We are proud to participate in over more than 20 statewide events this year, led by some of the most knowledgeable organic farmers, gardeners, and researchers in New York. Farmer-to-farmer education is the backbone of our organization, so we would like to extend a hearty “thank you” to all of our generous field day hosts who share their time and knowledge and welcome us onto their farms.

We hope that you’ll take advantage of some of these invaluable opportunities to see new farms, learn about new methods, and network with others around the state. 1. SOWING THE FUTURE OF ORGANIC WHEAT RESEARCH IN THE NORTHEAST Friday, June 10th, 12:30–6:30pm

Location: The Love Lab at Cornell University, 126 Medicago Drive, Ithaca, NY 14850 (Tompkins County) This event celebrates the past, present, and future of organic wheat improvement in the Northeast. Researchers will summarize a decade of variety trial results from the field, bakery, mill, and taste buds. After touring Cornell’s organic wheat breeding nurseries, participants can help set needs and priorities for future small grain improvement in the region. The event will include tastings of varietal-specific products made by local bakers, chefs, and brewers. Registration is $15/attendee. 2. REDUCE FLY PRESSURE ON YOUR DAIRY Wednesday June 22nd, 10:00am–2:30pm Location: Morse Farm, 4422 Dixon Rd, Mannsville, NY 13661 (Jefferson County) Sick of those pesky flies? Join NOFA-NY, Organic Valley and Spalding Labs to learn how to reduce fly pressure on your farm. Doug Morse will host the day's event and provide a tour of his dairy system. The Fly Guys at Cornell University, with the NYS Integrated Pest Management Program at the NYS Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, will explain how to develop a fly control program, and Spalding Labs will provide information on tools to reduce fly pressure. Doug Morse and his family manage a grass-based dairy on a bedded pack system. Registration cost is $15/person or $25/farm. This event is cosponsored by NOFA-NY, Organic Valley and Spalding Labs. WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE: Lady Farmers of Long Island Wednesday July 6th, 6:30–8:30pm Location: Amber Waves Farm, 375 Main St, Amagansett, NY 11930 (Suffolk County) Join Amanda and Katie of Amber Waves for an evening of Celebrating Women in Agriculture. Learn how they founded a CSA, pioneered the Amagansett Wheat Project in 2009, and continue to provide outstanding education, bread shares, and a Food-to-Pantry project. Find your way to the far east end of the island to celebrate the true definition of women’s work! Learn more about NOFA-NY’s Beginning Farmer Project and the On-Farm Skills Development Guide. DEVELOPING A DIVERSIFIED HORSE-POWERED FARM Saturday, July 9th, 1:00–4:00pm Location: Greyrock Farm, 6100 East Lake Rd, Cazenovia, NY 13035 (Madison County) Matt Volz is developing a highly diversified, horse-powered farm that includes a raw milk dairy, and meat and vegetable production. Join him for a tour of Greyrock Farm and discussion of how to grow a farm with multiple complementary enterprises and handle the management, production and business challenges on the diversified farm. LONG-TERM HIGH TUNNEL SOIL HEALTH AND NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT FOR TOMATO PRODUCTION Thursday, July 14th, 6:00–8:00pm Location: Obercreek Farm, 59 Marlorville Rd, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590 (Dutchess County) Come and learn how to manage your high tunnel for longterm success by maintaining and improving soil health and fertility, controlling pests and disease, and ensuring profitable yields and excellent quality. We’ll dig into these topics with a focus on tomato production.

MOVING INTO WHOLESALE MARKETS FOR SMALL AND MID-SIZED FARMS Wednesday, July 20th, 4:00–6:00pm Location: Mainstreet Farms’ Cortland Farm, 3320 State Rt 215, Cortland, NY 13045 (Cortland County) Join us at Mainstreet Farms in Cortland, NY to examine the potential for moving into wholesale markets. Cornell’s Crystal Stewart will demonstrate the fundamentals for crossing over into wholesale markets, from record keeping to timing crops. One of Mainstreet Farms’ primary objectives is to bring healthy, local food to the community. We will take a look at how Mainstreet Farms utilizes education and partners with the community to create a strong local food system. Mainstreet Farms was founded by Allan Gandelman in 2011, and is dedicated to sustainable agriculture and local food security. They provide food to local schools, grocery stores, restaurants, local farm markets and CSA members all over Central NY. Registration fees are $15/person or $25 for two or more people/farm. ORGANIC TRANSITION—CERTIFICATION AND GROWING PRACTICES: It’s More Than Input Substitution Wednesday, July 20th, 4:00–7:00pm

