The Hollywood Concert Orchestra was founded in 1999 by John R. Giattino and Judith M. Giattino. Both John and Judith have been promoting concerts since that time, and have produced tours for the Hollywood Concert Orchestra across the United States as well as the People’s Republic of China, Japan, Taiwan and Korea. The Hollywood Concert Orchestra has toured recently with the famous movie star Ms. Shirley Jones, who received an Oscar for her performance in the movie Elmer Gantry, which also starred Burt Lancaster. Ms. Jones also starred in a very successful television series, The Partridge Family, which won several Emmy Awards. Throughout his many years as a producer, John Giattino has been associated with such great artists as Mantovani, Percy Faith, Henry Mancini, Arthur Fiedler and many other ‘greats’ in the pop orchestra genre. For many years, Mr. Giattino was a general musical contractor for Columbia Artists. He also See Something Spectacular

provided touring orchestras for such artists as Rosemary Clooney, Boots Randolph, Chet Atkins, Floyd Cramer, Robert Goulet, Mitzi Gaynor, Carol Lawrence, and Frank Gorshin. John and Judith also produced a tour titled, A Tribute to Mario Lanza, featuring former Metropolitan Opera tenor Mr. Thomas Booth. The Hollywood Concert Orchestra is best known for its special musical arrangements of both current and classic movie themes. In various programs the orchestra performed music dating back to the early ‘30s, as well as the most current hits from such movies as “The Lion King” and “Mission Impossible”. As a touring orchestra, The Hollywood Concert Orchestra sets up goals to explore various artistic horizons not only in the United States but abroad, as well. During the last decade the Orchestra has performed at numerous festivals and concert halls across the United States. The Orchestra’s management also dedicates a great deal of attention to book

the Orchestra to perform in other countries. Its 17-concert debut tour of Taiwan in 2000 was a sell-out experience for local organizers, which was followed by the Orchestra’s re-engagements to Taiwan several times after. The Orchestra’s program titled “A Night at the Oscars” was heard in Portugal and Spain during the spring of 2004. Based on the success of numerous American tours, the Orchestra has represented the Hollywood theme in the Far East, as well. Their performances were extremely well received in Japan, Taiwan, and Mainland China. The Hollywood Concert Orchestra’s American tour during the 2015-16 season will be a highlight of the Orchestra’s touring schedule upon their return from the Far East. Their program “A Night at the Oscars” will take you on a musical journey of what Hollywood has given us since 1927.

Just as a plant craves light, Celtic people are drawn to music and song. Scattered around the world like seeds on the wind, they are propelled by the powerful rhythms and motifs of a mysterious and exuberant ancient culture. Music is the soul, the very lifeblood of their tradition. It binds them together, even as it sets them apart. This driving passion for music and dance is the keystone of Celitc identity. Their response to melody, lyric, and the criss-crossing rhythms of Irish dance is reflexive, intuitive, and filled with joy. The Irish embrace their musical culture like no other nation. And their pride in artistry is its own reward. Above all else, it is this natural affinity with music and song that has given Celtic people a truly global voice. A Celtic Voice. Every thundering dance tune and plaintive melody is a separate thread in the broad and colourful tapestry of Celtic music. Spirit of Freedom tells the story of Irish independence, beginning 100 years ago with the Easter Rising. Akin to America’s 4th of July, the Easter Rising of 1916 created the Ireland we know and love today. Through music, song, dance, and storytelling, Celtic Nights honors the struggle of a people fighting to gain freedom, independence, and true democracy.

RE ENTRY

Notes from the Director

A Wharton Center Theatre Production Directed by BERT GOLDSTEIN

WHAT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO OUR WARRIORS? I think this is the ultimate question posed by ReEntry. The play tonight looks closely at the human toll beyond the battlefield. We see the warrior and his or her family at home where, in many cases, the war continues, but on a very different front. Invasions and air strikes are meticulously planned, but does our plan for war really consider what the re-entry process will entail? This struggle is deeply personalized by the characters in the play as they confront their post-war demons and attempt to move on. Are we doing enough for our vets, whether their wounds are physical, psychological or both?

Playwrights Emily Ackerman and KJ Sanchez did a remarkable job compiling interviews with veterans and their families, giving us tremendous insight into their battles at home as well as the battles within themselves. The portraits created are brutally honest, but within them, we witness compassion, humor, love and hope.

Not having any military background myself, this play has been an eye-opening and insightful journey that has led me to view veterans (and Marines in particular) in a different light. Like many of you, I am asking the question: Are we fulfilling our responsibility to them for what we’ve asked them to sacrifice? Bert Goldstein Director, ReEntry
