Timpanogos Gem & Mineral Society

The Theme for March 2011 Bulletin Become acquainted with Timpanogos Gem & Mineral Society Our Family Rock & Mineral Club. Read about the SHOW PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Keith Fackrell Guess what! March is here already. The Spring Parade of Gems Show is just around the corner. NO! The show is headed down the straight-away. It will be here and gone before we know it. I am asking everyone to do their best to help make this a great show. When we get the show across the finish line and the dust settles, it will be time to get ready for Spring and Summer activities. I have been hearing rumors about some GREAT FIELD TRIPS coming up. They sound like a lot of fun.

JERRIE & KEITH FACKRELL

Nancy Nusink, our Field Trip Chairperson, is working hard to get some Field Trips scheduled. She has a list of some of the Field Trips on page 9. If you have an idea of a good trip you would like to lead or just want to go on, call Nancy at 801-489-7413 and let her know. You might think you do not need any more rocks in your yards! Well, you may be right. However, just think of the fun and enjoyment you will have just being out doors and rubbing shoulders with other Rock Hounds. While you are out you can pickup some smaller rocks (about the size of a gulf ball or smaller) that could be used to fill grab bags. Wes Ream, Grab Bag Chairperson, said, “We can always use Grab Bag Rocks!” It is very enjoyable to go out and see the beauties of nature and bask in it’s beauty!. It is also fun to ride 4-wheelers on some of our field trips. Nancy will let us know which ones we can bring our 4-wheelers on. Let us all get out and enjoy the Spring Summer & Fall. Don’t pass up a chance to go out and have fun, help others and above all, be safe in what you do. Thanks, Keith

* Knowledgeable members of TGMS are willing to help anyone wanting to learn the Lapidary skills. For instance DICK PETERSON puts a Tips by Richard column in almost every month with How-To suggestions and Ideas. You can read this month’s tips in April. •

Attend the Monthly Meetings and talk to the knowledgeable members and listen to educational lectures or, if scheduled, have hands-on experiences.

Attend the yearly Spring Parades of Gems, rock and mineral show the third week in March.

SHE’S TAKING THE PICTURES OF THE JUNIOR CLUB ACTIVITY

Wow! What a great time the JR’s had at the March meeting. We couldn’t go to Topaz so it came to us. We sifted sand from Topaz to find Topaz Crystals. We also had an exploding good time setting off a Volcano. Thank you Charlotte and Jerry Davis and David Ekins for the time and effort you put into making the JR. Club a fun and exciting place of learning. The Jr. Rock Club is sponsoring a booth at the Gem and Mineral show March 18th -20th. We will be teaching kids how to sift sand at Topaz. There will be a super display of Crystal’s from across the World. Some of our Jr.s and their parents will be in the booth helping us with the sifting. In April the Jr. Club is sponsoring a Geology trip to the Volcanoes west of Fillmore, Utah. IT will be a two day trip. There is the Comfort Inn in Fillmore that you can reserve a room for Friday night or you can go home and come back the next day for more Geology and then some collecting. We would love to have you there. For more information contact Charlotte or Jerry Davis at 801-7543831. The Jr. Club is a safe, fun eventful evening presented on the First Tues of each month at the Eldred Center in Provo, Utah. It is a great way for the kids to learn about Rocks & Minerals, the processes of the earth and have a great time making new friends. The Leaders of the JR. Club work very hard at providing learning, meaningful and exciting evenings for the kids to come and enjoy. We hope to see every youth in our club there on the first Tues. of each month. We have even heard the parents have a great time as well.

30 MARCH 2011 MEETING KEN HODGKINSON WILL BE SPEAKING TO US.

We try to protect our rock hunting areas at all times.

Ken Hodgkinson, a native of Vernal, Utah, graduated from high school in Orem, Utah. He earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees in geology at BYU and was excited when he was awarded the W. A. Tarr award for being the most outstanding earth science student at BYU.

TOPAZ HUNTING AREA We need to all do our part. That is if we expect to continue rock hounding. The best way to help our hobby, is by sending e-mail or letters to anyone & everyone that you think might make a difference. Remember that a squeaking wheel gets greased, & that persistence pays off. I know, I have made a difference with my e-mails on several issues in the past. The average American never seems to get involved. It is the radicals that that seem to determine the course of our country because they are loud and persistent. We need to become radicals or lose the ability to rock hound.

Jim Kallin WE CAN ALSO PROTECT OUR ROCK HUNTING AREAS BY: * Getting permission from private land owners before hunting on their property. * Make sure to clean up the area AND leave the gates as they were. * Take only what we will use, leave the rest for others to follow. * Treat everyone with respect.

