Cruise–Control Marriages Invite DisconnecƟon by Fr. Timothy Pavlatos, MDiv, M.S., LMFT
Marriages cannot be sustained in a healthy way, let alone grow, if –as couples– we set them on ‘cruise con‐ trol.’ All marriages need to be nurtured from the first day to the last of our lives. In all rela onships we seek to know and understand the other–just as the other mutually comes to know and understand us. This takes me, a en on, and a vested interest. When we experience someone taking the me to know us by asking ques ons, listening, and sharing their own thoughts and feelings, we feel con‐ nected. Engaging the other in dialogue while being fully pre‐ sent requires pu ng aside “all the cares of this life.” This a en veness demonstrates care, concern, and interest. We all want to feel that our spouse will re‐ spond and be there when we call out to them. Ul ‐ mately it is about trust; as if to say, ‘Will you be there and can I count on you?’ If the an‐ swer is ‘Yes,’ each person will experience two extreme‐ ly important components to a healthy marriage: safety and security. When a marriage is put in ‘cruise control,’ there is the belief that the rela onship is good and has no pressing issues. This point of view looks at marriage from a ‘problem‐free’ perspec ve. If there aren’t any real concerns to address, then all me and a en on can be directed toward other things such as children, work, friends, and fun. However, the danger of this is that it opens the door to disconnec on between the spouses. This disconnect may not be felt immediately—just as a plant won’t show it’s in distress without water for a couple of days. In me, though, the lack of water will manifest itself in the leaves and flowers. In the same manner, a marriage rela onship without regular ‘watering’ will, over me, begin to show signs of distress in one or both spouses in ways such as: • Irritability • Sarcasm • Complaining • Withdrawing • Nagging Our typical reac ons may come out in abrupt ques‐ ons and statements such as:
• “What’s wrong with you?” • “Why are you so rude and mean?” • “Stop already! All you do is complain.” • “You’re never around anymore. Everything else in life is more important to you.” • “Give me a break! Stop hounding me about everything.” These comments come out of our own frustra on, pain, and fear of being neglected, abandoned, and iso‐ lated. A be er way to respond would be to engage our spouses in a way that invites them to kinder dialogue. • “I’ve no ced you’ve been a li le irritable lately. Please tell me what’s going on.” • “That comment was hur ul. Is everything okay?” • “You seem like you have a lot on your mind. Is there anything I can do to help?” • “I feel like we’ve been dri ing apart. Can we take some me to talk about this?” Marriage is like a dance where we work together, learning to synchronize our steps with our spouse. This can’t happen if we don’t nurture our rela onship daily. Here are a few sugges ons to nurture our marriages: • Dialogue with Christ every day in prayer. • Learn the “love language” of your spouse. (For more details, see Gary D. Chapman’s The Five Love Languages) • Offer encouraging and suppor ve statements to one another daily. • Listen carefully to understand each other and don’t assume. • Cul vate a spirit of gra tude for the blessings in your life. • Spend quiet me together—just the two of you. • Take an interest in ac vi es your spouse enjoys. God is the source of love and, through Him, there is no limit to the love that we can experience with our spouse. If we inten onally nurture our marriage daily, there is no limit to the in macy we can feel for each other. Fr. Timothy Pavlatos is the director of the Family Wellness Minis‐ try of the Metropolis of San Francisco. He is a licensed marriage and family therapist. (Con nued a er the Parish council Mee ng Update)

Diakonia Retreat Center Regional Fundraiser
Once again our community and the surrounding communities of Greensboro, High Point and Burlington worked cooperatively together as one, in support of our Retreat Center in Salem, SC. Hi Eminence was so touched and overwhelmed by the evening, he called it a “miracle”. The setting was phenomenal, the food was exquisite, the service by GOYANS touching and the whole evening was one to remember, savor and be proud of. Our community once again has stood tall, and shown the right and good example to ALL. Our sincere appreciation is expressed to ALL who offered their talent, time and treasure for this worthy endeavor. Our goal was to reach $50,000 towards reducing the DRC mortgage which is 1,923,253. We have accomplished our goal and are close to $54,000. All donors will be receiving a thank you letter and an acknowledgement for tax purposes from the Metropolis. Our sincere appreciation to our Co-chairmen, Jim Tasios and Gus Kazakos for a job well done!

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING UPDATE
HONOR/MEMORIAL FOR VETERANS (U.S., Greek and other Nationalities) DIAKONIA CENTER
The following items of note resulted from business discussed at the October 12 , 2015 Parish Council meeting:
The Metropolis would like to know the names of all Veterans (U.S., Greek & other Nationalities) living or deceased in our community in order to honor them for their service to their country. Please complete this form and mail it to:
We were fortunate to have Lou Zagami with the IOCC—International Organization of Christian Charities—in church on Sunday October 11th. This is truly a wonderful organization that is affiliated with our Church. They are very efficiently run and provide humanitarian aid throughout the U.S. and abroad to areas that really are in need of help. Nearly 98% of every dollar they raid through fundraising efforts are actually given back out through direct aid. Please consider supporting this worth cause.
Sunday School children need to be present at Church as well as Sunday School. Parents, please be sure that your children are in attendance at Church and not only in the breezeway.
We are grateful to have had Sam Liontis prepare the food for our community fellowship night on October 14th. Our next community fellowship night will be on November 11th.
The upcoming General Assembly meeting will be held on November 22nd, 2015.
Our recent Diakonia Fundraiser was a great success! Many thanks to all who participated. The food and fellowship were wonderful and our Goyans did an excellent job in serving. We will be able to provide significant assistance to the Diakonia Center as a result of the support of our Annunciation community.
The 2016 budget was discussed approved.

