YEARS 8, 9 AND 10 – COMMENCEMENT OF SCHOOL

Besides this you know what hour it is, how it is full time now for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed: The night is far gone, the day is at hand. Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Romans 13:11-14 As we come to the end of the school year we also begin our season of Advent. Advent is the season of the church that is observed as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the birth of Christ. In some ways our students’ lives are a constant Advent season: they are continually waiting to become, to discover, to complete, and to fulfill. Hope, struggle, fear, expectation and fulfillment are all part of our Advent experience. The world is not as just, not as loving, not as whole as we know it can and should be. But the coming of Christ and his presence among us - as one of us - gives us reason to live in hope: that light will shatter the darkness, that we can be liberated from our fears and prejudices, that we are never alone or abandoned. May this Advent season be a time for bringing hope, transformation and fulfillment into the Advent of all our lives." Stuart Thompson – Malone Community Leader (Leadership Team)

I would like to congratulate our Graduation class of 2012 along with their parents and families on a great celebration this past Friday, 30 November. It was 17 to 18 years in the making and it was a joy to see our students formally finish their secondary education and embrace the next stage in their lives. From the Mass to the formal graduation ceremony to the graduation dinner, it was truly a very enjoyable and meaningful celebration. Thank you to all who contributed towards its success. As I said to the graduates in my address to them “All of our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them”, and “You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think“. Congratulations Graduates of 2012. May you always be on the journey of becoming real! May you become the next generation of “Wise Skin Horses” always helping others to become real as well, making our world a better place. Today I would also like to congratulate our Year 11 and 10 students who formally finished their Pre-Year 12 and 11 classes on Monday with their Awards Assembly and lunch. As I told them on Monday, we look forward to their Senior Leadership at the College next year. It is our senior students who set the atmosphere, texture and culture for all our students and we look forward to their leadership and working with them in 2013. Finally, the Year 10 Formal and Social last night, 4 December, was a dazzling array of our Year 10 students who looked fantastic! I find it amazing how much older and mature they appear on the night when dressed to the “nine’s”. Well done on a great night! Today, 5 December is our “Up-Day” for years 7, 8, 9 and 10 for 2013. Our orientation days is always an exciting time, the Year 6s coming to the College and the other year levels advancing upwards, Year 9s entering the Senior School. Thanks to all who make it happen. HUGH FUCHSEN – JAPAN SHORT-TERM SCHOLARSHIP Hugh Fuchsen, a Year 11 student has been successful in his application for a short-term scholarship to Japan. The program is run by the Japanese government with the objective of promoting other countries’ understanding with regards to Japan’s road to recovery. 200 Australian students and educators will visit the earthquake-affected areas with school visits and volunteer activities organised by the Japan International Cooperation Centre. Following the visit to the affected areas, the group will assemble in Tokyo to share their understanding and thoughts about what they have experienced. The program covers airfare, insurance, accommodation, meals, activities and transportation. Students will complete an orientation program prior to departure and enrichment activities will be conducted during their stay. The American Field Scholarship group is working with the Japanese government to coordinate the program and students will be able to access the American Field Scholarships support network 24/7 while they are travelling. This is a wonderful opportunity for one of our students and we are sure that Hugh will not only gain immeasurably, but will also be an exceptional representative of our school community. WELL DONE TO ALL YEAR 9 STUDENTS ON THEIR MOCK INTERVIEWS! On Tuesday, 21 November, Year 9 students participated in mock interviews with industry representatives and teachers. The mock interviews were the final task in their World of Work subject. Their teachers, Eamonn Buckley, Kieran Mullins, Emily Walsh, Steve Demamiel and Peter Symons worked hard to prepare the students for their interviews by assisting them to develop industry standard resume and application letters and interview skills. All students applied for the same job at the ‘Wodonga Supermarket’. Students wore clothes that were appropriate for a job interview and all looked very professional. Interviewers were given the student’s application letter and resume and interviewed each student for approximately ten minutes. Once the interview was complete, the interviewer filled out a feed back template which gave the student feed back on their dress, body language and how they answered questions. Students have since written a thank-you letter to their interviewer and have completed a reflection task. Thank you to all students for how seriously they took the task - all were very impressive! UPPER HUME TENNIS CARNIVAL On Wednesday, 31 October the Upper Hume Tennis Carnival was held at the Wodonga Tennis Centre. We had four teams represent Catholic College in the Junior Competition this year. The Year 7 girls had four games for the day against Wodonga Middle Years College (Huon), Wangaratta High School, Cathedral College and Galen College. Wins over all four schools saw them win their division for the day. The Year 7 Boys had two games for the day against Cathedral College and Wodonga Middle Years College (Felltimber). Winning both these games brought the boys into the final but unfortunately they lost to Galen. The Year 8 girls had four games for the day and the Year 8 boys had three finishing 3rd overall, a great effort by all the teams! On 30 November, the Year 7 girls traveled to Melbourne for the State Finals. The girls played three games against Edenhope College, Montmorency Secondary College and Mount Waverley Secondary College. ALUMNI UPDATE This year I was able to help organize two successful reunions of Catholic College Alumni. The first, held in July, was a dinner at Café Grove where 57 students from the graduating class of 1992 got together for a meal and a few drinks and a catch up. The night was so much fun the group is already planning their 25-year reunion for 2017! In October the graduating class of 2002 gathered at Catholic College for a BBQ and school tours to celebrate their 10-year reunion. It was agreed that much had changed at the school in that time whereas most of the past students hadn’t changed much at all! We have also had many and varied past students visit the school this year to talk to current students about careers and post school experiences. We value, appreciate and celebrate this valuable input from our alumni. Next year I will be looking to support the graduating classes of 2003 (10 years), 1993 (20 years), 1988 (25 years) in their preparations of their milestone celebrations. If you know of someone from those years, I am more than happy to be of assistance with planning. The next edition of Catholic College Connections will be published early next year. Articles and photographs are invited from Alumni and their families for the information of the College family and friends. Gabby Dodds Alumni and Archive Coordinator

