SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN TOUR 22 – 30 SEPTEMBER 2014 (9 days twin share land only $6995)

Itinerary Not many countries can claim to be the home of modern design, but Sweden and Denmark are two countries in which design is absolutely inherent in their culture and their way of living. Their vintage antiques are as famous as their contemporary product and textile design, which makes for a rich tradition in art, craft and design. We have designed this new tour with a focus on Stockholm and Copenhagen as key Scandinavian design centres where we can explore a variety of artistic and cultural activities. Both cities offer a wonderful array of museums, galleries, design studios and boutiques for us to enjoy. From private tours of the Museum of Art and Design to dinner at the Tivoli Gardens; an evening at the Danish Ballet to a tour of the Paustian Exhibition House; a dinner cruise along the fiords to an exploration of the Marrimeko showroom; we will be inspired by the beauty of Scandinavian design, its people, customs, cities and countryside.

Frippe – Dramatrestaurangerne: This restaurant, which was named after Gustav “Frippe” Fredriksson, the man who built the National Theatre in Stockholm, underwent extensive renovation in 2000, transforming it from a little out-of-the-way café into the modern, airy restaurant you see today. This renovation was carried out when Lilla Scenen, the Small Stage, was sunk two floors down into the rock and turned into a modern reception room. The foyer was integrated with the restaurant, thus making Frippe the natural choice for people wishing to meet up with actors, theatre people and local residents.

MARIMEKKO SHOW ROOM Although Marimeko was established in the 1950s in Helsinki, it is a tribute to their designers, Vuokko Nurmesniemi and Maija Isola, and their bold prints and distinctive patters, that even in the 21st century, the brand and it products is increasing in popularity. “For people who came of age in the 1960's Marimmeko’s clothes and fabrics, with their striking design and splashes of bold colour, represented more than just a brand name: They conjured up an image and an era." SATURDAY 27th September 2014 (continued)   The hotel is right on the waterfront where picturesque old schooners and yachts moor. Today, the original warehouse with its rustic charm, rough brick walls, great archways and 200-year old beams of Pomeranian pine set the framework for modern hotel comfort in a class entirely of its own. DANISH DESIGN TOUR Throughout their history, the Danes have placed considerable importance on design: functional design, aesthetic design, architectural style and the application of art. On this tour, we start by visiting GAMMEL DOK, a magnificently restored warehouse on the harbour front, now housing THE DANISH CENTRE FOR ARCHITECTURE, which is furnished with high-quality Danish design products. The permanent exhibition here shows the development of Danish architecture and building style in the 20th and 21st centuries. The changing exhibitions of design and applied arts are created to challenge our thinking about innovative and future architecture. We can enjoy the wonderful view of Copenhagen from one of the modern glass projections on the building, before continuing to the DANISH MUSEUM OF ART AND DESIGN, which hosts a large collection of applied art, from the 18th century till the present. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum hosts a variety of temporary exhibitions, featuring anything from 18th century textile works to exhibitions on specific designers, such as Hans Jørgen Wegner or Charles & Ray Eames. The tour continues to PAUSTIAN, an exhibition house and store for modern Danish furniture, carpets, glass, porcelain, etc. The building was designed by the world famous Danish architect Jørn Utzon, who created the legendary Sydney Opera House. After the tour, the coach will bring us back to the hotel for leisure time prior to dinner. DINNER AT NIMB TERRRASSE, TIVOLI GARDENS This charming restaurant is located inside the beautiful Tivoli Gardens. It is a French-inspired bistro with a seasonal menu. The décor is very appealing, where Scandinavian simplicity meets richly detailed English and French styles.

TIVOLI GARDENS, the world´s most popular city park appeals equally to the local population as it does to visitors. The 21-acre park is beautifully landscaped with fountains and flowerbeds.
