Proclaim Jesus Christ, Live in Christ, Serve! READ Bible Study: Old Testament Starts the week of Sept. 26

Written and taught by Pastor John Straiton, READ is a comprehensive overview of the Bible. The Old Testament will be offered during the 2016-17 school year and the New Testament in 2017-18. Classes meet in the Great Hall on Monday mornings, 10:30-11:30 a.m.; or Tuesday evenings, 7-8 p.m. Cost: $25 (Includes Old & New Testament Study Book.) For information call Dianne Nash at 651.762.9141.

New Member Class Sunday, July 10, 11:30-1 p.m.

Joining a church does not necessarily give you added perks. You don’t get the best parking spots, a discount off your offering or reserved seating on the holidays. HOWEVER, it does provide you with a sense of belonging to a community that believes in the same things you do. It’s about finding friends who will be there for you. Mostly it is about our Triune God, who is communal and continues to pursue and guide us no matter where we run. If you want to join St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, we invite you to a New Member Class on Sunday, July 10, at 11:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary building. The class will introduce you to the pastors, other new members and the various ministries at St. Andrew’s. Lunch served and childcare provided. Contact Ronda Sowada at 651.762.9139 or e-mail at [email protected] to register.

If interested, contact Bakken at 651.762.9140 or [email protected]. For more information go to fishingforlife.org.

Habitat for Humanity New Homes in Hugo!

Men’s Tuesday Morning Bible Study With Pastor John Straiton

A large group of men meet year round every Tuesday morning in the Great Hall from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. Come and make some new friends as you learn more about God’s word. Starting in September we will be focusing on Paul’s Letter to the Romans. Coffee and rolls are provided. Registration is not necessary. No fee.

New Recycling and Organics Collection System Help us care for God’s creation by using the new containers around campus and follow the labels to appropriately dispose in the correct bin. Recycling reduces air and water pollution, as well as conserves our natural resources. Recycling one ton of paper saves 7,000 gallons of water; recycling the average Minnesotan’s junk mail for a year would spare seven trees. Recycling a single aluminum can saves enough energy to power a television for three hours, according to the National Recycling Coalition.

GriefShare Thursday, Sept. 8 through Dec. 8 6:45 to 8:45 p.m., Sanctuary Building

In group discussion you will have an opportunity to share with people who understand how you feel, the pain of your loss, and start the journey from mourning to joy. Call Joanne Zehnder at 651.730.9073 for more information. Register online at saintandrews.org, or contact Lisa Grundtner at 651.762.9117 or [email protected]. Cost is $18 which covers all materials.

St. Andrew’s volunteers and their friends/family helped to build four new townhomes in Hugo over five weeks in May and June. Our meal/snack/beverage providers and site hosts did a great job keeping the volunteers happy and fed. We worked alongside volunteers from the AdvisorNet Financial group, inviting them to join in our morning devotions each day. Christ Lutheran in Marine staffed one day, and the women of St. Andrew’s provided most of the staffing for two designated “Women Build” days. We began May 16 by installing the trusses for the main floor and by our last day, June 24, the four-unit building was framed and exterior and roof sheathing completed. When fully completed, this site will have over 30 Habitat for Humanity (HFH) homes and will transform this neighborhood and the families who purchase these homes. Thanks to everyone who contributed to these four affordable homes! You helped to finance, build and provide for the needs of the onsite volunteers. Your contributions purchased $30,000 in materials to help build these homes. You can donate to the St. Andrew’s HFH at anytime by including a note that it is for HFH when you make your contribution. Two other church coalitions will continue building in July: Roof Raisers Coalition and St. Croix Valley Coalition. They include churches from White Bear to Stillwater and north to Forest Lake. Anyone wishing to join them can check the links at the Habitat for Humanity page in the volunteer section of saintandrews.org, as they often have need for more volunteers. Check out Larry Turner’s many photos of our volunteers on this web page too.

Back to School Countdown It’s that time of year again! Kids are preparing to go back to school. Let’s ensure that every child starts off the school year right with adequate school supplies, a sturdy backpack, a dapper haircut, and a new pair of tennis shoes! How can you help? You can help in many ways: 1. Take a tag off the giving tree in the Atrium/Narthex and bring back the requested item(s) by Sunday, Aug. 21. Choose from school supply items or backpacks. Please place donated items under the giving trees. 2. Set-up the school supply “store” on Monday, Aug. 22. Several shifts available. 3. Go shopping for any additional school items that we may need on the afternoon of Monday, Aug. 22. 4. Shop with our students as they pick out their supplies on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 23 and 24, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sign up for a two hour shift. We ask for adults only for this opportunity for the sake of confidentiality of the youth being served. 5. Do you cut hair? Sign up for a two-hour shift to provide backto-school haircuts for our students in need. We supply the chair, the drape, and the child! You bring the scissors. 6. If you’re not a shopper or are unable to participate in any of the above ways, we gratefully accept monetary donations so

that we may purchase all supplies necessary to have on hand. Last year, we served 247 children of all grade levels from the Mahtomedi, North St. Paul, Maplewood, Oakdale and White Bear Lake school districts. Thank you in advance for your support of this much-needed ministry.

