The Bridge Educational Trust The Bridge Educational Trust (Registered Charity No 1068720) was established in 1990 in memory of John Bridge, the last of the family which founded the Piddle Valley School in the middle of the 19th century. The objectives of the Trust are educational, and grants are given primarily to those wishing to study at a school, college, or other educational establishment. Applications are particularly welcomed from residents of the Piddle Valley and its immediate neighbourhood. Normally applicants should be nearing the end of their school careers or have left school, though younger children with special educational needs may be considered. At the Trustees’ discretion, expeditions or travel groups for young people which are organised for scientific or cultural purposes may be eligible, provided they contain an educational element. The Trustees give priority to cases involving hardship or difficult family circumstances and where, without some assistance, the desired education, course or activity would not be possible. Special consideration is given to older people who may wish to start training for a particular career or other purpose after normal education has been interrupted. During the past year grants made by the Trust have included those to help university students with accommodation costs and equipment; to provide support for children with specific learning difficulties; and to provide training for adults hoping to change career. Meetings of Trustees to consider applications are held in March, July and November. Those wishing to apply should obtain an application form by writing to The Administrator c/o Piddle Valley First School, Piddletrenthide, DT2 7QL or by emailing [email protected]. Applications by post or email should be received not later than the 15th of the month before the meeting at which they are to be considered. Further details of the Trust can be found at www.bridgeeducationaltrust.org.uk but if you feel that you would like to discuss a possible application with one of the local Trustees, please contact one of the following: Rev Tony Monds (348211), Rex Goddard (348363), Sue Nicholas (348436), Hannah Murphy (348564), Richard Drewe (348253), Nick Harland (348272) Richard Drewe, Chairman 22

From the editor ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Wishing you a very Happy New Year and a prosperous 2015! I have taken over the reigns for this issue as Dot and her husband are busy selling their house. Sadly for us, but exciting for them, they will be moving away from the valley to start another chapter nearer their family. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dot for all her hard work and efforts to produce such a varied and informative publication. As ever, we are grateful for all the News & Views submitted for this issue. However, we are very reliant on your input so please do not hesitate to send in contributions, large or small. This newsletter is a fantastic way of communicating with others in the community – whether you wish to promote an event or let us know about important news or happenings. We would also welcome features about the history of the area and general local interest. Any feedback and suggestions on how to improve the magazine will also be gratefully received along the way! You can submit material by email to: [email protected], or by hand/post to the PVNV Postbag, PO & Village Stores, Piddletrenthide, DT2 7QF. As we start the new year we are looking for volunteers to help keep News & Views operating succesfully – our Hon Treasurer Susan Chance has kept our finances in very good order but has decided the time has come for a new and younger person to take the reins. We also need someone to take on the Advertising role, so if you can help with either of these tasks, then please do get in touch, we would love to hear from you. Julie Bennett

News from the Vicarage ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

TWELFTH NIGHT; OR WHAT YOU WILL Shakespeare wrote his play called Twelfth Night; or what you will as an entertainment to end the Christmas festivities. In his day, Twelfth Night, the evening before the Feast of the Epiphany (which Feast always falls on the 6th January) was a time of great festivities and dressing up in costumes. The confusion of identity caused by these costumes is, of course, an element in the bard’s play. Today, we often seem a bit jaded by the time Twelfth Night arrives and our celebrations are perhaps somewhat more muted than those of our ancestors. The Epiphany is the feast at which the Church celebrates the coming of ‘three kings from Persian lands afar‘ to worship the Christ-child. In fact, we don’t know for sure how many there were or whence they came – Matthew’s gospel refers only to ‘wise men from the East’ but Christian tradition has numbered them as three (after the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh that they brought) and named them as Casper, an Indian scholar, Balthazar, an Arabian scholar (or, in some traditions, from Africa), and Melchior, a Persian scholar. The significance of the Feast of the Epiphany is that Jesus is recognised by Gentiles, non-Jews, for who he is. Not only is Jesus ‘born king of the Jews’, the longed-for Messiah for the Jewish people, he is the King of all creation before whom the wise men ‘knelt and paid … homage’. The wise men are models or ‘types’ for us today since most of us are not Jews but Gentiles. Their search for Jesus had been a long one involving considerable hardship on the journey – as T S Eliot so vividly imagines in his famous poem, Journey of the Magi. Eliot has the wise man who tells his story in the poem describe their arrival in Bethlehem as ‘satisfactory’ which may seem to us a little understated! But perhaps Eliot had in mind that the birth of Jesus ‘satisfied’ ancient prophecy as part of God’s eternal plan for our salvation; the new age has dawned with the birth of Jesus but has yet to be fully realised. In the meantime, Eliot’s wise man felt ‘no longer at ease here’. He realised that his world had been changed dramatically by the birth of Jesus and he was wrestling with its significance. For Christians, as for the wise man, that is something that we will never fully comprehend in our lifetimes but we continue to reflect upon it with joy and awe as we recall that ‘King of the Jews’ was the sign that Pilate had pinned to the cross upon which Jesus died not just for the Jewish people but for the whole world before God raised him from death to the new life which we all may share. That is indeed a cause for celebration on Twelfth Night or any other. Rev Tony Monds The Vicarage, Piddletrenthide T 01300 348211 E [email protected] www.piddlevalley.info