After graduating from BYU, he attended the University of Iowa where he earned a Ph.D. in Geology and paleontology with foraminifera being his specialty. He married Erlene Schreiber from American Fork. They have two children, both born in Texas. He then went to work for Humble Oil and refining Company (Now Exxon Mobil) in Texas, Canada and Louisiana. He continued his interest in geology, especially in the mollusks where he published papers of his specialty. During his assignment in Canada he was able to excavate schapopodsa and study dinosaur fossils from the magnificent fossil beds near Drumheller, Canada. Since retiring, he has been able to visit active volcanoes in Hawaii (Kilauea) and Guatemala (Fuego) and see some of the beautiful karst topography along the Li River in China. We are glad that Ken has agreed to come to share his knowledge and expertise with us at the 30 March 2011 Timpanogos Gem & Mineral Society meeting.

I’M COMING TO THE MEETING!

ROCK CHIPS Edna & Bryant Washburn 65 years together Edna & Bryant celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary February 23, 2011 with over 100 friends and relatives. Both Edna and Bryant expressed that they treasure their friends and family and enjoy being with them.

Bryant and Edna have had two big projects the past year. 1) They published three volumes with 300+ pages in each volume with pictures and service experiences of WWII Veterans who had lived in and around Sevier County. Bryant himself served 6 years in WWII.

Page 6 “ROCK YOUR SOCKS: GEM & MINERAL SHOW FULL OF WONDERS”, Matt Reichman wrote in the Daily Herald 20 Mar 2010 about TGMS Rock Show. He used such words as: “the entrance looked like a creaky old mine.” “T-Rex skeleton and shrieking (laughing) children” “build-your-own fossil” ”Wow’ factor with all the colors” “exotic rocks” “one of the better shows around, said Ron Wooley, adding, It’s a true rock-club show.” “finest rocks, gems, stones and bones”—Mr. Bones

2) They donated over 568 rocks, minerals, fossils and other specimens that are displayed in 17, 3-shelf display cases approximately 45” by 45” also donated by the Washburns to the Ashman Elementary School in Richfield Utah. They also donated a beautiful black light village complete with homes, train, pond and streets displayed in a room Ashman Elementary School built just for the village. When Bryant found out President Bush was going to be in Salt Lake City autographing his book, Bryant said, We are going up there!” They got in and spent a little time talking with President Bush and donated their three WWII volumes to him before the rest of the group started coming in. Bryant and Edna loves people! They love to share their collection and has donated some lovely pieces to the Timpanogos Gem & Mineral Society for their upcoming March 18, 19 & 20, 2011 Show. Thank you Edna and Bryant for your love of life and friendship. Thank you for all you do to

Sunshine Column Scatter Sunshine all along your way,

Cheer and bless and brighten because it ’ ll soon be May Please report any happy or sad news to Beth Edvalson at 801-785-2519 It seems that there are few that are sick among us, but the Orthopedic Physicians are invading our Club. Kay and Blaine Barry are recovering from surgery on their feet. They will not be healed for several months. We are sorry about that. It makes one wonder who is answering when one of them says, "would you please get me .........". We wish them well. Barbara Shalvis was at the Rock and Gem Meeting and looked well and happy with her new shoulder. Jean Chatwin had surgery on her heart and she looked well but tired at the Gem Meeting. She said she is yet to have surgery on the veins and the original incision. When I talked to her at the Meeting it sounded very complicated but she has recently had the repair done and is on the mend. We are so glad for her recovery too. Carolyn Jensen was at the Meeting too but I didn't talk to her there, so I called her at home and found that Pete is getting shots in his eye that should help with his macular degeneration, that is such a great benefit. Carolyn's eye has not regained it's vision ability yet. A few weeks ago she had her knee replaced and it is getting along well but it will take time for complete recovery. Both she and Pete are looking forward to being able to get back upon the Mountain in the summer. We are hoping for a speedy recovery for them too. Lynette Richins, wife of Don Richins, is recovering from Knee surgery too. was very Cheerful about it and the fact that it takes time to get it completely healed. Both She and Carolyn has such a positive attitude.

She

I think that perhaps we should start a special society within the Gem Club for those members who have had a joint replaced. Isn't it great that People don't have to limp through life in Pain as in, not too many, years ago. On the lighter side, I just received word that Nancy Bean has helped with the birthing of at least 11 goats and they all need bottle fed. Plus she is trying to get ready for the March 18, 19 & 20 Rock Show. And I thought I was busy! In a Club as big as ours, I know there are some of our members who are in pain or sorrowing that we have not heard about. If you are one of those, Please know that you have some friends that would like to hear from you and share your pain or sorrow.... Everyone else stay well! We need you at the Rock and Gem Show ............... Beth Edvalson.

COME TO THE MARCH 18, 19 & 20 GEM & MINERAL SHOW. Win a prize, break a Mexican Geode, buy a how-to-book, buy jewelry, learn a new hobby, buy lapidary products or equipment, create your own fossil, check out the Australian Opal, buy some beads, buy a gift, check out the show cases, enjoy the walking T-Rex skeleton! Plan on having FUN, being RELAXED, meeting NEW PEOPLE, finding out where to go rock hunting and eating your meal. HAVE FUN!
