Pembroke Kings Club History Pembroke Old Scholars joined the league in 1932 under the guise of Kings Old Collegians. The club represented the old scholars of Kings College located on the Parade, which continues to be the proud location of the clubs home ground, Haslam Oval. The green and gold colours have adorned the SAAFL ever since apart from brief absences in 1933-35 and 1941. The club has spent most of its time in divisions 2 to 5, however in 1949-50 and 1976 the club played in the premier A1 division. In the 1976 season this gave Mark Bamber the opportunity to win the coveted A1 Hone Medal. In 1974, Kings College and Girton Girls School merged to form Pembroke School. This led the club to change its name from Kings Old Collegians to Pembroke Old Scholars in 1978 in order to reflect the name change of the school. From 1990 the nickname “Kings” was adopted to acknowledge the history of the club. Through the years, the Haslam oval surface and facilities have been continually upgraded, with the latest development being the building of new home team change rooms next to the Pavilion Grandstand in 2013. There has only been two seasons since the creation of the club, in which its home matches haven’t been played on Haslam Oval, which came in 1980 and 1996. This was due to the re-surfacing of the oval, so the club played its home matches on ovals located at Thornton High School and Paradise Primary School in 1980 and Park 21 in 1996. Club Legend Peter Adcock holds the SAAFL record for most successive division medals with 4 and the most division medals in an ‘A’ grade team with 5. Another Club legend Mark “Charlie” Prider is the Club games record holder for most games played with 424 games to date. Through the clubs history we have played in 22 grand finals with 11 successful campaigns. Today, the club remains at Haslam Oval, fielding 3 teams. A3, A3 Reserves and C3. Game day presentations are held at the Kent Town Hotel, every Saturday evening during the regular season. The club has and always will be a home for Old Scholars, past players, supporters, family and friends to join alongside the current playing group and support the “Kings” towards further success.
Presidents Report The 2015 season was again an impressive one for the club with the A-Grade and C-Grade both making finals, but unfortunately bowing out in the second week. The A-Grade had an interesting end to the season with a number of crucial injuries seeing them fall from 3rd to 5th place and missing the double chance. With an outstanding after the siren win against Golden Grove away in week one, the boys unfortunately stumbled the following week against St Ignatius to end a third straight finals campaign. Credit and sincere thanks must go to the A grade coach, Will James for his efforts over the past 3 seasons. Will has been a great influence on the A-Grade team over this time and his dedication and love for the club has been clearly evident to all. Will has stepped down as A-Grade coach, but will remain involved in the club in some capacity. The club has appointed Mike O’Leary into the A-Grade coaching role for 2016 with his playing/assistant to be three time Magarey medalist, James Allen. These are two significant signings for The Kings and has the playing group enthused as to what 2016 can bring. The B-Grade had a disappointing year under coach Jack Wightman, with a very young and inexperienced team taking to the field most weeks. The B-Grade finished in 7th spot, a few games out of finals. The C-Grade again made finals after stepping up from C3 to the C2 division. After finishing the home and away season in 3rd position the boys unfortunately and very uncharacteristically lost both of their finals to finish the season. On behalf of the clubs board and the playing group, we would like to thank all the club’s coaching staff; Will James, Mike O’Leary, Jack Wightman and Nick Smerdon for their tireless efforts this year on and off the field. A big thank you must also go to Matt Binns and his staff at the Robin Hood Hotel for giving the club a home for the last half of the 2015 season. The club now looks forward to a healthy and mutually beneficial relationship with The Hood into the future as they have recently signed on as our major sponsor for 2016. Pembroke Kings Membership Monarch $800 The Monarchs membership is a unique opportunity to invest in the success of the Pembroke Old Scholars Football Club as we strive to achieve the ultimate on-field success - a premiership. In past years the support of the Monarch’s has allowed us to retain our senior coaches, a physio, medical team and other vital off field staff. The Club has also purchased new footballs, fitness equipment and invested in more medical treatment for players. 2015 was ultimately a pretty successful year for the Kings. We built on the progress made in 2014, but unfortunately just fell short of a premiership in the A-Grade and C-Grade, after strong performances during the minor rounds. After a solid season in 2015 and some big name recruits in the off season expectations are high for 2016. We are expecting to play in the major rounds this year and we expect to win! The club has appointed Mike O’Leary as the senior coach and in a significant coup for the club James Allen has come on board as a playing assistant coach. The club is also delighted to announce the return of the Monarchs favourite son, James Pinkney, who will be coaching the B-Grade. After a disappointing year the Kings expect James to add a bit of extra toughness to our younger group. Finally in another coup for the club, Nick Smerdon has been retained as the C-Grade coach. We made significant progress on-field in 2015 and we expect those gains will lead to success in 2016.