NEW this year! Step it up for our kids! Help outfit our kids for Phy-Ed this school year by donating new or hardly worn athletic shoes. All sizes needed. Please place shoes in wooden bins in the Sanctuary and Great Hall or outside of the Community Resource Center in the Great Hall by Sunday, Aug. 21.

Empowered by God’s love, we help transform lives, communities and the world so that everyone may know Christ’s healing power. 6

Summer Volunteer Opportunities at the CRC Kids’ Activity Room Summer can be a busy time in the Community Resource Center kids’ area. With school out for the summer, many of the children from our shelter families spend their days with us. If you are 14 or older, consider signing up to help. Spend time with the kids at the playground, doing art projects, playing games, and more! Shifts are two hours in the morning or the afternoon.

Kids’ Community Meal Craft Leader This is a great opportunity for individuals, families, or small groups to plan and facilitate a craft project from 5:45-7:00 p.m. for the kids in attendance at our Thursday night free Community Meal. The kids so appreciate a fun activity to work on when they are finished eating!

Serve at Hope for the Journey Home Shelter St. Andrew’s is leading the volunteer effort at Hope for the Journey Home Shelter in Oakdale the week of Aug. 7–13. Hope for the Journey Home (HJH) is the shelter where our St. Andrew’s Community Resource Center families stay while they are in our program. Volunteer shifts are available in the afternoon (2:45 – 5:15 p.m.), dinner (5 – 8:15 p.m.), and overnight (8 p.m. – 9:15 a.m.). This is a great service to experience first hand the great work we are doing to help the families while they work towards stable housing. Youth age 9 and up may assist with an adult at the shelter. Contact Debbie Larson with any questions or to get connected with any of the above volunteer opportunities: dlarson@ saintandrews.org or 651.762.9148.

Radical Hospitality:

Proclaiming Christ’s Love In Action — Part 4 by Erin Morris, Diaconal Minister of Faith Engagement

I remember my first Sunday at St. Andrew’s over seven years ago. I had driven from Colorado with my two cats in the car just a few days earlier. I only knew one person, and he was busy running the worship service. I walked into this mammoth Sanctuary and down the long aisle towards the front, as I knew I was going to be introduced, but being the good Lutheran my body would not go to the front row. I saw a woman sitting by herself and she looked friendly, so I asked if I could sit with her. She said yes and introduced herself. Lee Menssen was the first person I met at St. Andrew’s. Little did I know that she had been a member here for years, helped to edit Pastor Straiton’s Bible studies, is a faithful Bible Study participant, as well as an amazing woman of faith. She was my first friend, and I smile every time I see her.

Practicing radical hospitality can be a gift for you and for others. You don’t know who you might meet when you extend your hand, how that person could shape your life or how you can shape theirs. Christ has called us into this community known as St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church. I believe that by the power of the Holy Spirit, each of us is here on purpose. And it is up to us to get to know each other, to open ourselves up and welcome all who come to worship. So take a chance, introduce yourself to someone new. Share coffee and a cookie with someone you don’t know. You might end up with a new best friend, mentor in faith or a new euchre partner.

A few weeks ago, at a Saturday night worship, I was talking to two women and asked how they knew each other. “I sat beside her at worship one night and she became my best friend these past five years.”

Small Group Ministry Looking for something to do with your small group? Perhaps you have a book club and would like to tackle something faith based. We have some great resources that might be perfect for you. Contact Erin Morris 651.762.9135 or [email protected] if you would like more information. Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White by Adam Hamilton. Adam Hamilton is a Methodist pastor in Kansas City. Through a collection of sermons and essays he challenges us as Christians to find the middle ground. In doing so, we are able to have a dialog with someone who may think differently than we do. There is a book that can be read as well as a DVD that helps inspire conversation. All the Places to Go; How Will You Know by John Ortberg. Rarely in the Bible does God command someone to “stay.” Instead, he opens a door and invites us to walk through it, into the unknown. And whether we stay or go will ultimately determine the kind of life we’ll live and the kind of person we’ll become. Learn how to open your eyes and see the countless doors that God has opened to you. This study has a DVD, book and participant guide so any group can utilize it. Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? by Phillip Yancey. What is prayer? How does it work? And more importantly, does it work? These are some of the questions you will explore as you and your group grow closer in your relationship with God. This resource has a DVD and a small group participant guide.

Empowered by God’s love, we help transform lives, communities and the world so that everyone may know Christ’s healing power. 12

Proclaim Jesus Christ, Live in Christ, Serve!

Serve! A spotlight on the many ways in which the people of St. Andrew’s are living in our mission to Proclaim Jesus Christ, Live in Christ, SERVE!

