welcome to North Central College W

elcome to another amazing performance at North Central College! We are thrilled that you are able to join us. And if this is your first time here, welcome! We sent a letter to all of our season subscribers, but we wanted to share it with all of you who are not currently subscribers, too. The 2016-2017 Fine and Performing Arts season will kick-off with a new way of renewing your season subscription. Instead of purchasing tickets in a set genre series, YOU will pick what artists you want to see and create your own season ticket package. It gives YOU the flexibility to mix-andmatch artists. Here’s how it will work.

mix-and-match event venues, pick two events in Pfeiffer Hall, two in Wentz Concert Hall, and two or three of the Madden Theatre cabaret performances! The choice is completely up to you. We want you to enjoy the shows that you want to see and allow all of our patrons to get the largest savings possible. Series subscribers along with our Impresario level Friends of the Arts members will be able to take advantage of this new and improved offer in May before it’s open to the general public. Pick the shows you want to see and start saving money. What could be better than that?

A full-season schedule will become available in May listing each artist and their full price ticket cost based on venue seating. In addition to the full price ticket cost, there will be 3 lower prices listed showing a 10%, 15% and 20% discount. The more shows you buy, the larger the discount. If you purchase three performances for your season ticket package, you will receive 10% off the full price of those tickets. For four performances, the discount goes up to 15% off, and if you purchase five or more performances for the season, you will receive our largest discount, 20% off the full price of your ticket order. We feel this is the best way we can serve your individual preferences.

So, my next step would be to say that with all the money you are saving, consider joining Friends of the Arts, our fine and performing arts support group. There is a complete listing of the benefits of membership here in your program or stop by the box office to find out more. Join this wonderful group of people who truly understand how important the arts are to all of us.

Do you really love dance and country music? Or maybe classical and jazz? Build your season ticket package around our dance, country, rock, jazz, blues, classical, cabaret and world music artists! Don’t know who an artist is? Trust me and take a chance. You may love them. You can

Thank you for being here. We appreciate your business and hope to see you again soon. And now, on with the show!

Join Friends of the Arts today and receive exclusive benefits. Thanks to our many contributors, world-renowned artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Boys Choir, Wynton Marsalis, Celtic Woman and many more have performed in our venues. But the cost of performance tickets only covers half our expenses to bring these great artists to the College’s stages. The generous support from the Friends of the Arts ensures the College can continue to bring world-class performers to our world-class venues. Sneak preview of next year’s season

“I Am Ireland” March 19, 8 p.m. Wentz Concert Hall 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville

“I AM IRELAND”

“I Am Ireland” Directed by Andrea Dymond Music Direction by Sean Gavin ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE The piece is produced by Wexfordhouse, a company formed in 2013 by Emmy-nominated producer and singer Michael Londra. Current projects for Londra include producing several theatrical projects, including “Celtic Illusion,” a magic and dance show in Australia and Asia and “Eclipse,” a new Cirque-style show and his own touring and recording projects. PERFORMER BIOGRAPHY Celebrating 100 years of Irish independence! Informative, educational as well as entertaining! Celebrated Chicago-based Irish tenor Paddy Homan is featured in a theatrically staged, one-man show to remember the upcoming 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising in Ireland. “I Am Ireland” will take audiences on a journey through the songs, speeches and images, honoring and celebrating the Irish road to freedom. Produced by Emmy-nominated producer and singer Michael Londra, “I Am Ireland” is a personal conversation about some of the songs, speeches and stories which inspired all those who came before 1916 to continue on that great journey to reclaim Ireland’s independence. Presented in two acts with images projected to bring to life the faces of the great statesmen and pictures of the time, Homan performs with a three- piece band of the finest Irish traditional musicians in North America. They bring the songs to life. They weave through the words of statesmen and they celebrate the glory of Irish music, the glory of Ireland. Homan, the renowned Chicago singer has a strong history with the songs. “As I reflect on the many compelling reasons on why we created the “I Am Ireland” project, I am reminded of the many years I spent growing up in Cork city and pondering an inner calling to do something for my country. Indeed, coming from an Irish nationalist family with a working class background on the northside of Cork city, I heard many great songs as a child, which captivated me, songs like ‘Grace’ and “Four Green Fields” being the early ones. Being taught by the Irish Christian Brothers imprinted in me a great love for Ireland, its language, its customs and its people and the rebel county, of course!” Paddy continues, “That inner calling was to nag me for many years and I must say that I spent many a night in Cork city, whether on the side of river Lee fishing and thinking about these songs, or other times, perhaps ‘supping over a pint’ and toiling at what would be my purpose; politics or a life of service for others? In the end I chose a life of service. This was my road less traveled and it has been the guiding light of my life.”

“I AM IRELAND” (continued) PERFORMER BIOGRAPHY (CONTINUED) “Singing these great rebel songs from a young age and indeed throughout my life to date has calmed that inner calling. The more I sang these songs, the more they came alive and spoke to me. I suppose it satisfied whatever republican call I might have had, or the family I grew up within.” The performance looks at the journey from 1798 to 1916 from a subjective/narrative perspective. The 1798 period was an era when both Catholics and Protestants came together as one unified force, and some of the songs at that time symbolize this sense of unity and hope. Sean O’ Riada, who can be compared to the Gershwin of Irish music, says, “We are only the messengers of the music and the songs. In singing these songs, we make the spirit of that person, who in writing the song or story, come alive. So it’s not about the person singing it but the immortal story within this song. And so I think that all those years ago, as people fought, died and starved, one abiding mode of survival were songs and stories. It was the people’s connection to their past, passed down from generation to generation, or to put it another way it was their mode of Social Media.” “As they spoke the song, they may not have had food but were nourished with that unrelenting quest to keep that struggle for freedom alive which the great leaders started.” Sean Gavin Sean Gavins playing on the flute, whistle and uilleann pipes reflect his lifelong love for traditional Irish music. Growing up in Detroit, he was first encouraged by his father, County Clare-born fiddle player, Mick Gavin. Gavin played a variety of instruments before settling on the flute at age 11 with the help of Scariff flute-player Leo MacNamara. Not long after, he began work on the uilleann pipes with teacher Al Purcell—himself a student of famed piper Leo Rowsome. Currently residing in Chicago, he has been fortunate to spend time with Sligo flute legend Kevin Henry. Gavin is a member of the critically acclaimed groups Bua and NicGaviskey and enjoys teaching and performing around Chicago. He also performs often with the Irish band Téada and serves as musical director of the new sean-nós dance performance ensemble, Atlantic Steps.

North Central College Art Department

“LINES”

Faculty Exhibition

Based in Chicago, German artist and North Central College alumna (class of 1968) Monika Wulfers explores our perception of lines through striking, minimal sculptures and paintings. Placement, scale and other mathematical concepts relating to objects in space are an important part of her work. Each “light line” is of equal length, but as you walk around the length and angle of the lines change. Therefore, how we see the art can vary based on our height and distance, giving each viewer a unique experience.

The Art Department of North Central College has many success stories. These accomplishments span many decades from Diane Duvigneaud to the current professors. This exhibit reflects the continuity and professional expectations, which are apparent throughout the history of the Art Department. This exhibition highlights the commitment of North Central College to the fine arts and our alumni.
