ARC FLOTILLA 2011

2011 marks the sixth time that the start of the ARC in Las Palmas has been marked by a flotilla sail. The local boats and visiting yachts started from Castries harbour at the exact time that the 225 ARC participants crossed the line in Gran Canaria.

This year was a record in which 60 boats started in light winds to motor and sail north to Rodney Bay Marina to enjoy free berthing and complementary food and drink at the newly refurbished Ocean Club. Music was provided by a local steelpan group and later a DJ and the party went on until well after dark. After a few words of welcome by Mr Adam Foster, Secretary of St Lucia Yacht Club and also General Manager of the IGY Marina, INSIDE FACE OF IGY - KENNY ARC FLOTILLA 2011 - ST LUCIA ARC 2011 - FOLLOW THE FLEET

IGY RBM - FACES

Kenny of Rodney Bay Sails If like me you have ever crossed the channel on your way south to St Lucia, you might, like me have arrived with damage to your canvas. The gusty winds play havoc with sails and biminis. No problem. We are lucky to have a resident sailmaker/canvas worker who can cure your ills. Kenny, of Rodney Bay Sails has worked in the business for 33 years since he started at the age of 15 to learn the trade of sail repair. First with

Stevens Yachts and later under his own banner he has served the needs of resident and visiting yachts alike. He is a happy man with a family of three and really enjoys his work. If you need his help - he will be there for you!

all participants were awarded a certificate of participation, presented by Dr Stephen King, Commodore of the Yacht Club.

ARC 2011 OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY

At midday Sunday November 13, hundreds of ARC participants took part in the Official Opening Ceremony for ARC 2011. Flag bearers from representing Gran Canaria, Spain, Saint Lucia, the European Union and 28 of the main nationalities in the ARC fleet paraded behind the Banda Gran Canaria, with the Banda H Mencey beating a salsa rhythm at the back. The grand parade had a real festival atmosphere as participants young and old waved flags and cheered.    Sr Jesus Ramirez, President of the Port of Las Palmas, Pablo Barbero from the Concejal del Ayuntamiento de Las Palmas (City of Las Palmas) and Sr Melchor Camon, of the Patronato de Turismo de Gran Canaria welcomed the ARC fleet to Las Palmas and Gran Canaria. Sean Compton, chairman of the Saint Lucia ARC Planning Committee then said how much Saint Lucia was looking forward to seeing the boats in a few weeks time. Andrew Bishop, Managing Director of World Cruising Club declared ARC 2011 officially “open” and the country flags were proudly hoisted on flagpoles around the marina as fireworks were launched in celebration.   The fiesta atmosphere continued with ARC participants and local people taking part in Don Pedro’s famous International Dinghy Race. The race across the marina encourages crews, dressed in a variety of fancy dress.

Later in the afternoon, teams of ARC participants and World Cruising Club staff raced the local ‘vela latina’ outside the harbour. These lateen-rigged wooden boats are unique to Las Palmas, and the racing was kindly organised by the Federacion Vela Latina and the Ayuntamiento de Las Palmas. In the first week of ARC activities in Las Palmas, crews have enjoyed daily social events, seminars on cruising topics and the opportunity to plant another 200 trees in the ARC Forest in the mountains above the city.   ARC activities continue this week, with more crew flying in to join their boats. 202 of the 222 confirmed entries are now in the marina, and the remaining boats are expected in the next few days. costumes, to use any tactics they like to outwit their opponents.

ARC CROSSING FOLLOW THE RECORD FLEET The ARC crossing record is 11 days, 5 hours, 32 minutes and 30 seconds, set by Italian maxi yacht Capricorno (Rinaldo Del Bono), in 2006. Trimaran Rayon Vert (FRA) could potentially make the crossing in 9 -11 days, assuming the wind holds, and Med Spirit (RUS) are also keen to set a new record.

All ARC boats are fitted with the latest version of the Yellowbrick YB3 trackers, allowing family and friends to follow the fleet from the comfort of home. As well as position, the online Fleet Viewer displays heading, speed and boat information. Wind direction and speed is also shown.
