Like  A.  mollis  but  the  basal  leaves  usually   pinnatisect;  leaf  lobes  narrowed  at  base;   upper  cauline  leaves  more  or  less  petiolate;   lower  lip  of  calyx  pubescent  at  apex. Rich  green  finely  cut  leaves  narrowly  radiate   from  the  petiole  providing  a  very  lacy  effect.   Fall  colors  are  a  brilliant  range  of  red-‐orange   yellow. Palm  shaped  leaves  emerge  with  a  magical   pastel  pink  and  rose  overlay.  As  the  season   progresses  the  foliage  ages  to  pale  green.   Plants  assume  an  upright,  arching  form  and   reach  10-‐12’  tall  when  mature. 'Apricot  Delight'  produces  a  chameleon-‐like   range  of  pinks  from  pale  apricot  to  near  red.   Full  sun  intensifies  the  hues. 'Saucy  Seduction'  produces  large  rosy-‐pink   heads  with  subtle  white  shading  from  June   into  August.  To  2'  tall  and  2'  across. ‘Walther  Funcke’  is  a  rhizomatous,  spreading,   upright  yarrow  cultivar  that  is  noted  for  its   brick-‐red  flowers,  gray-‐green  foliage  and   compact  size.  It  features  deeply-‐dissected,   fern-‐like,  aromatic,  gray-‐green  leaves  and   tiny,  long-‐lasting,  brick-‐red  flowers  with   contrasting  yellow  centers Bred  for  compact  growth  with  large  barn  red   flower  heads,  up  to  4"  across.  Perfect  in  the   landscape  or  containers,  or  for  dried  flower   arrangements.  To  18"  tall.

notes

The  large,  deeply  lobed  leaves  are  glossy  and   dramatic,  held  out  flat  on  long,  black  stems  in   many  layers.  The  foliage  portion  of  the  plant   reaches  about  two  feet  high  and  nearly  as   wide,  "lightening"  to  dark  violet-‐burgundy  as   the  hot  weather  of  summer  sets  in.  Tall,   crowded  bottlebrushes  of  mauve  mature  to   soft  pink,  wonderfully  fragrant  and  a  magnet   for  butterflies. Leaves  deciduous,  upt  to  28cm  long  and   1.3cm  wide,  upright,  strongly  ribbed   beneath.  Peduncle  45-‐70cm  tall.   Inflorescence  of  20-‐25  flowers.  Insides  of  the   flowers  are  violet-‐blue  (92A),  segmets   sometimes  recurved,  2.9cm  long  (tube  1cm),   3.8cm  across.  Mainly  seed  propagated  since   its  introduction  and  so  better  to  regard  this   as  a  group  of  plants  that  look  similar  rather   than  a  proper  cultivar. Perennial  with  stolons;  stems  reaching  8";   rosette  leaves  to  2"  long,  leaflets  5  to  7,   oblong-‐obovate,  toothed  at  the  tip,  silky-‐ hairy,  especially  beneath,  stem  leaves   reduced;  calyx  tube  strigose,  stamens  4. 8”  tall,  early  flowering  (June  to  August),  with   small,  scalloped  leaves,  red  stems,  and   yellowish-‐green  flowers  in  the  spring.   Requires  partial  shade  and  consistent   moisture  to  thrive.  Readily  self-‐sows,  divide   in  the  early  spring  before  flowering. Alchemilla  sericata  ‘Gold  Strike’  has  bright   chartreuse  flowering  umbels  and  velvety  gray-‐ green,  scalloped  foliage.  It  is  a  free  flowering   plant  that  blooms  from  June  to  August  and   maintains  a  compact  habit.  14"  tall.

notes

This  Allium  came  from  England  Herb  Farm.   Strong,  strap-‐like  leaves  bear  umbels  of  pink   flowers.  A  strong,  clump-‐former  once   established.  Some  sources  list  this  as  Allium   schoenoprasum  'Pink  Feathers'  but  it's  not   that,  it  is  probably  a  form  of  A.  senescens   according  to  Allium  expert  Mark  McDonough.   H:  8"  W:  8" Huge,  8"  purple-‐white  flowers  on  72"  stems.   The  unique,  corn-‐like  foliage  emerges   partially  along  the  stem  as  well  as  from  the   ground  and  has  a  distinct  bend.  Adequate   moisture  and  intense  drainage  are  essential   to  achieve  full  height  without  falling  over. Flowering  stems  reach  20"-‐30"  in  height;   violet-‐purple  flowers  are  held  in  a  4"   diameter  umbel,  effective  in  late  May. Stems  reach  20"-‐30"  in  height;  fragrant   flowers  are  dark  wine-‐red,  held  in  2"   diameter  loose  umbels,  effective  in  May  and   June. Stems  reach  1.5  m  in  height;  flowers  pink,   held  in  very  dense  inflorescences  the   stamens  very  prominent. Slight,  grassy  foliage.  Flowers  nod  in  bud,   turning  upwards  after  pollination;  they  are   rich  amethyst  purple.  Inclined  to  sow  itself   freely.  Plants  2'  tall  6"  wide. Plants  reach  30-‐80  cm  in  flower  with  3-‐5  semi-‐ terete,  broadly  grooved,  3  mm  wide  leaves   carried  on  the  lower  1/3  of  the  flower  stalk.   Flowers  purple  to  carmine  red,  campanulate,   held  in  3  cm  diameter,  globose,  dense,  many-‐ flowered  umbels  in  July  and  August. Plants  have  a  vibrant  array  of  tangerine   colored  flowers  that  blanket  sturdy,  upright   stems  from  May  until  first  frost.  A  creamy   yellow  throat  and  deep  speckling  accentuate   flowers.  Height  30",  spread  12-‐18".  Protect   with  a  layer  of  mulch  in  cooler  regions  as   uniform  soil  temperature  extends  bloom   period.  Can  take  Zone  5  when  protected  and   well  mulched. Plants  reach  40"  in  height;  single  flowers  are   burgundy-‐red.