ROSE MARION COSH (1938 – 2014) Rose was born at Marnhull where her parents Albert and Nellie Elsworth ran a shop but after a year they moved to Moreton, where brother Jim was born. Albert was away in the RAF during the war so mother and the two children came to Alton Pancras to live with Rose’s aunt Louisa Allen and her uncle Bill at Number 1 The Terrace. It was very cramped there so in time they were able to move to number 2. Later, after her marriage, she would live at number 3! Mother Nellie became village postmistress in succession to the Clarks in 1946 at a salary of £56.11.0d per year. With so few phones in the village, young Rose was always being sent to various addresses to deliver messages, getting to know the village, and villagers, quite well. The advent of local supermarkets made the shop less viable so its last years were just postal services, the business offered for sale in 1976 for £15,500.

In 1970 Rose married Eddie Cosh of Charminster, who worked for the council on road maintenance, mainly driving lorries. Later, with son Gavin, they moved into the relatively-new 2 Boldacre where she was to live until declining health in 2012 required a move to Sherborne. Rose loved Alton Pancras and its people but she also enjoyed an adventure; a keen tennis fan, she had visited Wimbledon during its famous fortnight and she and Gavin even visited friends in Egypt (not the Piddletrenthide one!). Back home, she loved the fact that from her Boldacre window she could see all five different houses she had lived in. Among the mourners at her Yeovil funeral were past village stalwarts Brian Ralph and Dick and Mary Collins – and Charlotte Gerard of Alton Mill , for whom Rose was her nanny in Newcastle-on-Tyne, days fondly remembered.

Alton Pancras

First, the three Boldacre houses providing the continuity for the recent arrivals mentioned last time.

AP

Duncan and Tracey Williams are locally well-known for providing music for all occasions, indoors or out, and fitness and weight reduction respectively. We leave the reader to guess who does what!

AP

The Critchell family have lived there since the 1980’s. Fran’s husband Keith died in 2006 and is commemorated by the handsome wrought-iron churchyard gate which he designed and built. Fran and partner Peter provide the continuity of Boldacre, along with ......

AP

.....the house immediately recognised by its immaculate garden, front and rear. John Squibb arrived with his parents c1960 and has turned his hand to most of the traditional country skills, including current church bell ringer. Several of Boldacre’s recent arrivals have been grateful to John and wife Stella for what might be called orientation information.

AP

The 39 villagers among the 50+ who attended the Neighbourhood Plan village meeting heard John Waterman announce that he was donating a piece of land behind Holcombe Mead to build a maximum of eight affordable houses to be run by a Housing Trust and incorporating a public village green, in recognition of his family having lived in the village for more than 100 years. The land was the site of his former hayrick “but there isn’t much call for them now” he quipped. The news was greeted with spontaneous applause.

