Title Page

OPERA’S RISING STARS The Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (MONCA) is a program designed to discover promising young opera singers and assist in the development of their careers. The opera’s version of American Idol or The Voice seeks to uncover and nurture great talent. As the operatic voice continues to develop throughout an artist’s twenties and thirties, programs like MONCA and the Resident Artist Company of Indianapolis Opera exist to nurture the professional development of young talent. Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and Indianapolis Opera are pleased to present past winners of MONCA in concert with Opera’s Rising Stars. The program for Opera’s Rising Stars is listed below followed by a song-by-song description. Carl Maria von Weber Overture to Oberon Gioacchino Rossini Cruda sorte! from L’italiana in Algeri Margaret Mezzacappa, mezzo-soprano Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Hai già vinta la causa from The Marriage of Figaro Reginald Smith Jr., baritone

Program Notes

Overture to Oberon Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) A prelude to the opera’s story, Overture to Oberon introduces the main characters, scenes of love and fighting, and the element of magic. Sir Huon and his squire embark on an adventure to claim the hand of a beautiful princess. Listen for the call of a horn sounded by Huon when in need of magical aid from the Elf-King Oberon. When the knight and his princess are separated and the couple is in danger, Oberon reappears to bring the two together safe again. Knowing that the music follows these adventures, what do you hear? To read more about the opera’s musical story, visit: http://goo.gl/x9PHfJ Cruda sorte! from L’italiana in Algeri Gioacchio Rossini (1792-1868) “Cruda sorte! Amor tiranno!” (Cruel fate! Tyrannical Cupid!) What’s a girl to do? When Isabella, a young woman on a quest to find her true love is captured by pirates, she must “keep calm and carry on.” In this aria she reminds herself she will prevail over her captors by using her cleverness and sharp wit, for “all men are alike.” To read more about how Rossini and Beethoven both took a dramatic formula and turned the tables on the “rescue opera”, visit: http://goo.gl/UfAABZ Hai giá vinta la causa from The Marriage of Figaro Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Social grumbles, class conflicts and comedy are some of the words used to describe The Marriage of Figaro. Throughout the opera, Figaro orchestrates several “stunts” to out maneuver his aristocratic counterparts. In this aria, an enraged Count Almaviva responds to a boastful conversation overheard between Figaro and his fiancée Susanna who plot to outwit the count. Listen how the orchestra adds to the count’s anger with emphasized dotted rhythms and tremolos in the accompanied recitative, Hai gia vinta la causa!, and the intensity of rapid-scale lines and trills in the “vengeance

aria” to follow, Vedro mentr’io sospiro. Read more about the Figaro character as he appears in three plays by French playwright Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais and the operas that follow in this article by Paul Zweifel, The Three Progenitors of Figaro: http://goo.gl/DCiemS O süsser mond from The Merry Wives of Windsor Otto Nicolai (1810-1849) Based on the Shakespearean play, this German opera is a singspiel meaning it contains spoken dialogue with musical numbers. The comedy follows the buffoonish character, Falstaff, as he attempts to woo simultaneously two different married women who then conspire to make him into a bigger fool. In the penultimate scene, we see the curtain rise to reveal a masked ball in the garden. While admiring the loveliness of the evening, the party guests sing O süsser mond, “O Silver Moon.” When Falstaff is led into the scene, he first believes the masked guests to be elves, ghosts and insects. The sound of this chorus magically captures the beauty and mystery of the night. Je veux vivre (Juliet’s Waltz) from Roméo et Juliette Charles Gounod (1818-1893) Juliette wants nothing more than to be free and embrace the world. Intoxicated by her youth, she burns with excitement and life inthis aria --- Ah! Douce flamme! Reste dans mon âme comme un doux trésor longtemps encore. Perhaps the sweet flame within her soul burns too quick, for in the opera we see Juliette grow from a child into a young woman overnight as her crosses paths with her one true love. Che gelida manina from La bohème Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) “Would you light my candle?” The poet Rodolfo lives la vie bohème in Paris when a young woman knocks at his door on a cold light looking for a match to light her candle. When the candle extinguishes, Rodolfo’s candle also goes out leaving the couple in a dark, cold room together. The young poet grabs her hand and sings Che gelinda manina (“what a cold little hand”). Love is in the air as he learns her name, Mimi. To learn about the Bohemian Paris of 1830 or the opera, visit: http://goo.gl/XR82Gr O nuit divine (Balcony Scene) from Roméo et Juliette Charles Gounod (1818-1893) In the night Roméo stands outside Juliette’s balcony looking for his beloved. Accompanying the star-crossed lovers is the orchestra. Listen for beautiful, long melodic lines and the harp conveying pure love. Harmonies descend chromatically as

