An introduction from our Global Market Director, Andrew Richardson

It is not often I get time to reflect but being asked to write this introduction for our new look ‘Reflections’ magazine has given me the opportunity to do just that; reflect on a year of change. Change for a number of reasons; firstly in January we changed organizationally within the Performance Coatings Division of AkzoNobel to become a sub Business unit of Car Refinish Business Unit, moving away from Marine and Protective Coatings Business Unit. This will bring Aerospace Coatings, as a business, a number of benefits, some of which we are already starting to see. For example, we pride ourselves in AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings on our color expertise. Car Refinishes Business Unit brings us even greater access to color technology, which will feed through into our market bringing new effects and manufacturing techniques that will benefit our customers. Car Refinishes Business Unit will also bring us a greater critical mass to innovate technologically and introduce new technologies and solutions into our market. On a personal level I have moved into my new position of Market Director full time, following the appointment of Richard Marston to run the UK Business. This is a very exciting time as my team and I get very much into working on new business strategies for each of our Aerospace Markets. Additionally you will start to see changes as we launch new brands and brand identity around the globe. Our whole branding image will be standardized so that we can build on our successes in each of our chosen market segments. (You can see the new branding styles on page 8 of this ‘Reflections’ magazine).

The close of 2010 brings us notable success at The Boeing Company, where our new Aerodur 3001 Basecoat and Aerodur 3002 Clearcoat are now offerable to customers. Boeing has listed these products in their D6-1816 manual meaning that customers can request (as a no cost option) and receive an NTO (No Technical Objection) for use on the Boeing production line. This will bring customers who specify the AkzoNobel Basecoat/Clearcoat system significant benefits in terms of durability, coating performance and brand image. The Aerodur system is currently the only Basecoat/Clearcoat system to be approved by Boeing in this way. Looking forward to 2011 you can expect to see a number of new product launches, brands and innovations that will be communicated through the pages of Reflections and at a number of global trade shows. Please see the back cover of Reflections for an update of our plans for 2011. In the meantime please do not hesitate to give me feedback on the new look of Reflections so that we can be sure we offer a Magazine that is interesting and relevant for our market and customers. Faithfully, Andrew Richardson Global Market Director [email protected]

The Boeing Company has announced to airlines that AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings’ Aerodur 3001 Basecoat and Aerodur 3002 Clearcoat system is now offerable as a no cost option on new Boeing Airplanes. Ask the expert...

Ron Fattal [email protected]

The system is listed in Boeing’s D6-1816 manual (all Boeing customers have this manual). The document addendum PDD6-135 references Aerodur 3001 and Aerodur 3002 by name and is the only Basecoat/Clearcoat (BC/CC) system in the specification. An updated addendum will be released in December 2010, listing the full family of Aerodur 3001/3002 Activators. This departure document will be PDD6-143. The Aerodur BC/CC system brings many advantages to our airline customers, including significantly improved durability, cleanability and longer scheme life, which in turn build better brand image over time. This also leads to lower costs as aircraft paint programs can be extended over time. Customers requiring the system from Boeing will receive an NTO (No Technical Objection) upon submission of their request. AkzoNobel can provide Boeing customer service contact information upon request.

Inspirational color solutions Inspirational Color Solutions Fan Deck Available to help color match.

New color brochures are now complete and were unveiled at this year’s NBAA (National Business and Aviation Association) convention in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A., in October. The new color selection guide “Inspirational color solutions” features 163 colors in total, 89 solid and 74 metallic/special effects.

The color palette incorporates the more popular colors used by designers and owners in the General and Business Aviation Market, but these same colors may be used for any aircraft in any market. Global color numbers are referenced as well as reflectance values. The reference to AkzoNobel Aerospace global color numbers means that the color may be matched in a number of different topcoat options. A separate fan deck with these same "Inspirational color solutions" is also available for aircraft designers to give them a better visualization of the color in a larger representation. Color samples and reflectance values are approximate and should only be used as a guide in planning the livery design. The color brochure and fan deck represent only a small portion of the colors available from our wide array of product offerings. AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings offers exceptional color matching capabilities in a variety of colors, finishes and special effects. We hope this new guide acts as your inspiration to your imagination. ‘We have a number of brands in our market sectors, each with it’s own identity but the problem was that there was no fixed identity across all products that linked them to AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings’, said Andrew Richardson, Global Market Director.

‘If someone saw a name but did not recognize it as being part of our portfolio, they might not have the same confidence in the product if they hadn’t used it before. This lead us to look into creating a family look for our brands’. The new family look for the AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings product range is now being rolled out globally. Some brands are being developed for specific markets, such as Intergard for land defense coatings and Aeroshield for air defense coatings. One thing is certain; that if you see a product with the new family identity, you can be assured that it brings with it the quality, performance and service that you expect from AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings. The Ultimate Solution for Touch Up and Repair Work Spray2Fix is the new brand name for AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings’ line of two component aerosol products. Spray2Fix is engineered to contain multi component products in a convenient, easy to use package that saves time and reduces waste. Spray2Fix Try not to get carried away!

