From the Desk of the Lead Pastor

May Christmas Be Closer Than You Think Christmas is my wife Tammy’s favorite time of year. She is one of the people in the world who is NOT upset when Christmas music starts in October. We put our tree up as early as we can without losing all the needles by Christmas Eve. We have it down to a science. Our house is filled with nativity sets and lights. The truth is, the entire family loves it, and we love to watch Tammy smile as it all comes together. St. Andrew’s is somewhat like that. We prepare far in advance to pick just the right songs, just the right biblical texts, and prepare for that powerful moment when we sing as all of God’s people Silent Night. St. Andrew’s does Christmas like no other place. But we do it for more than ritual and tradition. On Christmas Eve and all the days around it — from the Christmas Festival to the reenactment of a Day in Bethlehem — we have one hope for our community. We hope and plan and work so that our work points to the Savior of the world. Our Christmas and Advent season are not just for enjoyment but so we can all experience the loving power of a God who is with us — The Emmanuel, the Savior of the world. This holiday season I have a deep hope for you: I pray that you approach all we do at St. Andrew’s with a spiritual longing. Look for ways that God is made real to you. Let the age-old story come alive again and experience the birth of Jesus not only in the seasonal way but in a spiritual way. Let the baby be born in YOU again. Look for it and it will be closer than you think.

There is nothing “ordinary” about Dr. Glenn Pickering. How many electrical engineers, when they say they want to go back to school, are referring to seminary? And how many of those, once they become pastors, feel called to a specialized ministry and earn their PhD in psychology? And go on to become a leading Christian psychologist, providing transformational counseling services to thousands of individuals and couples? Without ever losing their childlike heart for God?

Men’s Tuesday Morning Bible Study With Pastor John Straiton, Tuesdays, 6:30-7:30 a.m., Great Hall

A large group of men meet year round every Tuesday. Come and make some new friends as you learn more about God’s word. The group is currently focusing on Paul’s Letter to the Romans. Coffee and rolls are provided. Registration is not necessary. No fee.

What truly sets Dr. Pickering apart is his ability to share his profound wisdom in ways that are simple, clear, and immediately applicable.

Faith Sharing

Join Dr. Glenn Pickering as he leads an interactive seminar about communication and relationships. Relationships happen in a variety of ways- family, co-workers, teammates, etc. Learning how to lovingly communicate our needs and desires, as well as clearly hearing others, are skills we need to practice.

Talking about your faith can be difficult, but it is a skill you can learn. Share what you know and feel about Jesus in a way that does not hurt or offend others and feels natural to who you are. Come for these three weeks where we will learn how to share our faith with our families, our co-workers and with strangers. Register online at saintandrews.org.

Radical Hospitality:

Proclaiming Christ’s Love In Action by Erin Morris, Diaconal Minister of Faith Engagement

This fall I was able to attend an education event at Church of the Resurrection in Kansas City, a Methodist church that has four campuses where 10,000 people worship on a weekend including their online community. In September they had 250 new members. Twenty-five years ago this church started meeting in a mortuary with nine people (thus the name Resurrection). When they got to 100 people they had a meeting to talk about a second service. One of the elders said they loved how the church was now, they knew everyone’s name and hoped the church would not get any bigger. The Pastor, Adam Hamilton, asked the question “Did God call us here to make a Christian Cheers where everyone knows your name, or did he call us here to make a church, inviting others to know Christ and deepening their relationship with him?” In that moment they made a decision to welcome ALL who came to the doors to experience Christ and to show radical hospitality. That is how they grew and continue to grow every day. Radical Hospitality is not just an expectation of the staff or those who are trained as Greeters and Ushers. It is the call of every person in their congregation. Radical Hospitality

is asking yourself, “What can I do today to help someone else experience Christ?” It is making yourself uncomfortable so that others are comfortable. It is not looking inward but looking outward. Radical Hospitality is going above and beyond, doing the unexpected and going the extra mile. Maybe you think you are being hospitable and are thinking this article applies to someone else. You do look outwards and are very friendly to those who come up to you. Ask yourself these questions: • With whom do you spend most of your time at church? • In a pew or a row of chairs, where do you sit? In the middle or on the ends? • Where do you park? • When changes happens in the service you attend, how do you feel? Think about your responses. Are they geared towards what makes you comfortable or what makes others comfortable? What can you do to welcome others in a radical way? Watch for the next issue of the Proclaim for ideas on how to start the New Year with steps to being radical.

