notes This  selection  produces  a  bouquet  of  flowers  that   open  intense  lemon  yellow,  then  lighten  to  pastel   yellow.   Paprika'  is  a  spreading,  mat-‐forming  yarrow   cultivar  which  is  noted  for  its  fern-‐like,  aromatic,   medium  green  foliage  and  its  tiny,  long-‐lasting,   dusty-‐red  flowers  with  yellow  centers. Plant  100cm  tall,  135cm  spread.  Dense,  erect  to   very  slightly  arching,  much  branched.  Flower   spike  16.5cm  long,  composed  of  very  densely   packed  clusters. Foliage  is  extremely  slender  essentially   threadlike;  flowers  are  sky-‐blue  emerging  in  May;   fall  foliage  an  excellent  golden-‐yellow. Plants  notable  for  the  dark  purple  color  on  the   emerging  stems,  which  contrasts  with  the  leaves.   The  leaves  are  arranged  in  a  semicircle  on  the   upper  stems. Waxy,  almost  lustrous  dark  green  foliage  turns   brilliant  scarlet  in  fall;  flowers  are  more  abundant   than  on  the  type,  and  red  fruit  is  glossier. The  emerging  foliage  is  lightly  touched  with   purple,  and  the  deep  reddish  purple  flowers   crowd  into  tidily  spherical  inflorescences,  several   per  stem.   Purple-‐pink  flowers  (lobes  to  1.2cm).  Fruit   sometimes  spiny.   A  very  special  seed  strain  with  deep  red-‐orange   flowers  and  relatively  dark  foliage. Flowers  are  1"  across,  violet-‐blue,  held  in  cone-‐ shaped  clusters. Plants  36"  tall,  24"  wide,  with  bluish-‐purple   flowers  in  fall;  foliage  has  a  minty  fragrance  when   crushed.

Vivid  violet-‐lavender  buds  unfurl  to  periwinkle,   lupinelike  flowers  with  contrasting  butter-‐cream   keels. Its  lupinelike  flowers  in  a  smokey  violet  purple,   highlighted  by  a  lemon-‐yellow  keel  are  produced   in  erect  racemes  that  extend  beyond  the  foliage,   creating  an  incredible  floral  display. Petals  white,  wing  and  keel  petals  1.6-‐2  cm  long;   legume  pendulous,  blackish. Blue-‐green  foliage,  topped  in  late  spring  with  18"   spikes  of  yellow  flowers. To  4'  tall  with  creamy  yellow  flowers.   Plants  reach  18"  in  height  and  width;  leaves  are   blue-‐green,  rounded;  yellow  flowers  are  carried   in  12-‐15"  long  spikes  in  late  April. Deep,  double  golden-‐yellow  flowers  are  striking   against  dark  green  foliage  that  is  more  robust   than  the  species.  Flowers  have  twice  as  many   petals  as  the  native  species  and  last  longer  in  the   landscape. New  foliage  is  tinged  bronze  and  matures  to  a   very  dark  green;  stems  reddish;  flowers  pink,   effective  in  late  summer. Dreamy  yellow  to  soft  yellow,  fragrant  flowers   bloom  all  summer  long. Soft  peach  petals  with  a  rose  halo  around  the   cone  -‐  5"  blooms  and  dark  stems  adorn  this   robust,  fragrant  echinacea. Deep  golden-‐yellow  petals  with  an  orange  cone.   Heavily  branched  and  overlapping  petals. This  deep,  golden  yellow  Echinacea  has  melting   cheddar  blooms  that  lighten  slightly  after  weeks   of  heat.  Blooms  all  summer  from  well  branched   stems.   Plant  to  1m  in  height,  ray  flowers  purple. Features  large,  daisy-‐like  flowers  with  drooping   yellow  to  orange-‐yellow  petals  and  very  large,   coppery-‐brown  to  chocolate-‐brown  central   cones.  Best  flower  display  is  mid-‐June  to  mid-‐July. Ray  flowers  in  the  greyed-‐purple  group,  cone  is   deep  red  or  greyed  orange.  Flowering  from  mid   July. Very  large  rose  pink  flowers  with  wine  red  stems   and  petioles.