AP

Villagers are still expressing concern at the speed of vehicles through our villages. The more often drivers (most of us!) see those yellow Speedwatch coats, the more they/we will remember to slow down. More volunteers are needed to join the team for occasional outings in AP, Buckland Newton and Duntish. Contact Ann Ridell for a friendly chat on 348161 or [email protected]

AP Thanks to all in the village who contributed the amazing sum of £231.13p to the Poppy Day Appeal. Sue Dean personally placed one of her village poppies on the grave of her cousin Private Frederick Stanley Hobbs – at Imfarta Military Cemetery, Malta. (see photo) [email protected] 34

The Plush Village Meeting at The Brace of Pheasants on the 3rd December saw a packed dining room with some residents hovering in the doorway as it was standing room only. The views of long standing residents gave rise to healthy discussion about the future balance of living in the village between young families and homes for older people as well as a concern for any rise in second homes. General News + Notices ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ APPEAL Detectives investigating an aggravated burglary in Piddletrenthide near Dorchester are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward. At around 7.40pm on Monday 15th December 2014 two armed and masked male offenders burst into a property near the main road. They demanded money and were looking for a specific man. When they realised that this person was not at the location they took valuable personal items and left the address. Nobody was injured during the incident. Detective Inspector Neil Devoto, of Western CID, said: “This was a targeted and frightening attack but fortunately nobody was hurt. “It was reported that the offenders, who were wearing dark clothing, left the area in a vehicle and loud music was heard coming from its stereo. “I am appealing for anyone with information about those responsible to come forward and contact Dorset Police. “I would also like to hear from anyone who saw people acting suspiciously in the area at the time or noticed the vehicle leaving the area.” Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police in confidence on 101, quoting incident number 15:340. Alternatively, call the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111 where mobile phone tariffs may apply.

Newsletter 12

Happy New Year to you all. At the end of last year we held a series of meetings in each of the villages to find out your views on the draft proposals for the Neighbourhood Plan. I found the meetings enjoyable and informative. It was gratifying to find that the vast majority of you are in favour of having a Neighbourhood Plan; however the devil is in the detail and there were different views on the Plan’s content. Thank you to all who came and filled in the Housing questionnaires. We have not yet had time to analyse these fully so unfortunately the results will be in the next edition of News and Views. (Because of printing deadlines I am writing this at the beginning of December with Christmas just two weeks away.) We have proportionally far more feedback from Piddlehinton than the other villages. This is in part due to a form being delivered to each of their houses so that they could be completed by people unable to attend the meeting. We think this was a good idea and so this month we will be doing the same for the other villages. I encourage you to fill these out – it is your plan and we need to know what you think. These will be delivered separately from News and Views so that all villages are treated in the same manner. A topic that was regularly brought up at the meetings were the existing problems with flooding and sewerage. Indeed it was the dominant issue for Piddletrenthide. The correction of the existing problems is out of scope for the Neighbourhood Plan which is about the future. But the Plan must not exacerbate these problems. It is clear that more information at a detailed level, only known by local people who experience the problems first hand, is needed to address this now and in the future, so we have included yet another questionnaire. We have enlisted the help of our MP Oliver Letwin who has agreed to visit the Piddle Valley later in January to inspect the problems that many continue to experience. Your response and supporting information will be greatly appreciated. Paul Johns, Working Group Chairman telephone 01300 348154 email [email protected] / [email protected]

Housing - both for open market and low cost for local people led by Malcolm Johnston