In the Serve Spotlight: Valet Ministry Did you know that it is an average of 230 feet from the front door of the Sanctuary to the first parking spot? The distance can be a hindrance for some people to get to worship. For some it is because of injury, being the one parent with a few children to get out of the car or your body is not cooperating and walking is a struggle. Around four years ago some people wanted to remove this obstacle for people to come to worship and started the Valet Ministry. Rollie Johnson, member since 1994, has been active in this ministry from the beginning. He feels that by serving others, making it a bit less challenging for them to make it to the worship service on time, is important. It is an act of hospitality that we can extend to others. “The work is not hard, but rewarding if you want to meet a lot of friendly folks.” Brenda Schuhwerck, who has been active at St. Andrew’s since 1989, says that, “It is easy to drive the cars away and park them. The people are very appreciative. Anyone can help as long as you pass the background check.” Rachel Mueller, who is a new member and has used the Valet Ministry, says, “I have been so thankful for St. Andrew’s Valet Service since joining the congregation a year ago. As a single mom with a toddler, my hands are always full walking into church on Sunday mornings. On one particularly chilly and snowy morning, a kind valet grabbed the car seat carrying my daughter and escorted me like a wedding usher through the slush and ice. After the worship service, he was waiting for me to escort us back to my car. I was overwhelmed by his generosity!” This is a wonderful ministry that allows people to enter worship with less anxiety. People are concerned with how they will be able to walk the 230 feet, if they get a close spot, if they will be late and if they will be able to find a seat in the back so they can easily get to the car. We appreciate all those who serve in this ministry. If this is something you would like to do, we are always open to new people joining the teams. Please contact Erin Morris, 651.762.9135 or [email protected] and she will connect you.

Empowered by God’s love, we help transform lives, communities and the world so that everyone may know Christ’s healing power. 13

Away to the window they flew like The Flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. We saw lions, and tigers and bears OH MY! Later we worked together out under the sky!

Yogadevotion Yogadevotion is a practice of breath, prayer and movement led by a trained yoga instructor. Yogadevotion helps to encourage healthy living and a peaceful presence. Whether you are just beginning to explore the benefits of yoga or an experienced yogi, you are welcomed to this community. We need 15 pre-registered for each class to be held. Register through an in-house registration form, attention Dianne Nash, call 651.762.9141, or register at saintandrews.org. Eight-week session Sept. 12-Oct. 31; cost $64 Practicing in the Presence – Mondays, 9-10 a.m.

Multi-level; open to all ages. Classes will be held in Sanctuary Room 204. Seated in the Presence – Mondays, 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Getting up and down off the floor can be difficult for many reasons. This Yogadevotion class incorporates poses that increase range of motion, improve balance and bring attention to the breath, all using a chair as yoga props. Classes will be held in Sanctuary Room 204. Practicing in the Presence/Yin Yoga – Mondays, 5:15-6:15 p.m.

Yin Meditation incorporates gentle movements and listening for the voice of God. Yin yoga is done on the floor, with props and with greater attention/space to breathing. While being one of the more meditative yoga practices, yin is also considered to be one of the more healing yoga practices as it works passively to open joints and release fascia…both which when inflamed restrict our movements and activities of daily living. Classes are held in the Great Hall. Practicing in the Presence – Mondays, 6:30-7:30 p.m. This multi-level class is open to all skill levels from beginner to advanced. Classes are held in the Great Hall.

One Love — One Heart A way Mission Jamaica distinguishes itself from many mission programs is the great number of mission volunteers that return year after year. A key reason for this loyalty is the friendship that we develop with our Jamaican brothers and sisters. MJ has worked with Delzie Murray for over a decade to find very needy families for the Ja’Bode homes that we build. She acts as our guide into the Jamaican countryside and is a witness to the power of God’s love to our neighbor. She has taught us many things about the Jamaican people and the communities around Montego Bay. This past year St. Andrew’s had the privilege to pay her service back with some much needed repairs to her home. On this page is the thank you letter she sent back with our group. She has indeed won our hearts!

Empowered by God’s love, we help transform lives, communities and the world so that everyone may know Christ’s healing power. 20

Vision Slovakia Golf Fundraiser – THANK YOU! With a beautiful day in the mid-70s, and following our opening welcome and prayer, 68 registered golfers were off to their respective tee boxes for the noon shotgun start. Indian Hills Golf Club has been our host for 14 years, providing marvelous hospitality and a wonderful meal. Following the evening meal, raffle tickets were drawn for the various prizes that had been contributed. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Lutheran Academy and High School of the Center for Christian Education in Martin, Slovakia. Our theme reflects the growth of the school in Martin, “It’s About the Students.” Our partnership with the children and youth of Martin expresses a commitment to support the next generation. The spiritual impact of the students on their families leaves no doubt that Christian education on all levels is the answer for a post-Communist church and society in Slovakia. A special thank you note to our corporate sponsor, Globe University and the Minnesota School of Business, tee and green sponsors, partner churches, raffle items and special gifts, all of which go to support our partnership with our friends and Empowered by God’s love, we help transform lives, communities and the world so that everyone may know Christ’s healing power. church in Martin, Slovakia. 24
