CONTENTS PARKINSON’S DISEASE IN BRIEF A chronic, progressive, incurable, complex, disabling neurological condition which currently has no known cure. The four key symptoms are tremor, rigidity, akinesia/ bradykinesia and postural instability, with many secondary symptoms. Over 80,000 Australians have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. 10% of those diagnosed will be under the age of 40. Parkinson’s disease is more prevalent than prostate, ovarian cervical cancer or leukaemia. 1 in 5 people with Parkinson’s disease are of working age (15 – 64). Prevalence is increasing at around 2 – 3% per year.

Retiring Board Members Associate Professor Colleen Canning Stepped down in November 2012 after serving on the Board since November 2011. Colleen is a leading researcher ! ' disease. Colleen remains an active member of our Advisory Committee and contributes articles to Stand by Me.
Disorders Brain Donor program. Simon was instrumental in establishing the Neurological Nurse Educator program in the Shoalhaven. He also carried out the evaluation of the trial. He has a particular interest in education for PWP and Health Professionals. Simon will continue to be engaged with our Advisory Committee and will continue to serve people living with PD.

Stepped down in November 2012 after serving on the Board since November 2009. Paul is a Neurologist. He has experience both in patient care and in medical research. Paul continues to be involved with our Advisory Committee and continues to contribute to Stand by Me.
Stepped down in November 2012 after serving on the Board since September 2008. Bernard has a diagnosis of Parkinson’s. He has extensive experience in property management and sales in the real estate industry. He has been actively involved in the Paddington Chamber of Commerce as Secretary and as Chairman for three years. Bernard assisted in raising awareness of Parkinson’s in the wider community.
We thank Paul for his dedication to the organisation.
Associate Professor Simon Lewis Stepped down in March 2013 after serving on the Board since September 2008. Simon is the Director of the Parkinson’s Disease Research Clinic at the Brain & Mind Research Institute, and heads the NSW Movement

Economic Dependence
The association is dependent on donations and grants for the majority of its revenue to operate its activities. At the date of this report, the executive have no reason to believe the donations and grants will not continue to support the association. (n)

Parkinson’s is a chronic, progressive, neurological disorder. It shows no respect for age or gender with every person living with Parkinson’s having a different experience. Parkinson’s has no predicatable outcome, no known cure and no sure way of knowing what the future will hold. For many it means loss of freedom and a body no longer in their control. For everyone it means a major life change and the knowledge there is no going back. Rudy is one of the 80,000 Australians diagnosed with Parkinson’s. He faces life with grit and determination. For Rudy there is no giving up while there are still more roads to travel. And although some days he feels he is held together with aviation strength tape (just like parts of his bike), this is just part of his wild ride. It is people like Rudy and his journey that inspires Parkinson’s NSW to continue to strive to help all people living with Parkinson’s.
