Some notes with pencil. € 35,Henry Barraud (1900-1997), French composer. He began to compose at the age of 16 when he was studying harmony and counterpoint in Bordeaux, but his parents intended him for the wine trade, and he trained for this in London. However, he decided on a musical career, and entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1926 to study composition with Dukas, fugue with Caussade and, on the advice of Schmitt, composition and orchestration with Louis Aubert. He was soon expelled from the Conservatoire for having written a string quartet (now lost) that was considered outrageously innovatory. With Rivier he founded the Triton concerts in 1933, and in the same year Monteux conducted a symphonic finale, following this in 1934 with his Poème. He helped to organize Resistance broadcasting in occupied France; after the war he was made head of music for Radiodiffusion Française, becoming director of the Programme National in 1948. Besides raising French standards of orchestral playing and choral singing, he gained for French radio a reputation for welcoming music of all types, particularly new music. He continued to compose, but much of his finest work was done after his retirement in 1965. (Jonathan Griffin and Richard Langham Smith in Grove Online)

First edition. Rare. Cover disbound. € 65,„On 17 December 1898 the first London performance of Dohnányi’s Quintet took place with the cooperation of Lady Hallé and the Pops Quartet. The success was so great that a second performance was demanded during the same season. Thir performance, which took place on 4 March 1899, was Dohnányi’s last appearance that season at a Popular Concert. It was at this concert that he premiered his new piano composition, the Passacaglia, op. 6, which he dedicated to Mrs. Oliverson. […] The Passacaglia was completed only on the stage; Dohnányi had to improvise the last bars, because he was so busy with his concert obligations and social activities that he could not find time to compose. Dohnányi would frequently program pieces on which he was still at work. Although he always believed that he would get them ready in time without having to rush them, his compositions were often not finished until the last minute, or, a sin the case of the Passacaglia, their endings were improvised. He cheerfully admitted he could work better by being forced rather than urged to complete something by a certain date.” (Dohnányi, Ilona von: Ernst von Dohnányi. 2002. p. 32.)