Location: Fishkill Farms, 9 Fishkill Farm Rd, Hopewell Junction, NY 12533 (Dutchess County) Fishkill Farms’ crops include tree fruit, berries, vegetables and eggs. Josh Morgenthau will lead a tour and discuss the challenges in transitioning to organic, including changes in growing practices, creation of buffer zones, and management. Caitlyn Reilly of NOFA-NY Certified Organic LLC will discuss the nuts and bolts of organic certification and answer any questions. Risk management and crop/whole farm insurance programs will also be discussed. Fishkill Farms is an historic apple orchard that has been in the Morgenthau family for nearly 100 years. After leasing the farm www.nofany.org

for a number of years, Robert and Josh Morgenthau reclaimed the farm in 2007. Fishkill Farms has grown from a conventionally farmed apple orchard into a diversified, ecological farm with new orchards and infrastructures. The mission of the farm has been to marry its historic identity as a family “u-pick” apple orchard with the Farms team’s shared goals of diversification and environmental stewardship through sustainable farming methods. 8. KINGBIRD FARM OPEN HOUSE Sunday, July 24th, 1:00–4:00pm Location: Kingbird Farm, 9398 West Creek Rd, Berkshire, NY 13736 (Tioga County) Please join us to celebrate 20 years of success! Michael, Karma and Rosemary Glos will share their story of how they organically manage pork, chicken, eggs, culinary herbs, and produce while utilizing horses for field work. The farm will be open for exploration, shopping, and enjoyment from 1:00–4:00pm, with a guided farm tour at 2:00pm. Kingbird Farm produces a diverse array of certified, organically raised meats, produce, and value-added items.

Obercreek Farm is a certified organic farm located in the hamlet of Hughsonville and has been in production since 2013. They grow diversified vegetables for their CSA, wholesale accounts in the Hudson Valley and New York City, farmers’ markets, and for an onsite farm stand. When the growing season ends, they keep the farm alive by growing specialty baby greens in four passive solar greenhouses. All vegetables and herbs are Certified Organic. An additional 6 acres will go into production in 2016, making a total of 14 acres in rotation throughout the main growing season.

9. CREATING AN EDIBLE FOREST GARDEN Saturday, July 30th, 12:45–4:00pm Location: Cross Island Farms, 44301 Cross Island Rd, Wellesley Island, NY 13640 (Jefferson County) Over the past three seasons, Dani Baker, co-owner of Cross Island Farms, has developed one acre of her certified organic farm as a multi-functional edible forest garden incorporating numerous permaculture principles and practices. Join her for a walk-through and introduction to over 300 perennial cultivars of fruits, nuts, berries, and other edibles in seven permaculture layers with a variety of supportive plants integrated into the landscape. Attendees will taste fruits, flowers, greens and herbs in season, and go home with a potted plant to add to their own edible garden. Entering its second decade, Cross Island Farms’ diversified, certified organic operation includes season extension hoop houses, vegetable gardens, heritage breed hogs and beef cattle, meat goats, ducks, chickens and turkeys, renewable wind and solar power, and a state-of-the-art weather station. 10. HIGH TUNNEL PEST AND DISEASE MANAGEMENT Tuesday, August 2nd, 4:30–7:30pm

Location: Fellenz Family Farm, 1919 Lester Rd, Phelps, NY 14532 (Ontario County) How can you manage your tunnel to limit losses due to pests and disease? This field day will start with identification of common high tunnel pests and diseases and effective organic control strategies, including spraying. Andy Fellenz, with support from NE SARE, has developed and will demonstrate a boom-style high tunnel sprayer, as well as discuss the proper use of backpack and other relatively low pressure, low flow single-tip sprayers. Variety selection, rotation, cultural practices and spraying all have a place in the overall farm strategy. Fellenz Family Farm received its certification for growing organic vegetables and fruits in Phelps, NY in 2005, and has been growing in high tunnels for more than 10 years.

Location: Westwind Orchard, 215 Lower Whitfield Rd, Accord, NY 12404 (Ulster County) Managing orchard fertility is about more than just fertilizer. Your orchard soil is a giant digestive engine, chewing up carbon, nitrogen, and minerals to feed not only your trees but the soil food web. This workshop will cover the basics of understanding your soil and what you can do to improve the soil’s health, biology, and overall vitality to grow better fruit. In short, you’ll leave knowing everything you should know to manage your soils for better crop productivity. Feel free to bring soil or leaf tissue samples for analysis. Westwind Orchard is a historic pick-your-own orchard certified organic since 2008. Westwind is also a Holistic Community Orchard that uses only ecologically-sensitive products to help grow healthier soil, trees, fruits and vegetables.