[email protected] / 01300 34869

Five meetings were held in November and December, one in each settlement, to consult on Neighbourhood Plan policies and housing suggestions and they were very helpful to the Working Party in providing many clear views and advice on our proposals. All were chaired by Geoff Wright an independent planning expert with extensive experience of Neighbourhood Plans. We are also very pleased that Jo Witherden recorded the meetings as she will be assisting us with the writing of the Plan and has very up to date knowledge of Neighbourhood Plan requirements having until recently been a senior planner in the WDDC Planning Department. Attendance at the meetings was generally good with 42 at Alton Pancras (plus 10 members of the Neighbourhood Plan team), 39 at Piddletrenthide (plus 12), 27 at Plush (plus 12), 25 at White Lackington (plus 12) and 52 at Piddlehinton (plus 15). A questionnaire seeking comments on the suggested development sites in each settlement was distributed at each meeting (with the audience being asked to take copies away for others) and the number of responses received to these (by the closing date of 8 December) was Alton Pancras 26, Piddletrenthide 14, Plush 7, White Lackington 8 and Piddlehinton 29. It should be noted that 70 responses have also been received from Piddlehinton residents from the questionnaires delivered to each address in that parish With the exception of Piddlehinton, the NP Working Group consider that the number of responses received may not accurately represent residents thoughts, therefore they propose to hand deliver questionnaires to every address in Alton Pancras, Piddletrenthide, Plush and White Lackington early in 2015, which will give everyone in these settlements the opportunity to complete a questionnaire. An analysis of all comments received will be carried out and acted upon by the Housing Group. A report will be published in the next edition of News and Views.

Finance led by John Cox, Chairman, Piddle Valley Parish Council [email protected] / 01300 348454 With the impending village and settlement meetings planned for November and December 2014, the Working Group considered the benefit of an independent facilitator and recorder. This decision was taken to ensure that the control and reporting of the meeting would be completely unbiased and funded from monies the Parish Council has received to produce the Neighbourhood Plan from Locality, Dorset Community Action and West Dorset District Council. The major proportion of this funding had to be spent by December 2014 and failure to spend the funding would result in any unspent monies being returned. 42

Sewage/flooding At the Piddletrenthide village meeting on 27th November, residents voiced overwhelming concern about both the sewage system backing up and flooding in the village. Whilst the Environment Agency does publish a map of flood risk zones the information is largely worked out by computer and may not reflect the real situation. As a consequence, the Working Group decided to send you a further questionnaire (included with this issue of News & Views) to seek information from all valley residents about these important issues. This detailed information would be beneficial both for future development planning in the Neighbourhood Plan and for residents in order to work together to try to resolve immediate problems. This information can only come from those who live with the problems. Subsequent to that meeting, a member of the Working Group contacted Wessex Water, and their query and Wessex Water’s response is reproduced below. We have also requested a copy of Wessex Waters Operational Management Action Plan. We are acutely aware of the sensitive nature of this topic to residents, however we believe it is a genuine issue, and hope residents respond with as much information as possible. If you have any such knowledge, please would you complete the questionnaire, marking locations on the map, and sending any photographs or other documents you may have by the 16th January to PVNV Postbag at Piddletrenthide Post Office & Stores. If you would prefer to forward the questionnaire and supporting information by email, then please send to [email protected] 1 Neighbourhood Plan Working Group Query to Wessex Water, 28th November 2014 : It is now some 11 months since my last communication, and with winter approaching I would like to know what works have been carried out in Piddletrenthide since the winter of 2013/2014 to mitigate the overflowing of the sewers, which has occurred here in the last two winters, necessitating the use of road tankers to remove the overflowing sewerageresult in any unspent monies being returned.

2 Wessex Water Response, 8th December 2014 : Thank you for your email of 28th November about our flood prevention work in Piddletrenthide. Since the construction of the combined sewer overflows in 2011, we are required to report to the Environment Agency on an annual basis and have continued to deliver an Inflow Management Plan. As part of this plan, we monitor the water quality in the receiving watercourse to confirm there is no detriment to the water quality from the screened overflows. This year we have recorded groundwater levels, sewer levels and water quality to monitor the performance of the sewerage system. We have carried out further sealing works where groundwater infiltration has been identified. WS Atkins, acting as our consultants, are carrying out further modelling of the system to review the performance of the current overflows and identify possible locations for additional overflows which would relieve the system and provide further protection. This is in the early stages and any proposals would require approval from the Environment Agency. As a direct result of the last two wet winters, an Operational Management Action Plan has been prepared which sets out the operational measures to be taken in circumstances of high groundwater levels. This has been issued to our Operations team. We have written to Dorset County Council to advise we will be objecting to further development in locations at risk of groundwater flooding and where no groundwater strategy is in place. We will be reporting again to the Environment Agency in April 2015, with an update on our work this year. I hope this is helpful. Yours sincerely