PRAYER FOR MARRIED COUPLES Lord Jesus Christ, we thank You for the day on which You joined us in the sacrament of marriage. Lord, con nue to bless and enrich our marriage in love, companionship, mutual support, oneness of heart, and progress in faith and life. Protect our marriage from sin, evil, and danger. Foster between us the spirit of understanding, the spirit of forgiveness, and the spirit of peace. Grant us to see our own faults and not to judge each other. Gladden our lives with the joys of marriage, that with one heart we may praise and glorify You. Amen.
IS YOUR MARRIAGE STRUGGLING? Some me the challenges we face in marriage need someone from the outside to help us sort them out. De‐ ciding to go to marriage counseling does not indicate that you have failed in marriage or as persons, but ra‐ ther that you are seeking assistance to strengthen your rela onship. For assistance in finding help speak with your parish priest or visit www.marriagefriendlytherapists.com or www.aapc.org (American Associa on of Pastoral Counselors).

Annunciation Christian Academy November is a month that brings thoughts of gratitude. At ACA we have so much to be thankful for. The teachers have been working hard teaching all of the children about giving thanks and lending a helping hand. The children are also looking forward to the month of November as the fall season continues and they prepare for Thanks‐ giving with fun songs, crafts, and learning all about harvest time. We are also especially thankful for the church community that supports ACA. The ACA teachers would like to give a special thank you to Virginia Moutos who cooked an amazing lunch for them. It was such a kind gesture and they truly do appreciate it! We would like to wish you and your family a Mary Paloumbas, ACA Chairman very Happy Thanksgiving!
Hello ALL church Ladies! And this month calling men too!! ***FESTIVAL Dancers 6 -12 who are not involved in Competition will begin dance on March 1st, 2016. *** REGISTRATION FOR ALL GROUPS It happens that in order to have a successful youth program we have to accommodate our youth and offer opportunities within our ministry for every child. We do this by allowing our program to be pliable and accessible for all our youth from Kindergarten to 12th grade by providing various ways in which they can participate. All ages/ groups then can perform in at least one of the three culminating events: Hellenic Dance Festival, March 25th, and Greek Festival. Because our program does not begin at the same time for everyone, there has been some confusion about registration. PLEASE REGISTER YOUR CHILD IN THE CATEGORY THAT THEY WANT TO PARTICPATE BY NOVEMBER 3rd EVEN IF YOUR CHILD DOES NOT START PRACTICE UNTIL MARCH. We offer three participation opportunities for our ministry. GROUP/CATEGORY START TIME COST COMPETITION (6th-12th) September 8th $75 (For more than one sibling in this category, you get a $5 discount per child). Sermonette Theme: Lessons from Sunday Epistles
Our charity food drive continues this month. While we have a few items thus far, we know how generous and caring our parish is and look to fill the boxes to the top! We accept all non-perishable food items and have placed collection bins in each classroom. Every year we gift youth in the 7th grade an Orthodox Study Bible. This year we will offer this gift on Sunday November 8 during the youth Sermon. Please be on time to receive this special gift. Please remember … In order to participate in youth activities outside of Sunday School (GOYA, Greek Dance, etc.), a student must attend greater than 55% of his or her Sunday School classes. Divine Liturgy in another town can be counted. The necessary form can be found at www.wsgoc.org. We wish you a safe, thoughtful and wonderful Thanksgiving season.

We pray in the service of the Artoklasia, for protection from wrath, famine, pestilence, earthquake, flood, fire, sword, foreign invasions, civil strife, and accidental death. When these events do occur the church responds to our neighbors as the Good Samaritan did in the Parable taught by Christ seeking to provide help to those in need. The Orthodox Churches in the United States provide humanitarian assistance world wide through the International Orthodox Christian Charites (IOCC) an official agency of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops. We see daily in the media and internet the humanitarian issues affecting the world today especially the MidEast/European refugee crisis, recent floods in SC, and wildfires in CA just to name a few. In an effort to support IOCC and those who are in need , we will be collecting items to make hygiene kits throughout the month of November and December. Hygiene kits consist of the following items: One hand towel, One washcloth, One metal nail file or nail clipper, One bar of soap (bath size), One toothbrush ( no toothpaste), and Six Band-Aids (in a Ziploc bag) Containers to collect the items will be set up in the breezeway beginning in November. Monetary donations can be made online at IOCC.org and clicking on the DONATE NOW button. The items then will be made into kit form by our youth and then sent to IOCC for Distribution to those in need around the world. Community Fellowship Night Wednesday November 11th,