notes

Introduced  in  1902.  Bears  a  remarkable   resemblance  to  the  original  A.  hupehensis   var.  japonica;  its  color  is  slightly  darker,  the   segments  rather  longer,  and  the  leaves  less   acutely  pointed;  moreover  the  pollen  is   mainly  infertile.  Selected  in  Germany  by   Wilhelm  Pfitzer.  Of  late  years  this  has   appeared  erroneously  in  some  lists  under  the   name  'Profusion',  which  is  a  totally  different   variety  (G.S.  Thomas).  Flowers  large,  double,   deep  purplish-‐pink  (Hebb). Leaves  green  turning  purple-‐black;  flowers   creamy-‐white. A  long  season  bloomer,  from  late  spring  to   summer  with  tall,  15"  stems  bearing  large,   rose-‐pink  globes  over  dense  foliage,  forming   clumps. Numerous  rose  red  blooms  from  mid  through   late  spring,  reblooming  sporadically   throughout  the  summer  months.  ‘Ballerina   Red’  has  broad  evergreen  leaves,  stiff  flower   stems,  and  1"  large  round  flower  clusters.   Armeria  overwinters  well  and  once   established  is  heat  and  salt  tolerant.  To  14"   tall  and  16"  across. Males  more  attractive  and  feathery  in  bloom,   but  females  provide  attractive  seed  heads   which  persistûinto  winter.  Plants  6-‐7'  tall,  4'   wide. Evergreen;  leaves  2,  to  3"  across,  uniformly   green,  glossy,  petioles  to  5"  long;  flowers   greenish-‐purple  orûbrown,  1/2"  long. Erect,  largely  hispidulous  perennial;  stems   simple,  robust,  crowded,  reaching  0.75-‐2  m   in  height.  Roots  tuberous,  the  rootstock   becoming  woody  with  age.  Leaves  to  11.5  cm   long,  narrow-‐lanceolate,  crowded,  loosely   spirally  arranged  on  stem.  Inflorescence  an   axillary,  flat-‐topped  cyme;  corolla  lobes   yellow,  orange,  or  vermillion,  the  hoods   stalked. Plants  reach  18"  in  height;  foliage  mildew-‐ resistant;  flowers  large,  clear  pink,  effective   in  late  August  into  September.

Numerous  white  daisies  are  produced  in   dense  clusters  on  branching  sprays  in  fall.   The  foliage  is  small  and  silvery.  Spreads   rapidly  but  is  not  invasive.  Plants  form   compact  clumps  to  4'  in  height;  strong  stems   do  not  require  staking. Leaves  handsomely  parti-‐colored  with  white;   brought  to  England  from  a  Dutch  garden  by   Douglas  Dawson  before  1969.

COMMON  BOXWOOD

A  discovery  from  Michigan,  where  it  had   been  propagated  from  boxwood  sprigs  used   as  decorations  on  a  gift  box  of  apples  sent   from  New  York  in  the  1930's.  Rich  medium   green  leaves  with  a  bluish  cast  and  a  billowy   pyramidal  shape.  Unlike  many  boxwood   cultivars,  'Elizabeth  Inglis'  tolerates  direct  sun   quite  well,  and  is  quite  cold-‐hardy.  Growing   in  an  exposed  location  at  Frelinghuysen   Arboretum  in  northern  NJ,  it  got  high  ratings   on  resistance  to  leaf  miner,  appearance  and   ease  of  growing.  Also  resistant  to  boxwood   psyllid  and  mites.  6  x  6  feet.  Zones  5-‐8.

COMMON  BOXWOOD

A  cold  hardy,  dense  globe  that  requires  little   if  any  pruning  to  form  a  low,  dense,  thick   hedge.  Shiny  dark  green  leaves  maintain   good  winter  color.

Rounded  dwarf  reaching  2.5'  in  10  years. Red  flowers,  unscented. 'Korean  Fire'  is  an  evergreen  camellia  that   typically  grows  over  time  to  10-‐15’  tall  and  to   8’  wide  with  elliptic  to  obovate,  glossy,  dark   green  leaves.  Flat,  single,  bright  red  flowers   with  yellow  center  stamens  bloom  in  early   spring.  Introduced  by  Barry  Yinger  through   Hines  Nursery  from  plants  collected  in  Korea   in  1984.  2003  Pennsylvania  Horticultural   Society  Gold  Medal  Winner. Campanula  'Pink  Octopus'  displays  Japanese   lantern  buds  which  open  to  striking  pink,   octopus-‐like  flowers.  Each  flower  stem  can   have  over  50  blooms  over  the  deeply  cut   foliage.  Campanula  'Pink  Octopus'  is  very   easy  to  grow  and  tolerant  of  most  soils.

