After a play is ready to go on stage, it still needs one very important group of people:

THE AUDIENCE

That is where you come in! As an audience member, you have a very important role in the performance. You are the reason the actors are performing. If you are quiet and attentive, the actors will be free to perform without distraction. If you are a veteran of the theatre, the following information is just a refresher course. If you are a rookie, this will help you prepare for the show. Here are a few things to remember: i Enter the theatre quickly and quietly. i If you need to make a trip to the bathroom, please do this before the start of the performance. i Food, drinks and/or gum are not allowed in the theatre. iP erformances cannot be recorded, photographed or videotaped. It is best if you don't bring such equipment with you to the show. iS tudents who must leave the theatre due to illness or disruptive behavior should be escorted by an adult. iL et the performers know that you appreciate their work with applause… Lots of it! iL aughing at funny parts or singing if the actors ask you to is terrific, but please refrain from loud talking, whispering or other distracting behavior. Enjoy The Show! 2

ABOUT THE SHOW

T WHAT IS A MUSICAL?

A musical is a type of theatre that combines music, songs, spoken dialogue and dance. Musicals are performed around the world in many languages. They may be presented in large venues, such as big-budget Broadway and West End theatre productions, on tour, or by amateur groups in schools, theatres and other performance spaces. In addition to the U.S. and Britain, there are vibrant musical theatre scenes in Germany, Austria, France, Canada, Japan, Eastern Europe, Australia and other places.

T WHO WRITES A PLAY?

The book writer is the one who writes the spoken dialogue in a play. Many times a story such as SLEEPING BEAUTY is taken from a book that has already been written.

T WHAT IS AN ADAPTATION?

An adaptation is when a book or song is re-told from another persons point of view.

TH AVE YOU EVER READ “SLEEPING BEAUTY” OR “SLEEPING BEAUTY IN THE WOOD”? T HAVE YOU SEEN THE MOVIE? T HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ANY OTHER CHILDREN’S BOOK THAT HAS BEEN TRANSFORMED INTO A THEATRE PRODUCTION? TW HAT DIFFERENCE CAN YOU SPOT BETWEEN PREMIER ARTS PRODUCTION AND THE STORY? 3
