General Particulars Pile community water and sanitation project Leipzig Mission Weekly Status Report 9-20th November 2015 Sinedou Alex Luguna

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Pile water supply and sanitation project is funded by the Leipzig Mission through the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea (ELC PNG) who had engaged the Adventist Development Relief and Agency Papua New Guinea (ADRA PNG) as a development partner in implementing the project. The project commenced on the 9th November 2015 after the first trench payment of K108,000.00 by Leipzig Mission through ELC PNG. Due to short time frame for the project implementation, prior arrangements were done with the donor and stakeholders in regard to the start-up of the project. Initially the funding was to be transferred from German to ADRA PNG however alterations were done where Leipzig Mission had approved the arrangement for ELC PNG to pay the first instalment of the of K108,000.00 and the refund would done by Leipzig Mission to ELC PNG. Supplier Agreements were done with Hardware suppliers where project materials and supplies were taken on credit and payments were done a week later.

The project has progressed well since the start up during the dry season however. One factor that may pose a challenge in the implementation is the weather. Currently it’s been raining within the week and this may affect the 7 layer coating of full cement artwork and of course prolong the drying period of each coating. A 10, 000 – 15,000 Litres ferro cement tank takes 2 full weeks to be completed. The current weather pattern changes may cause another 1 week for completion of the ferro cement tank. This has been factored in the detail implementation plan forecasting on project completion by the second week of December 2015.

Pile community water and sanitation project COMMUNITY TRAINING AND AWARENESS PROGRAM Community Led Total Sanitation was facilitated by ADRA PNG on 15th November 2015 to educate the community on good hygiene practices. The training focused on igniting a change in sanitation behaviour enabling the community to analyse their sanitation condition and to collectively internalize the terrible impact of open defecation on public health and on the entire neighbourhood environment. Since water and sanitation are components that complement each other, this training was conducted to help educate the community to practice good hygiene behaviours and to avoid open defecations which may cause contamination to the water sources and the water point areas. The community had divided the man power into 2 groups and delegated each group the responsibility for each water scheme. The community participated in carrying of the gravel and sand. The construction process commenced by construction of the intake structures, construction of the sedimentation tank and currently is progressing on the establishment of the reservoirs ferro cement tank. The concrete base for the ferro cement has been constructed. Currently the both groups are setting up the framework for the ferro cement tank to commence on the first coating. Pile community water and sanitation project CONCLUSION Generally in spite of the challenges with weather, the project is progressing well. Apart from the community, the ADRA WASH team is been supported by the Seventh Day Adventist Youth who had also voluntarily given their time to provide free labour in the construction of the water supply scheme. The churches have also indicated to provide their support towards the project. We therefore look forward to completing the project with the support of the community and the churches.