notes

Masses  of  large  silvery  blue  flowers  will   adorn  Campanula  'Summertime  Blues'  from   spring  into  the  summer  with  some  bloom   even  in  the  fall.  The  long-‐lasting  blooms  are   bell-‐shaped  and  are  on  2  foot  tall  stems.  It   has  an  excellent  clumping  habit  that  does  not   spread  or  reseed. Upright,  unbranched,  finely  pubescent   perennial  reaching  1m  in  height;  deep  violet-‐ blue  flowers  are  effective  in  summer. Pubescent  perennial  with  decumbent  stems;   flowers  large,  medium-‐blue,  funnelform-‐star-‐ shaped,  held  in  a  loose  raceme  or  panicle,   opening  throughout  the  summer. Campanula  punctata  'Plum  Wine'  has  wine   colored  foliage  that  has  a  silvery  luster  to  it   which  is  accented  by  large,  light  pink  flowers   nearly  all  summer  long;  plants  form  compact,   slowly  spreading  clumps. Bright  blue  flowers  in  clusters  from  July  to   September.  Plants  12"  tall. Tree,  40  to  60'  in  height  with  a  spread  of  20   to  40',  but  sometimes  reaching  100'  or  more   in  the  wild.  Crown  narrow,  open  and   irregular,  can  be  quite  striking  in  winter.  Bark   greyish  brown  on  old  trunks.  Flowers  white,   2"  long  and  wide,  the  tube  bell-‐shaped,  the   lobes  spreading  and  frilled  at  the  margin,  the   lower  one  with  yellow  spots  and  ridges  as  in   C.  bignonioides,  but  less  freely  spotted  with   purple,  in  large  upright  terminal  panicles,  4   to  8"  long.  Fruit  an  8  to  20"  long  capsule,  1/2   to  3/4"  wide,  persisting  through  winter,   contains  numerous  fringed  seeds. This  flowering  quince  is  unusual  in  that  it   doesn't  have  any  thorns.  The  plant  will  get  2-‐ 3  feet  tall  and  wide.  The  flowers  are  orange   red  in  March  and  though  the  individual   flowers  are  small  there  are  lots  of  flowers  on   the  stems. Plants  reach  30"-‐36"  in  height;  new  foliage  is   tinged  bronze  and  matures  to  a  very  dark   green;  stems  reddish;  flowers  pink,  effective   in  late  summer.

This  introduction  has  been  described  as  an   "Autumn  Red"  with  a  gold  edge  on  the  ray   florets  on  a  2  1/2"  semi-‐double  bloom.   However,  Lazy  S's  Farm  Nursery  has  found   the  blooms  to  be  more  peachy  coral  than   red.  Usually  has  30-‐32  flowering  stems  with   16-‐18  flowers  per  stem.  H:  22-‐24"  W:  Slowly   indefinite. An  old  selection,  with  palest  pink,  almost   white,  2"  single  daisies  in  October.  To  30",  if   not  pinched  in  early  July. Compact  mound-‐forming  plants  produce   button-‐shaped  lemon-‐yellow  flowers. Flowers  soft  yellow,  plants  to  18-‐36" Incredible  fall  display  of  pale  salmon  pink   flowers  from  this  fully  perennial  mum.   Spreading  habit,  good  vigor  and  excellent   hardiness.  Flowers  even  continue  after  a  light   frost.  A  fabulous  near  luminous  color  that   can  actually  be  detected  from  a  great   distance.  H:24-‐36"  W:  24-‐36" Late,  profuse  bloomer,  with  medium  red   flowers.  18"  tall. A  Korean  Mum  hybrid  that  has  been  around   North  Carolina  gardens  for  over  40  years.  It   reaches  30"  in  height  and  18"  in  width  and   should  be  pinched  back  in  mid-‐July  to   maintain  bushiness.  Flowers  are  semi-‐double,   rich  coral-‐pink. Medium  to  large,  single,  mauve  flowers  with   a  slight  pink  bar.  Pink  anthers.  Publicity   photographs  would  suggest  that  some  early   flowers  can  be  semi-‐double.  A  member  of   the  Evison/Poulsen®  'Flora'  collection   released  in  2003.   Medium-‐sized  deciduous  climber,  the  15cm   wide  flowers  with  six  deep  velvety-‐red  sepals   and  greenish-‐yellow  stamens. This  crocosmia  hybrid  from  the  UK's  David   Tristam  produces  2'  tall  flowering  stalks,  each   with  large  numbers  of  2"  wide,  outfacing   golden  flowers  with  recurved  petals.  The   soft,  sword-‐like  green  foliage  is  nearly  hidden   by  the  masses  of  flowers  during  the  summer   months. Deep  yellow  flowers  with  a  purplish  brown   base;  plants  up  to  12"  tall. Early  blooming  with  creamy  yellow  exterior   and  buff  yellow  interior. Massive  flower  spikes  on  3  foot  plants  are   shades  of  blue,  purple  and  white,  many  with   contrasting  black  or  white  'bees'.  Plants   bloom  in  June  and  July  and  may  rebloom  if   cut  down  after  flowering. Dendranthema  'Harmony'  produces  plenty  of   bright  yellow,  2.5  inch  daisy-‐like  blooms  that   fade  to  a  creamy  yellow  with  pink  tones  as   they  age.

