2011 SEASON REVIEW LMSS is among biggest and best sailing schools in the country: • We had an all-time high— 570 students. • We teach sailing with 21 420s, 6 Flying Juniors, 20 Optimists, 18 Prams and 3 Lasers and a fleet of 11 Inflatable Coach boats. • Last summer our Optimist, 420, X Boat and Laser teams competed in a wide variety of regattas with great results– seven TCYS Regattas, 420 Nationals, US Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship, X-ILYA, Smyth, Bemis, Jr. Olympics and ILYA 420 Championships. • We also ran racing clinics for the X and 420 sailors. • In August we moved Camp classes to Big Island to help the Minnetonka Yacht Club host Inland Scow Championships. • We have grown high school sailing spectacularly – 65 students for the spring season and 45 students for the fall. • Minnetonka was one of only 20 teams qualified for the High School May Mallory Championships held in Austin Texas. • Our teams competed in local regattas on seven of ten weekends during the spring and finished by winning the Minnesota State Championships.

Gordy Bowers  Head Coach Gordy Bowers grew up sailing on Lake Minnetonka. Through the years, he has achieved an impressive racing resume: Championships in A, E, C and MC scows, Finn, Laser, Taser, Y-Flyer, Flying Scott and the DN Iceboat. Gordy was the Head Coach for the US Sailing Team at the 1986 Goodwill Games and 1987 Pan American Games. Finally, Gordy served as Head Coach of the US Sailing Team at the 1988 Olympic Games where the US had the highest medal count of any country — a Gold, two Silver and two Bronze! Gordy and his brother Tom operated Bowers Sails on Lake Minnetonka for 25 years. Gordy has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Minnesota, and a law degree from the University of Wisconsin.

In the fall our high school teams sailed regattas on nine out of the ten available weekends from Varsity, J/V and Club levels. • Minnetonka’s Connor Corgard qualified for the Cressy SingleHanded High School National Championships, and Anders Ekholm/Joe Anderson from Blake went to the Great Oaks National Championship in New Orleans this fall. • Finally, Minnetonka High School was ranked FIRST for the Fall Season by the Midwest Coach’s Poll!!

2012 (40th!) SEASON PREVIEW The summer of 2012 will mark the 40th Anniversary of Sailing Magic at LMSS, and we will be celebrating by hosting the US Double-Handed Junior Women’s Championship— 80 girls from all over the U.S. competing on our Lake. LMSS will be working hard to ensure our girls are ready for this prestigious event • Our youth 420 and Laser teams will be sailing with the MYC for the second year. The Inland Yachting Association has included the 420 in it’s ILYA Championships in August. • We are adding more adult sailing classes. • Lastly, the Lake Minnetonka Sailing School will begin a New fund-raising campaign this winter to ensure future success.

Sam Rogers  Director Sailing every summer at LMSS in X-Boats and 420s, Sam is dedicated to seeing the program succeed on every level. Attending Breck School, Sam graduated from Hobart and William Smith Colleges where he was a 4 yr. Varsity sailor, earning All-American honors as a Senior. ptimist Beginning Racing is for sailors who took Fundamentals last year and are ready to transition into racing. We are combining Opti Fundamentals with Opti Beginning Racing to get the best of both classes. It is very important to take the time to learn the correct form and movement so that the proper habits are firmly established for a lifelong sailing success. Later, we add such basic racing skills as looking for the wind, understanding wave patterns, starting techniques, rules and racing tactics. We break down these skills into understandable on the water drills that are achievable and fun. During the later classes we will do some short course racing to add some competition and greater focus. Our daily teaching structure is always the same – a daily topic, lecture, diagrams, demonstrations, on the water drills and some racing. We review back on shore using discussion, diagrams,

he Opti Intermediate/Advanced Class is for sailors who want to race at a higher level with intensive coaching, regatta and travel experience.

We break out intermediate and advanced racers at times during our day to customize our instruction to sailing ability. Sailors sign up for the class and then they will be placed in an “Intermediate” or “Advanced” group according to ability and sailing experience. Each day, the two groups are taught together for concepts understood by everyone then separated into their respective groups. The curriculum includes classroom discussion, dryland drills, on the water drills and short races. Coaches provide “real time” feedback on the water and also answer questions in our debriefing sessions. In addition to fleet racing, match racing and team racing will be taught. Both groups will work to achieve their Captain and Admiral Seamanship. Our curriculum includes TCYS Regattas. In the morning, the team meets to discuss the racing priorities for the day. Between races, coaches talk with each competitor, providing advice and encouragement. After racing we review, attend the trophy presentation, put the boats on the trailers and return them to Lighthouse Island. Our Opti Race Team will be encouraged to race at the Minnetonka Yacht Club Sunday Evening Series, the Junior Olympic Regatta at Wayzata CSC and the ILYA Opti Championship at Pewaukee, WI. Rack rental is included in the tuition. Prerequisite: Ensign Seamanship Certification Next step: Repeat Opti Intermediate/ Advanced, add Small Group Training, move to Laser Advanced, or 420 Intermediate/Adv.

