four runners in the top 20. We lost two of those four runners, but should have the athletes to replace them and perhaps more. Isabel Litzen will be a strong runner for us, and anticipate her to finish near the top of the conference and region meets. Abbey Vogel brings strong leadership to the team, the lone 6-year runner we have. Mary Gutenkauf qualified in distance track events in the spring and had a good summer of running. We are excited see what she can do this fall.” Boys outlook: “The boys return five of the top six run-

ners from last year. A strong freshman class will make intra-squad competition for varsity spots interesting. The boys were 3rd in the conference and region last year, and would expect to do at least that again, and hopefully challenge for the top spot. It seems that many boys got to running over the summer and we should be improved. Toss in former Top 20 state runner senior Dan Albl, and we could have other teams a little worried.” Schedule: AUG: 30. Football

Coach: Pat Renner, 17 years as assistant coach, first year as head coach. 2013 team record: 3-5 2013 Conference record: 3-4 Toughest opponents: “Hitchcock Tulare, Faulkton, and Langford. Each of these teams return some great players and they are very well coached. It’s hard not to respect all of the teams on our schedule this season.” Returning letter-winners: Jason Hanson, Tyson Frohling, Nathan Jones, A.J. Andresen, Steven Wegleitner, Preston Oschner, Connor Kadoun, Karsten Stiegelmeier, Austin Schlagel, Jonathon Mundt, Jared Rabenberg, Logan Kann, Cully Olson, Justin Ringkob, Nathan Wegleitner, Rally Quesenberry, Kyle Frohling, and Ken Boyko. Returning starters: Jason Hanson, Tyson Frohling, Nathan Jones, A.J. Andresen, Steven Wegleitner, Logan Kann, Cully Olson, and Rally Quesenberry. Strengths: “I think our strength this year will be our balance of skilled receivers and a balance of speed and

size in the back field.” Plans for improvement: “As a first-year coach I think just getting the team to buy into my ways and getting everyone on the same page is our goal. We have some spots to fill on the line and some holes in the secondary that will need to be filled.” Season outlook: “We really have an excellent group of kids this year. They have played together a long time and have taken some lumps together the past couple of years, so I think if we can stay healthy, this season should be a good one. Nathan Jones is a threat in the back field every time he touches the ball and he will be running a lot behind 180 lb.-Steven Wegleitner, who also will get his fair share of touches. A.J. Andresen and Cully Olson are always threats in the air and both are tall kids with great hands. Rally Quesenberry will be running the show this year and he has shown this summer that he will be a handful when the ball is in his hands. Lineman Jason Hanson will cause headaches for offensive linemen in his path and he will be a two-way starter on the line for us. Center Logan Kann has worked hard all summer and he will open some eyes up front for us. Schedule: SEPT: 5; 12; 19, @ Tulare; 26. OCT: 3, @ Langford; 10; 17, @ Mellette.

Volleyball Coach: Ashley LaFave, first year coaching. 2013 Team record: 19-10 Conference: NEC Toughest opponents: “Looking at our schedule for the season, I believe that any opponent we play will be tough. They are quick and move to the ball well. They Britton-Hecla continued on page 4

Football Coach: Brian Haak Record: 38-55 Conference: TVC 2013 Team record: 8-2 Toughest opponents: Garretson should be tough again this fall. The TVC is always tough at the top. Top teams will be AHHS, Garretson, and I-W is always tough. Hanson is on our schedule and they will be very good this year after a little bit of a down year. Returning starters: Jaylen Dickau, Grant Johnson, Mitchell Johnson, Chris Klemme, Colin Walth, Lyle LaFramboise, Gavin Doering, Lance Sogn, Samuel Jensen, Colin Walth, and Trent Rus. Returning letter-winners: 16 Strengths: “This is a great group of kids who embrace the concept of team.” Plans for improvement: “Offensively, we need to continue to develop our passing game. Defensively, we need to consistently stop the run, especially against the tougher opponents.” Schedule: SEPT: 5; 12, @ Alexandria; 19; 26, @ Garretson. OCT: 3.

