ITALIAN DOLCE VITA – IN A TRULY UNIQUE LOCATION A place of aspiration: Venice, “La Serenissima”, casts a spell over people like hardly any other city in Europe. There is a countless number of myths and stories, a century-old history – and the lagoon city was the secret star of various books and movies. Right on the doorstep of Venice, on the private island San Clemente, there is the San Clemente Palace Kempinski. Lush gardens, antique court yards, a historic church built in the 12 th century – set in a former monastery, this place takes guests on a journey in time, while Piazza San Marco is just ten minutes away by boat. Crossing the historic waters of Venice, this boat ride is already an exceptional experience, which gets visitors in the mood for an outstanding stay. Thus, guests may discover Venice – but they do not have to. There are 190 rooms and suites providing privacy and relaxation – surrounded by a lavish park or with views of the impressive skyline of Venice, the lagoon or the Lido. Classic decor, warm colours, the traditional high ceilings and the unequally spacious aisles, meet typical Venetian elements always recalling historic times. Three restaurants and three bars serve the culinary delights – always following the traditions of the world-famous Italian cuisine. The restaurant Insieme is dedicated to providing a perfect start to the day and a diverse breakfast offer. THE HOST – BENEDIKT G. JASCHKE From Rome via Berlin to Venice: Benedikt Jaschke is General Manager at San Clemente Palace Kempinski and therefore in charge of the opening and management of the new Kempinski property. His purpose: to unlock the potential of the resort and, together with his team, to revitalize the island making it one of the places to be, not only for the in-house guests, but also for the Venetians. For the Munich native, it is a return to Italy: recently having worked at Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin as Hotel Manager and deputy to Managing Director Emile Bootsma, he already held positions at Hotel Hassler in Rome and Hotel Il Principe di Savoia, which is part of the Dorchester Collection, in Milan. The 40 year old already has an impressive career within the hospitality business, as proof of not only his international experience, but also his professional knowledge and organisational talent. Before moving to Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin at the beginning of 2015, he worked as Resident Manager at Hotel Hassler in the very heart of Rome and the associated Il Palazzetto for almost four years. Benedikt Jaschke started his professional career with an apprenticeship as a hotel specialist in 1994 at Hotel “Alter Wirt” in Munich. Afterwards, he moved to Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski and focused on Food & Beverage – first as Demi Chef de Rang, and later as Executive Steward. In 2000, he went abroad for the first time and spent a year at Frenchman’s Creek Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, followed by stations at Kempinski Hotel Ajman in the United Arabian Emirates, and the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains, St. Moritz, where he formed part of the opening team as a purchaser and Assistant F&B Manager. In 2004, he moved to Milan and started working at Hotel Il Principe di Savoia. During the following two years, he was in charge of the reconstruction and reorganisation of the restaurants and banqueting area. He returned to Germany in 2006. He then managed the luxury hotel Schlosshotel Lerbach in Bergisch Gladbach for five years – first as Resident Manager, and later as General Manager. He was also in charge of the gourmet restaurant Lerbach, led by Dieter Müller and awarded with three Michelin stars during that time. In addition to his mother tongue German, he is fluent in English and Italian. Benedikt Jaschke is married and the father of three children.