Geranium  hybrid  (G.  sanguineum  x   psilostemon).  Each  plant  makes  a  2'  wide   clump  of  cutleaf  green  foliage,  10"  tall,   topped  all  summer  with  the  1"  lavender   flowers.  Also  sold  in  the  USA  under  the  name   'Rolf  Royce'  (Plantsman  Sept.  2006) This  hybrid  geranium  is  a  spreading,   rhizomatous  plant  typically  growing  6-‐10"   high.  Features  masses  of  5  petaled,  carmine   red  flowers  3/4"  in  diameter  which  bloom  in   late  spring.  Rounded,  lobed,  medium  green   foliage.  A  low  growing  spreader  that  can   quickly  form  a  respectable  carpet. Flowers  very  light  silvery-‐pink  without  darker   veining,  produced  in  abundance  over  a  long   period. Plants  reach  15"  in  height  and  width;  foliage   with  a  central  dark  bronze  blotch  and  silvery-‐ pink  flowers  with  purple  veins.  Named  for   Katherine  Adele  Jones,  Robert  Jones'  mother   (Jones  is  co-‐owner  of  Heronswood  Nursery). Plants  reach  18"  in  height  with  deeply   saturated  dark  pink  flowers  effective   throughout  the  summer. Compact,  carpeting,  useful  as  weed-‐ suppressing  ground  cover.  Apple  scented   leaves  turn  bronze  &  scarlet  in  autumn.  Semi-‐ evergreen.  Drought  tolerant  when   established.  Rhizomatous,  quick  spreader.   White  flowers  and  pink  sepals. Exceptionally  ornamental  foliage  is  silver   overlain  with  greenish  yellow;  flowers  are   mauve-‐purple,  effective  in  spring. Sold  as  'Muldoon'  for  many  years;  foliage   blotched  and  streaked  with  white  and  pink;   flowers  dark  lavender-‐burgundy  (DS  467).   The  plant  Yeo  describes  sounds  somewhat   different:  irregular  pale  yellow  variegation   towards  the  leaf  margins,  the  variegated   areas  usually  somewhat  curled  (DS  57). A  purple  foliaged  geranium  in  spring  and   later  turns  dark  green  with  a  purple  edge  and   a  compact  habit  with  large  deep  blue  purple   flowers. From  the  garden  of  Connie  Hansen,  Lincoln   City,  OR.  Highly  distinctive,  large,  light  pink   flowers  with  a  pale  center.

notes Flowers  of  good,  strong,  purple  are  borne   throughout  the  season;  plants  to  15"  tall;   foliage  assumes  colorful  tints  in  fall. Geum  'Mai  Tai'  bears  semi-‐double  1  1/2"   ruffled  apricot  blossoms  which  contrast  well   on  14"  burgundy  stems  in  late  May-‐  July.   Pretty  as  a  cut  flower,  and  the  deer  aren't   interested. This  is  cultivar  is  close  to  the  species  G.   dalenii,  flowers  with  tones  of  apricot,  buff   and  gold.  It  retains  the  dignity  of  a  species   glad,  with  flowers  spaced  out  a  bit  along  the   spike.  Once  established,  it  gets  quite  tall,  and   multiplies. Double  pink  flowers  on  18"  tall  plants. A  de  Belder  selection  from  the  mid-‐1990's,   'Gingerbread'  has  scented,  dark  orange   flowers  in  late  winter.  The  medium  to  dark   green  foliage  flushes  out  purple  in  spring. Midwinter  flowers  sport  thick  petals  and  are   lightly  scented.  Richly  colored  bright  orange   and  yellow  petals  blend  with  a  darker  base. Witch-‐Hazel  expert,  Chris  Lane,  reports  that   'Winter  Dawn'  is  the  first  Witch  Hazel  to   flower,  always  before  Christmas  in  the  U.K.   Flowers  are  red-‐orange  at  the  base  shading   to  gold  at  the  tips,  creating  an  overall   impression  of  soft  orange  .  There  is  an   excellent,  spicy  fragrance.  In  fall,  leaves  turn   a  lovely  scarlet  and  gold. Height  1.1m.  Masses  of  rich  mahogany  red   flowers  surrounding  a  green  center  that   matures  to  a  dark  chocolate  brown  and   opens  with  a  halo  of  golden  anthers.   Somewhat  bare  lower  stems.   Clump-‐forming  plants  reach  6'  in  height;   flowers  are  profuse,  soft  yellow,  effective  in   late  summer. Yellow  dahlia-‐like  blooms  brighten  the   garden  like  sunshine  from  June  through   August.  The  dome-‐like  flowers  are  2.5"  across   and  sit  upon  sturdy  stems.  Easy  to  grow  in   full  sun  with  average,  moist  to  well  drained   soil.  In  10  years  plants  can  be  4'  wide  and  5'   tall.

The  correct  name  =  'Ogon  Giboshi'  from   "Ogon"  meaning  gold,  although  'Wogon'  has   been  registered  with  the  IRA  and  has  been   accepted  as  a  valid  cultivar  name.  This   cultivar  is  one  of  the  many  named  yellow   forms  of  H.  sieboldii.  Plants  6"  tall,  12"  wide;   leaves  4"  long,  1.5"  wide,  ovate.  flat,  yellow.   Flower  scape  14"  tall,  flowers  purple,  bell-‐ shaped. Flowers  pink,  fragrant. Early  to  bloom,  then  reblooms.  This  lacecap   Hydrangea  has  beautiful,  double  white   flowers.  Its  smaller  stature  makes  it   wonderful  for  mixed  borders  and  a  stunning   container  plant.  2'  tall  x  3'  wide  in  5  years. Hydrangea  Pinky  Winky™  is  a  unique   Hydrangea  with  two-‐toned  flower  heads  in   mid-‐summer.  The  large,  12-‐16  inches  long   flower  heads  emerge  white,  turn  pink  and   continue  to  push  new  white  flowers  from  the   tip  of  the  panicle.  The  flowers  are  held   upright  on  strong  stems  and  contrast  nicely   against  dark  green  foliage.  It  blooms   regardless  of  climate,  soil,  pH  or  pruning.  A   truly  remarkable  plant  for  the  summer  and   autumn  landscape. INVINCIBELLE™  Spirit  hydrangea  is  the  first   pink  flowered,  mop-‐head  form  of  Hydrangea   arborescens.  Unlike  other  selections  it   continues  to  produce  new  flowers  right  up   until  frost.  It  is  very  hardy  and  easy  to  grow.   The  flower  buds  are  produced  on  new  wood,   so  it  will  still  produce  flowers  even  if  the   stems  die  back  to  the  ground  in  winter.  4'  x   4'.

