..................................................................................2005-06 Season Outlook The 2005-06 Clemson women’s tennis team has many new faces and many unanswered questions. No longer can Head Coach Nancy Harris rely on three-time All-American Julie Coin, or even one-time honoree Alix Lacelarie. This year’s team make-up will be quite different from the past two years as Harris returns just three starters from last year’s NCAA semifinalist and top-10 nationally-ranked squad. The Tigers have just two upper classmen on the team, but they are hoping a strong recruiting class will contribute significantly and quickly to the program. Harris is eager to aid in the maturity and growth of this young team. “I enjoy the opportunity to coach young people and experience their excitement and enthusiasm,” she said. This team has that hunger and competitive spirit; they have high expectations for themselves as they understand that they are now part of a two-time NCAA Final Four and perennial top-10 program, the only women’s sports program to reach the semifinals of the national tournament in Clemson history. They look to continue that legacy. Senior Daniela Alvarez and junior Maria Brito have been members of both national semifinalist teams, and both figure to play towards the top of the lineup. Alvarez, who is from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, struggled during the 2004-05 season, nursing injuries for much of the season. However, she finished strong as she won seven of her last nine matches, including three in the NCAA tournament. “Dani has the skill to play very high in our lineup,” Harris commented. “She can be a very dangerous player and has a deadly backhand. She is our most experienced player as she has played both high and low in the lineup.” Mexico City native Brito, who Harris believes will emerge as a leader this season, earned her second All-ACC selection last season, playing primarily at the three and four positions. She opened the 2005 fall season winning the Furman Fall Classic flight three championship and Harris hopes she can continue that success. “Maria Brito is just a great competitor. I have never seen her give up in a match,” said Harris. Also expected to play at the top of the lineup is freshman Federica van Adrichem. Van Adrichem comes to Clemson after a very successful junior career in the Netherlands. In her first tournament as a Tiger, she competed at the number two position and won the Furman Fall Classic flight two title with a 3-0 record in the event. Harris anticipates great things from van Adrichem. “She has the style of game to be successful and the character to become a champion. She

is a very hungry and coachable player with a tremendous work ethic.” The Tigers’ third returning starter, Carol Salge, has just one semester of collegiate tennis experience after arriving at Clemson from San Roque, Brazil last January. However, she has set her goals high. Salge posted a 20-8 record in the dual season last year, including a 7-2 mark in the immensely talented Atlantic Coast Conference. “Carol gets better and better with every match she plays,” Harris commented. “She loves Clemson and loves being a Tiger. She has a great spirit and is such a team player.” Harris also welcomes the addition of Kathi Gerber, a sophomore transfer from Vienna, WV, whom she describes as a very disciplined, coachable player. Gerber will bring depth to the team and the ability to win some matches for the Tigers, as she demonstrated with a third-place finish in the flight six bracket of the Furman Fall Classic in early October. Clemson will receive additional help in January, as freshmen Marie Scriba and Alexandra Luc will enroll at the university. Both come to Clemson from France and will likely earn starting positions. “She is a fighter and has the key ingredients to be successful,” said the Tigers’ head coach. Harris commented on Luc, “Alexandra reminds me a great deal of All-American Alix Lacelarie. She is a very gifted athlete and, with experience, is going to be very successful at Clemson. Along with the influx of new players, the Clemson women’s tennis team also has two new members on its staff. Shelly Geer will handle the administrative duties and assist with the recruiting process this year for Harris. Although she is new to the tennis program, Geer is no stranger to Clemson. An alumnae, she previously worked with student-athletes at Vickery Hall, Clemson’s student-athlete enrichment center. Darrell Jernigan has previously served as the director for Harris’ summer camps and has been involved with the Clemson Youth Tennis Program. Jernigan played tennis at North Greenville College and Winthrop University before earning his degree from Clemson in 2001. Formerly, he taught biology and coached the men’s tennis team at West Oak High School in Seneca, SC. He brings a winning personality and strong leadership skills to the Tiger tennis program. With Jernigan’s assistance, Harris has set three primary goals for this young and inexperienced team. “First, we need to give this team the opportunity to settle in,” she stated. “Second, they need to do well academically, and then follow with some really good tennis. Then lastly, we want the girls to enjoy their

She is placing this year’s focus on doing the right things and taking the right steps to build a strong foundation, which can lead to team success. With such a young team, Harris has put together a dual-match schedule that she hopes will build momentum for the team and will give her underclassmen the opportunity to experience success early and maintain it throughout the season. However, she also believes that every match must be a challenge so that the team can continue to grow and learn. The Tigers begin the 2006 spring season with four home matches against nonconference opponents, including William and Mary, a top-20 finisher a year ago. Clemson then faces SEC rivals South Carolina and Georgia on the road before heading to the northeast for matches against Harvard and Brown. As the Tigers are primarily an outdoor team, with the benefits of playing in the southern climate, Harris explained the difficulty of playing the Crimson and the Bears, most likely, in an indoor environment. “We are able to play outdoors 95% of the season, which helps us prepare for the NCAA Championships. However, it puts us at a disadvantage to play Harvard further into the season, after we’ve already played some matches outdoors, to go back inside.” Once the Tigers return to Clemson, the heart of the ACC schedule begins. Clemson plays host to Virginia, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Maryland, NC State and Wake Forest this season; and the team will travel to Georgia Tech, Florida State, Miami, Duke and North Carolina. “The ACC gets tougher every year,” Harris said. “If it is not the finest conference in the country, it is certainly one of the top three.” Nevertheless, she feels that competing in such a talented league prepares her team for the NCAA Championships and the national spotlight. “We want to appear as a perennial Final Four team and winning a national championship is certainly the goal every year.” Harris just hopes that the answers to this year’s questions will bring continued success and that these new faces will be ones to remember.