Most of our students will alternate skipper and crew positions because it is essential to know both ends of the boat. All boats, spinnakers and trapeze gear will be provided. Each day will consist of a theme — starting technique for example — followed by discussion, questions, demonstration, practice drill and short fleet or team races. On-the-water feedback will reinforce the daily theme. At the Twin Cities Youth Sailing (TCYS) Regattas our teams charter host 420s for a nominal fee. If necessary we bring our 420s. Between races, each competitor talks to their coach for advice. After racing we review the day. The 420 Race Team will be encouraged to participate in the Junior Olympic Regatta at Wayzata and the ILYA Championships at Madison, WI. The school provides 420s. This class is limited to 20 students. he single-handed Laser weighs only 125 lbs, is fast, responsive and a true test of a sailor’s athleticism. Our Laser Advanced Race Team uses all 3 Laser rigs: Full-rig, Radial and 4.7. The normal weight ranges for the Laser rigs are: 155-195 lbs for Full-rig, 115-160 lbs for Radial-rig, and 95-120 for 4.7. The 8-week Advanced Laser session (with 4-week options) for students ages 12-18 makes boat speed and handling a priority. Each day starts with a theme, based on the sailors’ needs, along with the wind and wave conditions. As a team, we have discussion, questions, demonstration, on-the-water feedback during practice drills, and short races followed by a debriefing. At the TCYS Regattas in the morning, the team meets to discuss the racing priorities for the day. Between races, each competitor talks to their coach for advice and encouragement. After racing we review, attend the trophy presentation and put the boats on the trailers. Most Laser sailors own their own boats, but we will charter 3 Lasers at $750 each for weekday class. Note: We have only 9 Lighthouse Island Laser storage rack spaces at $90 for the season for Laser Race students only, first come, first served. Once filled, more space is available on Bug Island through MYC at 952-474-4457. Match Racing, Small Group Training and Clinics Match Racing

Small Group Training

Our Match Racing Class will use the 21 foot, 3 person Yngling keelboat with main, jib and spinnaker. Each crew member will learn the specialized speed techniques, tactics and rules of match racing. Match racing from pre-start to finish develops confidence. For 2012 we are opening this class to adult and youth sailors. A great opportunity for MYC sailors! The popularity of Match Racing is growing world-wide, and is now utilized in the Olympics and in college sailing.

Small Group Training (SGT) can give your advanced sailor more structured time on the water. SGT is limited to 4 boats per group. All sessions will be coached by Gordy Bowers, LMSS Head Coach. For 2012 we are opening this class to adult MYC sailors. After June 1 all unused sessions will be allocated first-come, first-served. Questions? Call the LMSS office at 952-404-1645.

oin the excitement and be part of a nationwide phenomenon — the fastest growing and only co-educational high school sport in America. Our teams (Blake, Minnetonka and Breck) train on Lake Minnetonka and compete successfully in weekend local, regional and national events. This fall, MHS was ranked 1st in the Midwest in the MISSA coaches poll. There are two seasons, Spring and Fall, each 8 weeks or longer, depending on ice-out. We start the spring season with dry land training practices, and progress to Fleet Racing, Team Racing, Match Racing and Two-boat Testing. The High School Sailing coaching staff is led by former Olympic Sailing Team coach Gordy Bowers. The price includes the use of LMSS 420s, FJs, coaching support and assistance with team organization. It does not include regatta fees, school athletic fees and regatta travel expenses. We will work with even one sailor to grow a high school team. Call 952-404-1645. What To Bring

Students will spend most of their time outdoors. 1. Students are required to provide their own US Coast Guard Type III or higher PFD (lifejacket) that fits properly. Students must wear their PFDs while on any dock and while aboard any sail or power boat during school hours. 2. Proper shoes must be worn at all times. Water-compatible, tie-on footwear, Velcro-fastened sandals, aqua socks or sailing boots are acceptable footwear. Flip-flops are not acceptable. 3. An extra change of clothing should be stored in a waterproof bag (like a Ziplock) in a backpack/duffel bag. You should expect to get wet, so bring or wear your swimsuit and have your own towel. Sunscreen and sunglasses are also strongly recommended; please put on sunscreen before you arrive for class. Remember to bring windbreakers and/or sweats for cloudy or windy days. 4. Reusable Water bottle. (Reusable to be green.)

Students attending classes at the Lighthouse Island must bring their own bag lunches. Purified drinking water is available. Staff members are US Sailing-certified instructors who have also received American Red Cross First-Aid, CPR and Water Safety training from the Minnetonka Community Education Department. Our curriculum is developed from the US Sailing Certification Series, the national standard for quality sailing instruction, as well as proprietary LMSS, Inc. teaching systems.

Water Safety Requirements

Parents must certify their child’s swimming skills. All students will be given a swimming checkout on the first day of class. This will allow the instructors to check each child’s swimming abilities. The checkout will be with lifejackets on and will include: 1. Swimming 50 yards unaided. 2. Treading water for 1 minute. Children will also be given a water orientation to learn self-rescue techniques with a sailboat. Failure to complete the swimming check-out will result in the child being dropped from course without a refund.

Discipline

Behavioral problems will not be tolerated. First time offenders will not be allowed to participate in their chosen activity for an appropriate period of time. Repeat offenders will be expelled.

Weather Conditions: Calm, High Wind, or Rain Storms

Classes will not be cancelled due to weather. Outdoor sailing-related activities are complemented with fun games, educational sailing videos and activities such as volleyball and swimming (with PFDs on). We will also work on progress toward the the appropriate Seamanship Level.

Boat or equipment damage

In the unlikely event of significant damage to boats, sail, spars or other equipment, the responsible student/parent is expected to pay for reasonable repairs.