notes

A  selection  of  lacecap  hydrangea  that  reliably   flowers  on  new  wood  in  zone  6,  meaning  it   should  bloom  reliably  year  after  year.  Also  of   note:  the  blue  flower  color  appears   unaffected  by  the  pH  of  the  soil,  unlike  with   other  Hydrangea. Summer-‐flowering  shrubs  with  fluorescent   rosy  pink  mophead  blooms  that  will  not  turn   blue.  Glossy,  dark  green  foliage  provides  the   perfect  background  for  the  flowers.  Grows  3   feet  tall  with  as  equal  spread. Edgy™  Hearts  Hydrangea  has  dark  pinkish-‐ red  flowers,  with  heart-‐shaped  petals  that   are  emphasized  by  narrow,  white  line   margins  along  the  edges.  Edgy™  Hearts  was   developed  in  Dresden,  Germany  and  grows   to  2-‐4  feet  tall  and  wide  with  strong  stems   and  glossy  foliage. Cityline™  Mars  was  developed  in  Europe  and   its  strong  stems  can  easily  handle  the  big,   heavy,  red  and  white  variegated  flowers.  To   3'  tall  and  4'  wide. Extremely  abundant,  billowing,  dense   blooms.  Green  panicles  mature  to  white  in   summer  and  then  turn  shades  of  pink  in  fall.   A  soft  blend  of  white  and  shades  of  pink  will   show  at  the  same  time.  To  4'  x  4'  in  5  years. With  its  compact  growth  habit  of  18-‐36",   'Bombshell'  is  incredibly  well  branched  and  is   covered  with  white  flowers  from  early   summer  until  frost.  It  boasts  more  flowers   per  plant  than  any  other  Hydrangea   paniculata,  and  needs  little  if  any  pruning. This  cultivar  was  recently  introduced  from   and  named  after  the  late  Princess  Greta   Sturdza's  garden,  Le  Vasterival,  in  Normandy,   France.  Dramatic  clusters  of  starry,  white   flowers,  up  to  4"  in  diameter  are  produced   from  midsummer  until  the  first  hard  frost.   Flower  petals  are  elongated  and  wavy.

The  leathery  leaves  of  Ligularia  ‘Dragon   Wings'  conjure  up  images  of  fairy-‐tale   creatures  with  their  deeply  cut  spiky  edges.   Impressive  twelve  inch  wide  leaves  with  dark   purple  stems  form  a  clumping  habit  that  is   deer  resistant.  In  late  summer  ‘Dragon   Wings’  produces  yellow  flowers  in  slender,   dense  racemes  on  dark  purple  stems.

LEOPARD  PLANT

Elegant,  decorative,  deeply  fingered,  dark   green  leaves  of  triangular  outline  extend  up   the  nearly  black  stems,  ending  in  a  narrow   spire  of  small  clear  yellow  flowers.

'Orange  Marmalade'  carries  the  familiar   downfacing  pendant  type  flowers  of  L.   martagon  and  L.  hansonii,  but  proudly  sports   the  orange  coloration  of  it's  mother  L.   tsingtauense.  Growing  usually  to  about  3  feet   once  established,  'Orange  Marmalade'  can   easily  hit  4  feet.  June  flowering.  Light   Fragrance. Stems  reach  5'  in  normal  conditions  but  can   attain  8'  if  planted  in  rich  soil  and  left   undisturbed  for  several  years.  Flowers  are   pendant  with  slightly  recurved  petals,  intense   deep  crimson  with  white  edges  and  heavy   spotting,  highly  fragrant,  effective  in  August. Flowers  large,  bell-‐shaped,  with  recurved,   wide,  vibrant  fiery  red  petals  sprinkled  with   attractive  black  dots.  They  have  a  long   blooming  period  and  produce  12-‐20  blooms   per  stem.  Plants  to  48"  tall. notes

This  is  the  original  Woodriff  ‘Star  Gazer’   which  produces  reliably  lots  of  sweetly-‐ scented,  deep  rose-‐pink  to  crimson  blooms   with  dark  spots  and  a  white  edging  on  each   petal.  Normally  reaches  3  feet  but  at  times   can  hit  4.  July  flowering.  Fragrant. In  1989,  Piet  Schenk,  a  Dutch  Lily  Hybridizer,   bought  pollen  from  Mr.  Orekhof  of  Latvia,   who  introduced  the  first  Tango  Lily.  In  honor   of  Mr.  Orekhof,  all  new  Lilies  in  this  series  get   the  name  Tango.  The  flowers  are  enormous   and  red  with  black  markings. Very  heavy  petal  texture  on  these  flowers   insures  extra  long  bloom.  Graceful  and  dainty   in  appearance,  but  tough  as  nails  in  the   garden,  the  golden  orange  tones  of  ‘Summer   Valley’  are  extremely  color  fast  even  in  full   sun. This  flashy  oriental  lily  has  a  large  splotch  of   startling  apple-‐red  over  most  of  the  flower,   and  the  petal  edges  are  framed  in  mango-‐ yellow.  3  to  4  Feet.  Late  July  Flowering.   Fragrant. White  petals  with  red  stripes  and  maroon   spots.  Spicy  fragrance.  2-‐3'  tall.  Blooms  late   July. Lime  green,  large,  fragrant,  waxy  flowers  on   plants  to  4'  tall. A  statuesque,  sweetly-‐fragrant,  large-‐ flowered  and  easy  to  grow  species  with  thick-‐ textured,  out-‐facing  white  trumpets  in  late   summer.  For  full  sun  to  light  shade  and   ordinary  soil.  Reaches  maturity  from  seed   much  more  quickly  than  most  Lilium  species. Stems  60-‐150  cm  in  height,  dark  purple  with   white  hairs,  and  black  bulbils  in  the  leaf  axils;   stem-‐rooting.  Leaves  12-‐20  cm  long  and  1-‐2   cm  wide,  numerous,  lanceolate,  scattered,  5-‐ 7-‐veined,  the  margins  rough.  Flowers  up  to   40,  held  in  a  raceme,  turk's-‐cap,  pendulous,   12.5  cm  wide,  unscented  the  tepals  recurved   when  first  open,  gradually  spreading,  the   interior  orange  spotted  deep  purple,  the   anthers  orange-‐red  to  purple,  the  pollen   brown,  effective  from  summer  into  early   autumn. Plants  4'  tall  with  pure  white  flowers.

