REGISTER REVIEW The New Allocations this month cover a large cross section of types from airliners, through helicopters and amateur builts to balloons, with the most interesting being Hawker Siddeley Gnat XSO. The Gnat, although not built in large numbers, is one of the best known British jet fighters, probably because of its service with the Red Arrows aerobatic display team. Surprisingly, the Gnat was designed as long ago as 1951 by Folland Aircraft with the aircraft’s maiden flight taking place on July 18 1955. It was a single seat, light-weight jet fighter and the prototype was powered by a Bristol Siddeley Orpheus turbojet engine. Small numbers of Mk 1 Gnats were delivered to the RAF as well as the Indian, Finnish and Yugoslav Air Forces. Hindustani Aircraft of India also built the Gnat Mk II under licence and completed around 80 examples, the first two prototypes being converted from the last two British built Gnat Mk 1s. During August 1959 the prototype Gnat T Mk 1 flew and, although its primary role was as a two seat advanced trainer, it retained the capability to carry a wide range of external armament including 30mm cannon, bombs and underwing rockets. This meant that it could be pressed into service as a tactical fighter if the need arose. The Gnat was capable of Mach 0.98 in level flight and its sleek lines, speed and sound made it an ideal mount for the Red Arrows. XSO served with the RAF as XS101 before being used as a ground trainer and allocated the serial 8638M. It was sold during the early 1980s, restored to flying condition and appropriately registered G-GNAT on April 14 1982. It has now joined the growing number of jet fighters flying in Australia and thrilling the crowds at air shows around the country. Another type new to Australian skies is Great Lakes LKE. The Great Lakes was designed by American Charles Meyers during the early 1930s and was a two seat, open cockpit, biplane with a straight lower wing and a swept upper wing. Early models were powered by an 85hp Cirrus Mk 3 engine but later models had a 90hp unit fitted. Many aircraft were retro-fitted with 200hp Warner radial engines. Two hundred and sixty four Great Lakes were built between 1930 and 1932 when the depression struck and production ceased. Windward Aviation of Enid, Oklahoma revived to type in 1972 and began building the Model 2T-1A-1, fitted with a 150hp Lycoming engine and the Model 2T-1A-2 powered by a fuel injected 180hp Lycoming. The company also built a single example of the experimental Model X2T-1T fitted with an Allison 250 turboprop engine. Unfortunately this aircraft crashed, killing the chief test pilot of Great Lakes and no more were built. LKE was the fifth production Model 2T-1A-2 built with major components manufactured at Wichita, Kansas, and final assembly taking place at Enid, Oklahoma. Seven helicopter imports are listed including the usual gaggle of new Robinsons, two Beta IIs and a Raven II. Rotor-Lift’s Squirrel, RLR, has come from Japan where it was owned by Shikoku

Koku of Takamatsu, MD 520N Notar ZMM is from Turkey and Bell Longranger IHC has been imported from PNG. The Longranger is a 1981 model and was one of the last 206L-1 Longranger IIs to be built. When it was sold Bell were producing the Longranger III which had a 650shp Allison 250-C30P engine instead of the earlier 435shp C28B unit and IHC is believed to have returned to the factory to have the later engine fitted before coming to Australia in 1987. Imported by Helitech, the Bell agents, during October 1987 it was registered HIV but was quickly sold to Islands Helicopters in PNG where it became P2-IHC. Earlier this year Islands Helicopters decided to dispose of two of its Longrangers, P2-IHC and P2-IHE, and the Principal of CMF Investments flew to Port Moresby in May to inspect P2-IHC. A deal was struck and the Longranger was ferried from Port Moresby to Southport, Qld, via Kereema and Daru in PNG, then Horn Island, Cowen, Cooktown, Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Maryborough, Maroochydore and Southport. Meanwhile P2-IHE was shipped to Caloundra, Qld, for a complete overhaul and refurbishment and will no doubt appear on these pages in a future issue. While at Southport IHC received a thorough mechanical checkout by