Ruth Steinhausen, Customer Relations

Broadband Most valley residents will have noticed the erection of new BT green cabinets at Wightmans Orchard in Piddletrenthide and The Cross, Piddlehinton, which are for the introduction of Superfast Broadband into most of the Piddle Valley area by Spring 2015, with the Egypt area of Piddletrenthide and Alton Pancras following in Summer 2015. With regard to the Enterprise Park, we contacted the Superfast Broadband team asking them why the Enterprise Park area of Piddlehinton was excluded, and have now received the following request from the Superfast Team:“Following your enquiry I have raised the Enterprise Park with my Superfast Dorset and BT Openreach colleagues. We think it would be valuable to have a meeting with the managing agent or owner of the business park to clarify how the network operates in this area and discuss options for the future. Do you have contact details for someone we could get in touch with to represent you on this matter?” We have responded, enclosing contact details as requested. 44

2015 visit to Longueville, Normandy.

A group of our Twinning members will be visiting our French village, Longueville, from May 28 – May 31st next year. Among the highlights, we are promised a horse drawn carriage drive out into the Bay of Mont St Michel as the tide ebbs, to see the oyster beds. We have chosen May Half Term as we are keen to welcome younger families to the Twinning; all the children are invited to spend a morning at a local primary school, while grown ups will be shown local places of interest by their hosts. You may like to visit the beautiful Christian Dior House, Mont St Michel itself or the Old Town in Granville, with its port and stunning views from the cliffs. Everyone will be made very welcome – you don’t have to speak French, as many of the French villagers are now learning English!

Event in Piddletrenthide at The Memorial Hall

Lady Maisery

This trio burst onto the folk scene with the release of their debut album, ‘Weave and Spin’ in 2011 to much critical acclaim. Their live performances created a real buzz, leading to a nomination for the Horizon Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2012. Fast becoming a force to be reckoned with on the folk scene, Lady Maisery proved with their second album ‘Mayday’ that they were happy to take risks and push boundaries, tackling challenging and political songs head on and highlighting their strength in getting right to the very heart of each song, be it intimate or epic. ‘Mayday’ reached the no.1 album slot in BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction ‘Top 10 Releases of the Summer’ and was made a ‘Top of the World’ album by Songlines magazine. As well as enchanting audiences with innovative re-workings of old songs and ballads, Lady Maisery break new ground as one of the first UK groups to explore the tradition of diddling or tune singing, which has nearly died out in England, but is still prevalent in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe. Whether singing unaccompanied, or with backing from their combined instrumental talents on accordion, harp and fiddle, be prepared to be enchanted by Lady Maisery.

DCC Trading Standards - Starting the New Year with a consumer problem? Now that presents have been unwrapped and we’ve fought our way through the sales, some of us will have found that something given or received isn’t as expected. Or perhaps that sales bargain has turned out to be broken, shoddy, misdescribed, or even downright dangerous, well help is at hand. The Citizens Advice consumer helpline and website is the first port of call to obtain independent, confidential and impartial advice about any type of consumer problem.

The helpline will help you identify whether you are due a refund or replacement and whether you can seek compensation for any loss you have suffered. Not only do you get clear, practical consumer advice but importantly for Dorset County Council Trading Standards Service, it is the way for you to report something to us. This is because we work in partnership with the Citizens Advice consumer helpline and automatically receive daily referrals from them letting us know why people are getting in touch. During 2014 Dorset Trading Standards received over 600 notifications a month about Dorset businesses. From these referrals we look to identify problem traders that need investigating to keep Dorset fair and safe. We also have access to the Citizens Advice consumer helpline national database and that means that we are able to gather information and intelligence to identify emerging trends that may affect Dorset. We can then use that information to focus our efforts on the things that really matter to you. The more calls the helpline receives, the better the intelligence picture becomes. We also want to work to keep Dorset’s economy growing. We know that many businesses want to do the right thing but perhaps need a bit of extra advice and support to be able to do that. We look to identify those businesses too and we offer that advice and support. So this New Year if you’ve bought something not as expected then lets resolve to use the Citizens Advice consumer helpline to help sort out our consumer problems and to report things to Trading Standards. Call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 040506 or visit www.adviceguide.org.uk