11. HORSE-POWERED HAYMAKING DEMONSTRATION Saturday & Sunday, August 6th & 7th, 9:00am– 4:00pm Saturday & 10:00am–3:00pm Sunday Location: Northland Sheep Dairy, 3501 Hoxie Gorge, Freetown Rd, Marathon, NY 13803 (Cortland County) This two-day event will focus on making hay with horses. Day one is a hands-on mowing workshop. This workshop will be limited to six people, and participants will learn how to run horse-drawn mowers. Basic teamster skills are required. Day two is a haymaking demonstration. We will demonstrate tools used in the production of high quality hay made with draft animal power, focusing on second cutting hay made from grazing land. Facilitators: Donn Hewes and Emily Landeck. Northland Sheep Dairy a 100% grass-fed seasonal sheep dairy powered by draft horses and mules and some committed hardworking farmers in Marathon, NY. Camping available Friday and Saturday night, please bring your own food for event. Saturday fee $65, Sunday activities are free and open to the public, donations will be accepted. 13. REDUCED TILLAGE IN VEGETABLES Wednesday, August 17th, 4:00–7:00pm Location: Freeville Organic Research Farm at the HC Thompson Vegetable Research Farm, 133 Fall Creek Rd, Freeville, NY (Tompkins County) Join the Cornell Reduced Tillage Team for this in-depth field study of strategies to improve soil health in organic vegetables. Our field tour will highlight current research on integrating cover crops and reducing tillage for farms at multiple scales. We will demonstrate strip tillage for small-scale farmers and review impacts of new mulching and covering cropping techniques on weeds and crops. We will also have a field demonstration of measuring soil health impacts after different practices. Learn more about how these practices may impact pest or disease challenges, such as Swede Midge. Freeville Organic Research Farm is Cornell’s home for organic vegetable research. The farm hosts tillage trials and vegetable breeding efforts. This is a free event. 14. SEE CARBON FARMING IN ACTION! Tuesday, August 23rd, 1:00–4:00pm Location: Four Winds Farm, 158 Marabac Rd, Gardiner, NY 12525 (Ulster County) To keep the earth’s average temperature from rising less than 2 degrees, reducing emissions from fossil fuels is not enough. We have to take carbon out of the air—and where

better to put it than in the soil where it serves as organic matter, feeds our crops, holds moisture and reduces runoff ? Tour a NOFA-NY-certified farm that for 20 years has been practicing techniques that keep carbon in the soil by eliminating tillage. Come to learn from the Four Winds farmers, Jay and Polly Armour, and to share your best ideas for ways that organic practices can mitigate climate change. 15. THE 22 ANNUAL BUCKWHEAT FIELD DAY Wednesday, August 24th, 1:00–3:00pm Location: Jones’ Farm, 2943 Rt 96A, Interlaken, NY 14874 (Seneca County) David Jones has many decades of experience raising buckwheat. He has one of the most advanced buckwheat operations going, typically raising 100 acres or so each year. David has developed ways to get consistently good yields and high seed quality. This field day will include ideas on fertility management, pollinators, and harvesting technique. This field day is free and open to the public. NOFA-NY is cosponsoring this event with Cornell University, Birkett Mills and Seedway Inc.

16. MARKETING A DIVERSE FARM FROM PRICING TO PRODUCTION Wednesday, August 24th, 3:00–6:00pm Location: Lakestone Family Farm, 1089 Co Rd 28, Shortsville, NY 14548 (Ontario County) Take a walk with Dennis Lepel at Lakestone Family Farm as we take a look at how he markets his diverse farm from production to pricing. Dennis grows a wide variety of vegetables, produces pasture-raised eggs and chickens which he markets through local farm markets and his CSA. His pasture-raised broilers are processed on-site, and sold as whole birds and as a variety of prepackaged cuts to maximize profitability. Joining us will be John Wilhelm from the BCS shop from Hector, NY, who will demonstrate some BCS attachments that may be just what a farm needs to increase efficiencies. Lakestone Family Farm is located on the historic Harriet Bardbury estate in Farmington, NY. Lakestone has been certified organic by NOFA-NY since 2011.

