POSTGRADUATE STUDY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF EXETER Professor Sir Steve Smith, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Postgraduate education matters now more than ever. The contribution of postgraduates to the global economy cannot be overstated; they form the high-level skills base and knowledge economy that we need to invest in if we are to safeguard our financial, scientific, and intellectual futures. The contribution to the individual is even more profound. As well as the economic benefits – people with a postgraduate qualification can expect to earn £5,000 more a year on average (or £200,000 over a 40-year working life*) than someone only holding a Bachelor’s degree – a postgraduate degree can open a world of other opportunities. joy of learning, discovering, and understanding a subject you feel passionate about to the very deepest level, you will find that a postgraduate qualification will be one of the most rewarding things you ever do. I come from a working class background, and was told that ‘people like you don’t go to university.’ But I was lucky enough to have a teacher who gave me the confidence to succeed, and I was the first person in my family to go to university. That experience, for me, has fired a life-long focus on access to education. University is about achieving potential, not simply a reward for where you were born in life. We need to invest, both intellectually and financially, in the people who are generating new knowledge and teaching future generations, and the key way to do that is through postgraduate education.

WHAT IS POSTGRADUATE STUDY? Postgraduate study is a level above undergraduate study, and consequently places serious academic demands on you as a student. The majority of taught postgraduate programmes at Exeter are Masters degrees. These normally combine advanced level tuition with the
completion of a dissertation under the guidance of an individual member of staff. You will usually have a choice of modules so that you can tailor your programme to your own interests. Many of our taught degrees follow a flexible modular format whereby you can choose from a range of specialist pathways or combine modules from a range of areas.

PgCert and PgDip
We offer the Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc) and the Master of Research (MRes). The MRes degree, highly valued by employers, combines advanced subject-specific tuition with advanced level training in the methodological, analytic and research skills which are vital for the undertaking of further research. Also on offer are other specialist taught postgraduate degrees, such as the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and the Master of Laws (LLM).
Some of our Masters degrees can be taken in a shorter form, by omitting the dissertation or some of the taught modules. Whereas a Masters programme represents 180 credits of which around 60-90 will be for the dissertation element, Postgraduate Diplomas (120 credits) and Postgraduate Certificates (60 credits) covering only taught modules are also available in a number of subject areas.
Several of our subjects also offer the opportunity to study a Masters by Research, giving you the opportunity to gain a Masters degree by carrying out an independent research project in a specific subject under the supervision of an academic expert, rather than via scheduled tuition. Masters by Research programmes are usually approximately 30 per cent cheaper than taught Masters degrees, but sometimes have more stringent entry criteria. Part-time study and distance learning Most Masters programmes are 11-12 months full-time, with many programmes also available for parttime study and lasting roughly twice as long. Please note that international students are subject to visa regulations which normally prevent part-time study. Increasingly we offer distance-learning programmes which require little or no attendance at our campuses and enable you to study for a postgraduate qualification from Exeter, anywhere in the world. Some programmes are delivered via ‘block teaching’; intensive one to two week bursts of on-campus lectures, seminars, and activities, which can fit more easily around your working life.
Contact hours Contact hours vary widely between programmes: science courses can involve an almost 9-5 schedule of lectures, talks, meetings, and lab sessions; whilst humanities degrees may feature only a few hours of timetabled classes a week, but will require you to undertake a substantial amount of reading and research outside of official teaching hours. If you are studying full-time, expect to be working approximately 40 hours per week towards your degree. Postgraduate study is much more about collaboration between academics and students than undergraduate study. It’s important to take advantage of this relationship by asking questions and seeking advice in order to excel at your chosen programme.