Penstemon  'Dark  Towers'  is  a  new  hybrid   from  the  University  of  Nebraska  that  is  tough   and  hardy  to  zone  3.  In  midsummer,  the   plants  explode  with  tall  stems  of  tubular   flowers  that  are  deep  lavender-‐rose  at  the   base  and  lighter  pink  towards  the  tips.  The   deep  wine-‐red  foliage  is  even  darker  than   Penstemon  'Husker  Red'. Plants  reach  20"  in  height;  tubular  flowers   are  rosy  purple,  borne  early  in  the  summer. Leaves  pinnately  parted,  inflorescence   narrowly  paniculate;  flowers  blue-‐purple.   Our  plants  are  late  summer  through  early  fall   blooming  (MFH). Catalog  description  applies  to  the  type  -‐  the   special  characteristics  of  'Amazone'  are  not   identified. A  cross  between  the  tall  garden  phlox  P.   paniculata  and  woodland  creeping  phlox,  P.   stolonifera.  Height  reflects  both  parents  as  it   reaches  only  12-‐15".  Spread  is  about  a  foot   reflecting  the  tall  phlox.  Many  rosy-‐pink   flowers  over  a  good  period. A  bicolor  cross  of  David  and  Shortwood  -‐   each  petal  half  white  /  half  pink  giving  a   pinwheet  effect.  24-‐30"  tall;  mildew   resistant. 'Eva  Cullum'  is  a  garden  phlox  cultivar  that   typically  grows  in  an  upright  clump  to  2-‐3'   tall.  Fragrant,  tubular  flowers  (1/2"  to  1"   diameter)  with  long  corolla  tubes  and  five  flat   petal-‐like  lobes  are  pink  with  dark  pink  eyes.   Individual  flowers  are  densely  arranged  in   large,  terminal,  pyramidal  clusters  (panicles   to  6-‐12"  long)  in  summer  atop  stiff,  upright   stems  which  seldom  need  staking.  Long  mid   to  late  summer  bloom  sometimes  extends   into  early  fall.  Narrow,  opposite,  pointed,   lance-‐shaped  leaves  (to  5"  long).  An   introduction  of  Blooms  of  Bressingham  in   England  (Eva  Cullum  was  a  former   department  head  at  Bloom's  Nursery).

Discovered  along  the  Harpeth  River  in   Tennessee,  Phlox  'Jeana'  makes  a  floriferous   4'  tall  clump,  topped  all  summer  and  well   into  fall  with  6"  flower  heads  of  0.5"  lavender   pink  flowers  that  are  attractive  to   hummingbirds  and  butterflies.  Trialed  at   Plant  Delights  since  2000  and  showing  no   sign  of  mildew. Perfectly  formed,  baby-‐pink  blooms  are   extremely  long  lasting  and  appear  over  dark   green,  very  mildew  resistant  foliage.  This   strong,  sturdy,  upright  phlox  is  30-‐36"  tall   and  24"  across. Easy  to  grow  phlox  that  loves  full  sun.   Delightful  pink  and  white  striped  flowers  will   appear  in  late  spring  and  cover  the  foliage  of   this  low-‐growing  perennial.  Grows  to  4-‐6"  tall   and  spreads  12-‐18". A  new  and  improved  Ninebark  with  neat,   compact  branching  and  fine  deeply  cut,  dark   crimson-‐red  leaves.  A  hybrid  which  combines   the  fine  textrue  and  compact  branching  of   Physocarpus  'Nana'  and  the  dark  foliage  of   DIABLO.  This  native  has  pinkish-‐white,  button   like  flowers  in  mid-‐summer.  It  is  very  showy   and  extremely  hardy. Stems  reach  5'-‐6'  in  height  with  bright  lilac-‐ pink  flowers  effective  from  July  through   September. Plant  compact,  dome  shaped,  100cm  high,   120cm  spread,  very  free-‐flowering.  Foliage   7cm  long,  3cm  wide,  dense,  fairly  small  dull   dark  green  with  paler  midrib.  Inflorescence   12cm  long,  12cm  wide,  laxly  held  with  c.30   flowers.  Corolla  1cm  long,  0.5cm  wide,  white,   sepals  and  pedicel  very  pale  greenish  yellow   (6D). Each  yellow  flower  in  the  large  clusters  are   ringed  on  their  edges  with  bright  lime  green.

