Hunter’s Checklist Preparing for a hunting trip is a major effort. Be sure to leave information about where you’ll be hunting, camping, license plate numbers and cell phone numbers with folks at home. Listed below are a few common items that hunters often forget as they get ready to go into the backcountry:  First aid kit, sunscreen, toilet paper  Compass and maps  Flashlight, lantern, extra batteries  Rain gear  Knife sharpener, bone saw, game bag  Blaze orange vest and cap  Extra camp-stove fuel  Tire chains  Cleaning supplies, trash bags, shovel  Water bottles  Hunting license and Hunter Education card  List of family/friends phone numbers

Know Your Physical Limits Hunting in the mountains of Colorado is physically demanding. Even if you are in good shape you will still feel the effects of the altitude. Consider these tips as you head to the high country:

     

To acclimate, plan to arrive at your hunting area a couple of days before hunting season begins. Drink lots of water. Dehydration can cause severe headaches, muscle cramps and loss of energy. Carry water purification tablets so that you can refill your bottles at creeks. Limit alcohol—it causes dehydration. If you experience severe headaches or find it difficult to breathe, move to lower altitude as soon as possible. These symptoms could be signs of pulmonary edema or cerebral edema—both of which can be fatal. When hunting, move slowly and stop to rest often. Accidents are more likely to occur when you are tired. If you are feeling very tired and you are far from camp, unload your gun before continuing to walk. Discuss any health issues with your hunting partners.

(Personal, Family, Education, Business) Firearms Safety Depends on You! 1. Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. 2. Firearms should be unloaded when not actually in use. 3. Don’t rely on your gun’s “safety”. 4. Be sure of your target and what’s beyond it. 5. Use correct ammunition. 6. If your gun fails to fire when the trigger is pulled, handle with care! 7. Always wear eye and ear protection when shooting. 8. Be sure the barrel is clear of obstructions before shooting. 9. Don’t alter or modify your gun, and have guns serviced regularly. 10. Learn the mechanical and handling characteristics of the firearm you are using.

Make no mistake about it!