Volleyball Coach: Vicki Ahart, eight years coaching. 2014 team record: 33-4 Conference record: 6-0 Toughest opponents: “Parker always puts together a good team – sound all the way around; Gayville-Volin – a very scrappy defense, picks up a lot of balls and frustrates our hitters; and Viborg-Hurley – good hitters.” Returning letter-winners: Sierra McConnell, Kassidy Walth, and Tashena Osterkamp. Returning starters: Sierra McConnell and Kassidy Walth. Strengths: “Strong outside hitters with experience, hardworking but small group of upperclassmen and large freshmen class.” Plans for improvement: “Need to work on team unity, fundamentals and controlling the controllables.” Season outlook: “Start off raw due to our inexperience, but look to finish strong.” Schedule: SEPT: 2, @ Baltic; 4, @ Gayville-Volin; 11; 16, @ Dakota Valley; 18; 20, @ Tyndall; 22, @ Freeman Academy; 25; 27, @ Elkton. We have decent size, but lack team speed. We play in a very tough region with Arlington and Deubrook. We would like to get back into the playoffs and try and make a run. Returning starters: Kirsten Rall & Isabel Wedell. Strengths: “We will stay aggressive offensively and be a solid serving team.” Plans for improvement: “We are going to take every aspect of the game & work hard to improve.” Season outlook: “We are, basically, a brand new team this year. We lost four seniors that were the glue to last year’s team. This year, I see us having excellent leadership and we will gel very well together. We only have two returning starters, with the rest of the team not having much varsity experience at all. Therefore, we will see an improved team in each and every match we play. By tournament time, we should be a team to contend for a region tournament seed.”

Defensively we should be pretty good with some talented kids returning. Team depth at the offensive and defensive line should benefit us during the season.” Plans for improvement: “We must be able to throw the ball some during the season. We have some good skilled positions that will get better as the season progresses. I think we must become a little more physical on both sides of the ball. Coach: Jeff Kosters, in 19th year coaching. Record: 108-68 2013 Team record: 7-3 Conference: YTC Conference record: 4-2 Toughest opponents: “Potter County and Harding County will probably be two of the tougher opponents for us. Potter County was in the championship last year and Harding County was in the semifinals at 9B last year. Both programs return quite a few starters.” Returning letter-winners: 11 Returning starters: 8 Strengths: “Our backfield will be very talented with Cooper and Logan Schaefbauer both returning as starters. Brady Fiedler returns at the quarterback position and we return three linemen as well.” Plans for improvement: “We will have to replace some quality players lost to graduation.” Season outlook: “We will have some new faces in positions this fall. Our backfield can be outstanding, but we will have to come up with a formidable line. Staying healthy has also been an issue for us at times. We have the potential to be a very good football team again this fall.” Schedule: SEPT: 12, @ Herreid; 19, @ Lemmon; 26, @ Gettyburg. OCT: 3, @ Herreid; 10, @ Selby; 17, @ Buffalo.

Returning starters: Jana Thorstenson, Abbey Fjeldheim, Paige Feist, and Charlie Tisdall. Toughest opponents: “Many teams in the area graduated many good players last year. We will approach every contest as the ‘toughest game,’ on our schedule, but teams that seem to be on the top of that list are Warner, Linton, ND, Potter County, Sully Buttes, Ipswich, Faulkton, and opponents in the Britton tournament.” Strengths: “This year’s group is competitive and athletic. Those two qualities will help them to improve as the season goes on.” Plans for improvement: “Our goal is to have steady improvement in all areas of the game and to be a contender come tournament time.” Season outlook: “We are excited to get started!” Schedule: SEPT: 2, @ Mobridge; 30, @ Roscoe. Warner and Miller – they have great programs and traditions.” Returning letter-winners: Saige Peterson, Shaylyn Steinheuser, Kaytlynn Boomsma, and Erin Barrie. Returning starters: Peterson, Steinheuser, Boomsma, and Barrie. Strengths: “I think one of our biggest strengths right now is our serving. Each year we have tough serving, and serve very well. I see that’s going to be a strength for us this year. Also, we have passed the ball fairly well. If we can correct a few things, we will be able to stay in system quite a bit and get our offense going.” Plans for improvement: “A couple of areas we have to improve in is hitting and blocking. We are going to be playing some freshmen and sophomores in the front row, which do not have much varsity experience. We are really

going to have to work on placing the ball when we hit. Defensively, we also have to work on getting touches on the ball so our back row can keep the ball in play.” Season outlook: “After this summer, I am really looking forward to getting the season started. We have shown a lot of potential in the off-season. Even though we will be an extremely young team (no seniors on the roster) I think we are going to be surprising some people. This group is willing to work hard so that they can improve each time out. I see our conference being very competitive. Strengths and plans for improvement: “We return a core of players that have been very successful on the football field, basketball floor and wrestling mats. We feel like we are primed for another very successful season. Our depth, like most teams at our level is the one spot that we really have to focus on, especially along the offensive and defensive lines. On the offensive side of the ball we have to continue our work in pass protection and also find a way to successfully run the football when the teams know that is what we are doing. Defensively last year we improved in our ability to get off blocks and tackle. We need to continue every day to get better at this. In our region the teams that stop the run and run the football are going to be successful. We feel like defensively we hang our hat on creating turnovers and negative plays and we will continue to focus on these things.