This technology is capable of producing a high quality finish with spray gun performance in an aerosol can. The delivery of paint is faster than a normal aerosol and the fan is larger. The nozzle tip may be rotated to produce a horizontal or vertical fan. All of these features contribute to the “spray gun performance” of the product. Spray2Fix has been available in the Americas for several years. It was first introduced into the Air Defense market in a 400 ML size for MIL-PRF-23377, TY I CL 2, primer and MILPRF-85285, TYI, topcoat. Recently, a new 250 ML size has been introduced approved to the same Military specifications, but we also received approval for MIL-PRF-85285 TY IV. The products are approved by the US Navy and are listed in their 01-1A-509 Corrosion Manual. The US Air Force has also endorsed Spray2Fix and lists these products on their official website. The Commercial MRO aftermarket has embraced the Spray2Fix concept for touch up and repair work. Available in several primers and Eclipse gloss topcoats in both 400 ML and 250 ML sizes, time savings and waste reduction make the product a success. You no longer have to measure small quantities of different components, set aside and store the

original containers, and clean up equipment and containers after the repair is complete. All the components and equipment are in one single can ready for activation and use. Clean up is as easy as spraying until the spray runs clear. Disposal is in accordance with state, local and federal regulations. Spray2Fix, Alumigrip 10P8-11 will be available in the 250 ML size in the coming months. This primer was selected for the General Aviation Market to assist with small area repairs and touch up work. For assistance with current available Spray2Fix products in the Americas, please contact your local Sales Representative or the Customer Service Department in Waukegan, IL, USA. Spray2Fix will be available to the rest of the world in the coming months. Please watch for an update in the future publication of Reflections for an announcement on the official launch of Spray2Fix products for Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific. Human Interest 11

Something beautiful You have these days when something starts small and ends up really big. International Technical Consultant Paul Helsloot experienced that when he was doing some small jobs in his daughter’s house. “Dad, can you do something for us?” was the casually asked question. Paul’s natural response was “Sure, what can I do?”. Daughter responded ”Can you spray some chairs?” And added that it was for a charity organization called “Guusje Nederhorst Foundation”.

Her husband Dinand Woesthoff (who is the lead singer of the band Kane) started the foundation helping those children that really need help.

Guusje Nederhorst was a well known actress in The Netherlands who died six years ago of breast cancer.

In Amsterdam South East a child care facility was modified into a Woezel and Pip garden with the help of the foundation.

In the last months of here life she wrote children's books called Woezel and Pip. Her stories were given illustrations and sold in book form after she died. Ask the expert...

Aerospace Color Center Moscow

AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings production sites have a baby brother On June 8th this year, following a long and fruitful 30 years of business in Russia, AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings held the official opening in Moscow of its latest investment in Russia, “The AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings Color Center”, known within Aerospace as ACC3. Ask the expert...

Andrew Smirnov [email protected]

The opening of the ACC was well received by a number of VIP customers who were invited to attend. These included a number of the major Russian airlines, OEMs and design bureaus, who thoroughly enjoyed the experience and expressed a high regard for the investment in the new facility. The Aerospace Color Center is fully compliant with and approved to the necessary International Quality Management Standards, including AS9100 and ISO 9001:2008. This allows color blending of aerospace coatings for both the Commercial Aviation and Air Defense markets and include not only high solids exterior coatings but also water based cabin coatings from the AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings range. The site is also the home to the new Training Center of AkzoNobel Car Refinish Business Unit. This means that Aerospace Coatings training courses can be accommodated to support the local market. AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings’ Commercial Director Jan Gerrits made no attempt to hide how proud he is of this ‘baby brother’ to the production and blending facilities in Waukegan (US) Leicester (UK) and Sassenheim (NL):

MI 8 - Versatile workhorse gets a make over

Training in Russia, Aerospace style

When many people were enjoying a well earned Summer Holiday, AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings' Technical Consultant, Zoran Radosavjlevic, was making his way to St Petersburg, Russia to the Spark MRO facility. He was on his way to carry out some special application training and assist in the painting of a very unique MI 8 helicopter as it was going to be painted in a new ‘Special Effects’ livery.

On Monday August 23rd, AkzoNobel Aerospace Coating’s International Technical Consultant, Zoran Radosavljevic and Country Manager for Russia, Andrew Smirnov travelled to Domodedovo Aviation Technical Base where they presented an on site training program for the customer.

The products chosen for the application on the MI 8 included Alumigrip Primer Surfacer 10P30-8 and Aviox Finish topcoat. The end result was well received. The MI 8, very much a global workhorse, used for a variety of activities such as search & rescue, disaster relief, fire fighting and VIP transportation, went back to work.