second-place ACC regular season finish and the team’s second consecutive trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Academics have always been a priority for Harris, as evidenced by the success that her teams have enjoyed in the classroom in recent years. She has coached seven ITA Scholar Athletes during her tenure at Clemson and the Tigers were named an ITA All-Academic Team in 2002 and 2003. Harris has also coached 19 athletes who have been named to the ACC Honor Roll. The Tigers have recorded a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or better in each of Harris’ eight years with the program. Harris, who speaks Spanish fluently, has a long and impressive resume. She has participated in three Grand Slam events, including Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the Australian Open. Prior to her time at Clemson, she was a head coach at Auburn University in Montgomery for nine seasons, during which time she coached both the men’s and women’s teams for five years. She led the women’s team to the national championship once and the men’s team to the same honor twice. Harris is a five-time National Coach-of-the-Year Award recipient, having won the award in 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996 and 1997. In her nine years as the head women’s coach at Auburn-Montgomery, Harris coached 36 All-Americans and four Academic All-Americans.

Head Coach Nancy Harris ................................................................................. Harris competed professionally under the guidance of tennis great Pancho Segura from 1978 to 1982. She achieved a WTA world ranking of 226 before falling to injury. After leaving the tour, Harris returned to school to complete her degree and in 1984 she graduated cum laude with a degree in biology from Alabama. From 1983-89 Harris served two local tennis clubs in Montgomery, Alabama, as Tennis Director and Head USPTA teaching professional. The next challenge Harris chose to undertake was coaching at the collegiate level. Her first job was at Auburn University at Montgomery, where she served as the women’s coach for nine seasons and the men’s coach for five years. ’“It was a lot of fun, but at the same time it was very challenging.” Harris took the challenge head on and had great success, leading both teams to national championships. The Auburn-Montgomery women’s NAIA National Championship title in 1992 marked the first time a women’s tennis team from the state of Alabama won a national championship. She also led the women’s team to four national runner-up finishes (1991, 1993, 1994 and 1997). Harris led the AUM men’s tennis team to two NAIA National Championships (1995 and 1996), becoming the first female to coach a men’s team to a national championship. She is currently the only female coach in the country who has led both a men’s and women’s team to a national championship. Harris was attracted to Clemson for many reasons. She was especially impressed with the level of support Clemson offers the student athletes. Clemson established Vickery Hall in 1991 to assist student athletes academically. Due to their rigorous schedule of traveling and practice, time can be very limited. “There is tremendous support for a student-athlete to have the opportunity to succeed. I really feel the student is well cared for here. A great example is Vickery Hall. I have never seen anything like it; it is truly unique. It offers our players every opportunity to move forward academically while maintaining a busy schedule. We are very fortunate to have this support for our student-athletes.” Harris is a coach who gives of her time freely and is completely devoted to her athletes. This is another reason she was drawn to Clemson. At Auburn University Montgomery, she was responsible for the coaching, academic counseling and administrative aspects of both tennis teams. “I wanted to offer my players more,” says Harris, “This includes more of my time on the tennis court and more time devoted to the student-athletes. They can play at a higher level if they are given more personal attention. Since I have been at Clemson, I have had more time to be on the court coaching the athletes and I enjoy that so much.” Harris has had a life filled with activity and success. “I feel whatever road you take in life, it is most important to give your best effort and to perform as well as you can. By giving your best you know exactly where you stand and can make good decisions about your future. That is what I always tried to do, whether as a student or as an athlete.” To say the least, she has succeeded. Harris is married to Jose Caban. Caban is the Chair of Clemson’s School of Architecture.

...................................................................... Assistant Coach Darrell Jernigan

