because you can be sure, many of them use their extra time praying for you!

SACRED HEART SCHOOL As we enter the second week of Advent, we continue to wait with joyful hearts for the coming of Jesus. This month we challenged the students to work on kind words and deeds, as we strive to be a united school community. Kindness doesn’t always mean doing something for others, but can also be bettering ourselves to make us more like Jesus. Controlling our temper, waiting our turn, and listening carefully during Mass are all ways we show that we are faithful servants. The preschoolers put on a wonderful performance for their annual Holy Family Night! It is truly inspiring to have so many small voices come together to make a joyful noise for our Lord. Crafts and snacks make it an extra special evening for the students and their families. This week we welcome Archbishop Carlson to Sacred Heart as the celebrant for the Region 4 Eighth Grade Mass. The students will celebrate together, and then have time to mingle during a small reception. With so many helping hands in one place, we will be assembling Blessings Bags for the Sweet Babies program at St. Mary’s Hospital; this program helps low income mothers and newborns during the first few weeks after birth. What a perfect way to show kindness and service during the Advent season! If you know a family who is interested in our Preschool programs and/or Elementary School, please have them contact the school office to schedule a tour. We love welcoming perspective families into our school to see us in action! Again, thank you for your support of Sacred Heart Catholic School! Angie Lind Principal

CHRISTMAS POINSETTIAS

Teen Spends $25K Bar Mitzvah Money to Buy Hundreds of Shoes for Others EL PASO, TX - A teen in Texas could have used the thousands of dollars he got for his bar mitzvah on himself. He is crazy about expensive kicks, and could have bought a car with the money. Instead, Drew Frank outfitted an entire elementary school in a lower income neighborhood of El Paso with new Nikes. He also donated shoes and socks to a local orphanage and a YWCA transitional living center for women and children, with help from the Braden Aboud Foundation. “The smiles on their faces were amazing when I gave them out.“ he told KTRK Houston.
