Throughout the course of the year, I made mention of issues I thought might be of interest to the Bench and Bar. Now, I am sure I found a topic that is not only of interest to attorneys, but to everyone living or working in Martin County. What will the future hold for our little spot on the Treasure Coast? What will our children or children’s children think about our stewardship? Recently, Governor Rick Scott and Congressman Patrick Murphy told me that the first thing they are asked by residents of Martin County is, “What are you going to do to save our waterways?” Does it matter whether you are Republican, Democrat, Independent, or not registered to vote? The issue of the St. Lucie River and the Indian River Lagoon and what will become of them should be of pressing concern to all. Continued On Next Page . . .

The older generation can talk about what the waterways were like before development and discharges started. We all can talk about how we lost last summer on the water. Our generation needs to make sure that the next generation has an appreciation and understanding of our unique way of life and how important our waterways are to making a better future. In conjunction with Barbara Kibbey and Phillip DeBerard, IV of the Young Lawyers Division, the MCBA sponsored a “Fish for the Future” event at the Florida Oceanographic Society (“FOS”). If you haven’t been there in some time, you need to visit again. See pages 36 and 37 for photo recap of the day.

With the support of Nicole Hibbs and TD Bank, we brought 80 people out for a day of learning and fun. We all learned more about stingrays, sea turtles, fish and other marine life. The FOS’s Executive Director, Mark Perry, leader in the fight to save our waterways, spoke during our BBQ lunch about the environmental impacts of discharges and plans for lessening their devastating consequences. The kids had a fishing tournament and won prizes. It looked as if everyone had a good time. Not only did we have fun, but perhaps we have been able to plant the seed which will let the next generation carry the banner into the future. Sincerely,

2013-14 2013 14 MCBA President REMINDER: The MCBA Does Not Hold Luncheon Meetings in June or July. Enjoy Your Summer & We Look Forward To Seeing You in August! The Executive Board would like to thank Comerica Wealth Management for its continued co-sponsorship and support of our monthly luncheons.
