San Diego North Chapter CAPMT Monthly ~ Newsletter Affiliated with the Music Teacher’s National Association March 2016 / Edition 3, Volume 1

Hi SD North Chapter members, At the January State Board Meeting held in LA, I approved the formation of the SD North and SD South Chapters, and that decision was recorded in the State meeting minutes. I gave this approval under my anticipation and the State Board’s expectation of cooperation between the two Chapters. I have reached out to the new South Chapter to meet together and begin collaboration, but no interest has yet been indicated, and the South Chapter recently scheduled their first two events conflicting on the same dates as our upcoming originally scheduled Spring Festival and June Spotlight Awards. SD North Chapter and the Board members are: President-Elect Tavner Delcamp, VP Mariam Mouawed, and remaining Executive Board and Festival Chairs are: Linda Rohmund, Amaya BK., Kathleen Kranz, Viktor Shekhtman, Jill Kocher, Susan Fee, George Fee, Dilys Yung, Yukiko Mitchell, Myhang Huynh and Tucky Rodrigue. I will continue to serve as Chapter President until Tavner takes over the reins in June.

SD South Chapter President is Rowena Asuncion, VP Sally Sumner, and remaining Executive Board Fresas Balistrei, Luyan Guo, Tim Sumner and Steven Barta. Dr. Jihun Cho stepped up to chair our newly formed District 1 YPLN chapter. All members are currently listed as belonging to District 1. When each member’s renewal comes up this June, you will then need to select a single home chapter. It will take some time for all of this to be sorted out for everyone and finalized by the State and the MTNA. For those who have recently moved to San Diego and are not familiar with our district, the general guideline is that if your location is North of Mission Valley you would select SD North and if your location is south of Mission Valley, it would be SD South. But that is not mandated and it is your choice. San Diego North Chapter is comprised of many CAPMT-MTAC dual members. As such, we will be working in partnership to ensure that our individual events do not conflict, and that they will complement one another. We have already begun planning joint events for next year, such as a Fall Festival and possibly a Junior Bach Festival/Baroque & Classical Festival, to grow our events together as having much great potential for our members. While we greatly appreciate our original CAPMT members, if you are a dual member, then San Diego North is definitely the place for you to select when your membership renewal comes up. Please join San Diego North Chapter for our originality and depth in serving our music community.

The individual North and South Chapters will conduct their own individual local programs, but the District will be responsible for coordinating single District wide State sanctioned ` programs such as Piano Auditions, Ensemble Auditions, Honors Competitions, Contemporary Music Festivals and Concerto Competition. CONTEMPORARY & HONOR’S FESTIVAL 2016

Festival Summary The Contemporary Music Competition and the Honors Competition for CAPMT District 1 were held on Saturday, February 20, at Point Loma Nazarene University. The winners in each age category of the competitions will represent District 1 at the State Finals on April 30, at UC Berkeley. Judges for the events were Elizabeth Medici from Temecula and Connie Almond from San Diego.

Baroque/Classical Festival Summary The San Diego North Chapter of CAPMT held Baroque-Classical and Sonata-Sonatina Festivals on Saturday, February 13th at the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad. Students from the studios of eight teachers participated with 30 students performing between 3 recitals-include Sonatina medal session. We thank all of the students for working hard in learning their pieces! Here are Sonata/Sonatina Festival winners:   

Elementary Division: Tristan Vuong (1st), Sonya Yasuda (2nd), William Spaven (3rd), and Emily Chen (Honorable Mention). Intermediate Division: included Nona Kokami (1st), Andrew Chen (2nd), Claire Chen (3rd), and Leanna Chen (Honorable Mention). Advanced Division: Christopher Hong (1st), Andrew Cheng (2nd), Joo Eun Kim (3rd), Abby Jin and Raymond Sun (Honorable Mention)

Many thanks to the teachers who sent students: Tavner Delcamp, Jyoti Hench, Kathy Kim, Mariam Mouawad, Viktoriya Kuzminska, Yukiko Mitchell, Viktor Shekhtman, and Young Robbins. Also, we thank the adjudicators for the festival: Dr. Jihun Cho (morning/afternoon sessions) and Dr. Kathleen Kranz (afternoon session) who did excellent jobs writing evaluations and deciding upon the medal winners.