When is a peanut not a nut? The 14 allergens in food December the 13th is an important date for anyone who suffers from allergic reactions to food ingredients as from then all new food labels will have to clearly highlight any allergenic ingredient in their ingredient list. Perhaps even more importantly is that food sold without a food label, such as plated meals in cafes, restaurants and pubs, will also have to be accompanied by information about any food allergens they contain. This information could be written down, such as on a chalk board or menu, or can be provided orally by a member of staff. It’s no longer an option for a food business to say that they do not know whether the food they sell contains a food allergen or not. If I asked you to name the 14 major allergens in food recognised by Europe you’d

probably find it difficult after the first 4 or 5. Just in case you did want a go the 14 are listed to the end of this article! Businesses have actually had 3 years to implement the changes. Some food businesses made the labelling changes early, some have taken a bit longer, and some long shelf life foods will still be in circulation into 2015 and beyond until they are either sold or removed from sale as their date has passed. The 14 major allergenic food ingredients are: Cereals containing gluten; Crustaceans, for example prawns and crabs; Eggs; Fish; Peanuts; Soyabeans; Milk; Nuts; Celery (and celeriac); Mustard; Sesame; Sulphur dioxide, which is a preservative found in some dried fruit and alcohol; Lupin; and Molluscs, for example mussels, oysters and snails. Finally and if you are still with us, you’ll have noticed that a peanut is recognised separately from a nut. That is because a peanut actually grows underground and is rather an edible seed enclosed in a pod rather than a nut which is grown on trees. Perhaps the ridicule around food manufacturers in the past labelling bags of peanuts with a warning ‘ May contain nuts’ might not now seem so justified if they are made in a factory that handles nuts too! If you think a food business is not identifying their food allergens after the 13th December then Dorset County Council trading standards would be interested to hear about it. You can let us know by calling the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 040506.

The evening was punctuated by amusing and interesting anecdotes as our tour continued to France including Chateau gardens in the Loire and Monets garden at Giverny. We also had glimpses of otherlocations in Japan, South America and Italy. It was an enjoyable foray into the world of gardens . Piddle Valley First School ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The children at Piddle Valley have been enjoying a range of sporting events. Our Year 3 and 4 tag rugby team came first in a recent tag rugby festival against others schools within DASP. The Woodpeckers have enjoyed their topic on heroes and invited parents to an outcomes morning to share the children’s learning. A cake sale to raise money for ‘Help the Hero’ was very well supported by the parents. The children have been making olive bread to support their learning about writing instructions. Our celebration assembly is an opportunity to share all the great learning taking place throughout the school. The children enjoy receiving a certificate. Jayne Browne, Head Teacher

PTA Bonfire Night and Christmas Fayre The PTA of PVFS would like to say a big thank you to everyone who donated money to the school for the Bonfire night. Piddle Valley Parish Council ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Meetings The Piddle Valley Parish Council meets in Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall, normally on the last Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm. Meetings start with a “Democratic halfhour”, during which any local resident may personally raise direct to the Council any matter that affects the Valley community. So, if you have something important to say, please either contact your local Parish Councillor or raise it during the start of the next meeting. Next meetings are:

27th Jan 2015

24th Feb 2015

Waste Collection arrangements General Waste & Food – Friday 5th, 16th & 30th Jan, 13th & 27th Feb 2015. Recycling & Food – Friday 10th & 23rd Jan, 6th & 20th Feb 2015. Your containers should be put out by 7.30am on Friday. Please try not to put your wheelie-bins out before Thursday evening and take them in again as soon as possible after collection on Friday. Piddlehinton Parish Councillor Sara Milne has now been co-opted as a Parish Councillor for Piddlehinton.