notes

As  the  only  2010  AARS  winner,  Easy  Does  It™   is  unique  with  its  orangey-‐apricot  flower   color  and  scalloped  to  ruffled  petals.  The   flower  color  is  set  alight  against  disease   resistant,  glossy  green  leaves.  A  rounded,   bushy  plant  to  4'  tall. Pink  Drift®  is  low-‐growing  with  distinctive   mounded  flowers  that  reach  1½'  in  height   with  a  3'  spread.  Deep  pink  flowers  with  a   soft  faded  center  bloom  in  abundance   throughout  the  season.  Disease-‐resistant. This  upright,  bushy,  compact,  shrub  rose   hybridized  by  Meilland  of  France  typically   grows  3-‐4'  tall  and  3-‐4'  wide.  Features  large,   fragrant,  pink,  semi-‐double  blooms  with  a   white  reverse  (to  4"  across)  which  occur  in   small  clusters  on  arching  canes.  Blooms   profusely  from  late  spring  to  frost.  Semi-‐ glossy,  medium  green  foliage.  Orange  hips  in   fall  with  good  persistence  throughout  the   winter.  1991  All  America  Rose  Selection   winner. The  only  fragrant  member  in  The  Knock  Out®   Family  of  Roses.  It  has  a  slightly  more   compact  and  upright  habit  than  The  Knock   Out®  Rose  with  bright  yellow  flowers  that   fade  quickly  to  a  pastel  cream  color.  The   yellow  color  stays  more  intense  during  cooler   times  of  the  year.  The  dark,  semi-‐glossy   foliage  contrasts  nicely  with  the  bright   blooms.  To  5'  tall  by  4'  across. An  addition  to  the  Knockout™  line  of  carefree   Roses,  Blushing  Knockout™  is  as  gratifying   and  foolproof  as  its  fellows.  Individually,  the   blossoms  are  modest,  3  1/2  inch  rounds  of   light  pink  petals,  but  they  are  borne  in  such   profusion  from  early  summer  through  early   fall  that  the  impact  is  just  what  the  name   claims.  As  flowers  mature,  the  color  fades  to   shell  pink,  adding  depth  to  the  display.  Plants   combine  an  exceptional  resistance  to   blackspot  and  mildew  with  outstanding   winter  hardiness,  and  because  the  petals  fall   from  the  flowers  as  they  fade,  this  rose   doesn't  need  deadheading.

This  flame  red  seedling  of  the  famous  Knock   Out®  has  a  phenomenal  resistance  to  the   dreaded  black  spot  like  its  father.  But,  unlike   Dad,  it  is  also  completely  resistant  to   powdery  mildew  and  has  a  much  higher  level   of  tolerance  to  downy  as  well.  Rounded,   bushy,  fast-‐to-‐flower  and  nearly  always  in   color,  3.5'  -‐  4'  tall. Large  plants  reach  6'  to  7'  in  height,  with  a   30"  spread,  and  require  staking  at  a  height  of   18"  to  22".  Flowers  are  bright  yellow  with  a   central  raised  cone;  blonde  seed  heads  are  of   interest  after  petals  fall. Strong  stems  hold  rich  deep  royal  crimson   spikes.  Very  long  blooming. A  selection  of  this  North  American  native   with  showy  sky  blue  flower  spikes  to  4'  in  late   summer  through  fall.  It  differs  from  the   species  in  having  hairy  stems,  larger  flowers   than  the  species  and  is  more  robust.  ‘Nekan’   (abbreviation  of  Nebraska  and  Kansas)  is  a   seed  strain  that  was  found  growing  in  the   wild  in  an  area  north  of  Lincoln,  Nebraska.  It   features  whorls  of  2-‐lipped,  sky  blue  flowers   in  spikes  atop  stiff  stems  with  linear  grayish-‐ green  leaves.  H:  24-‐48"  W:  24-‐36" 18"  x  24"  wide.  The  quilted  gray  foliage  is  an   attractive  backdrop  to  the  spikes  of  pure  blue   flowers.  Germander  Sage  loves  sun  and  heat   and  should  be  planted  in  a  loamy,  well-‐ drained  soil.  It  blooms  most  heavily  in  early   summer  and  again  in  the  fall.  The  plant   spreads  by  underground  roots  to  form   impressive  mounding  specimens.  Native  of   the  Sierra  Madre  Oriental  mountains  of   Mexico.

Perennial  herb  25-‐100cm.  Stems  erect,   simple  or  occasionally  branched.  Leaves  very   variable  depending  on  habitat,  from  5x3cm   to  30x23cm,  mostly  basal,  ovate  or  lyrate   with  larger  terminal  segments  and  small   laterals,  cordate  at  base,  serrate  or  crenate,   minutely  glandular-‐strigose,  long-‐petiolate.   Verticillasters  4-‐8-‐flowered,  calyx  ovate-‐ campanulate,  8-‐12mm,  teeth  rather  spinose,   glandular-‐pilose;  corolla  20-‐30mm,  violet-‐ blue  to  pinkish-‐magenta,  with  white  or   yellow  markings  particularly  on  lower  lip,   tube  curved  upwards,  exserted,  upper  lip   deeply  bifid,  falcate.  Nutlets  2mm,  rounded-‐ trigonous. Plants  are  25"  tall  with  wonderful  lilac-‐pink   flower  spikes  June-‐Aug. Plants  reach  18"  in  flower  and  produce  spikes   of  deep  purple  flowers.  Best  with  moisture   and  half-‐shade. BLACK  LACE™  is  a  cultivar  of  European   elderberry.  It  is  particularly  noted  for  its   deeply  cut  dark  purple  foliage,  its  lemon-‐ scented,  pink  flowers  and  its  dark  blackish-‐ red  elderberries.  It  is  a  large,  upright,   deciduous  shrub  that  typically  matures  to  6-‐ 8’  tall.  It  was  developed  in  England  in  a   somewhat  complex  10-‐year  breeding   program  commenced  in  1988.  Compound   pinnate  leaves  are  dark  purple  and  generally   retain  that  color  throughout  most  of  the   growing  season.  Leaflets  are  deeply  cut.   Young  stems  are  also  purple,  with  older   branches  being  a  rough,  gray-‐brown.  Tiny   pink  flowers  appear  in  large  flattened  cymes,   to  10”  across,  in  June.  Flowers  emit  a  lemony   aroma.  Flowers  give  way  to  clusters  of  black   elderberry  fruits  in  late  summer.  Fruits  are   attractive  to  wildlife. Dark  blue  flowers  clustered  on  6"-‐8"  stems;   vigorous  form  of  S.  siberica. Short  4"  tall  plants  with  soft  rose  red  flowers   and  bronze-‐red  leaves  that  persist  all  season.

