RECENT ACQUISITIONS

Music Library NOTABLE ACQUISITIONS 1985-1994 M. Turner T H E previous report of notable acquisitions of printed music, published in 1985, covered some twenty-tw^o years, from 1964 to early 1985.^ The present survey covers a period of less than half this extent. Nevertheless it demonstrates that the Music Library, far from resting on its laurels, has continued to maintain the pre-eminence of its existing collections by a vigorous programme of acquisitions ranging widely both geographically and temporally, a programme that has been made possible by continuing support for the Music Library's purchase budget from the Directorate of Special Collections. The principal criterion for inclusion in this, necessarily highly selective, list is the intrinsic interest or importance of a given item, but a secondary consideration has been a desire to reflect the diversity encompassed by the Library's collecting policy. The form of this report broadly follows that of its predecessor. In Section I, the main sequence, items are arranged chronologically. However it should be borne in mind that printed music differs from printed books in that it is the exception rather than the rule for an edition to be dated by the publisher. Dates given in square brackets have therefore been assigned, with varying degrees of certainty, on the basis of external evidence. Titlepage transcriptions have been kept brief, and only numbered pagination or foliation is given (and none for sets of parts). With the exception of sixteenth- and seventeenthcentury editions the imprint is normally given in a standardized form. Certain types of publication have been dealt with much more summarily in Sections II-V. It should be assumed that each item is in score and is a copy of the first edition, unless otherwise indicated by a note or by the wording of the title-page. Annotations to the effect that a copy is unrecorded or is one of a very small number of recorded copies are to be understood as referring to information known to the main union-catalogues of recent years, as listed by O. W. Neighbour. His cautionary comments remain applicable here.^ Pressmarks are given wherever possible, but owing to other demands on staff time, especially planning for the move to the new building at St Pancras, a backlog of material awaiting cataloguing has accumulated. Consequently in some cases there appears, instead of the pressmark, the annotation ' U ' , indicating that the item is at present uncatalogued. Although this report, hke its predecessor, lists acquisitions of printed music, it will be noticed that in both cases a number of items are of interest less for their printed music 289

content than for the manuscript annotations or corrections that they bear. Even more such items could have been included. For example, in 1988 the Music Library bought at auction three sets of printed proofs of the full score of Elgar's Violin Concerto. Eventually it was agreed that because of their extensive corrections and annotations these printed proofs should be placed in the Department of Manuscripts, where they could take their place alongside the magnificent collection of Elgar autographs bequeathed by the composer's daughter, Carice Elgar Blake. ^ Hence they do not figure in this list. This is one small example of the difficulties caused to members of the staff and public alike by the long-standing arrangement, originating for very good and practical reasons in the early days of the British Museum, that printed and manuscript music should be housed in separate departments of that institution, and hence, more recently, of the British Library. Increasingly it has been felt desirable to unite the two related types of material within the Music Library. Organizational and staff changes partly connected with the forthcoming occupation of the Library's new home at St Pancras have at last made this possible, and the process has already begun. The compiler of the next report in this series will be in a position to record acquisitions of both printed and manuscript music side by side.

I I . EDITIONS WITH COVERS DESIGNED BY MODERN ARTISTS

In 1986 James Fuld and Frances Barulich published a short bibliography of late nineteenth- and twentieth-century editions of music whose covers or wrappers had been designed by well-known contemporary artists.* The article was a fascinating, if admittedly incomplete, first attempt to throw light on this hitherto undocumerited area of music bibliography. The Music Library had already acquired some of these items incidentally, so to speak. But many of them, especially those published in France, fell outside the normal scope of the Library's collecting policy for foreign material. An attempt was therefore made to acquire at least a representative selection of such publications, as far as funds allowed, and during the period under review fifteen items were bought. The artists represented include Leon Bakst, Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Eugene Delacroix, Raoul Dufy, Fernand Leger, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, Francis Picabia, Pablo Picasso and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Most of the items have been placed at the same press-mark, K.6.d.5. I I I . OPERA FULL SCORES O. W. Neighbour recorded summarily the acquisition of well over 200 opera full scores, and explained succinctly why such scores are very much rarer than might be supposed.^ During the years under review this collecting policy has continued, and full scores of 310

about 140 operas have been acquired. All the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century scores, and a very few of the more interesting scores from later periods, have been given entries in the first section of this report (see Jacquet de la Guerre 1694, Campra 1703, Colasse 1706, Rebel and Francoeur 1735, Laruette 1759, Trial 1771, Gretry 1786, Donizetti 1844, Weber 1849, Gounod 1867, Bizet [1880?], Offenbach [1883?], Hellmesberger 1899, Messager 1914, Kodaly 1933, Stravinsky 1949, Janacek 1958, and Martinu i960). IV. FIRST EDITIONS OF NINETEENTH-CENTURY VIENNESE DANCE Thanks to the help of one particular antiquarian music dealer, together with the purchase of odd items from other dealers, the Music Library was able to add to its collections eighty-six first editions of works by Johann Strauss the elder, Johann Strauss the younger, Josef and Eduard Strauss, Josef Lanner and Carl Ziehrer. Amongst these are the rare Opus I, Tduberl-Walzer, 1829, by the elder Johann Strauss (see Section I) and a number of copies with attractive pictorial title-pages, such as the portrait of Jenny Lind on the cover of Johann Strauss the younger's Lind-Gesange, 1846 (see Section I). With these acquisitions, the Library is well on the way to possessing a complete archive of first editions of the works by these composers. V. POPULAR AND EPHEMERAL BRITISH PUBLICATIONS Among its other tasks, the Music Library as part of the national library has always seen itself as having a responsibility to document British musical life by collecting as complete an archive as possible of British pubUcations and of other appropriate published material, such as foreign compositions setting texts by British writers or related in some way to British composers or performers. This involves the acquisition, quite cheaply, of much popular and relatively ephemeral music, especially of nineteenth-century songs, salon music, arrangements of favourite arias from popular operas and the like. Individually, such items would certainly not figure in any list of notable acquisitions. But collectively they make a significant contribution to the history of certain aspects of British music, and even to British social and economic history. It seems therefore worth recording that during the period in question the Music Library purchased over 800 such items from one dealer alone, and the total acquired from all sources must certainly be double this quantity. The Music Library was also able to buy a collection of 2,085 sets of parts of dance band and light orchestral music formerly in use in the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool.