“Our new ACC (Color Center) really meets to the growing demands of the aerospace industry in Russia, providing our customers with the best services, batch management, technical support and delivery performance. I am sure it will be very much welcomed by all of our customers, especially the airlines when they have their urgent ‘AOG’ orders. By focusing on our customer’s future and embracing entrepreneurial thinking we prove our commitment to AkzoNobel values and really answer ‘tomorrow’s answers today”

A surprise remained for Zoran on August 14th, when AkzoNobel Aerospace Sales Manager Igor Ustinov arranged a gift and dinner for his 30th birthday.

The programme participants were very interested by the varied presentations given by the AkzoNobel personnel as well as getting involved in some practical work. Several primers, topcoats and ancillary products were applied and demonstrated before the training participants had to return to their regular duties. Following the on-site training at Domodedovo Aviation Technical Base, Radosavljevic and Smirnov returned to AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings base in Moscow. With a new color and training center (CRIC), AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings Moscow was ready to receive its first customers for training. This time Painters from several Russian customers (Aeroflot, Rostov, Komsomolsk, Somodedovo Technics, Transaero and S7Ingeneering) gathered with the AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings sales team to put the new facility to the test. Apart from presentations (in English and translated into Russian by Sales Manager Igor Ustinov), participants were guided through the practical part of painting, utilizing a large mock up in the spray facility. Everyone agreed that the new location was an excellent place to learn about and teach aerospace coatings.

Intergard “sizzled” at CBRNe conference AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings was invited to demonstrate its solution to decontamination of ground support vehicles to the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, explosives (CBRNe) Conference held by the US Army in June, 2010.

Scorching temperatures (94-98°F/34-37°C) and sweltering humidity of 80%, took its toll on Mike Bratcher, Field Technical Service Manager, during the application process. He took many rest breaks and drank plenty of water, but even with these extremely oppressive conditions, the application of all the Intergard products concluded with notable interest in this integrated product line. An Army truck was first cleaned and degreased by using Intergard 10750, a water based cleaning concentrate designed specifically for cleaning and de-greasing metallic and nonmetallic substrates and old paint finishes. This product contains anti-corrosive additives avoiding flash-rust on steel substrates left uncoated. After cleaning and de-greasing, Intergard 10330, a waterborne wax-based release agent was applied. This product facilitates the removal of the Intergard 10220 (a temporary protective coating). The last product to be applied was the Intergard 10220. Intergard 10220 is a waterborne temporary coating that applies and removes easily. It is designed as a solution to quick camouflage needs as a vehicle goes into different environments that may require a different color camouflage. It can also protect plastics or

painted surfaces from mechanical damage, is infrared reflecting and solar heat reflecting, and can have chemical agent absorbing properties. The coating may be peeled off to remove it or a high pressure water blast method may be used. Both methods were demonstrated at the conference and avoid the use of Chemical Strippers and costly disposal costs. Even with the soaring temperatures, the turnout for the demonstration was very good and included attendance by the Army Joint Program Management for Decontamination and the General from the Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense. The feedback was quite positive by all that attended.

The combination of all Intergard products used (10750, 10330 and 10220) as an integral part of a total solution for decontamination was a sizzling success! Ask the expert...

Beaky and Bruce A match made in heaven!

100 years ago, Captain István Petróczy of the AustrianHungarian Monarch’s army gained his pilot’s licence in a Wright bi-plane. It was July 22nd 1910, and the history of Hungarian Military Aviation had begun. This year’s Kecskemét International Air Show, returning after a one year break, was a worthy celebration of Captain Petróczy's momentous flight, and visitors were looking forward to a great event.

The story of Air Show Kecskemét (Kecskeméti Repülönap) began on a historic moment in 1990 when it was the first occasion for civilians to see Military Jets from the Air Forces of the Warsaw Pact countries and the United States Air Force together. (The former was represented by two MIG-29s, the latter was represented by two F-16s). After a short break the event returned to Kecskemét in 1997 during which the Hungarian Air Force carried out their evaluation of new aircraft for their Fighter Procurement competition. The competitors were; Saab’s JAS 39 Gripen the (eventual winner), the F/A-18 Hornet and the Dassault Mirage 2000.

In 2008, the 70th anniversary of Hungarian Military Air Force, it was decided by the organizing committee to paint a MIG-29 in a very interesting paint Anniversary MIG-29 Demonstrating 70 years of Hungarian military aviation.

Entering a new millennium, the level of the event was increasing in size and popularity. This leads to new and more interesting aspects of the show, such as demonstrations in 2003 of precise formation flying and from world renown flights including; The Turkish Stars, Italy’s Frecce Tricolori and France’s Parouille de France. It was in 2005 that AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings first supported the Air Show when three aircraft, two L-39 Albatros Trainers and one MI24 attack helicopter were painted in paint supplied by AkzoNobel.
