1. The rivet body is inserted in a hole in the materials to be joined. 2. The tool is actuated and the jaws of the power operated or manual POP rivetool grip the mandrel of the rivet. 3. The rivet is set by pulling the mandrel head into the rivet body, expanding it, and forming a strong, tight, reliable joint. At a predetermined setting force, the mandrel breaks and falls away.

Advantages of POP Blind Rivets. The ablility to set POP brand rivets without the need for access at the back of the work makes their use mandatory in many instances. However, their many additional advantages make POP brand rivets the logical choice in numerous applications where the blindsetting feature is not of primary importance. Following are some of these important POP brand rivet advantages compared with conventional fasteners. 4

The body diameter of a POP rivet is measured in 32nds of an inch, i.e., 6 size equals 6/32" or 3/16" body diameter. The POP rivet gauge is designed to help you determine the length of a rivet. Place the rivet in the appropriate size slot flush to the side of the gauge and measure the length from under the head to the end of the body, as shown. The length determines the maximum grip capability and is measured in 16ths of an inch, i.e., 4 equals 4/16" or 1/4" maximum grip.

POP Power Rivetools 5000 Series Air-Hydraulic Rivetools As shown on pages 24 and 25, power-operated tools are available in two versions. The standard PRT/PRG version and the MCS version with vacuum Mandrel Collection System.

POP’s tools feature rugged, lightweight construction, ergonomic design for balance and comfort, and power for productivity.

5200 Air-Hydraulic Tool The newest line of POP rivetools is the 5200, designed for longhaul, midrange riveting. Powerful enough to set all rivets up to and including 3/16" stainless steel, this tool has a new stronger design, and yet is smaller and lighter than other tools in its class. Its size, weight and balance reduce worker fatigue. And it’s easy to maintain. It features a revolutionary air-return head design that minimizes moving parts and repair requirements.

5250 Air-Hydraulic Tool A variation on the Model 5200 tool, designed specifically for comfortable vertical riveting on an assembly line or workbench. The 5250 In-Line tool eliminates awkward wrist and finger positions, reducing worker fatigue. Powerful enough to set all rivets up to and including 3/16" stainless steel. The MCS model is provided with large capacity remote collection container.

5400 Air-Hydraulic Tools The most powerful tool in the POP line, the 5400 can set even the strongest high-strength rivets – including 1/4" stainless steel. And the long stroke version ( 1" stroke) makes it possible to set them in a single trigger-pull.

HOW TO INSTALL L

d

1. Thread JACK NUT insert onto mandrel of installation tool, then insert all the way into predrilled hole until flange is firmly against mounting surface.

Standard JACK NUT Threaded Inserts are manufactured of steel with commercial zinc plating. Brass is available upon special request (brass requires a 50,000 piece minimum order).

3. Pass machine screw 2. Fully collapse through part to be insert, then remove fastened, then installation tool. tighten until snug.

All JACK NUT threaded inserts can be supplied with coated flanges. Two types of coatings are offered. The first, called Raintite®, is used for sealing ambient moisture. The second is a hard plastic coating (PVC) which is used in areas where additional protection is needed against scratching (for example, painted panels). Both can also assist with galvanic corrosion concerns.

General Design Practice

Channel Sections: The success of any fastener depends on how well it’s applied and POP brand blind rivets are no exception. Careful design will produce good fastenings. Some of the variables to consider are: • Joint type, configuration, thickness, and material • Hole size • Tool access • Rivet size, material, and spacing • Tightness of clinch • Hole type The material that follows will provide a useful planning guide for most applications. In addition, we offer the services of our engineering staff to help with unusual requirements.

Pivoted Joints:

Poor

Good

Where narrow channels must be assembled, check clearance for adequate tool width. Alternately, set rivet from the underside – or widen the channel section – or use one of the available POP Rivetool nosepiece extensions that can add up to an inch in length.

Fastening Soft to Hard:

Okay A

Okay B

Good C

Better D

Methods shown in A, B, and C are satisfactory for low-cost consumer products where some binding can be tolerated until the joint works in. Best is D, because it provides a small clearance between rivet head and work – easily accomplished through the use of a special nosepiece or extra-length mandrel.

a

Edge Clearance:

Poor

Fully Sealed Fastening:

Soft Material

Good

POP Closed-End Sealing Rivets should be specified for all of the many applications – where a fully sealed fastening is essential. As discussed earlier, this rivet design produces a seal that prevents passage of liquid or vapor at pressures up to 500 psi.

Angles and Formed Sections:

Soft-to-hard is sometimes assembled by using a backup washer and forming the secondary head against the soft material. Much better practice is to use a large-flange rivet and set the secondary head against the hard material.

Good

Good

Avoid obstructions that will prevent the tool from setting flush on the work. If this problem can’t be avoided, try reversing the rivet and setting it from the opposite side. Or reduce the length of the section causing the problem.

34

POP

®

For maximum joint strength, the distances from the rivet centerline to the edge of a sheet should not be less than twice the rivet diameter. Where joint strength is not critical, this dimension can be reduced.

Thick & Thin Assembling:

Head Clearance:

Satisfactory

Dome Head

Good

Countersunk Head

Poor

2x Rivet Diameter

Height and diameter of dome head rivets should be checked against specifications. Where no projection is permitted, rivets with 120° countersunk head style afford a truly flush surface.

Better

Wherever possible, set the secondary head against the thicker and therefore stronger material. Where the head must be set against the thinner material, use of a backup washer is desirable. However, POP brand rivets are successfully set against aluminum stock as thin as .020".

Finishing Strip

Because compressible materials do not provide a firm enough base for clinching action, the use of additional support is recommended. As shown, a flanged bushing should be used.

Poor

In tube-to-plate joints, setting the rivet against a flattened section, as shown in C, produces maximum rigidity. The joint shown in B is slightly less rigid but entirely satisfactory. For best results, the rivet should not extend through both tube walls as shown in A.

Plastics & Brittle Materials:

Finishing Strip

Extruded Sections:

Poor

Good

POP Rivets are widely used in assembling extruded sections because of the limited access and clearances often involved. As shown at left above, avoid setting against unsupported internal sections, which results in poor rigidity.

There are many possible ways to assemble housings or panels; those Depending on material Good shown here are the most common. In selecting your method, consider cost, Where the more fragile plastics are inappearance, strength, and thermal ex- volved, POP Soft-Set Rivets should be pansion. specified. Where the plastic is rigid enough to afford satisfactory clinching action, standard POP brand rivets can be set directly against plastics as shown Tight Joints: here.

C

Blind Side Clearance:

Multiple Assemblies:

Poor

Good Good

Because POP Rivets exert a high gripping force when clinched, the joint shown in A would be unsatisfactory. The methods shown in B and C are better ways to handle the same assembly problem.

As shown, a single rivet can be fastened through several members as long as temporary support can be provided to maintain proper alignment.

Before Setting

After Setting

This is the distance from the underside of the rivet head to the end of the mandrel before setting minus the combined thickness of the materials being fastened. Design must permit enough blind side clearance to allow a fully formed secondary head when setting the rivet.