JERNIGAN Darrell

Darrell Jernigan is entering his first season as the assistant coach for the Clemson women’s tennis team, but he is quite familiar with the Tiger tennis program. He has worked with the Clemson Tiger Tennis Camp during the summers since 1988, serving as an instructor for 12 years. In the summer of 2000, he became the director of the camp under current head coach Nancy Harris and has remained in that position for the past five years. “I am truly excited to have Darrell join our staff,” Harris said. “I have known Darrell for eight years and have admired his ability to work with people. He brings a winning personality to our program and will help provide leadership for a young team.” While as the camp director, Jernigan was responsible for the running of the day-to-day operations, which included overseeing counselor duties, the payroll and parent contact, among other obligations. Jernigan also played an active role in reviving the Clemson Youth Tennis Program from 1998-2000, a program that serves area juniors players. He trained a large group of players and traveled with the more advanced athletes to various tournaments around South Carolina. Prior to his hiring as the Clemson assistant coach, Jernigan taught sixth grade physical science at Stevens County Middle School in Toccoa, GA for the second half of the 2000-01 school year. He was then hired as a biology teacher at West-Oak High School in Seneca, SC in 2001 and served the head of the science department until coming to Clemson. While at West-Oak, Jernigan also coached the girls’ and boys’ tennis teams. In his only season leading the girls’ team, the Warriors won the 2002 Skyline Conference Championship. Jernigan served as the coach of the men’s team for five season, guiding the team to a conference championship in 2003-04. He was named the Region Coach-of-the-Year after that season.

Jernigan is from nearby Seneca, SC, where he was a member of the Seneca High School varsity tennis team. He continued his tennis career as a scholarship player at North Greenville College from 1991-1993, receiving an associate degree in biology. From there, Jernigan attended Winthrop University and walked onto the Eagles’ tennis team, playing until 1994. He earned his a Bachelor of Science degree in Science Teaching-Biological Sciences from Clemson University in 2000. Jernigan and his wife Francis have two children, Alexis (8) and Riley (4).

Jernigan instructs sophomore Kathi Gerber.

...............................................................................................College Tennis 101 NCAA Championships The national team champion is determined by the winner of the NCAA Team Tournament held each year. The field of 64 teams is chosen from team results from the regular season and conference championships. The NCAA began a new format for the team tournament in 1999, changing to 16 regional sites of four teams each. The winners of the 16 Regionals meet in the finals. The NCAA selects the Regional sites at the end of the regular season along with the participating teams. Stanford University will host the 2006 NCAA Team Championships in Palo Alto, CA. Clemson has qualified for the NCAA Tournament nine times and has participated in seven regionals. Dual Matches Dual matches are played during the spring season when two teams compete against each other. Six singles positions and three doubles positions make up the dual match lineup. A

12

team can earn up to seven total points in a dual match. One point is earned for the winner of each singles match and one point is awarded to the winning team of two of the three doubles matches. Beginning in 1993, doubles matches are played first, followed by singles. Pro set matches are played in doubles competition, where a team must win eight games by at least a two-game margin. In singles matches, players adhere to regular set rules, first player to win six games by at least two games. The winner must win two out of three sets. The ITA The International Tennis Association serves as the governing body of collegiate tennis. It was originated to give coaches an avenue to express their views and recommendations to the NCAA. The organization now sponsors a number of tournaments and events, as well as the All-American team and collegiate rankings. College teams are divided into eight re-

gions by geographic area. Clemson is in the Southeast Region where it competes against other schools from Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

ITA Rankings The ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings are the official national and regional rankings for men’s and women’s intercollegiate tennis. The rankings are released once in the fall, preseason in early January and then on a weekly basis for the spring season. All rankings include team positions. However, individual rankings are not released every week. The ITA ranks the top 75 teams, top 100 singles players and top 50 doubles teams using a computerized system based on the ITA’s average points-per-match formula. A player’s overall win/loss record with extra points for wins over ranked players and bonus points for participation in certain tournaments, like Grand Slam events, are calculated in the formula.

Administrative Assistant Shelly Geer .................................................................

GEER Shelly

Shelly Geer is in her first year with the Tiger women’s tennis team, serving as the team’s administrative assistant and recruiting coordinator, but she is no stranger to the Clemson family. Geer earned a degree in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management from Clemson in 1986. She remained in the area after graduation and taught preschool for a number of years. Geer also worked part-time at Vickery Hall, Clemson Student-Athlete Enrichment Center, for nine years before head coach Nancy Harris offered her the position with the women’s tennis team. Her responsibilities include organizing travel arrangements for the team, securing equipment and assisting with recruiting efforts. Geer also helps with the team’s budget, officials, housing and all aspects that deal with the administration of the Clemson women’s tennis program.

“We are very fortunate to have Shelly on our staff,” Harris said. “She has an athletic background and has been around sports all her life. She understands the competitive nature of this program and has great people skills.” Originally from Wheaton, MD, she is married to Dave Geer, a former track and field star at Clemson. The couple has three children, Corey (17), Tyler (14) and Matthew (11).

Geer meets with a student at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.

Lacelarie was a member of the 2004 and 2005 NCAA Final Four teams, earning All-America honors in doubles with Julie Coin last year. The duo finished the season ranked #10 in the final ITA doubles poll and reached the round of 16 in the NCAA Doubles Championships. With Coin, Lacelarie had an 18-3 record for a .857 winning percentage that ranked sixth in Clemson history. She is also ranked fifth all-time with a .777 career doubles winning percentage, and her 80 career doubles victories are listed ninth in the Tiger annuals. Lacelarie was named the Most Valuable Performer of the 2004 ACC Tournament after winning two singles matches and two doubles matches to help the Tigers claim the conference championship. She was a two-time All-ACC honoree and was a member of the Clemson and ACC Honor Rolls.