Household Waste Recycling Centres (“HRC”) – Consultation The Dorset Waste Partnership are consulting on proposals to change the way the HRC’s operate – this may affect you if you use the St Georges Road site in Dorchester. It is important that you make your views known, especially as closure or charging will almost certainly lead to an increase in fly tipping. The DWP have advised “Residents are being asked to say how they might be affected by the following options: • Closing one or more HRCs. (Potential savings up to £100,000 a year per site) • Charging for entry at one or more HRCs instead of closing them. (Potential savings £65,000 a year per site) www.piddlevalley.info

59

PVNV Jan Feb 015 JB revised_Full version 18/12/2014 14:35 Page 60

• Closing all HRCs for two or three weekdays. (Potential savings up to £300,000 a year) • Charging residents to dispose of non-household materials, such as DIY waste and tyres. (Potential savings £250,000 a year) • Charging Dorset residents to use their HRCs in neighbouring areas, which the DWP currently subsidises. (Potential savings £70,000 a year) The consultation is open until midnight on Friday 13th February 2015. Residents can read the consultation information and complete an online questionnaire at www.dorsetforyou.com/hrc. Those unable to go online can pick up a questionnaire at the main borough, district and county council offices, all HRCs and libraries in Dorset.” Dogs Regrettably, there have again been complaints about the amount of dog waste which has been left on the public footways at Tullons Lane, the footpath from Tullons to Cheselborne Rd and the lane behind the Piddle Inn. Can we please ask people to be sure to take a bag with them when they walk their dogs and to dispose of the waste in their domestic rubbish collection. It must be remembered that leaving dog waste on a public thoroughfare is an offence and fines can be levied by the District Council.

Superfast Broadband By now everyone must have noticed the new green cabinets that have appeared at the roadside at Whiteman’s Orchard and at The Cross, signalling the imminent arrival of superfast fibre-optic broadband in the spring. Can we suggest that anyone interested contact BT now to confirm their interest, particularly anyone in White Lackington, as there does not seem to be a cabinet provided for them, yet. A service for Enterprise Park is not on the immediate horizon, it appears, but options are under review.

Road Closure – B3143 The road will be closed from Snowdrop Corner to Buckland Newton, Mon-Fri 0900 – 1600, from 26/01/15-20/02/15, for maintenance. No further information has been

given. Local diversions will be signposted. It is assumed arrangements for access will be available nearer the time. A copy of the notification and the Closure & Diversion plan is on the www.piddlevalley.info website, Parish Council page.

Community Transport There does not appear to have been any response to the appeal by both Puddletown and Cerne Abbas surgeries for co-ordinators and helpers for their Community Transport schemes to provide transport to medical care ( Pages 70 and 73 of last month’s News & Views). If anyone is able to help, please would they contact either Mike Chaney for Puddletown ([email protected]) or Lynne Dolder for Cerne ([email protected]).

Slyers Lane Wind Turbine Proposals With reference to comments in the local press, in emails and a statement made to the Parish Council at the November meeting referring to the apparent lack of support for those against the proposed wind turbines. The Parish Council has been active since Nov 2013 in making people aware of the development by publishing articles on the www.piddlevalley.info website and the News & Views bi monthly magazine. It was suggested to Broadview that they hold an open session at the school, which was carried out in the summer half term, and also agreed to the chairman of “noslyerslaneturbines” group giving a presentation at the Council’s October meeting. The Council has invited local residents to inform them of their views, but to date there has been no material response. The Parish Council could not comment on the application itself until it was formally lodged with the District Council, as the site lies outside the parish boundaries. Having received a formal request from the District Council to comment upon the application just before the last council meeting, the application was discussed with differing opinions. It was agreed by majority vote that a response be made to WDDC informing that there were 7 members against, 3 members in favour of the the proposals and 2 abstentions. Members and the public were then urged to make their own responses direct to the District Council in relation to the application. John Cox Piddle Valley Parish Council

