History of St. Henry Church & Cemetery (1907-1982) The Holy Sacrifice of Mass was offered for the first time at Henry in the section house, the residence of John J. Farry, by Father Albrecht in the fall of 1882. Then it was offered monthly until the spring of 1883; from May 1883 until August 1884, it was offered at the home of John T. Ginther. Dakota at that time was a territory comprising both North and South Dakota under the jurisdiction of the saintly Bishop Marty. At a meeting in the spring of 1884 two things were accomplished. They agreed to have the church called St. Henry and they elected a committee to receive subscriptions toward building the new church. The committee consisted of John T. Ginther, chairman; John J. Farry, secretary; Patrick Walsh, treasurer; and Jacob Hingesberger and Henry Ferich.. Thus it was decided to build a church and steps were immediately taken to have the plan put into operation and they met at the Farry residence. Two lots were purchased from Frank Pierce in what was the Pierce Addition and two lots were donated by A. L. Buell, the editor and publisher of the Henry newspaper, which later became the Henry Independent. The contract was let to John Foy and Son June 1, 1884. The church was completed on September 1, 1884 at a cost of $750.00 under the pastorate of Father Albrecht. The church is 82 feet long by 40 feet wide and 38 feet high with side walls 16 feet high. The interior is finished in hardwood, and is lighted by 16 beautiful Page 52
stained glass windows. There is a spacious gallery capable of seating 200. Seating capacity of the church is 600. Formal dedication took place in the spring of 1908 by R. Rev. Bishop O’Gorman of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. An addition was built to the church when Father Wernich was pastor at a cost of $350.00. During the time that Father Bonneterre had charge of the Henry Parish, the first definite steps were taken towards the building of the new church. The old Bass property was bought at the price of $550.00. Excavation and basement were completed in August 1906 at the cost of $550.00. In August 1907 work was commenced on the new church by John B. Mondloch. The total cost of the new church was $6000.00. Father F. J. Twohig with the entire congregation offered the Holy Sacrifice of Mass for the first time in the new Church on November 3, 1907. The trustees of the parish were Timothy Curley and John B.Mondloch; and the building committee was Phillip O’Neill and Edward Ginther. Under the pastorate of Father Timothy O’Gorman, the new rectory was built in 1908, with Father O’Gorman doing much of the manual work. Father Albrecht was the first pastor of the Henry Parish. The following priests succeeded Father Albrecht as the pastor of Saint Henry’s Parish. In 1885 Father J.G. Perrault was appointed the first resident pastor of Watertown, still retaining Henry as one of his missions. Father M. Nolan, Father Neibling, Father John Wernich, and Fr. Lauer all residing at Watertown followed each other in succession in the charge of the Henry mission. Father Joseph Gydonsek was appointed St. Henry’s first resident pastor with Clark as one of his missions. Father Gardiner with Clark as residence followed. Father Peter Lauer with residence at Watertown succeeded. Father Bonneterre was appointed pastor of Clark in 1904 with Henry and Grover as missions. Father F. J. St. Henry’s had a membership of 72 families in 1980. Father Francis T. Majusiak was a motivating force in the choices in the lives of many who entered the Convent from St. Henry and St. Peter at Grover. They are: Sr. Patrick Leonard Murphy (Mary Marlene), Sr. Helen Jean Washtoak (M. Carmen), Sr. M. Virginia Hallauer (Mary Lucille), Sr. M. Gabriella Crowley (Ann Lavonne), Sr. Maureen Blais ((Anna Marie), Sr. Immaculata Reddy (Eileen), Sr. Kathleen Ann Bierne (M. Lambert), Sr. Evarista Reddy (Catherine), Sr. Mary of St. John the Evangelist Crowley (Margaret), Sr. M. ?sp.DePazzi Zimprich (Mary Maxine). Father Francis T. Majusiak 11/10/1914 - 01/19/1992 was ordained on 05/30/1942. RESTORATION PROJECT 02/14/2004 A building committee was established with the main objective of bringing the church as close to its original form as feasible. Four local contractors and substantial involvement from the parish on a volunteer basis lowered the overall costs and shortened the duration of the project which began 02/14/2004. Pews were moved to the basement so Mass could continue to be held. Everything came down that day. In 1975 a false ceiling was installed to conserve energy and lower the church’s fuel Page 53
cost. Now the Stations of the Cross were removed. To date they are hanging in the Catholic Church in Montrose, SD. Insulating was completely done with parish labor at a total cost of $2,244.59. The total cost of taping, texturing and painting of the interior walls was $8,886.24 done by Chuck Engels Drywall of Henry. Bachman Construction was responsible for drywall installation, framing and trim work at a total cost of $12,036.00, lowered due to parish labor. Dupont electric was in charge of new wiring, lights, fans, etc. at a cost of $13,092.88. Clayton Coleman of Bradley installed the carpet for $1,844.38. Then the painting of antique gold by Cathy Smith and Laurie Keltgen. Then came moving the pews back upstairs and the Parish was able to celebrate Mass in the upstairs of the church on March 28, 2004. St. Henry purchased a new tabernacle in June 2004. Original and restored pieces make up the rest of the sanctuary. During the remodeling process an opening in the ceiling revealed “Hidden Treasures”, 4 statues and 3 pedestals.