TreeHouse TreeHouse Brings Hope to Hurting Youth The goal of TreeHouse is to bring living hope to hurting youth and families leading to life transformation. This is accomplished by Going Deeper nights, Support Group nights, one on one mentoring sessions, growth groups, trips and activities. The Mahtomedi area TreeHouse has been meeting in the Youth and Sports Center for the past three years. During that time hundreds of teens have walked through the door. Pastor Hogenson had a huge hand in helping bring TreeHouse to the Mahtomedi area. When he was given his diagnosis earlier this year, the teens wanted to write him letters to share with him how TreeHouse has affected them. We wanted to share some of the words with you. “At TreeHouse I’ve learned that God turns my darkness into light.” “Because of TreeHouse I know that I am lovable, capable and worthwhile. It’s making me a better person every day.” “The biggest change that TreeHouse has made in my life is saving it. I know for a fact that I would have taken my own life last year without TreeHouse.” “At TreeHouse I’ve learned that God is my path to a better life. Thank you for making this TreeHouse. It saved my life and I became a believer in Jesus because of it.”

“My favorite part of TreeHouse is the loving community that I’ve found here. It helps me to grow as a person. Thank you for giving me this place.” “Because of TreeHouse I know I am worth much more than I give myself credit for.” “Without TreeHouse I would feel helpless, but I’m never helpless because God is always there.” “The biggest change that TreeHouse has made in my life is making me feel accepted. Here I feel like I belong somewhere. I feel like I have a purpose.” “At TreeHouse I’ve learned that God loves me no matter what I’ve done in my past or continue to do.” If you would like to learn more about TreeHouse and how you may be able to help, contact Heidi Wermedal at [email protected] or 651-253-4663.

Vision Slovakia 115 New Students Celebrate the Opening of LA New Premises After weeks of moving, months of preparing, and years of praying, the Lutheran Academy and High School in Martin, Slovakia, has moved into their new home. A building once used to publish anti-Christian, communist propaganda, is now occupied with students hearing the Gospel message in 11 fully functioning classrooms. Parents and children volunteering to make the building ready is a rare sight in post-communist Slovakia, yet school families spent countless hours moving and cleaning. The following describes the celebration of these new premises. Operating Lutheran Academy in the current six buildings had been a complicated endeavor and in the long term, was unsustainable. What’s more, trying to continue in the current premises would not allow further growth. This is why the leadership at Lutheran Academy came to the decision to purchase the historic Neografia building and turn it into a school. The grand opening of the new premises took place on the first day of school, 2015. Reconstruction of the new building was formally launched in July of this year, and we have already discovered that building the three new classrooms has allowed us to double the size of the kindergarten, the grammar school, and the high school freshman class. In the near future, we will also be able to create new rooms for the entire second grade class. What is especially exciting is that, due to the acquisition of the new building, we are already able to educate 115 new students! The grand opening of the second floor of the new school building was carried out in the presence of parents, students and guests. Observers were able to see the renovated spaces (dining room, classes and bathrooms) and also to see just how much work still remains to be done. The newly renovated kindergarten building was also on display. The support and interest of the parents added to the excitement of this amazing and blessed meeting. “So far, the success of Lutheran Academy is proof that the investment in quality education based on Christian values is meeting a genuine need. This educational model is proving to be both sustainable and a long-term success,” says headmaster, Joseph Sopoliga. “We pray that our efforts will be joined by many people.” Won’t you join us? Invite your friends and inform them of opportunities to help our school in its growth, fulfilling its mission in the lives of students and their families. By God’s grace, we hope to build a permanent home for future generations of students. Please contact Paul Berge, Director of Vision Slovakia, to join in the support of this unfolding miracle in partnership with the school in Martin, Slovakia: 651-762-9143 or [email protected].