TYPICALLY ITALIAN – IN A CULINARY VARIERTY The largest “dining room” in Venice and the most romantic table of the city – on one island. The spacious parks of San Clemente not only offer an outstanding setting, but also a lot of space for culinary delights. Equipped with a picnic basket, guests can stroll around the island and find their personal favourite place. While having antipasti and sparkling champagne, guests are surrounded by cypresses, lime trees and blooming hydrangea, where they can experience relaxation and indulgence. Moreover, there is a strong romantic feeling, too: a dinner for two on one of the hills of San Clemente is a very special experience. Accompanied by candlelight, discreet service and the finest Italian specialities, the dinner not only provides guests with a view of the city, but also an atmospheric sun set. Whether it is birthdays, an anniversary or just a surprise for that special someone – this togetherness could not be found anywhere else in Venice. At the gourmet restaurant Acquerello, the sights are equally impressive: the terrace is set right next to the private pier of the island – with a beautiful view of the famous Piazza San Marco. It is the best place on San Clemente to savour the Italian creations of the kitchen team or to rediscover Mediterranean specialities. Restaurant Insieme stands for a perfect breakfast. ONE ISLAND – ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES A unique combination of conference rooms, outdoor areas and closeness to lively Venice makes San Clemente a versatile place for meetings, product presentations, incentive trips and team buildings. While the perfect destination for a day trip with its cultural and sightseeing attractions is just a short boat ride away, the island itself provides the calmness and privacy for creative ideas and new food for thought. All in all there are six conference rooms ranging in size from 32 to 318 square metres, which are suitable for groups of up to 450 persons and a wide range of purposes – whether it is board meetings, breakout sessions, workshops or bigger conferences. They are located in a separate building, the conference centre; enabling either a focused atmosphere for successful meetings or a laid-back mood for parties. The six rooms are not only called after the six Venetian districts; but also have typical elements, such as Murano lights and Venetian paintings, giving the conference area a certain Italian flair without limiting its functionality. As an addition, the gardens of San Clemente provide the space and flexibility for a wide range of activities: whether it is catching a breath outside, a crash course on the pitch and putt golf course, a baking course at Venice’s only wooden pizza oven, a sportive competition on the tennis courts, or an open-air coffee break with a special motto.

HISTORY – FROM THE 12TH CENTURY UNTIL TODAY The church alone is worth a visit – it is not only known as one of the must-see chapels in Venice but also as a symbol of the long history of the lagoon city and the island of San Clemente. Settled in 1131 for the first time, San Clemente initially provided a hospice and a small church. Originally, it was built in a Romanesque style and consisted of only a single cross-shaped nave. Pietro Gattilesso, “the Robber”, funded the buildings, perhaps to atone for his sins. The name, however, is dedicated to Pope Clement I., who died as a martyr according to legend and who is patron to the seamen. It was soldiers and pilgrims, who were supposed to set forth on the journey to the Holy Land that first came to San Clemente. Until 1432, the Augustinian monks lived and worked on the island, before the church took the decision to invest in the expansion of San Clemente. The chapel and the monastery were enlarged – in the late 15th century a larger building was constructed around the original nave, which has been retained until today. This “church in a church” is still a main feature of the construction. The Venetian society also provided financial support: the Morosini, one of the most influential families during that time, sponsored the restauration of the church façade in 1452. They entrusted Andrea Cominelli, who perpetuated the family’s coat of arms above the entrance. Moreover, he equipped the church with statues of St. Benedikt and St. Romuald. From 1522, San Clemente was dedicated to the wellbeing of body and soul and served as shelter for the noble guests of the Venetian republic and for the wealthy Venetians. Already back then, the island was characterized by its space and calmness while being set in immediate proximity to Venice. From 1642 to 1810 Venice was run by the Camadolesi monks, who consecrated themselves to the reconstruction of the church and monastery and who were also supported generously by the Venetian nobility. Later, the religious orders were abolished by Napoleon and the island was used for military purposes. From 1844, there was a hospital on San Clemente, which was enlarged several times. Most of the buildings now housing San Clemente Palace Kempinski were constructed in the early 20th century. Since 2003, the island has been used as a hotel site; however, the historic elements are still present. Amongst the restored treasures of the chapel, there are paintings and frescos of various Italian artists such as Giovanni Segala, Pietro Ricci, Francesco Ruschi and many more famous representatives of the Venetian school. In the past years, the buildings on San Clemente, and especially the church, were renovated, but always in keeping with the island’s history. There are some more buildings and sculptures of San Clemente displayed at Museo Diocesano die Venezia.