the couple exchange dialogue under the stars. Listen for Gounod’s orchestration and use of holds and ritenuto as the musical conventions paint this passionate scene of give-and-take in the lover’s synchronicity. The scene ends with a pledge to marry the next day. “Anvil Chorus” from Il trovatore Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901) The single “glowing” moment in a dark story of death and deceit, Act II, Scene 1 or Anvil Chorus, literally melts the clouds away to reveal the dawn shining on a chorus of Spanish gypsies singing of hard work, good wine and gypsy women. “Lift up your hammers!” Caro nome from Rigoletto Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901) Sung by Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda, you can hear her heart flutter in light coloratura flourishes with orchestral trills. Enamored by a young man she met at church, she sings, “My desire will fly to you on the wings of thought and my last breath will be yours, my beloved.” For a closer look at the character and the aria, visit: http://goo.gl/W5P40d Pourquoi me réveiller from Werther Jules Massenet (1842-1912) Werther loosely follows Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s epistolary novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther. In this aria, the lovesick, young poet Werther arrives at the home of his love Charlotte who has married another. He picks up a book of Ossian poetry that they once shared and begins to read, “Pourquoi me réveiller.” He looks at the anxious Charlotte, they embrace and she runs from the room knowing they may never be together. For information on Goethe's Legacy in Art and Opera, visit: http://goo.gl/211HR4 “Waltz” from Eugene Onegin Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) At the beginning of Eugene Onegin’s Act II, the curtain rises to reveal a party celebrating Tatiana’s birthday. With joyous dancing and merriment abound, the guests tout how lovely and excited they are to partake in such an affair. “Bravo, bravo, bravo, bravo, a splendid surprise for us all!” The opera is based on a novel in verse written by Alexander Pushkin. excerpt from the novel describing the lovely Tatiana, visit: http://goo.gl/3hIzji (Stanzas 4-6). Il core vi dono from Così fan tutte Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Do you love me? Do you not? Cosi fan tutte is the story of two couples, a mischievous maid and a wager. Engaged to Dorabella and Fiordiligi, soldiers Ferrando and Guglielemo enter in a wager with Don Alfonso who claims there is no such thing as a faithful woman. Accepting the challenge, the soldiers fake a “call to duty” only to return, in disguise as two mustached Albanians. They each attempt to woo the other’s fiancée to prove their loyalty. “Il core vi dono” is a duet involving Dorabella and the disguised Guglielemo where he successfully woos the young maiden, exchanging a heart-shaped necklace for a medallion with her fiancé’s picture enclosed. For an article on the opera, visit “Romantic Recrimination: Mozart’s Così fan tutte” at: http://goo.gl/ZySKuM Stride la vampa from Il trovatore Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901) On the slopes of a mountain in Biscay the sun is rising. Gypsies sing of hard work, good wine and gypsy women in the famous Anvil Chorus, and immediately following, Azucena, an old gypsy woman, sings the vengeance aria, “Strida la vampa,” vowing to avenge her mother’s death who was burned at the stake at the hands of the Count. To make matters worse, as her mother burned at the stake, Azucena in her rage accidently throws her own child into the fire. Vengeance seems to be a recurring theme in opera from The Queen of the Night in Magic Flute to Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro and Azucena’s “Stride la vampa” in Il trovatore. For a playlist of opera’s bad mothers, visit: http://goo.gl/mh2MzP “Toreador Song” from Carmen Georges Bizet (1838-1875) The bullfighter Escamillo enters the opera in Act II with "Votre toast, je peux vous le rendre", otherwise known as the “Toreador Song.” Adored by the crowd, Escamillo’s arrival is announced with "Vivat, vivat le Toréro.” He notices Carmen and she brushes his affection aside.
