A Whisper in the Wind by Muriel Morgan Pfeifer 1934-2014 used by permission WEST DENMARK west of present-day Luck and still around in small parts, i.e. the local Lutheran church maintains some of the town’s original flavor and history. In 1895, the U.S. Atlas listed West Denmark as having 20 people, a Post Office and a school. Today there are about the same numbers of people but, no Post Office and no operating school. At its peak, the town of West Denmark had a creamery, Post Office, high school, Lutheran seminary, general store, church, baseball field, middle school and elementary school, several homes and a few small farms. Some people believe the creamery, on the Northwest shore of Little Butternut Lake, was, indeed, the first cooperative creamery in Wisconsin - others believe it was the first in the entire United States. West Denmark most likely did have the first Danish Seminary in this country, for a few short years in the late1800s. Controversy between various factions within the Danish Synod led to an early closure of the seminary in 1892. Pride of place remains in the hearts of descendants and friends alike. The West Denmark Lutheran Church’s Aebleskiver dinner in May - a case in point.

How Many Backup Copies of Important Files Do You Need? (Eastman’s 2016) Here’s the old data center 3-2-1 rule-ofthumb for backing up: 3 copies of anything you care about – Two isn’t enough if it’s important. 2 different formats – Example: Dropbox plus DVDs or Hard Drive plus Memory Stick or CD plus Crash Plan, or more 1 off-site backup – If the house burns down, how will you get your memories back?

Best get well wishes to PCGS member Joyce Bergstrand who is dealing with back surgery and physical therapy. Miss seeing you and extend our healing thoughts your way. Minutes for October 2016 PCGS meeting Attending Russ/Dottie Adams, Helen Stoltz-Wood, Margo/Russ Hanson, Reg Ronningen, Rob/Rachel Starbuck, Marge Hallquist. At 10 am three of the PCGS members met at the Milltown Museum for a tour, however the museum folks thought it was at noon, and so we missed the tour and will try again next summer. The group went around the table telling about their genealogy efforts with each having something to share on their current efforts. The program, by Russ/Margo Hanson, reviewed what DNA testing can show you and a little about how it works and a demo of the ancestry.com DNA programs. The Business meeting was brief. After a discussion and a vote, it was decided to have completed the 2016 museum touring season and will resume next summer -2017 with Osceola’s Olson House, Clayton’s Historical Documents safely stored at the Clayton Village Hall, Amery Historical Society at the Amery Public Library, the Milltown History Center and possibly, the Lamar History Center, on the list. The November program will be a round-table discussion “Beginning mistakes (we all make) that I will NEVER make again” or share an interesting trip or adventure or find in your genealogy research efforts. The 2016 Holiday Event will be the second Monday of December (12th) at the Ravenholt Research Center, Luck Historical Society Museum at noon. Potluck/Finger Food - whichever works for you. Speakers/programs are being sought- all suggestions welcome Russ Hanson/Secretary/ River Road Ramblings now appearing at riverroadrambler.blogspot.com Polk County, Wisconsin Genealogy Society

WRITTEN PRIMARY SOURCES By Leah Grandy Future historians are facing a crisis in a skill set that has not been a significant issue in the past. As the teaching of cursive writing has been eliminated or greatly diminished from North American elementary school curriculums, we are seeing the arrival of university students to arts programs unable to read written primary documents. Current undergrad students (yes, they are here now!) posses little of the experience with cursive writing needed for interpreting many historical manuscripts; they also are facing struggles in the classroom reading professor's notes and completing written exams in a timely fashion. Saturday 3 December Family History Projects Denmark – FamilySearch.org has put online the name index for the 1911 Danish census. This collection consists of some 2.8 million records and approximately 450,000 images. The 1911 census was the 13th census conducted in Denmark (the first one dates back to 1787). Please note that three different forms were used in this census: one for the capital of Copenhagen, one for other cities and one for rural areas. The information you get from this census will depend on where your ancestor lived. This collection can be searched by first name and last name. Access is free. [Denmark 1911 Census]