Research degrees/ Doctoral College This prospectus deals primarily with postgraduate taught programmes. We also offer a full range of postgraduate research degrees supported by the University of Exeter Doctoral College. In addition to Masters by Research, you can also study for Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, as well as a number of professional doctorates (some of which are detailed in this prospectus). The life of an MA student is busy. When I applied I was aware there would be a step up, but the levels of commitment demanded from you are pretty large. Not so large that they’re unmanageable, but you do have to dedicate a lot of your life to organisation and reading. That said, this has undoubtedly been the best six months of my life. Athena SWAN The University is a member of the Athena SWAN Charter which was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in higher education and research. In May 2015 the Charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL), and in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students. The Charter now recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women. We are constantly seeking new ways to engage with government, industry, and the community in order to build productive, sustainable partnerships and tackle some of the fundamental issues facing humankind. Our research income has more than doubled in the five years to 2013. F ollowing the REF HEFCE has awarded us an additional £3.8 million for research, the third highest gain amongst English universities. We are ranked 16th nationally taking account of the proportion of staff submitted.* 9 8 per cent of the University of Exeter’s research is of international quality. This is a significant increase since RAE 2008 when 82 per cent of our research was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. O ur world-leading (4*) research has increased from 17 per cent to 29 per cent compared to the RAE in 2008. O ur market share of world-leading or internationally excellent research has increased by 22 per cent. We have nine Units of Assessment in the top 10 nationally for worldleading or internationally excellent research with three in the top five: Theology (2nd), Area Studies, Archaeology (3rd), Politics (5th), Sociology, Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences, Public Health, Biological Sciences. We rank 16th nationally for worldleading (4*) publications and 11th in the Russell Group.

We are particularly committed to encouraging new ideas and nurturing talent, and as such we boast an extremely high number of early career researchers at Exeter. 30 per cent of our academic staff are early career researchers, a much greater proportion than most other universities. FINANCE AND FUNDING Money is the single biggest barrier preventing people studying for a postgraduate degree. Securing funding for your Masters is vital to realising your ambitions. The funding landscape for postgraduate education is changing rapidly, and navigating through it can be difficult. When planning how to fund your postgraduate degree, make sure you start early and think outside of the box; the earlier you start planning the longer you have to research opportunities, or just accumulate savings. Remember to sell yourself in applications for funding too; other people will likely be applying for the same money. How much will it cost? Your tuition fee is only one part of the cost of doing a postgraduate degree: you will also need to account for living costs and accommodation.
Tuition fees
Tuition fees vary from programme to programme, and are detailed in each of the subject entries at the back of this prospectus (see the inside back cover for the programme index). For Home/EU students, most fall between £7,000 and £12,000.
Accommodation and living costs
The National Union of Students estimates living costs outside of London to be approximately £12,000 per year, including accommodation. This figure is given as a guide only; depending on your priorities and how you budget it could vary significantly in either direction. Outline accommodation costs are detailed on p26.
Scholarships Scholarships are one of the best ways to help pay for your postgraduate degree. We offer numerous scholarships to encourage exceptional students to apply for Masters programmes. They are often specific to individual programmes and/or students from individual countries or regions. Scholarships tend to be highly competitive and merit-based, so we recommend investigating options early as deadlines and eligibility vary. Many schemes will not cover full costs, but may go some way to reducing the costs. You cannot normally hold more than one scholarship awarded by the University, but you can usually apply for as many external schemes as you like.
Alternative funding Beyond scholarships there are as many ways to pay for your postgraduate studies as there are people undertaking postgraduate study; wages, bursaries, savings, inheritance, and, increasingly, alternative methods such as crowdfunding and philanthropy, are all valid and useful alternative ways of funding your degree. In my city centre library I looked at the Grants Register, which lists various grants available to local students studying at postgraduate level. My scholarship in particular was aimed at those who had lived in the area where I grew up and had attended college or sixth form within the borough. The application form asked what course I was hoping to study and why I thought it would be beneficial to me and the wider society in the future. Postgraduate loan scheme A new system of postgraduate loans for Masters programmes is being developed for students at English universities. Initially announced as part of the Chancellor’s 2014 Autumn Statement, these governmentbacked student loans could revolutionise postgraduate funding in the UK. At the time this prospectus went to print the proposal was still under consultation, so no details were finalised. Loans are proposed to be introduced from 2016 and provide up to £10,000 a year for taught Masters courses in all subject areas. Science We boast state-of-the-art laboratories for science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine across all our campuses, including the Environment and Sustainability Institute at our Penryn Campus. At our Streatham Campus we are currently developing the Living Systems Institute (LSI); a £52.5 million interdisciplinary research centre bringing together leading mathematicians, physicists, cell and molecular biologists, biomedical scientists and engineers. Together they will apply investigative techniques from engineering and physics to make biology a predictive as well as an observational science, pioneering an exciting new approach to understanding how diseases evolve and how they can be diagnosed and cured more

LIVING IN CORNWALL Living in Cornwall Our Penryn and Truro campuses are in what many consider to be the UK’s most beautiful county. The Penryn Campus is just a few minutes’ walk from Penryn, home to a rapidly expanding collection of independent cafés, shops, galleries and restaurants, and a railway station with services to Falmouth and the city of Truro (10 and 20 minutes, respectively). Falmouth is a vibrant student town with a wealth of bars, pubs and restaurants and a lively café culture; its seven beaches, beautiful rivers and world-famous marina attract national and international visitors. Truro is the most southerly city in England and close to some of the best beaches in the country. The Cathedral’s impressive gothic towers dominate the city skyline, with an exciting array of shops, restaurants and leisure facilities in the surrounding streets.