Clump-‐forming  rather  than  stoloniferous,   reaching  3'-‐4'  in  height,  producing  a  compact   mound  of  graceful  arching  branches.  The   golden-‐yellow  flowers  are  effective  in   autumn.  Discovered  in  its  typical  wet  coastal   savannah  habitat  by  Ken  Moore  of  the  North   Carolina  Botanical  Garden  in  1970,  the   original  plant  was  relocated  to  the  Botanical   Garden  and  placed  in  the  native  plant   display.  The  Botanical  Garden  asked  Niche   Gardens  to  begin  propagating  this  plant  in   1992  for  introduction  in  1993.  At  Plantations   this  plant  has  proven  to  have  a  weakly   rhizomatous  habit. Perennial  herb  reaching  2'  in  height;  leaves   ovate,  to  4"  long,  sessile;  flowers  red  outside,   yellow  inside,  to  2"  long. Plants  to  5'  tall  with  nearly  black  stems,   contrasting  green  leaves  and  topped  by  fluffy   lavender  flowers  in  large  flat-‐  topped   corymbs. Discovered  as  a  garden  seedling  between  T.   elegans  and  T.  delavayi  by  French  Heuchera   breeder,  Thierry  Delabroye,  this  towering   floriferous  Meadow  Rue  is  indeed  splendid.   Heaven  bound  and  steadfast,  9  ft.  tall,   crimson  tinted  stalks,  clothed  with  lacy   grayish  green  fernlike  foliage,  have  a  willowy   architectural  appeal.  Myriad  lavender-‐pink   flowers,  centered  by  cream-‐colored  stamens,   compose  a  massive,  yet  sprightly  pastel   cloud,  which  envelopes  the  entire  upper  3  ft.   of  each  impressive  plant  nearly  all  summer   long.  Blooms  late  June–September.  5'–9'  high   x  2'  wide. Plants  reach  6'-‐8'  in  height  and  produce   sprays  of  lavender  flowers  in  summer.  **  I   wonder  if  there  is  a  distinct  cultivar  'Lavender   Mist'  or  if  this  is  just  a  common  name  that   over  time  has  been  incorrectly  raised  to   cultivar  status.  I  can  find  no  manuals  that   describe  this  cultivar,  only  nursery  catalogs,   and  their  descriptionsw  do  not  differ  from   that  of  the  species. Plants  reach  10'  in  height  and  3'  in  width   developing  an  upright  pyramidal  form  with   golden  foliage.

Red  petals  edged  with  chartreuse;  purple   base;  a  great  grower  and  perennializer;  8"-‐ 10"  tall;  blooms  mid  spring. Stems  5-‐15cm  tall,  leaves  12cm  long,  1.5cm   wide,  3  to  7,  closely  set,  lanceolate,  recurved,   bright  green,  glabrous,  the  margins  claret,   often  ciliate.  Flowers  4-‐15,  broadly  star-‐ shaped,  fragrant,  the  outer  tepals  white  on   the  outside,  shading  to  purple  and  yellow  at   the  base,  the  inner  tepals  often  yellow  at  the   base. This  plant  features  a  compact  but  bushy   habit.  Its  silvery  pink  flowers  are  enlivened  by   darker  anthers  (pollen  sacs)  projecting  out   for  the  benefit  of  visiting  insects.  The  effect  is   pleasing  and  since  'Fairytale'  retains  its   foliage  right  down  to  the  soil,  it  always  looks   smart.

SPEEDWELL

This  petite  seedling  of  ‘Giles  van  Hees’  brings   a  much  softer  color  palette  to  the  garden   with  its  pure  baby  pink  flower  spikes.  They   stand  at  attention  atop  the  very  short  and   compact  (6"),  bushy  mound  of  healthy  green   foliage  from  mid  through  late  summer.

DWARF  GOLDEN  SPEEDWELL

Low  growing,  this  has  golden  leaves  that  are   brightest  in  sunlight.  Spreading  to  a  foot  or   more  wide  it  makes  an  attractive  ground   cover.  In  late  spring  to  early  summer  6"  tall   stems  of  pale,  lavender-‐blue  flowers  open.   When  the  main  flush  of  blossoms  is  done  a   lighter,  intermittent  follow-‐up  of  flowers  may   continue  through  the  rest  of  summer.  The   golden  leaves  are  noted  for  their  resistence   to  sun  scorch  in  hot  climates.  When  grown  in   heavier  shade  the  leaves  turn  more  green.
