for this year’s shirt: It is a black T-shirt with “SUNY Oneonta” in bold type, as well as “School of Economics and Business” lightly written underneath it in white. The SAC plans to organize an event or date in which all the faculty and students can show solidarity and wear the shirt at the same time. Around 150 shirts were sold, which is an amazing turnout of support for the School of Economics and Business and a great way to promote the school.

Beta Gamma Sigma and Student Advisory Council Members Amanda Barcia, Connor Day, Andrew Jensen, and Shane Irwin were featured on AllOtsego.com.

SUNY OnMark This spring, SUNY OnMark took 36 students to New Orleans, Louisiana to attend the American Marketing Association’s (AMA) International Collegiate Conference. The conference took place from March 17th-March 19th, and included educational forums, networking events, business simulations and many competitions. Our members received the opportunity to participate in all events and we had three members compete in a new event this year called the Poster Competition. Anthony Santo, Kieran Stack and Brian Arkin worked throughout the semester with Dr. Chien Wei Lin to produce a marketing competition poster. SUNY OnMark is able to attend this conference every year with the help of Dr. Stephen Walsh and the dedicated E-board. This year the club was lucky to also have Dr. Lin join them for the conference. Every year, Dr. Walsh takes OnMark to New Orleans to compete, and this year he was recognized for his dedication for over 25 years in AMA. Dr. Walsh received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Marketing Association as an Advisor for OnMark. OnMark was once again recognized in the top 10 clubs in AMA, and finished 7th with their Annual Report. The chapter has been in the top 25 since 1998, the top four twice, and finished #2 in 2001. In the competition, each school is judged on the Annual Report that they submit, which compiles every fundraiser, membership drive, community service event and other activities that the club participates in throughout the year. OnMark will continue to strive and pursue becoming one of the best chapters within AMA as they grow as an organization. OnMark received the club of year award from SUNY Oneonta from 2014-2015 and looks to continue that strong brand reputation at SUNY Oneonta and AMA in the future.

Students Present Research to College Foundation Board

On April 29th, two teams of students from Dr. Kai Chen’s Portfolio Management class presented an analysis of the College’s portfolio of mutual funds to members of the College Foundation Board. The research projects aimed to analyze the College’s portfolio of mutual funds and to make suggestions for improvement. The teams made use of Modern Portfolio Theory, using the volatility and returns of individual funds to recreate the fund portfolio and run various tests. Specifically, they used mean-variance portfolio optimization to re-weight the assets in the portfolio so as to attain the theoretically highest return-per-risk in their models. Considerable analysis was presented including stress-testing several portfolios of assets through a simulated recession, performing analysis on the current allocation of mutual funds in the portfolio, calculating Jensen’s Alpha using regression models, and finally making suggestions to the Board on whether to add or remove assets from the portfolio. Students involved in the project were Ben Merrill, Mike Spinelli, Kathryn White, Eric Anderson, Ralph Jusi, Robert Cameron, Chris Degennaro, and Andrew Crawford.

Fed Challenge Dinner On Tuesday, May 3rd, the College Fed Challenge team took their coach Dr. Ring out to dinner at Autumn Cafe to celebrate a great career and his retirement. The entire group bought ‘Fed Challenge Team’ hats for Dr. Ring and themselves as a special way for him to remember his last year at SUNY Oneonta. Dr. Ring has impacted his students greatly throughout his career and is sure to be missed next year. The College Fed Challenge Team and SEB wish Dr. Ring

Page 4 all the best in his retirement.

Updated Fed Challenge Team Forecast In the fall semester, the Federal Reserve Challenge Team presented their predictions for the US economy to judges at the New York Fed. This spring, the group reconvened to update their previous forecast. Before the Federal Reserve raised rates in December of 2015, the Team predicted GDP would grow by 2.5%, but given the current data, the Team has revised their expectations downward to a growth rate of 2%. Furthermore, before the rate hike, the team predicted that the unemployment rate will decrease to 4.7%, but it is now expected to remain at or around 5%.

Final BGS Meeting of the Academic Year With the spring semester coming to an end, the BGS faculty advisors and E-board had their final meeting of the 2015-2016 school year. The faculty advisors of Beta Gamma Sigma presented the first E-Board of the SUNY Oneonta chapter with name-engraved BGS plaques as a way to commemorate all the great strides that our chapter has made these past two semesters with the new addition of student leadership. The Beta Gamma Sigma E-board would like to thank our advisors Dean Yen, Dr. Buchan, Dr. Flynn, and Dr. Durkin for their leadership and guidance throughout this entire year. Without their help we could have never accomplished all that we did. We look forward to seeing what is next for Beta Gamma Sigma at SUNY Oneonta.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF SAC It has been another strong semester for the School of Economics and Business (SEB) at SUNY Oneonta! The SEB continues to grow and thrive from semester to semester. This newly formed school is building a powerful name for itself on campus. The purpose of generating these newsletters each semester is to highlight the plentiful amount of opportunities that exist in the SEB at SUNY Oneonta! Students within the SEB are presented with multiple chances to hear from established alumni visitors within fields relevant to their studies, to dedicate their time toward helping the campus and community of Oneonta, and to get involved in SEB oriented clubs, organizations, and honor societies. The Student Advisory Council (SAC) is one of the leading organizations that contribute to the SEB’s continued success. We aim to make opportunities readily available for all students within the SEB through our four sub-committees: Community Service, Student Engagement and Communication, Promotion and Innovation, and Finance and Accountability. I must acknowledge my Vice Presidents and Treasurer; Shane Irwin, Meaghan Kristol, and Stephanie Renner, the members of the SAC, our Dean David Yen, and the SAC’s faculty advisors; Dr. Paul Bauer, Professor Charlene Foley-Deno, Dr. Philip Sirianni, and Dr. Trang Tran who work tirelessly to make these opportunities possible.