Coast Helicopters and a completely new interior including new radios and avionics before being delivered to its new home in Victoria. Robinson R22 Beta JZT is the only Aircraft Returning to the Register this issue, three weeks after being cancelled. The short time off the register was a result of delayed paperwork during a simple change of ownership. Thirty eight aircraft are shown in the Deletions listing although less than half of these are lost from the register forever. Fourteen machines have been re-registered and their new details can therefore be found in the New Allocation section, Zenair Zodiac CCY and Slepcev Storch ZLO have been transferred to the Australian Ultralight Federation register and Piper Aerostar YRD has been de-registered until an American export certificate is issued and the aircraft can be officially registered locally. Arthur Bailey’s three Cessnas, TWS, TWX and TXR have been temporarily de-registered whilst a minor paperwork error is corrected and Robinson R22 JZT is in a similar predicament. DH Heron CLX has been grounded for some time but only just taken off the register with the aircraft being stripped of all useful parts and the remains moved to the Moorabbin Air Museum. There are now only two Herons on the local register and, unfortunately, neither of these are still airworthy. NJI is now with Australia’s Museum of Flight at Nowra, NSW, whilst NJP was shipped to Saudi Arabia during September 2003. NJP was painted in full Saudia Airlines colours at Bankstown before departure and is now part of a collection to illustrate the different types operated by Saudia over the years. Of the exports, SAABs LIH and XDZ and Citation V Ultra XTT are now in the US with XDZ becoming N677PA with the Wells Fargo Bank at Salt Lake City, Utah, and XTT now flying as N525BA with Bell Aviation of West Columbia, South Carolina. and Boeing 737 TJB have gone to New Zealand where TJB has become ZK-JNC and is the tenth Qantas 737 flying in Jetconnect colours. Ansett Airbus A320 HYD has been in storage at Bordeaux, France, for some time still registered in Australia, so its cancellation may well indicate that it has now been sold. Dash 8 WZJ and Bell Longranger CKP have been exported to PNG with this being the third “tour of duty” in PNG for the Longranger. CKP has shown absolutely remarkable powers of recover as the helicopter was totally destroyed at Tartrus Station in Queensland when an oxygen bottle exploded in the cabin whilst on the ground attending the crash of an ultralight aircraft during May 1997. Photographs of the scene show only the tail boom of the helicopter recognizable, which raises serious questions about how much of an aircraft can be rebuilt whilst still retaining its original identity. A few antiques are listed in the Change of CoR Holder section this month including two rare Avro Cadets. David Morris has sold his Cadet AFX to Charlie Camilleri at Bathurst, NSW, whilst the RAAF Museum at Point Cook has obtained RUO from Graham Hosking. Jon Corbett has bought Geoff Glenn’s beautifully restored Tiger Moth BFD and Richard Davies of Coorow, WA, is the new owner of Tiger SSH. Michael Hart has obtained LUV, the only Blanton Wichawk amateur built aircraft in this part of the world, whilst Dave Montgomery has transferred his three Eagle Xs, FPO, FPY and JBA to his flying school, Eagle Air. The three Eagles are painted in a striking multi coloured scheme depicting a large eagle along the full length of the fuselage. Addition details are now known about some recently exported machines. Gippsland GA-200 BMJ, which was shown as being sold in New Zealand in last months issue, in fact has gone to Canada where it flies as C-FDDO. The GA-200 spent ten years with Moores Air Spray of Innisfail, Qld, before being exported. National Jet Systems BAe 146s NJQ and NJU are now known to have become LZ-HBA and LZ-HBB respectively with Hemus Air in Bulgaria, and Hughes 369D AKT is now flying in Sweden as SE-JGF. The Hughes was operated by Chopperline of Caloundra, Qld, between August 2002 and October 2004 and is now owned by Helimatic of Linkoping, Sweden. Also in Sweden are two Regional Express SAABs, EKG and EKN, which have taken up temporary markings, SE-C67 and SE-C72, for testing prior to joining the Swedish