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES (ICT) UPDATE ICT Services Centre The College ICT Services staff are available from 8.00am - 4.30pm during Monday to Thursday and 8.00am 4.00pm on Fridays for Free ICT Support. Students and parents are welcome to visit the centre during these times or email any queries to [email protected]. 2012 MacBook Return Last week Years 9 and 12 students returned their hired MacBooks to ICT Services. It is pleasing to report that the majority of these have been returned in good working order. However, the final test will come when they are passed back to the lease company. Please note that any second hand MacBook purchased from the College must be taken to ICT Services so that Pages, Numbers and Keynote can be removed. MacBook Pros for Year 7 Students in 2013 In the continued belief that middle school students need a powerfully creative learning tool the College has made the decision to issue a MacBook Pro to each Year 7 student in 2013. With the MacBook Pro students will be able to create complex movies, spreadsheets, presentations, word processed documents as well as find information on the internet and access their email. On Tuesday 19 February 2013 at 7.30pm the College will be hosting a compulsory Parent Student ICT Forum for Year 7 families. At the end of the forum students will be issued with their MacBook Pro. In 2013 the College will be charging families $530 for the hire of the MacBook Pro. The College plans to charge families similar amounts in 2014 and 2015. It is also envisaged that families will be offered the opportunity to purchase their child's MacBook for a nominal amount at the end of 2015. Students whose families opt to purchase the MacBook Pro at the end of 2015 will be able to use it on the College network through Year 10 to 12. Full details about the Parent Student ICT Forum and the MacBook hire agreement will be sent home to families early next year. iPad's for Year 10 Students in 2013 The College is excited to announce that next year each student in Year 10 will be issued with an Apple iPad. Based on research, case studies of similar schools and a comprehensive trial carried over a three-month period the College believes that the iPad is the perfect learning tool for senior students. The nature of senior school classes is very different to those in middle school. In senior school the emphasis is on consumption of information and the building of skills in preparation for examinations and assessment tasks. The iPad is a fast and lightweight tablet computer that allows students to easily consume information and communicate with others. With the iPad students are able to find information on the internet, read textbooks and notes prepared by their teachers, access their email account and much more. Further information can be found in the ipad eduction section of the Apple website: http://www.apple.com/au/education/ipad/. Staff will engage in a series of extensive professional learning activities towards the end of this year to ensure they are prepared for the roll out in early 2013. On Tuesday 12 February 2013 at 7.30pm the College will be hosting a compulsory Parent Student ICT Forum for Year 10 families. At the end of the forum students will be issued with their iPad. In 2013 the College will be charging families $300 for the hire of the iPad. The College plans to charge families similar amounts in 2014 and 2015. It is also envisaged that families will be offered the opportunity to purchase their child's iPad for a nominal amount at the end of 2015. Full details about the Parent Student ICT Forum and the iPad hire agreement will be sent home to families early next year. What about the Year 11 and 12 Students in 2013? In 2013 every student in Year 7 to 10 will possess a device that they can use both at school and home. The COW's (Computers on Wheels), housed in various locations throughout the campus, will be dedicated to the Year 11 and 12 students. Families may also elect to voluntary hire a device from the College. Full details can be found in the letter sent out to families on the 5 December. Student Internet and Printing Quotas It is pleasing to note that students have recently been managing their internet and printing quotas more effectively than in the past. The College provides students with generous monthly amounts that should not be exceeded. However, if in the event that a student needs more credit they should make a purchase through the Student Office.

MacBook Survival Guide Attached to this newsletter is the MacBook Survival Guide. The guide is designed to serve as a quick reference for parents and students. It reinforces information that the College has previously made available to families in newsletters, parent forums, user manuals, policies and user agreements. Parents should take the time to discuss the content of the guide with their child. It would be useful to keep the guide in a prominent place within the house. I would also like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the hard working and highly competent staff who work in ICT Services. Hayden Middlin, Michael Ratcliffe and Jackie Surman have provided excellent service to students, parents and staff throughout 2012. Thankyou! Have a Happy and Merry Christmas. Shane Piper Director of ICT