A group of high school students show their joy of being in their new classroom building.

Join the Builders’ Group Trip The Center for Christian Education in Martin, Slovakia, continues to “Make Miracles Happen” with the purchase of the two buildings adjacent to the Church and School campus. What a miracle this is to acquire these buildings for future classroom space. But there is a lot of work to be done to renovate this space into classrooms, a cafeteria, a gymnasium, computer and science labs and teacher offices. With this said, we are asking you to consider in joining up a 2016 Builders’ Group Trip: • Jan. 7-17, 2016, arriving Martin on January 8 and leaving from Vienna on Jan. 17. Dates are somewhat flexible but will be around this time. Trip leaders: Bob and KJ Bach. • April 15-23, 2016, arriving Martin April 16 and leaving Europe on April 23, 2016. Trip leaders: Joe and Joann Lunders. • April 15-30, 2016, arriving Martin on April 16 and leaving Europe on April 30, 2016. Extension trips yet to be determined. Trip leaders: Joe and Joann Lunders. The April trips give flexibility to team members who may not have two weeks available to be away. The work to be done will be tailored to each individual’s ability.

Please prayerfully consider these opportunities to serve our Lord with our hands and feet, and to share our gifts and talents. Recall our Builders Group motto – Renovating Rooms . . . Renovating Lives! We will never know what lives this school will change!

Empowered by God’s love, we help transform lives, communities and the world so that everyone may know Christ’s healing power. 24

Mission Jamaica 2016 Mission Jamaica is about serving God’s people, helping children, building houses, working in a medical clinic, and so much more. Sign up now! St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church trip options are available in January, February or March. Call/text or email Pattianne Demaray at 651-353-3095, [email protected]. Did you know this is our 27th season of service?

The first year, Mission Jamaica began with 19 missionaries from St. Andrew’s working one week at Hope Valley Experimental School in Kingston. In 2016, we are sending more than 445 missionaries from 40 different churches to work 12 one-week projects (plus three weeks of high school kids in the summer, numbers unknown). That is a lot of service to God’s people! Our congregation will be represented by 38 of these missionaries on 4 different trips. Mission Jamaica will be working at 14 sites. We will impact children and their families needing help at schools, children’s homes, J’Abode, various clinics, and neighborhoods within the Kingston and Montego Bay areas.

Just announced: Pastor Mike Carlson will lead the trip March 12-19. It is a family-friendly trip with an estimated cost of $2,100 per adult ($1,280 per child with two adults in room). Says Mike: “Let’s go transform and be transformed! Building homes, loving children, feeding hungry, praising God ... who’s in?” cement, paint, medications, as well as scholarships for missionaries. Every once in a while, we are blessed with a whole house, an autoclave and even funds to keep a basic school open for another year. God is so great! A 2016 project close to our hearts.

Since Habitat for Humanity left the island of Jamaica, a woman named Delzie Murray has worked to maintain the process of community living and sweat equity. After many years of selfless giving so that countless people have homes, we are blessed to give of ourselves to her. One of our 2016 projects will be making repairs to significant damage done to her home during an earthquake. It is truly a privilege and honor for us to give this gift to our Island partner and inspiration, Delzie.

We will be singing, playing, laughing (maybe crying) and praying with at least 1,500 children multiples times throughout the season. That could be enough, but not for us. While this is happening we will also remodel and/or make improvements at three children’s homes and two schools, build seven houses, hold eight clinics, and feed breakfast to 300 kids on their way to school. How do we do it?

Joyfully and prayerfully through the grace, love of God and the Great Commission from Jesus to go and do. Our thousands of missionaries over the past 26 years have not only donated their time and money but their thoughtful prayers with love. We have an incredibly high rate of repeat volunteers. Seventy-five percent of our St. Andrew’s team range from their 3rd to 27th year. All other repeater churches attending have some missionaries that have attended each year as well. We also have been blessed to have outside donors who are willing to help pay for school supplies, windows, walls,

Empowered by God’s love, we help transform lives, communities and the world so that everyone may know Christ’s healing power. 25