Air Force. The two SAABs had been flying in Australia since 1995, originally with Kendall Airlines and later with REX. Careflight Bell 412HP CFT, which was exported to India during March, is now marked as VT-HGG and operates for United Helicopters, based at Juhu. Kawasaki Bell 47G KSU, which was shown in the May listing as being exported to New Zealand, has finally joined the Kiwi register as ZK-HPG and is owned by Port Gore Homestead with a Wellington address. Going further back in time, SOCATA TB-9 Tampico JTC, which was reported as being exported to Canada during 2002, in fact went to America where it was registered N5341M. Going the other way is TB-20 Trinidad EEY, which was exported to the USA in 2001 as N1918Q, has now been sold to a Canadian owner. Also in Canada is

the wreck of Twin Otter P2-ALU, noted at Thunder Bay, Ontario, recently still in Airlink - PNG colours. The aircraft was stored, engineless, at Maroochydore, Qld, from October 1998 to September 2000 when it was moved by road to Toowoomba, Qld. It was registered HEA but it was never intended to be flown but to be used as a source of spare parts for Eastland Air’s fleet of Twin Otters. Since Eastland Air have ceased operations, the stripped fuselage and wings have been moved to the Bearskin Airlines hangar at Thunder Bay (to be used as spares ?) - which is odd, because Bearskin Airlines do not have any Twin Otters in their fleet. Although the remains are now in Canada and the aircraft has never flown as HEA, it is still officially registered as such. Qantas Boeing 767 EAM was recently retired and ferried to the Mojave Dessert for storage. Blue Star Aviation of Kansas City have advertised the aircraft for sale, along with several other Qantas 767s, and it seems that they have been successful in selling EAM. The aircraft was registered N771WD but was recently reported in Eritean Airlines colour scheme and marked as E3-AAO. In Europe two Australian Airbus’ are on the move with both now operating in Turkey. Ansett A320 HYX, which was sold in Sweden during May 2002, then moved to Malta for a short time, is now flying as TC-FBF with Freebird Airlines of Istanbul. Meanwhile TAA/Australian/Qantas A300 TAB, which went to Japan during 1987, is also based at Istanbul with Fly Air and is marked as TC-FLK. Also in Europe is BAe 125 NMR which was used by the ill fated National Safety Council of Australia between December 1988 and June 1989. The 125 “Pocket Rocket” was exported to the US but is now flying in the UK as G-JJSI with Gama Aviation of Farnborough. A couple of helicopters on the move. Bell 412 EEH, which was used by Esso to service their Bass Strait oil rigs between 1986 and 1994 is now resident in Iran with Helicopter Services Organization of Teheran. The big Bell was exported to Sweden in 1994 but did not stay long, quickly moving on to Qatar as A7-HAV and now Iran as EP-HUD. Helicopter Services Organization have been on a spending spree recently, obtaining two Bell 212s, two Bell 412, a Sikorsky S76A and an Eurocopter AS350B3 to add to its large fleet of over thirty helicopters. The company must have the worlds largest fleet of Sud Alouettes with 19 operational. Helicopter Resources Bell 206B Jet Ranger WNA has recently turned up in Malaysia where it is owned by Layang Layang Aerospace of Miri and flies as 9M-LLH. Also in Malaysia are Twin Otter AHI and Cessna 152 NAJ. The Twin Otter flew in Australia between May 1997 and November 2000 before going to Malaysia as 9M-SSN. It has now been sold to Kenari Air and has changed markings to 9M-KAT. Cessna 152 NAJ, which spent all its life in Australia with Victorian owners, was sold to the Elite Flying Club in Malaysia as long ago as August 2002. Its Malaysian registration has remained a mystery until recently when it was noted as 9M-ANA at Johor Bahru. The 2004 issue of the Australian Aviation Civil Aircraft Register is now available. This is the only publication that lists the CASA register in an easy to read tabulated format and includes

registration, type, construction number and C of R Holders's name and address. As with previous years we have included aircraft registered with the Gliding Federation of Australia, the Hang Gliding Federation of Australia and the Australian Ultralight Federation.