Piddle Valley Losses in The Great War ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The year 1915 saw the loss of twelve men from the Valley – the highest of any year in the War. With one exception all these men were killed either on the Ypres Salient in Flanders or at Gallipoli. Ypres, or Wipers as it was known by the troops, was a beautiful mediaeval town, its main square dominated by the famous 13th century Cloth Hall. Yet, despite its beauty, Ypres was no stranger to war. Over the years it had been besieged, sacked or occupied by practically every European nation. On 13th October 1914, the 3rd Reiter Division of the Imperial German Army entered, only to be ousted by the British Expeditionary Force the next day. The town was to remain in British hands for the rest of the War. Ypres formed a salient – it punched like a fist into the German lines. To the defenders this meant that the enemy were on three sides, and the Germans took full advantage of their position. They shelled Ypres to a ruin. 26th January 1915 Sergeant William Ransome (Piddletrenthide) 1st Battalion The Dorsetshire Regiment In January 1915 1st Dorsets were at Wulverlghem, on the River Douve, some 5-6 miles south of Ypres. Serving with the battalion was 27 year old Sergeant William Ransome. Ransome was born in Yorkshire, but he joined the Dorsets before the War. He was married and made his home in Weymouth with his wife Elsie. It is thought that Elsie came from Piddletrenthide, hence Ransome’s connection with the village. He was killed on 26th January, a quiet day for the Battalion. During the small hours an officer’s patrol had been into no-man’s land and destroyed a sniper’s next. Then, at 9.10 in the morning, the trenches were shelled for a short while by a light gun. Ransome may have been killed during this shelling for he was the Battalion’s only casualty that day. William Ransome is buried in the Lindenhoek Road Cemetery at Wulvergham. Bin Roy / 01300 348227

Regimental and Military Cap Badges ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We are including in this and subsequent issues, details of the various regimental cap badges which were worn by men from the Valley who lost their lives in The Great War. Military cap bades at the time were numerous; most of their designs incorporated aspects of regimental history and traditions. The descriptions give some idea of those histories.

The Dorsetshire Regiment

In 1880 the Dorsetshire Regiment was formed by the amalgamation of the 39th and 54th Regiments of Foot. The cap badge shows honours granted to both of these regiments. The badge is surmounted by a sphinx and the name Marabout. These commemorate the 54th Regiment’s service in Egypt in 1801-1802 and their capture in August 1801, of Fort arabout at Aboukir Bay. In the centre of the badge is a castle and key to mark the service of the 39th Regiment in Gibraltar in 1779 - 1783 during the Great Siege. At the vase of the badge is ‘Primus in Indis’ a unique honour for the part played by the 39th in the Battle of Plassey in 1757. © photo The Keep Military Museum, Dorchester Bin Roy / 01300 348227

We wish you all a very Happy & Healthy New Year At New Year we will close on Thursday 1st January 2015 and reopen again as usual from Friday 2nd January 2015.

If not please book an appointment at reception as soon as possible as stock is running low.

Introducing the Friends and Family Test (FFT) The Friends & Family Test is a Government initiative that will started in December and replaces the annual practice survey. It is a way of gathering anonymous feedback about your recent experience and it will enable us to understand what we do well and what aspects of the care we offer could be improved. The responses you give are not linked to your name or your medical records in any way. You can feedback after an appointment, a telephone consultation, a home visit or phoning/attending the practice for administrative things such as a repeat prescription or blood results. The team at the practice will meet regularly to look at your anonymous feedback and to see what action can be taken. We will then share with all patients the feedback themes and anything we have done as a result of your comments. For more information please pick up a leaflet from reception or visit our website www.cerneabbassurgery.co.uk Welcomes & Farewells A warm welcome to Maria Irving who has recently joined the Integrated Nursing Team as The Integrated Team Community Lead, Ben,the Student Nurse, has now finished his placement with us. We wish him every success in his next placement and in his final exams.Congratulations to Dr Jenny Bubb - her baby boy named Sam was born on the 17th November weighing 6lb 10ozs. Both are doing well. Dr Kate Lanary will be looking after Dr Bubb’s patients until her return from Maternity Leave in April 2015. Fundraising Our Flu Season Raffle and donations for refreshments raised £230. All prize winners have been contacted. The money raised will be shared between Gully’s Place at Dorchester County Hospital and the Friendship Club based in Dorchester that supports local people with learning difficulties. The Poppy Appeal collected £45.82. Thank you for your generous contributions.

When the Surgery is closed - If someone is seriously ill or has had a serious accident dial 999 and ask for an ambulance. For urgent medical help or general health information & advice contact the Out Of Hours Service on 111