This  cross  of  E.  purpurea  x  paradoxa  makes  a  2'   tall  x  2'  wide  clump,  topped  in  summer  with  4"   fragrant  buttery  yellow  flowers. Plants  have  fuchsia  colored  flowers  and  bright   green  foliage.  Height  30-‐36"  and  spread  1-‐2'. Discovered  growing  on  the  grounds  of  Conard-‐ Pyle  in  Pennsylvania,  this  mutation  of  the  popular   Joe  Pye  Weed  grows  only  4  feet  tall.  Selected  by   Steve  Lighty  .     Dark  purple  flower  heads  are  carried  on  6'  to  8'   tall,  uniformly  purple  stems. Stem  green,  very  strongly  dark  purplish  red,  fine   longitudinal  black  dashes,  especially  noticeable   on  green  areas.  Leaves  serrated,  dark  green.   Flowers  dusky  pink.   A  Siberian  species,  with  large  palmate  leaves  and   huge,  fluffy  corymbs  of  fragrant  pinkish-‐white  to   white  flowers. Usually  considered  the  pinkest  of  the  many   forms.  Plants  6-‐8'  tall,  4'  wide,  summer  blooming.   Fragrant  deep  pink  flowers  in  12"  clusters  in  July   and  early  August.   Plants  4'  tall,  2'  wide;  tough,  wiry  with  reddish,   sparsely-‐leaved  stems,  which  branch  freely;   flowers  small,  white  with  reddish  calyces  which   persist  after  the  petals  have  dropped;  summer   blooming;  dainty  and  refined. Plants  reach  about  3.5';  flowers  are  yellow-‐ orange  effective  in  late  summer. Has  delightful  brown  spherical  cones  which  are   surrounded  by  a  flowing  fringe  of  bright  yellow-‐ reflexed  petals  looking  like  hundreds  of  yellow-‐ skirted  dancers  in  motion.  The  foliage  is  compact   and  bushy.  Tolerant  of  a  wide  variety  of   conditions. Plants  flower  for  six  to  eight  weeks  in  mid  to  late   summer.  Yellow  petals  are  edged  with  bright   orange-‐red  aging  to  clear  red  edged  in  gold,  all   surrounding  deep  chestnut  cones.

This  selection  has  blue-‐green  foliage  that  turns  a   deeper  shade  of  wine-‐purple  beginning  in  early   summer. Plants  reach  5'  in  height;  habit  is  strongly  erect;   foliage  is  wide,  olive-‐green;  inflorescences  are   narrow,  and  strongly  erect. ‘Prairie  Fire’  features  tight,  upright  clumps  of   bluish  stems  and  slender  burgundy  foliage,  all   topped  with  pink-‐tinted  flowers  in  late  summer.   Long  before  fall,  the  foliage  turns  fiery  red,   creating  a  flame  of  color. Upright  specimen  emerging  with  blue-‐grey  foliage   that  begins  taking  on  a  burgundy-‐red  hue  as  early   as  mid-‐summer.  The  foliage  color  intensifies  as   the  season  progresses,  serving  as  a  nice  foil  when   the  clumps  are  topped  with  airy  4'  tall  flower   spikes  in  late  summer  which  dry  and  last  well  into   the  winter. Neat  compact  clump  of  foliage  that  has  a  dark   purple  cast  on  its  tips  throughout  the  summer;  in   fall  the  foliage  turns  dark  black-‐purple. Panicum  'Thundercloud'  is  a  very  large   switchgrass  that  grows  to  a  height  of  7-‐8'  and  5'   across  when  mature.  The  blue  green  foliage   remains  strictly  upright  and  doesn't  flop  over  in   windy,  rainy  conditions.  In  late  summer,  a   plethora  of  pinkish-‐tan,  airy  panicles  are   produced  just  above  the  foliage. Plants  4'  to  5'  in  height;  foliage  reddish-‐brown  in   fall.  'Foxtrot'  makes  a  large,  upright,  4'  wide  x  5'  tall   clump,  topped  in  mid  summer  with  5'  tall  tan   plumes. Plants  reach  24"  in  height;  foliage  assumes  russet-‐ red  tints  in  fall. This  selection  of  Little  Bluestem  has  dark  blue  to   burgundy  foliage  during  the  summer,  turning   purple,  violet  and  finally  red  in  the  fall.   This  selection  of  Little  Bluestem,  released  by   Jelitto  Seed  of  Germany,  has  grayish-‐blue  foliage   and  a  sturdy,  upright  growth  habit.  ‘Prairie  Blues’   is  an  eye  catching  grass  in  the  fall  garden,  where   it  turns  a  pleasing  purple  with  hints  of  orange-‐ red. Inflorescence  to  100  cm  long,  lax,  grayish  or   whitish. A  densely  tufted  narrowly  upright  perennial   reaching  2'  in  height;  infloresence  fragrant,  gray-‐ green,  narrowly  pyramidal,  the  branches  erect  or   ascending,  finally  spreading,  bearing  dark  green   spikelets  towards  their  tips,  effective  in  late   summer.