17. GRASS-BASED MILK PRODUCTION! Wednesday, August 31st, 10:00am–2:30pm Location: Yoder Farm, 4841 Nelson Rd, Cazenovia NY 13035 (Madison County) NOFA-NY and Organic Valley invite you to learn how to make milk with a no-grain feed ration. Our host Mark Yoder will provide a tour of his pasture setup, and share his insights on maintaining milk production and animal health in a grass-fed dairy production system. Organic Valley Ruminant Nutritionist Silvia Abel-Caines will share her research and practical experience on how to balance high-forage diets for optimal animal health, milk production and milk nutritional profi le. Our hosts Rob and Pam Moore will share their grass-based management system and provide a tour of their farm. Organic Valley Ruminant Nutritionist Silvia Abel-Caines will discuss nutritional requirements in grassbased dairy systems to maintain energy levels to support reproduction and to maintain milk production. 19. DIVERSIFY YOUR MARKETING: Managing Grass Dairy and Meeting Consumer Needs Monday, September 12th, 10:30am–2:30pm Location: Sunny Cove Farm, 1444 Randolph Rd, Alfred Station, NY 14803 (Allegany County) NOFA-NY welcomes you to join us at Sunny Cove Farm for a two-part field day to learn about marketing your farm products. The morning program will address managing a grassbased dairy, and include a tour of pastures and discussion on maintaining a balanced diet to promote animal health and quality milk production. Lauren Tonti from NOFA-NY Certified Organic LLC will provide information on transitioning to organic certification and grass milk certification. Fay Benson with the NY Crop Insurance Education Team Crop will provide crop insurance information on supporting risk management. In the afternoon, Jerry Snyder will discuss meeting market demands with the products offered by the family farm, as well as share how his farm has expanded its offerings to accommodate generational transfer. Jerry and Dotty Snyder manage a diverse dairy farm offering many products including organic grass fed milk, apples, maple syrup and organic grass-fed beef. Their farm has been certified organic since 2002.

20. CREATING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS ON WORKING FARMS Wednesday, September 14th, 5:00–7:30pm Location: Hudson Valley Farm Hub, 1875 Mountain Rd, Hurley, NY 12443 (Ulster County) Join us at the Hudson Valley Farm Hub for this twilight meeting to explore farmer and apprentice relationships. How can farmers and apprentices co-create a learning environment that hones their skills and meets their farming goals? We’ll be joined by our professional farmer trainees, who will share their experiences as first-year “ProFarmers.” A field-based activity is planned to demonstrate the unique learning environment we’ve been creating at the Farm Hub. In addition, the NOFA-NY team will lead a discussion about their recently produced On-Farm Skills Guide, a tool for farmers and apprentices to plan, monitor, and encourage the work-learn process. 21. CONTINUING THE ORGANIC TRADITION WITH THE SECOND GENERATION September 22nd, 1:00–4:00pm Location: The Hardy Farm, 718 Aney Hill Rd, Mohawk, NY 13407 (Herkimer County) Join NOFA-NY at the Hardy Farm to learn more about running a diverse dairy operation that includes hogs, poultry, beef and dairy. Aaron and Sarah Hardy will lead a tour of their new beef facilities and explain how to manage your livestock organically. Aaron and Dave Hardy will share their story of building a family business that supports generational transfer, and how they have worked to create a shared management system focused on building knowledge and profitability. 22. OPENING OLD MEADOWS FOR A NEW GENERATION OF FARMERS: Sharing the Journey in the Hudson Valley and Beyond October (Date and time TBD; see NOFA-NY website for final details) Location: Hawthorne Valley Farm, 327 County Rt 21C, Ghent, NY 12075 (Columbia County) Hawthorne Valley Farm has been a center for learning since 1972 and, like NOFA-NY and other pioneering organizations, has seeded the Northeast with generations of biodynamic and organic farmers. From those roots comes a new generation of farmers hungry to change the landscape of agriculture for the future. According to the farmers at Hawthorne Valley, farms of the future will need a balanced and healthy connection to their biological, ecological and social fields. Join us for this planetary celebration of agricultural work in a changing community. Registration fees are $15/person or $25 for two or more people/farm. Another Organic Farmer Talks About Crop Insurance

“We use crop insurance on every insurable crop. We rely on it a fair amount to help manage risk. There hasn’t been any one year in particular that we feel it hasn’t been worthwhile. It’s been worthwhile every year.” - Luke Gianforte, age 24, Gianforte Farm, 600-acre certified organic operation located in Cazenovia, New York, growing up to 10 different field crops.

The farm also buys disaster coverage on spring wheat and triticale using the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP). Designed for use where crop insurance is not available, NAP offers financial protection against natural disasters that result in lower yields or crop losses, or prevent crop planting.
