Early New England Research If you are researching New England ancestors there are many resources available. Glenn Kinkaid the CCGS speaker for October will provide some great information about using town records. The New England Historic Genealogical Society has a great website with details on conducting 17th Century New England research. They have finding aids, maps, list of organizations, periodicals and much more. You can view the guide at the following link: http://www.americanancestors.org/education/learning-resources/read/17thc-new-england-guide In addition you can search the databases for your ancestors. You can search by last name. I searched on my Willock surname and I was astonished at the total number found since I didn’t think they were ever in New England. The total results came back to 2507802. I found the surname Willock listed from four different New England states. This could be a huge break through for me and even help on my dna matches. Many of our ancestors traveled from the New England Colonies down to Virginia, North Carolina and even Georgia. On the left side of the screen it will give you a break down of the record type and the number of results as well. You must be a member to log in and view the results. http://www.americanancestors.org/search/advanced-search

Adoptions & Orphan Train If you are conducting Adoptee or Orphan Train Rider research looking for living biological relatives Richard Hill has written an article that will be beneficial to you. The article is entitled DNA Testing: Seven Guidelines for Adoptees. The article describes the most common tests that will assist anyone conducting research on adoptees. Some of his advice includes not wasting money on sibling and kinship that tests because they only check some of the dna markers you will need in researching your connections. You can read the whole article at the following link http://www.dna-testing-adviser.com/.../seven-guidelines-for-adoptees.pdf Have you tried out the new MyGroups feature? You may access MyGroups by logging into your assigned personal page kit number. If you click on the MyGroups link it will take you to another page where you can post messages or photos related to your ancestors to help you in your research. You can post queries related to your ancestors. The CCGS DNA MyGroups is set to private display and is only viewable by our project members. https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/collin-county-genealogical-society/about To order new tests at CCGS DNA project go to this link: https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Collin_CoGS&code=Q47092 Some family trees have beautiful leaves, and some have just a bunch of nuts. Remember, it is the nuts that make the tree worth shaking.
