Merici Chapel… December — the time of giving & receiving. In a few weeks, we will celebrate the greatest gift of all time from God, our Father — our Savior, His only begotten Son. He also gave us another precious gift — time: we cannot buy it, keep it or sell it. Let’s try & use some of that precious gift of time & visit Jesus in Merici Chapel. Thank Him & God for all we have received in our lives.

The lighting of the second candle on the wreath reminds us that this is the Second Sunday of Advent. We will hear confessions after all our weekend Masses today (except the Sunday 5:30pm Mass). This Monday December 8, is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and a holyday of obligation. There will be a holyday Vigil Mass this Sunday, December 7, at 5:30pm. Masses on the Monday holyday will be at 7:00, 8:30, 10:00am and at 4:00 and 7:00pm. It is permissible to attend either a Saturday evening or a Sunday morning Mass to meet the weekend obligation and then attend Sunday 5:30pm Mass for the holyday obligation. Or you may attend the Sunday 5:30pm Mass to meet your weekend obligation (even though it is an Immaculate Conception Mass) and then attend Mass on Monday for the holyday. Bottom line: we are expected to attend Mass twice: once for the weekend, once for the holyday. The Blessed Mother, under the title of the Immaculate Conception, is patroness of the United States. The image of the Immaculate Conception is the first of our “ceiling saints” (on the left, as you face the sanctuary). And what are the colors used in that painting? Why, “red, white, and blue” of course! “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!” Those of you who have been around St Charles for a while know that I very rarely mention second collections. There are a number of good causes that ask us for our help throughout the year and those second collection envelopes are clearly marked in your packet. Other than when the missionary visits us in the summertime and my reminder for our “Fifth Sunday” St Vincent de Paul appeals, I leave second collections up to your good judgment. But I do make an exception at this time of year and ask for your help with next weekend’s “Sisters’ Retirement Fund” second collection. Those of us who are a little older remember those wonderful women, “the good Sisters,” who patiently taught us in grade school, instructed us in catechism, got us through high school and/or college, nursed us in hospitals--quietly and efficiently meeting so many needs of so many people for so many years. Those Sisters are aged and ill now. They served us with very little material reward. Now we should help them with their medical and retirement needs. I will always be grateful to the Sisters of the Incarnate Word who taught me at St Patrick School in West Park. My second grade teacher, Sister Jerome, still ministers daily at St Richard Parish in North Olmsted. Our paths cross from time-to-time--and Sister Jerome can still “put me in my place.” As a priest at St Charles, it has been my great privilege to work with the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland who have so faithfully served this parish since 1924. In my opinion, the Sisters are the unsung heroines of the Church. Please do the best you can next weekend in the second collection for the “Sisters’ Retirement Fund.” Reminders: Parish Council meets this Thursday, December 11, 7:45pm, JPII Room, Activities Center. We will welcome guest speaker Terri Preskar from the Diocesan Office on Stewardship. And plan to attend the Pancake Breakfast in the Lower Hall after next Sunday’s 7:30, 9:00, and 10:30am Masses.

NORTHEAST OHIO MEN’S FELLOWSHIP CONFERENCE March 21st, 2015 As men, life can be stressful and exhausting, numerous eyes look to us to be ―strong‖ and ―wise‖ and the pressure of them and the responsibilities of life can often feel like too much. Therefore, I’d like to invite you and challenge you to give Christ and the Church one full day of your life. Saturday March 21 st, 2015 is the Northeast Ohio Men’s Fellowship Conference. This conference is meant to provide the context where Christ can bring the true Father’s love and life into your heart and provide that divine energy to love those whom you are close to. Please do not shirk the responsibility to be a man that builds a culture of life and love instead of one of ego and isolation. For more information visit the website www.cmfneo.com.