Penryn Campus The Penryn Campus is set in 100 acres of countryside, close to the waterside town of Falmouth, and boasts beautiful views over the Fal estuary. Archaeology at Exeter is currently involved in many exciting projects in Britain and around the world. In addition to academic classes for Masters students, there will be many opportunities for both Masters and Research students to become personally involved with the research being conducted in the department. We currently have active fieldwork and research projects in Britain, Europe, South America, North America, Central Asia and South Asia. Students have participated in all of these projects. In addition to lectures we have regular visiting speakers who present their research. We encourage all our students to get involved and take an active role in our academic community. Archaeology, as a discipline, will be able to offer you a wide range of personal, academic and practical skills. This suite of abilities should stand you in good stead for whatever future programme or career you decide to take. I wanted a fast-paced, independent, learner-directed style of learning, along with seminar and tutorial-based instruction, and that is what I have received. These structures need to withstand not only normal and extreme operational loads due to weather conditions, vehicles and pedestrians, but also accidental or deliberate man-made hazards. The courses will integrate the strengths of our structures and dynamics group who have internationally leading expertise in structural health monitoring, structural dynamics and control with expertise in related themes of infrastructure management, systems and infomatics. E cological Public Health Research Methods for Practice MSc Advanced Professional and Clinical Practice The programme is designed to enable students to adapt and develop new skills and roles throughout their professional lives, including clinicians preparing for independent specialist roles and other healthcare practitioners looking to progress into advanced practice roles. This unique MA combines philosophical and sociological perspectives on science and technology. You can examine the concept of science, the knowledge it provides and the way in which the production of knowledge is organised in society. The programme is excellent preparation for further research or employment in the management and evaluation of science and its impact on society – an increasingly important aspect of science policy.
Acquire a broad-based knowledge of social science research methods, as well as core research training within a contemporary sociology context. Provides the theoretical knowledge and practical experience to understand the unique physiological responses of children and adolescents during exercise, and how physical activity and fitness can enhance the health and wellbeing of young people. Research is at the heart of the department of Theology and Religion, which boasts a diverse and vibrant group of students from many parts of the world. Our current research interests and expertise encompass biblical studies, Jewish studies – from early rabbinic literature to the Holocaust and the State of Israel – early Christian history, modern theology, practical and ecumenical theology, ethics, philosophy of religion, and the interface between science and religion; and much more. MA Theology This is an imaginative and exciting programme designed to reflect the emphases and range of our research culture. All of the available modules offer a great breadth of learning, allowing for plenty of flexibility and room to specialise in the areas that interest you most. To further develop interdisciplinary approaches students may also take a module from another Humanities postgraduate programme or may choose to build up the foundations of their learning with a module from the third year undergraduate Theology and Religion course. Throughout your studies you will benefit from access to the department’s extensive resources and enjoy a close working relationship with our exceptional academic staff. The Theology department has an extremely supportive group of staff and an exciting range of research specialisms. There are also postgraduate research seminars available to widen interest. The staff have a great mix of faith backgrounds which is refreshing and very helpful in terms of an open study environment.
